Jagjit Singh -The Gazal Maestro Of Indian Music

Today we are suffering big loss to our music culture & music industry.The Gazal Samrat 'Jagjit Singh' passed away due to brain haemorrhage early morning today at 8.10 am in Lilavati Hospital of mumbai.He is survived by only wife. Whole music industry & people who loves to listen Gazals mourning over the death of Gazal maestro.
Jagjit Singh was born on February 8, 1941in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. He had four sisters and two brothers and he is known as Jeet by his family.He has sung many songs & gazals for bollywood music & non filmi Gazals.He sungs in Hindi,Urdu,Punjabi & Nepali languages.He was the winner of Padma Bhushan for his contribution in Indian Music.He with his wife chitra who is also a Gazal singer recorded as most successful duo of husband-wife in 1970's to 1980's. He made people to listen Gazals as his voice & its expressions used to engross people. Jagjjit Singh has also sung for popular movies like Arth, Prem Geet, Sarfarosh and Tarqeeb. Jagjit Singh was the first Indian composer, and together with his wife Chitra Singh the first recording artist in the history of Indian music to use digital multi-track recording for their album, Beyond Time (1987) , that was India's first Digitally Recorded Album. On May 10, 2007, in a milestone joint session held in the historic Central Hall of India's Parliament (Sansad Bhawan), Jagjit Singh sung "Lagta nahin hai dil mera" , famous ghazal of the last Moghul Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar's to commemorate the 150th anniversary of India's First War of Independence that is 1857.He has given the modern face to Indian Gazals.
Jagjit Singh will always be remebered by indians for his immortal Gazals.It is really difficult to fill his place in Indian Music.May god give immortal peace to his soul.

Today is 28th September ,the first day of Navratri's nine day festival of India.The same day Indian Music had given birth to the most eminent & revered personality of Lata Mangeshkar.We refers her as Gankokila or Gansamradyni or Cuckoo of India. In 1929,on same day india's most lovable personality born in family of Dinanath Mangeshkar.She was the eldest of all her 3 sisters & 1 brother.Meena,Asha,Usha & Hridaynath are the siblings of Lata Didi.Father Pt.Dinanath was a theater artist who used to make play's in Marathi. Lata didi first acted in his musical play & her named had changed from Hema to Lata of the one of character from play.His father was from Goa & her mother who was second wife of Dinanath Mangeshkar was from Thalner of Dhule district in Maharashtra.
She had started her singing career in 1942,she wanted not to sing for Bollywood Movies as her father wished of to. But,in early days of her young hood ,she lost father Pt.Dinanath Mageshkar ,being eldest among all she had to carry forward family after father's death ,she resorted to Bollywood for singing in order to feed her family.She always wanted to learn Indian Classical Music which she had never managed to learn in her career. Didi has sung more than 10 thousands songs & worked with all musician & singers of her era, her name is recorded in Guinness Book Of World Record for recording most number of songs.She has 62 years of singing career in which Didi sung 36 regional language songs.She has been awarded by BHARATRATNA award which is best & biggest civil award given by Government Of India for her contribution to Indian Music. The song sung by Didi on the eve of 15th August,1947 "Ae mere vatan ke logon " was alluring & touching one that made india's first prime minister cry.Didi has won many awards in her singing career like filmfares & more.Recently she has been awarded with 'Hridaynath Award' in honor of his younger brother who is the best well known Music Composer in Marathi Music Industry.

No indian whether he knows about Music would never forget Lata Didi's immortal voice & would always be thankful for her contribution for the country.We all indians are thankful of whole Mangeshkar family for their enormous contribution to Indian Music Culture.

This time india's cultural city Pune organized the Drum Festival or Dumru on 16th of September 2011, it was three days event & there were around 24 percussionists has been performed individually & in fusion as Jugalbandi. Despite of having rich legacy of Music, that kind event had never been organized in country.The actor Rahul Solapurkar & tabla player Vijay Ghate had announced the three day festival. Music does exist in every part of nature and can be generated from any kind of source of living and non-living organism.In our daily life we use certain stuff like our utensils which can be great source of melody in music.There are sort of music instruments that are originated from things we use in our day to day life.

