Roots (2011) - Johnny Winter

Yeah, Johnny Winter's first new studio album in over seven years is called Roots, and it features Winter with a bevy of guests like Sonny Landreth, Jimmy Vivino, Warren Haynes, Frank Latorre, John Popper, Vince Gill, Susan Tedeschi, brother Edgar Winter, Derek Trucks, Paul Nelson, John Medeski, and more covering 11 classic blues numbers originally tracked by blues greats like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, and others, but this isn’t one of those “let’s help out the old guitar player explore his roots” kind of blues album. Technically it is, perhaps, but this is every square inch Winter's album. He sings here as well as he ever has and his guitar playing is powerful and brilliant, like it always is, and he’s diving into songs and material that he’s always emulated -- the end result is a coherently shaped, explosive, vibrant, and joyous set of Winter at his best doing what he loves the best. Roots explodes immediately with a funky and appropriately shuffling take on T-Bone Walker's “T-Bone Shuffle” and the album doesn’t really let up from there, gearing through Jimmy Reed's “Bright Lights, Big City” (a duet with Susan Tedeschi), Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's "Honky Tonk," a delightful swamp instrumental that features Winter's younger brother Edgar, and a joyous take on Elmore James' “Dust My Broom,” which roars and soars like it’s supposed to, with Winter and guest Derek Trucks making sure that it does. Roots is easily one of the best blues albums of the year, and with the raw yet elegant grace that Winter brings to these songs, it’s also one of the finest albums of his long career.

…jazz stopped evolving when Davis wasn’t there to push it forward. Davis was the son of a dental surgeon, Dr. Miles Dewey Davis, Jr., and a music teacher, Cleota Mae (Henry) Davis, and thus grew up in the black middle class of east St. Louis after the family moved there shortly after his birth. He became interested in music during his childhood and by the age of 12 began taking trumpet lessons. While still in high school, he started to get jobs playing in local bars and at 16 was playing gigs out of town on weekends. At 17, he joined Eddie Randle’s Blue Devils, a territory band based in St. Louis. He enjoyed a personal apotheosis in 1944, just after graduating from high school, when he saw and was allowed to sit in with Billy Eckstine’s big band, who was playing in St. Louis. The band featured trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and saxophonist Charlie Parker, the architects of the emerging bebop style of jazz, which was characterized by fast, inventive soloing and dynamic rhythm variations. It is striking that Davis fell so completely under Gillespie and Parker’s spell, since his own slower and less flashy style never really compared to theirs. But bebop was the new sound of the day, and the young trumpeter was bound to follow it. He did so by leaving the Midwest to attend the Institute of Musical Art in New York City (renamed Juilliard) in September 1944. Shortly after his arrival in Manhattan, he was playing in clubs with Parker, and by 1945 he had abandoned his academic studies for a full-time career as a jazz musician, initially joining Benny Carter’s band and making his first recordings as a sideman. He played with Eckstine in 1946-1947 and was a member of Parker’s group in 1947-1948, making his recording debut as a leader on a 1947 session that featured Parker, pianist John Lewis, bassist Nelson Boyd, and drummer Max Roach. This was an isolated date, however, and Davis spent most of his time playing and recording behind Parker.

All digitally remastered of cult rock hero Brian Auger, complete singles, B-sides & rare tracks from 1965-69, with and without his group The Trinity and Julie Driscoll.
The 21 tracks on this compilation of odds and ends from the ’60s don’t show up on Auger’s regular 1960s albums (either with or without Julie Driscoll). As the title infers, Auger’s early recordings were in a more straight-ahead R&B-rock vein than the jazzier and experimental ones he branched into on his albums, although you can certainly hear a good deal of Jimmy Smith-style playing on these cuts. The disc starts off with half a dozen 1967-1968 items that are most likely from non-LP singles credited to Driscoll, Auger, and the Trinity (the liner notes are resolutely unhelpful…

… in this respect), with Driscoll singing on all but one. These are probably the most interesting, progressive elements on the compilation, including covers of Bob Dylan’s “This Wheel’s on Fire” and “I Am a Lonesome Hobo,” David Ackles’ “Road to Cairo,” and a strong moody original by bassist David Ambrose, “As She Knows” (on which Auger takes vocals). The next five tracks have the most mysterious origins of any of the music on the album, being cut sometime between June 1965 and April 1967, and sounding like good demo showcases for Auger’s forceful soul-jazz organ (particularly on the covers of “Green Onions” and Jimmy McGriff’s “Kiko”). When he sings in addition, the results are less impressive. Wrapping matters up are the nine tracks recorded in the mid-’60s by the Steampacket (with Driscoll, Long John Baldry, and Rod Stewart sharing vocals). Competent, but not remarkable, blue-eyed British soul, the Steampacket material has been floating around on various reissue packages for decades. Devoted Augerites will thus most likely be interested in the other songs, which tie up some of the most pop-oriented outings of his career and are generally pretty fair, though not outstanding.

