Public Enemy performs this weekend at Rites of Spring in Nashville

The Detroit Movement Electronic Music Festival (DEMF) has posted a 2012 lineup. Public Enemy has top billing along with Lil’ Louis, the man credited with organizing the world’s first rave back in 1977.

DEMF takes place Memorial Day Weekend in Hart Plaza. Tickets are $75 for the three day show and there’s a payment plan available.

The folks behind the Lake Tahoe SnowGlobe and the Vail Valley SnowBall have added another ski area based music festival for this spring. SnowMont will take place at Killington, Vermont from March 30-April 3, 2012.

Kaskade, The Flaming Lips, Snoop Dogg, Chromeo, Slightly Stoopid, Lotus, Datsik, DJ Shadow, Ott, Gramatik, and Big Boi are amongst the talent.

1. Boonstock

The pride of Alberta returns for another rollicking midsummer weekend. The traditionally rock heavy show also boasts some of the best camping of the Canadian festivals with a late night dance tent and plenty of entertainment. It also takes over Canada Day, which may make little sense to us Yankees, but we’re guessing it has something to do with partying.

2. Osheaga
Where: Montreal, Quebec
When: August 3-5, 2012

It was only after the three hour battle to the state that Todd realized he needed a bathroom.

Osheaga may be smack dab in the middle of Montreal, but doesn’t feel like a downtown festival due to the tranquil Île Sainte-Hélène. Of course, you’re sharing that peaceful location with 30,000 screaming manics. The island festival has featured big names in recent years like Arcade Fire, The Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, Coldplay, Snoop Dogg, and The National. Scan the local paper for late night after party scenes throughout the city.

3. Calgary Stampede
Where: Calgary, Alberta
When: July 6-15, 2012

100 years of the Calgary Stampede.

It’s a music festival. It’s a rodeo. It’s a state fair. It’s been happening for over 100 years (not a typo, that’s two zeros). Over the course of a whopping eleven days, this monster of entertainment will trample you with fun at the centennial celebration. Or you may actually get trampled by a horse — stay away from that rodeo fence.

With the success of the comedy tent last year, the 2012 edition will be larger and feature more of the funny. The bizzare Art Car Boot Fair returns. There will also be a cabaret stage, kids area, and wait for it…magic! It looks like a very busy and very entertaining festival.

The All Good Music Festival & Campout has made their first 2012 lineup announcement for the July 19-22 show. The requisite legendary headliners are The Allman Brothers and Phil Lesh. The most intriguing so far: Bob Weir playing with Bruce Hornsby and Branford Marsalis.

The rest of the playing field: The Flaming Lips, Michael Franti & Spearhead, G. Love & Special Sauce, Galactic, Shopongle, Mickey Hart Band, Trampled by Turles, SOJA, Railroad Earth, Papadosio, The Werks, Wood Brothers, Lettuce, The Lumineers, Everyone Orchestra, The Rex Jam. There’s still 20 more artists to be announced. Stay tuned in our MFJ All Good Festival Guide to see the most current lineup.

Tickets go on sale Friday, February 24 at noon for $159. That includes all four days with camping. All Good will be taking place in Thornville, Ohio this year.

Eighties legends, New Order, have announced spring festival dates.

A flurry of lineup news from the European Festival Circuit:

Bestival has confirmed that New Order will be the Saturday headliners. New acts include: Friendly Fires, Death In Vegas, Django Django, Daughter, Drums Of Death, Zulu Winter, Brainfeeder Presents Thundercat, The Gaslamp Killer, Teebs, Lapalux, Jeremiah Jae & Dj Kutmah, Doctor P, Pearson Sound, Borgore, Flux Pavilion, Max Cooper, Gemini, Pangaea, Pariah, Billy Daniel Bunter, Trolley Snatcha, Blawan, KOAN Sound, Warm & Electric MindsMinds.

Spain’s Festival Internacional de Benicassim (FIB) will also see New Order headlining. New adds for this week: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Dizzee Rascal, David Guetta, Bombay Bicycle club, Cooper, Crystal Castles, Example, The Horrors, Joe Crepusculo, Katy B, Kurt Vile & the Violators, Miles Kane.

In other Spanish news, the Bilboa BBK Festival added The Kooks, Glasvegas, and Warpaint to an already full show that features Radiohead, the Cure, Snow Patrol, Vetusta Morla, The Gift, Noah and the Whale, Band of Skulls, Lori Meyers, Corizonas, The Inspector Cluzo & FB’s Horns, Tribes, and Zoe. The Klaxons, a previous confirmation, has been cancelled.

Let’s stick with Spain. The indie rock Sonar Barcelona has been releasing names slowly, but surely. The current lineup includes heavy hitters like The Roots, Hot Chip, James Blake, Fatboy Slip, Riche Hawtin, Squarepusher, Friendly Fires, Deadmau5, and Metronomy. See the current lineup here.