Jal Tarang : This instrument is indian melodic percussion instrument. It is made of ceramic bowl that are arranged in semi circle order.The bowls we used for taking soup,light meal etc.are ingredients of making this instrument.The bowl are filled with water and bowls are played by striking the edge with beaters, one in each hand.by adjusting the level of water,it creates myriads of music .In indian classical music,it is categorized into Ghan Vadya.In the wave-instruments, it is the most prominent and ancient instrument. Jal-tarang was also called jal-yantra.In bollywood ,this instrument used in song 'Gharse Nikalte Hi' of movie 'Papa Kehte Hai'.

Ghatam : This instrument is nothing but Matka,Ghada or it can be Maath ,pot made up of clay.Basically Ghatam is used in South india .It is one of fine instrument in indian carnatic music .There is analogue of it in Rajasthan called as madga or pani madaqa.the artist uses the fingers, thumbs, palms, and heels of the hands to strike its outer surface. An airy low-pitch bass sound, called gumki, is created by hitting the mouth of the pot with an open hand.Like jal tarang,we can create different tones by hitting different part of Matka or Ghatam.In bollywood ,this instrument is popular & used various bollywood songs like song 'chappa Chappa Charakha chale' of movie named 'Machis' and composed by one of well known indian musician Vishal Bharadwaj.The songs starts with tone of Ghatam.

Ektar :Ektar is the medicants' drone. A round stick of about 4 feet length and less than 2" in diameter forms the finger-board. One end of this stick is provided with a tuning peg and the other end is passed through a hollow gourd resonator. It has an open string, one end of which is fastened to a nail fixed on to the projection of the stick beyond the resonator. From here, the string passes over a crude wooden bridge placed on the gourd and then fastened to the peg at the top. To increase the richness of tone, a silken or woollen thread is placed between the bridge and the string. The instrument is held either in the right hand or the left hand and the fore-finger is used to pluck the string. The gourd is nothing but the vegetable we used is our regular meal. It is called as Bhopala or Louki in our local and national language.

Sanku or Shankha:The most ancient wind instrument known to man. It is represented in the Amaravathi and Sanchi sculptures (3rd century B.C.). It is held very sacred and reference to it is found in all the literature of India. It is one of the attributes of Sri Vishnu. The conch used by Sri Krishna was called "Panchajanya". The conch is blown through a small hole made in the spiral. It is used in temples, religious ceremonies and processions. Its tone has a distinctive quality of its own and can be heard at long distance.

Ghungaroo:Ghungaroo is basically used by indian classical dancers.The sounds produced by ghungroos vary greatly in pitch depending on their metallic composition and size. Ghungroos serve to accentuate the rhythmic aspects of the dance and allow complex footwork to be heard by the audience. They are worn immediately above the ankle, resting on the lateral malleolus and medial malleolus. A string of ghungroos can range from 50 to greater than 200 bells knotted together.In bollywood ,most of the art movies songs made use of Ghungaroo.

Tutari: The Tutari in Maharashtra, a bugle-like instrument, has survived not just because of its connections to royal traditions, but also because of its adaptability, as a current political symbol.Basically, tutari used to of making or announcing of arrival of kings or lords.In the tradition of Palkhi in maharshtra, people used to play Tutari to indicate march of saints or their deities.
Dhol: The Dhol is the identity of Punjab in india .This instrument is of high brass and more energetic like Punjabis. People in punjab plays dhol in almost every occasion & tradition like marriage & their albums.Punjabi music recently pne the most popular music in india & western region of the world.Dhol is the soul of Punjabi music.
Sarangi:The Sarangi is the most important folk music instrument and is found in various forms in Rajasthan.There are different types or we can say versions of Sarangi that Rajasthani people plays for the entertainment of crowd or mob. The tourists from all over the world who comes to Rajasthan for its great heritage has special attraction of Sarangi.Rawanhatha & Kamaycha,Surinda,Chikara are the different versions of Sarangi that comes in small sizes & played .using bow.