Together with its successor,"Crises" from 1983, "Five Miles out" represents the typical format of Mike's albums in the 80's: long track, here "Taurus 2", and an assortment of shorter musical pieces. (Mike has started this concept with "Platinum" and has kept it for almost twelve years.) Being a strongly conceptual album, "Five Miles out" was inspired with Mike's adventure, soon after he had gained his piloting licence in 1979, when a plane, piloted by him, was caught in a heavy storm. Needles to say, this album wouldn't gain its high reputation (it was his most selling album after the debut "Tubular Bells") without act of Mike's new discovery which he found in Maggie Reilly, female singer.

Roy Buchanan has long been considered one of the finest, yet criminally overlooked guitarists of the blues rock genre whose lyrical leads and use of harmonics would later influence such guitar greats as Jeff Beck, his one-time student Robbie Robertson, and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons.
The Rolling Stones wanted him to replace Brian Jones, and Eric Clapton asked him to play the guitar for Derek & The Dominos – but he turned down both offers. He moved to Los Angeles when he was a teenager and played in the band Heartbeats with Spencer Dryden (who later became the drummer of Jefferson Airplane). After this, he went on tour with Dale Hawkins and played with Robbie Robertson (The Band) who described Buchanan as one of his main influences.

Live at Rockpalast captures a live performance recorded for the German rock series Rockpalast on February 24, 1985 in Hamburg. Joan Baez’s first album was released in 1960 and it was a revelation. Here was an angelic-looking, dark-haired 19-year-old singing ancient songs, most of them drawn from the Child Ballads, a set of 305 numbered ballads from England and Scotland (and several American variants) collected by Francis James Child in the late 19th century, with a soprano voice so pure and mesmerizing that it appeared as timeless as a voice in an elegant and graceful dream. She made ancient love and murder ballads seem like cool and serious business, and without Baez as a virginal-looking poster girl, the commercial end of the urban folk revival of the early ’60s might never have gotten off the ground. …of that first album and adds in Folksingers ‘Round Harvard Square, Baez’s first actual record, which features her singing solo on six songs, as part of a duo with Bill Wood on four songs, and as part of a trio with Wood and Ted Alevizos on another song. The bonus set originally appeared on LP in 1959 from the little Veritas Records label and was intended as an introduction to the Cambridge, Massachusetts folk scene that was just beginning to flourish at the time. Paired like this, one realizes that Baez just didn’t suddenly appear from the heavens after all when her official album came out a year later, but that her approach and stage presence had been artfully formed and nurtured in the Cambridge folk clubs.

Released in 1969, Keep on Moving was the fifth Elektra release by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. During a four-year span the group's namesake and leader was the only original member left from their first album in 1965. Morphing in a similar direction as Michael Bloomfield's Electric Flag, this edition of the Butterfield Blues Band prominently fronted the horn section of David Sanborn on alto sax, Gene Dinwiddie on tenor, and Keith Johnson on trumpet. The band's direction was full tilt, horn-dominated soul music, first explored on The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw, which took them farther away from the highly regarded gritty blues experimentation of East-West and the duel guitar attack of Michael Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop. This album also signaled the final appearance of AACM and Art Ensemble of Chicago drummer Phillip Wilson, whose Butterfield swan song was the collaboration with Dinwiddie on the hippie gospel track "Love March," of which an appropriately disjointed live version appeared on the Woodstock soundtrack album. The difference between Butterfield's 1965 street survival ode "Born in Chicago" ("My father told me 'son you'd better get a gun") and "Love March" ("Sing a glad song, sing all the time") left fans wondering if the band had become a bit too democratic. However, on cuts like "Losing Hand," some of the band's original fervor remains. Butterfield's harp intertwining with the horn section sounds like a lost Junior Parker outtake and the Jimmy Rogers' penned "Walking by Myself," is the closest this band comes to the gutsy Windy City blues of its heyday. The remaining tracks aren't horrible, but tend to run out of ideas quickly, unfortunately making what may have been decent material (with a little more effort) sound premature. Butterfield would make a few more personnel changes, release one final disc on Elektra, Sometimes I Just Feel Like Smilin', and then dump the band altogether to embark on a solo career. In 2006, Sundazed released a High-Definition Vinyl LP version of Keep on Moving.