The 16th annual Suwannee Springfest is ready to jam out this March 22-25 along with a slew of tasty artists. Hot Buttered Rum, Tea Leaf Green, Sloppy Joe, and Habanero Honeys are on the bill along with perennial favorites and headliner Yonder Mountain String Band. It’s a very full four days. A little info if you’ve never been to Suwannee: the artists represent a wide genre of American Roots music including bluegrass, acoustic blues, Zydeco, roots rock, and singer/songwriters. The Amerciana heavy festival even inspired a 2007 doucmentary called “Music Farmers: Sowing the Seeds of Americana.”

Besides the music, the other huge perk of this festival is the camping in Live Oak, Florida. The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park offers plenty of distractions like hiking, disc golf, and swimming. Camping areas range from family-friendly to rowdy and from primitive to swanky electric/water upgrades.

Tickets right now are running at $150 (taxes and fees included) for all four days which includes camping. That price will increase to $180 if you wait to purchase a ticket. There’s also a weekend option for $115 which is good for Saturday/Sunday.

March is nearly upon us, and once again our thoughts turn to that American institution known as Spring Break when college kids take a well deserved break from their pursuits of higher education to partake in other cultural amusements like binge drinking and bikini contests. Here are a few humble music festival suggestions for the 2012 season.

Best Spring Break Spot Period.
There’s no question that the wildest festival in this list is Ultra. Mami is one of the Spring Break universe hot spots. Hot bodies. Hot music. Hot weather. Were you looking for something else? Plus, Key West is a short drive away to lick your wounds after the blowout.

Best Spring Break With Your Coat On.
For those of you that can’t stand lazing away on the beaches, it’s time to head to the hills. Bring your skis and snowboards for a week in the Colorado Rockies and make your base in the Vail Valley. The ultimate apres-ski takes place over three days and with plenty of late night parties, you’ll be hard pressed for those early morning powder days.

Best Spring Break Trip for Stoners.
As if you ever need a reason to go to Amsterdam for Spring Break, all you jam-heads can use the excuse that you’re going to “listen to music” at the Jam in the Dam Festival. The super-chill venue provides a more intimate music experience and also has a restaurant, café, cinema, and art gallery in the building. Did you catch that it’s in Amsterdam?

Best Spring Break Festival Abroad.
The Festival Imperial in Costa Rica is the best bet for a late March Spring Break trip. Hell, it’s even worth it if you have to skip a few days of school. Bjork, LMFAO, The Flaming Lips, Thievery Corporation, Cypress Hill, Moby, Skrillex, TV on the Radio and more will play over two days in sunny Costa Rica. Just make sure you remember to get back on the return flight.

Best Spring Break for Hipsters. 
You could try to get into the crowded South by Southwest Festival, but we’re putting on our money on the inaugural Treefort Festival in Boise, Idaho. You’ll get a good chunk of the bands that performed at SXSW and get brag to your friends that Austin is “way too mainstream.”

Best Spring Break Celebration of St. Patrick’s Day
Grab a glowstick and head to Los Angeles for the the trippy Beyond Wonderland Festival. It’s like Halloween, Spring Break, and St. Patrick’s Day all rolled up into an enormous electronic dance music party.

With a rumored attendance of 100,000 EDM fans, the Ultra Music Festival in Miami last year absolutely killed it last year. Seems like they’re taking that success and rolling with it with the announcement of six festivals this year (including Miami) taking place over four continents.

The first festival, Miami, will take place in its typical time slot — March 23-24, 2012. Then it’s off to Buenos Aires in Argentina, a summer show in Poland, and across the world to Japan. Then back to South America and Brazil. The undisputed electronic dance music mecca of Ibiza, Spain will play host to an early summer and close of summer festival as well.

Various Ponderosa Stomp buttons

The New Orleans based Ponderosa Stomp announced that there will be no show in 2012. That’s too bad because this festival has one of the most unique lineups of the year. The mission of the Ponderosa Stomp Foundation is to pay tribute to the unsung heroes of American rock-n-roll, rhythm & blues and roots music  – while those musicians are still alive, and the annual festival is a yearly extension of this goal. According to the email we received:

…The Ponderosa Stomp Foundation has decided to dedicate our focus in 2012 to our educational and preservationist programs and activities. In the coming year, we will concentrate on building an online archive of the important videos and audio recordings we have collected, along with other projects that further our goals in these fields.

…To prioritize the development these new programs, we will be moving the next Ponderosa Stomp Festival to fall of 2013. The extra year in between festivals will allow us the time and resources to focus on the Foundation’s other activities.

Slash will be chilling at Rocklahoma 2012

Organizers of one of the largest hard rock/metal fests of the summer have posted a lineup for the May 25-27 show. Rob Zombie, Chickenfoot, Creed, Megadeth, Slash, Queensryche, Chevelle, Jackyl, Theory of a Deadman, Puddle of Mudd, and P.O.D. have all been added to the 2012 Rocklahoma bill.

Tickets are running at $99 plus service fees for all three days. Bring a tent to Pyror, Oklahoma. The camping at this festival is one giant party and well worth the trip.