Sumui(Flute):Sumui (Flute) is one of the most ancient and common instrument in the musical tradition of Tripura. Sumui, is the most perfect and least mechanical of all the instruments. The sumui is very dear to the tribes of Tripura. It is made of bamboo. There are two types of sumui, one having 7 (seven) holes and the other having 8 (eight) hole. Mostly found are two maipulator characteristic features:
Veena:It is the most popular musical instrument of South India, popularly known as the Saraswati Veena. It is a plucked string instrument that is designed and used to accompany Carnatic music. There are several variations of the veena, which in its South Indian form is a member of the lute family. One who plays the veena is referred to as a vainika.

Nadaswaram:Nadaswaram, also known as Nadaswaram, is considered to be one of the most ancient and unique musical instruments of Tamil Nadu. It is extremely appropriate to call this instrument a rare combination of music and divinity, because of its consideration as a very auspicious instrument and is found at temples and at weddings.

Chenda:Cylindrical in shape, Chenda is an extremely popular instrument in Kerala and some parts of Karnataka as well. It is a percussion instrument and is also called Chende in Karnataka. It usually accompanies Hindu religious art forms of Kerala. Chenda is used as accompaniment for Kathakali and Koodiyattam dances and rituals in Kerala.
Santoor:In India, "Santoor" was used as an accompaniment instrument to the folk music of Kashmir. It was a 100-stringed instrument played in a style of music known as the Sufiana Mausiqi. The Sufi mystics used it as an accompaniment to their hymns.The original Sanskrit name of Santoor was "Shatha Tantri Veena" meaning a lute or a stringed instrument that has over hundred strings. Santoor is a Persian name to this same instrument "Shatha Tantri Veena" that has references back to Vedic literature.

Bansuri: This classical instrument mostly used in state of Bihar & Uttar Pradesh.It is one the most melody sound producing instrument. In indian ancient history, Bansuri was used by Lord Krishna as he was the greatest flutist in indian society could remember.It is basically a straight bamboo with hole in it & it produces a sound when air flows through it.

Nature & Music gives evidence of their relationship in various ways that every one could understand.When one sees water falling from heights ,he not only loves the scene but also the sound that spawned from falling of water ,when someone stands in open ground in forest surrounded by cloudy environment,he gets excited by the sound of flowing of air ,in the early morning when one get wake up ,he used to pleased with sound of chirping of birds.There are lot more & many more evidences we encounter with daily.

Basically indian classical music is divided into two parts as Hindustani Music and Carnatic Music.These two types of music represents regions in india ,Hindustani Music was basically formed in North India & it reflects the influence of persian and Islamic music.of Islamic Era in india.In carnatic music emphasis is on vocal,most composition written to be sung & when played on instruments,they meant to be performed in Gayaki..Carnatic music is a very complex system of music that requires much thought, both artistically and technically.

Purandara Dasa

Although there are stylistic differences, the basic elements of sruti (the relative musical pitch), swara (the musical sound of a single note), rāga (the mode or melodic formulæ), and tala (the rhythmic cycles) form the foundation of improvisation and composition in both Carnatic and Hindustani music.There are many composers in Carnatic music. Purandara Dasa (1480–1564) is known as the father (Pitamaha) of Carnatic music because of his pioneering contributions to Carnatic music. Purandara Dasa is renowned for formulating the basic lessons of Carnatic music. He structured graded exercises known as Swaravalis and Alankaras, and at the same time, introduced the Raga Mayamalavagowla as the first scale to be learnt by beginners. He also composed Gitas (simple songs) for novice students.Important elements of carnatic music are Sruti,Swara,Raga system,Tala system.Swara refers to a type of musical sound that is a single note, which defines a relative (higher or lower) position of a note, rather than a defined frequency.[19] Swaras also refer to the solfege(vocal excersise) of Carnatic music, which consist of seven notes, "sa-ri-ga-ma-pa-da-ni" (compare with the Hindustani sargam: sa-re-ga-ma-pa-dha-ni or Western do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti). These names are abbreviations of the longer names shadja, rishabha, gandhara, madhyama, panchama, dhaivata and nishada.

