The show starts at 7:30pm and tickets are £6 and £4 with concessions.

The MS support group was formed last May by Livingston woman Fiona Howarth, age 29, to enable people affected by MS to get together locally and share their experiences. The group meets once a fortnight at the Ability Centre and welcome members from Livingston to Edinburgh. Fiona was diagnosed with MS in 2007 and says:

‘Everyone who attends the group feels less alone. It can be very hard to explain to someone who has little or no knowledge of MS about some of the symptoms and how you feel about them. In the group most of the members will have experienced something similar and everyone shares these experiences.’

Fiona hopes to raise funds to give members of the group more opportunities to organise trips and plans to take the group to the theatre and the Falkirk Wheel. She has organised the evening with the support of her mother Gwyneth, one of Ceilidhoke’s fiddle players.

Gwyneth says
‘I am very proud of Fiona for getting the MS support group up and running. It has given her a focus as well as helping other people. I was devastated when she was diagnosed with MS and I hope that they find a cure; but getting involved in this group and with the MS Society Scotland has been very positive. I hope that this evening is a success. If you come along you will be tapping your feet, clapping your hands and enjoying yourself! This kind of music can be enjoyed by all ages - it has the feel good factor!’

To book tickets please call the Howden Park Centre box office on 01506 777 666
FeedBurner

Fest 'n' Furious - 2nd - 5th October 2009

Dundee's festival of traditional and roots music with live music, workshops, masterclasses, talks, ceilidhs and the fantastic Choired for Sound Big Sing.
www.festnfurious.co.uk
FeedBurner

2009 World Pipe Band Championships DVDs & CDs

The 2009 World Pipe Band Championships DVDs and CDs are now on sale. Heritage charity release fundraising single.

Please take the time to read this email about our new Scottish community Arts and Heritage group, and our first project.

About the group:
The "Helensburgh Heroes" charity aim to promote and provide Arts and Heritage opportunities in our local area (something that we sadly lack here) and to make people aware of the famous people who were born, or have lived, in Helensburgh, such as the inventor of television, John Logie Baird, actress Deborah Kerr and film star, Jack Buchanan (The 'Heroes'). Helensburgh Heroes is socially inclusive.
www.helensburghheroes.com

About the project:
Our first project is a community recording of David Bowie's song 'Heroes' by 'The Helensburgh Heroes Experience', which is to be released as a single on 1st August 2009, in order to raise both awareness and funds for our charity.
We involved as many local people, of all ages, as we possibly could, to take part in this, and are very proud that every single person involved in this recording was from the area (From Helensburgh to the Roseneath Peninsula).
http://www.helensburghheroes.com/news/video_trailer_helensburgh_heroes_experience_version_bowies_heroes

Support for the project:
Practical support has come through a grant from the Scottish Community Foundation to enable us to make the recording.Sections of the media in Scotland are also promoting it's release - STV News at 6, BBC Radio Scotland and our local radio station Your Radio, local newspapers and National press.David Bowie's own publishing / record company (Fairwood) were pleasantly surprised by the quality of our version of the song. A spokesman said, "You can hear the passion in it" and have given us their full blessing.David Bowie himself has shown a personal interest in our project and his official website has a news item on their front page about our recording. You can view the full story here http://www.davidbowie.com/news/index.php?id=20090710

How you can help support our project:1. Ten acts from the various Celtic and Scots languages travelled from far and wide to Eden Court Theatre, Inverness, Scotland, to perform in front of an enthusiastic audience. The event was also broadcast live over the internet.

The live audience as well as the global internet audience voted for their favourite act and ultimately chose the young Isle of Lewis rock act Sunrise Not Secular singing their song Lasair an t-Oidhche (Flame of the Night) in Scottish Gaelic. Lead vocalist, David Nicolson said David said "Nòs Ùr was one of the most incredible experiences to date for Sunrise Not Secular. Winning the vote was incredibly humbling, a great victory for the Gaelic language and a testament to the fans' overwhelming support. We couldn't be happier."

