With regard to the life and music of Cristina Branco (b. 1972, Almeirim, Portugal), one could say – as in the lyric by Amália Rodrigues – that she lives and breathes fado.
It was a serendipitous set of circumstances that first brought fado music into Cristina’s life. Though, in a certain way, it was Cristina – with her aesthetic daring and unique interpretive style – who happened upon fado, and in its most deeply traditional musical and social form. “It started as a kind of game, as an evening of songs among friends,” she likes to recall.
Nothing about Cristina, up to this time – her adolescence – indicated she might be a fado singer. Before entering the world of menores, mourarias or maiores ** with her friends and later with adults, she was not in the habit of going to fado clubs or listening to recordings by the well-known singers. She knew some songs that her maternal grandfather used to sing to himself, lyrics and melodies that she would improvise on without realizing how they were entering her – and how they would decide her destiny. But at that time, she felt herself more drawn to Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, Janis Joplin and Joni Mitchell, than Amália Rodrigues. So when, for her 18th birthday, her grandfather gave her Rara e Inédita (Rare and Unreleased Recordings), a major work – though not well-known – by fado music’s greatest diva, she had no idea of how it would end up changing her life.

In deze acht-delige serie neemt Ali B een rapper uit zijn wereld mee naar die van een artiest van vroeger, met de bedoeling een 'remix' van elkaars hit te maken. Meestal kennen de 'oude' en 'nieuwe' artiesten elkaar niet of hebben ze vaag iets over de ander gehoord. Het is aan Ali B om de brug te slaan en dat lukt hem heel goed. Aan het eind van elke aflevering, in de studio in Almere, laten de artiesten elkaar live het liedje horen dat zij de afgelopen week hebben gemaakt. En dat levert een serie van veertien hele bijzonder en persoonlijke tracks op die nu gebundeld zijn.
In het theaterseizoen 2009/10 stond Ali B ruim 80 keer op het podium in theater door heel Nederland met de tweede cabaretvoorstelling 'Wie Ali zegt, moet B zeggen' en volgde een hectisch jaar als vader, tv-bekendheid en entertainer. Nu, in 2011, werkt Ali B aan zijn derde album en aan een nieuwe serie 'Ali B Op Volle Toeren'.
De artiest Ali B behoeft nauwelijks introductie. Als rapper debuteerde hij in 2004 met het album 'Het Leven van de Straat' wat hem diverse muziekprijzen en waardering van een breed publiek opleverde. Kort daarop scoorde hij samen met Marco Borsato een nr 1 hit. Ali B ontwikkelde zich als een veelzijdig artiest. Zijn internationale succes, met gigs op enkele van de grootste evenementen, ging ook aan zijn thuisland niet voorbij. Al drie jaar op rij heeft John de ‘Best DJ’ award bij de Irish Dance Music Award ontvangen. Maar John is niet iemand om daar lang in te blijven hangen. 15 april markeert de release van John’s, naar eigen zeggen, beste album tot nu toe. ‘Unfold’ bestaat uit 14 tracks, die de grenzen van alle stijlen dance muziek opzoeken. Onder het motto ” wij vertellen hun verhaal en spelen hun muziek” spelen we een selectie van beroemde Broadway Musical composities met werk van de Amerikaanse componisten Gershwin, Porter, Arlen, Rodgers, Hart, Hammerstein en Kern.

Dit format is gebaseerd op “The Geniuses of the American Musical Theatre” van de Amerikaanse musicalkenner Dr. Herbert Keyser die in Amerika in theaters zijn programma brengt. Focus “The Band”

With their unique progressive rock Focus manifested themselves at the start of the seventies as the most successful and the most appreciated of all the Dutch pop-rock exports.
The band were fronted by the much admired duo of Thijs van Leer on the Hammond organ/flute and Jan Akkerman on the guitar. Their hit potential came in the form of a couple of instrumentals, "Hocus Pocus", "House of the King", and "Sylvia", but we shouldn't forget their timeless albums "Moving Waves", "Focus 3" and "Hamburger Concerto". But like all good things, it couldn't last and internal wrangling ended this legendary group.