Shriniwas khale well known as khale kaka was one of all time favorite music composer in marathi & hindi music industry in india.Indian music industry is in deep grief of sad demise of khale kaka.He was one of the most respected artists in the Marathi music industry for over six decades. He was the recipient of Padma Bhushan award in 2010.

   Shriniwas khale alias khale kaka was from a village called Parali in Kokan-Raigad zilla, Maharashtra, India.He composed numerous songs in five languages like marathi,gujrati,hindi,bengali and sanskrit.He worked with many artists in bollywood like gan kokila lata mageshkar,asha bhosle,mohd. rafi,manna dey,suresh wadkar & many more.Khale Kaka was also the only musician to bring along two Bharat Ratna recipient singers, Smt Lata Mangeshkar and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi for a Hindi bhajan (devotional song) album Ram Shyam Gun Gan. His last album "Nath Maza Mi Nathancha" was released in September 2009 which includes Abhangas Bhaktigeetas by Saint Krishnadas.
                      Shriniwas Khale began his music lessons with Kanchanlal, a gujrati music teacher. He continued then with Pt. Bansilal Bharati, Gulam Rasool, Aftaab e Mousiqui Faiyaaz Khan Sahab, Ustad Atta Hussainkhan and then Pt. Madhusudan Joshi. It was from the latter two that he learned the Agra gharana gayaki.He began his journey as a music director for All India Radio (AIR) in 1945. He went on his first Gujarati recording of Talat Mahmood in Gramaphone Company India Limited in 1950.He had left home to pursue his career in music from Baroda. In 1970 Shrinivas Khale - Ek Sankalan by Mauj Publishers was released for completing 25 years as a successful music director. He was profiled in Who's Who London (1978), Voice of America (1988), Radio Sydney, Australia (2000). In 2009 Datta Marulkar wrote a book Antaryami Surr Gavasala about Khale.
   Shankar mahadevan one the best music composer & singer of bollywood music industry learnt lessons of music from khale kaka when he was just 10 year old.Shriniwas khale most of marathi hits songs were written by well known marathi poet & his good friend Shri Mangesh Padgaonkar .Songs written & compose by duo were so famous in marathi music industry.Finally,shriniwas khale alias khale kaka took his last breath at the age of 85 in his house in neighbouring Thane this month on 2 september 2011 of short illness.He was survived by wife & three daughters.May god give peace to his soul.

Sachin Dev Burman , also credited as Burman da, Kumar Sachindra Dev Barman, Sachin karta or S. D. Burman, was one of the most famous music composers for Hindi movies and a Bengali singer and composer. His son Rahul Dev Burman also achieved great success as a Bollywood music director in his own right. S D Burman composed music for 100 movies, including Bengali films. S. D. Burman was born on 1 October 1906, in Comilla, British India, now in Bangladesh, to Rajkumari Nirmala Devi, princess of Manipur and Nabadwipchandra Dev Burman, the second son of 'Ishanachandra Dev Burman', Raja of Tripura, (r. 1849-1862). Sachin was the youngest of the five sons, of his parents, who had nine children in all.Early on in his career, he refused to allow his voice be lip-synced on film by actors,^[4] as a result, even later on, in Hindi cinema, his thin yet powerful voice was often used as bardic commentary to haunting results, as in Ore Majhi Mere Sajan Hai Us Paar Bandini (1963), Wahaan Kaun hai Tera from "Guide" (1965) and finally Safal Hogi Teri Aradhana from Aradhana (1969),^[15] for which he received the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the year, 1970 .

Omkar Prasad Nayyar (16 January 1926 – 28 January 2007) was an Indian film music director and composer born in Lahore, India, now in modern day Pakistan. He was particularly acclaimed for his peppy numbers.

O.P. is reported to have commanded the highest fees in the Hindi movie music world at the height of his reign as a composer. He was the first Hindi music director to receive 100,000 rupees for his compositions for a movie. It was a very substantial sum of money in the 1950s.O.P. was known to have a stubborn individuality, and traits of aloofness and imperiousness. However, he was always generous with struggling newcomers and artists who had been marginalized in the movie industry. The press was always deferential to him, and frequently referred to him as a "rebel" composer. Many columnists too labeled him as a maverick. Judging from his combative performance in various TV talk shows later on, O.P. seemed to enjoy those epithets.