Five independent jury members, representing the various language groups, decided to give the jury winners prize to the respected Dublin singer-songwriter Fiach who's song was titled Sea Táim (So I) in Irish Gaelic.

The event was hosted by TV star Tony Kearney and acclaimed singer-songwriter Karine Polwart who enthralled the audience after the intermission with her own newly composed song in the Scots tongue.

Micheal Russell MSP, the Minister for Culture, External Affairs & The Constitution, gave a rousing speech at the prize-giving stating “In Scotland, we need to make sure, in every circumstance, that Gaelic and Scots is spoken, particularly on stage, in music, for audiences who wish to hear it. The songs you heard tonight are a celebration of all the Celtic and Scots language nations.”

Event organiser, Brian Ó hEadhra said “Nòs Ùr grows year on year and the positive feedback from the audience and artistes has been incredible. The event challenges old fashioned notions some folk have about minority language speakers and we aim to demonstrate that there is a vibrant and healthy future for our indigenous languages.”
FeedBurner

HIGHLAND CAPITAL (AND THE WORLD) SET TO BE ROCKED BY CELTIC & SCOTS ACTS

This weekend Eden Court Theatre, Inverness, will be a hive of Celtic and Scots language activity with a number of events celebrating new song-writing and developments in these ancient tongues.

The main event is Nòs Ùr on Saturday night which is a new song competition for all the Celtic and Scots languages. There are ten selected acts travelling to Inverness who will perform a diverse range of music from rock, rap, pop and folk. The MC's for the evening are acclaimed singer-songwriter Karine Polwart (who will also perform with Kim Edgar after the intermission) and television star Tony Kearney.

For those who are not lucky enough to be able to be present at the competition, Nòs Ùr will be broadcast live over the internet from 7:30pm British Summer Time. www.nos-ur.eu. The audience will be able to vote in the hall and the public will be able to vote online. These results will be combined to select the public winners of Nòs Ùr. An international jury will select the jury winners of the competition who, along with the public winners, will perform at the pan-European minority language song competition – Liet International, in Friesland in October. Entry to Nòs Ùr is free for under 16's.

On Friday night three teenage bands have been chosen to play at Nòs Òg which showcases young up-and-coming acts. This event starts at 7:30pm is free entry.

To augment the Nòs Òg and Nòs Ùr events on Saturday morning there will be a music industry panel discussion controversially titled: “Do you have to sing in English to be successful?” Start time 11:30am at Eden Court.

Event organiser Brian Ó hEadhra says: “We are very excited about this second year of Nòs Ùr. We have added the Nòs Òg event as well as the industry discussion and there has been a lot of interest from home and abroad. There really is something for all the family at this hugely entertaining event.”

Finally, on Saturday (daytime) in Eden Court, UHI Millennium Institute is hosting a conference called Voices of the West with the theme “Politicising Minority Languages”. But they excelled themselves this weekend with a clean sweep of the awards at the annual Rest of the World vs Orkney musicians football match at this years Orkney Folk Festival.

Karine Polwart shared the Best Player award with her brother Steven, and Tom Bancroft (who was in goal for the Orkney team for reasons that were never clear) received an award for services to Orkney football and...er 'horticulture' (sic). The coveted worst player award was scooped by fellow Pathheidian Inge Thomson , coveted it should be said because it was the only prize that came with a bottle of Jack Daniels!!

www.pathheadmusiccollective.co.uk
www.tombancroft.co.uk
www.karinepolwart.com

for more info call Tom Bancroft on 07974 983701

FeedBurner

Peatbog Faeries - Live [CD] CDBOG005

The "Live Act Of The Year" - recorded live - is guaranteed to be good. The concert is on the 19 June and acts as the opening event to the Nòs Ùr Celtic & Scots languages song competition which has 10 musical acts hoping to win a place at the pan-European minority language song competition – Liet International, in Friesland, Netherlands in October.