O.P. worked extensively with Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhosle, and Mohammed Rafi, and was instrumental in building their careers. Some Bollywood observers maintained that Asha Bhosle was his find and that he groomed her specially for his tunes. Many of his compositions which Asha sang are memorable and have a contemporary flair.O.P. never worked with Lata Mangeshkar, the melody queen.

Shankar Jaikishan also known as S/J, is an Indian music composer duo in the Hindi film industry, working together from 1949–1971.Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi (25 October 1922 – 26 April 1987) born in Tanuku, west godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, but was a native of Rajasthan originally while Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal (4 November 1929 – 12 September 1971) belonged to Bansda (Vansada), Gujarat.

Shankar-Jaikishan were the pioneers in establishing the role of the orchestra in song compositions as a medium to express and enhance the meanings and feelings of songs rather than using it just as a `filler' as per the prevalent practice before their advent on the scene. Shankar-Jaikishan made a significant contribution in promoting Indian classical music throughout their career. It was their established practice to have at least one song in a movie based on semi-classical style.

Shankar Jaikishan had the major contribution towards the development of Jazz music in India and the new genre Indo Jazz. Their 1968 album Raaga-Jazz style is the earliest Indo-Jazz recording in India. In this album, considered to be one of the most innovative, SJ created 11 songs based on Indian Ragas with saxophone, trumpet, sitar (by Rais Khan), tabla, bass etc.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal Pyare were a popular Indian composer duo, consisting of Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar (1937–1998) and Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma (born 1940).Laxmikant was born into a poor family. He was quite impressed by mandolin and learnt to play it on his own eventually playing the mandolin publicly in street functions.Pyarelal was the son of a renowned trumpeter Pt. Ramprasad Sharma (popularly known as Babaji), who taught him the basics of music. He learnt to play violin from a Goan musician named Anthony Gonsalves.Laxmi-Pyare gave Indian classical music as well as Western music. But they were most popular for their folk tunes and semi-classical music.

Lata Mangeshkar played a major role in shaping up the careers of LP. She sang the maximum numbers of songs for them. She sounded extremely melodious under LP. Lata Mangeshkar and Laxmikant-Pyarelal shared a long, close and rewarding association.

Naushad Ali ( December 25, 1919 – May 5, 2006) was an Indian musician. He was one of the foremost music directors for Bollywood films of all time, and is particularly known for popularizing the use of classical music in films. Naushad was raised as a Muslim in Lucknow, a city with a long tradition as a center of Muslim culture. His father, Wahid Ali, was a munshi (court clerk). As a child, Naushad would visit the annual fair at the Deva Sharif in Barabanki, 25 km from Lucknow, where all the great qawwals and musicians of those days would perform before the devotees, and Naushad would sit there, listening to those wondrous melodies. He studied classic Hindustani music there under Ustad Ghurbat Ali, Ustad Yusuf Ali, Ustad Babban Saheb, and others. He repaired harmoniums.

Naushad was known for his deft adaptation of the classical musical tradition for movies. For some movies like Baiju Bawra, he composed all scores in classical raga modes. He could easily work with Western instruments, including the clarinet, the mandolin, and the accordion. He could incorporate Western musical idioms in his compositions, and compose for Western-style orchestras.He composed the tunes of Taj Mahal: An Eternal Love Story (2005) at the age of 86, thus becoming the world's oldest composer.

Usha Khanna (born 1941 in Gwalior) is an Indian music director. Regarded as the first established female music director in the Indian film industry, she remained active for more than 3 decades from 1960s to 1980s. She is still active making some music for some movies and television-serials, more than 40 years after her debut as music director in Dil Deke Dekho (1959). She received a Filmfare nomination for composing the songs for the huge hit film Souten (1983).

After she started composing music for Hindi movies, Usha Khanna struggled to establish herself as a music director, despite producing many hit songs. She often collaborated with Asha Bhosle, who referred to Usha Khanna as her daughter, and Mohammed Rafi. This trio produced many hit songs.Saawan Kumar was often the lyricist for Usha Khanna, and wrote most of his lyrics for her songs. He directed and produced the lyrics for eleven movies she scored the music for. In 1979 K J Yesudas received Filmfare award for her song Dil ke tukde tukde in the film Dada. The 1950s were possibly Shankar's most creative period: he composed and performed, worked as musical director of All-India Radio in Delhi, created the Vadya Vrinda Chamber Orchestra, scored films (most notably the Apu Trilogy of director Satyajit Ray) and began touring the world and winning acclaim for himself and for Indian music. In the 1960s Shankar grew still more famous for his influence on The Beatles, who used a sitar in some of their more psychedelic tunes. (Shankar was particular friends with George Harrison, who produced some of Shankar's later albums.) As years passed Shankar became known less as a performer and more as an elder statesman of world music. In 2000 he was given the French Legion of Honor, and in 2001 he was awarded an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II.

Hari Prassad Chaurasia Born: July 1, 1938,Achievement: Noted flute player; recipient of Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhusan. Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, is a world-renowned exponent of the bansuri or bamboo flute. He is one of those rare classical musicians who expanded the peripheries of classical music by taking it to the common masses.

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia was born on July 1, 1938 at Allahabad in a non-musical family. His father was a wrestler and wanted him to become one. Scared of his father, Hari Prasad Chaurasia learnt music secretly. At the age of 15, he started learning vocal music from Pandit Rajaram. After some time, he switched to learning flute under the guidance of Pt. Bholanath of Varanasi. Later on, while working for All India Radio, he received guidance from the reclusive Annapurna Devi (daughter of Baba Allaudin Khan).

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia has introduced several innovations in the art of playing flute. He has significantly expanded the expressive possibilities of North Indian classical flute through his masterful blowing technique. Hariprasad Chaurasia has also made his mark as music director in the Hindi film industry. In partnership with Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, he has given music in several hit Hindi films such as "Silsila", "Chandni", and "Lamhe".Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia has won several honors and awards. These include: Sangeet Natak Academy Award (1984), Padma Bhushan (1992), and Padma Vibhusan (2000).

Ustad Bismillah Khan Born: March 21, 1916,Died: August 21, 2006 ,Achievement: Brought shehnai to the center stage of Indian classical music; Became the third classical musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.The legendary shehnai player, Ustad Bismillah Khan was one of India's most celebrated classical musicians. Bismillah Khan has been credited with taking the shehnai from the marriage mandap to the concert hall.
Ustad Bismillah Khan brought Shehnai to the center stage of Indian classical music with his concert in the Calcutta All India Music Conference in 1937. He had the honor of performing at Delhi's Red Fort on the occasion of India's Independence on August 15, 1947. Bismillah Khan mesmerized everyone with his heart-touching rendering of Raga Kafi from the Red Fort on the eve of India's first Republic Day ceremony, on January 26, 1950. Ustad Bismillah Khan was a recipient of many honors and awards. Dandiya is a form of dance-oriented folk music that has also been adapted for pop music. The present musical style is derived from the traditional musical accompaniment to the folk dance. Uttarakhani Music

Lavani comes from the word Lavanya which means beauty. This is one of the most popular forms of dance and music that is practiced all over Maharashtra. It has in fact become a necessary part of the Maharashtrian folk dance performances. Traditionally, the songs are sung by female artistes, but male artistes may occasionally sing Lavanis. The dance format associated with Lavani is known as Tamasha. Lavani is a combination of traditional song and dance, which particularly performed to the enchanting beats of 'Dholak', an drum like instrument. Dance performed by attractive women wearing nine-yard saris. They are sung in a quick tempo. The verve, the enthusiasm, the rhythm and above all the very beat of India finds an expressive declaration amidst the folk music of India, which has somewhat, redefined the term "bliss". Lavani originated in the arid region of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
Rabindra Sangeet
Rabindranath Tagore was a towering figure in Indian music. Writing in Bengali, he created a library of over 2,000 songs now known by Bengalis as 'rabindra sangeet' whose form is primarily influenced by Hindustani classical, sub-classicals, Karnatic, western, bauls, bhatiyali and different folk songs of India. Many singers in West Bengal and Bangladesh base their entire careers on the singing of Tagore musical masterpieces. The national anthem of India and national anthem of Bangladesh are Rabindra Sangeets.

Raga is a noun derived from the Sanskrit root ranj, meaning to colour red, to delight.Red is the colour of passion, hence raga implies the emotional content of a song which delights the listener.King Nanyadeva of Mithila (1097-1147) wrote that the variety of ragas is in finite, and their individual features are hard to put into words. He wrote : Just as the sweetness of sugar, treacle and candy cannot be separately described, but must be experienced for oneself.A raga must evoke a particular emotion or create a certain 'mood'.Each Raga has a name. It also has a character, which can be devotional, erotic, bold and valorous, or tragic.Time of day when it is best performed, usually specified as a 3 hour interval. However the beauty of the raga is not affected by the time of the day it is sung.
Some Ragas are related to seasons. For example, Raga Malhar.Ragas are not static. Some can be traced back to ancient or medieval times, others originated only a few centuries or even a few decades ago.However, all ragas have undergone transformations over the centuries. Many of them have fallen into disuse.

Indian Music Instruments

Flute

Flute is a simple cylindrical tube of uniform bore and associated with Indian music since time immemorial. Flutes vary in size. Flute is held horizontally and is inclined downwards when it is played. To produce sound or melody one has to cover the finger holes with the fingers of the left and right hand. Variations in pitch are produced by altering the effective length of the air column. Notable flute exponents are Pt Pannalal Ghosh and Pt Hari Prashad Chaurasia.

Shehnai
Shehnai is a traditional musical instrument, associated with auspicious occasions like marriages and temple processions. Shehnai is a double reed instrument with a tapering bore which progressively increases towards the lower side. The Shehnai has finger-holes to produce semi, quarter and micro-tones. Ustad Bismillah Khan is the unrivalled maestro of the Shehnai.

Tabla
The most popular musical instrument used in North India is the Tabla. The Tabla consists of a pair of drums- the Tabla and the Bayan. The Tabla is made of wood and whereas its head is made of stretched animal skin. Finer tuning of Tabla is done by striking the rim of the Tabla with a small hammer. The Bayan is the bass drum and is usually made of metal with a stretched skin head. Both drums have a black spot in the center made of manganese or iron dust.

Veena
The saraswati vina has an interesting construction. It has a body made of wood, generally, this is jackwood. The highest quality vinas have the entire body carved from a single block of wood, while the ordinary vinas have a body which is carved in three sections (resonator, neck and head). There are 24 frets made of brass bars set into wax. (see "Fretting and Fingering the Vina") There is another resonator at the top of the neck. This is no longer a functioning resonator, but is mainly used as a stand to facilitate the positioning of the instrument when it is played. Because it is no longer functioning it is not unusual to find that this upper resonator may be made of acoustically neutral materials such as paper mache, cane or other similar materials.

To many people in many cultures music is an important part of their way of life. Greek philosophers and ancient Indian philosophers defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. Common sayings such as “the harmony of the spheres” and “it is music to my ears” point to the notion that music is often ordered and pleasant to listen to.

Indian Music History

The origins of Indian classical music can be found in the oldest of scriptures, part of the Hindu tradition, the Vedas. It has also been significantly influenced by Indian folk music, and Hindustani music has been influenced by Persian music. The Samaveda, one of the four Vedas, describes music at length. The Samaveda was created out of Rigveda so that its hymns could be sung as Samagana; this style evolved into jatis and eventually into ragas. Indian classical music has its origins as a meditation tool for attaining self realization. Bharat’s Natyashastra was the first treatise laying down fundamental principles of dance, music and drama.

Indian classical music is both elaborate and expressive. Like Western classical music, it divides the octave into 12 semitones of which the 7 basic notes are Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa, in order, replacing Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do. However, it uses the just intonation tuning, unlike most modern Western classical music, which uses the equal-temperament tuning system.
Indian classical music is monophonic in nature and based around a single melody line, which is played over a fixed drone. The performance is based melodically on particular ragas and rhythmically on talas. Because of the focus on exploring the raga, performances have traditionally been solo endeavors, but duets are gaining in popularity.