“The teen event, called Nòs Òg – meaning 'young style' in Scottish Gaelic aims to encourage young people to perform in their own languages as well as expose their music to a wider audience” states event director Brian Ó hEadhra. “There is a wealth of talented youngsters out there making music and we hope that this event will demonstrate that writing & singing in your indigenous language is a positive, worthwhile experience for young artistes.”

The three bands chosen to play at Nòs Òg are Fionnar from the Highlands of Scotland singing in Scots Gaelic, The Stilletoes from north Wales singing in Welsh and The Temporary from the west of Ireland singing in Irish Gaelic. Each act has written their own music and hope to impress the audience with their contemporary approach to writing songs in their own languages.

Fiona J. Mackenzie who has been developing the Scots Gaelic group Fionnar for the past few years says “the group are really looking forward to performing at Nòs Òg and meeting the other acts. If fits in well with a project we are currently working on called Sgoil Roc which encourages young singers to write their own new and contemporary Gaelic song.

”To augment the Nòs Òg and Nòs Ùr events, there will be a music industry panel discussion on the Saturday morning of the 20 June at Eden Court which will talk about the practicalities and possibilities for groups performing in their native tongue.

Brian Ó hEadhra concludes “We are encouraging students from schools, colleges and anyone interested in languages and new music to attend these exciting events. Last year's event was a great success and we anticipate this year to grow even bigger through both a local and live internet audience.”

Entry into Nòs Òg and the panel discussion is free of charge. Under 16's get free entry to Nòs Ùr; over 16's entry is £8.00. Tickets can be booked from Eden Court Box Office 01463 234234 or online at www.eden-court.co.uk
FeedBurner

Big Tent, Scotland’s Largest Eco Festival in Falkland

A Little Taste of Cuba at Scotland’s Largest Eco Festival!

The Creole Choir of Cuba are the latest in an impressive line up of world, folk and fusion musicians who will appear at this years Big Tent, Scotland’s Largest Eco Festival in Falkland on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July.

The 14 singers plus drummers & dancers who make up The Creole Choir of Cuba will present 'desendann, voices of Haiti' and open the Peter Gabriel inspired ‘WOMAD Festival’ at Charlton Park, Wiltshire before heading North to the picturesque village of Falkland and ‘The Big Hullabaloo’ Main Stage at Big Tent! An estimated 1 million Haitian immigrants have made their home in Cuba since the 18th Century and each wave brought with them the strong musical and dance traditions, their religion, customs, rituals and cultural habits on their journey from Haiti to Cuba. The Creole Choir of Cuba celebrates and preserves the rich legacy of Haitian culture and has gained national and now international recognition.

Exporting musical and dance traditions resonates with other Big Tent headliners of course including Shooglenifty who have been at the vanguard of the ‘Cool Celt’, ‘Acid Croft’, ‘Folk Rock’ phenomenon and who have stirred a genetic memory or two across the planet scattered Celtic Diaspora in an astonishing twenty-year plus career.

Michael Marra will also appear at Big Tent with the cream of Scottish classical talent, Mr McFalls Chamber. Acclaimed as one of Scotland's most talented and original songwriters, Michael has been in the music business since 1971 when he formed his first band with Dougie Maclean. He formed his own record company ‘Mink Records’ in 1985 and has combined singing and performing with his love of the theatre. Michael played the character ‘Old Shep’ in the BBC’s Hamish Macbeth and also took on the role of musical director for John Byrne’s award winning drama ‘Your Cheatin Heart’. As well as his solo act Michael has performed with his own bands, as a duo with poet Liz Lochhead and in collaboration with dancers, poets and musicians of all types, even touring Europe as support act for Deacon Blue.
Described as Scotland’s next big indie–rock band and fresh from recording the theme tune on the new series of Channel 5’s ‘Minder’, come Glasgow’s Attic Lights who are signed to the legendary Island Records. The five piece band have spent the year touring with best pals The Fratellis since recording their debut album ‘Friday Night Lights’.

Emerging from the vibrant melting-pot of Glasgow’s 21st-century folk scene, The Treacherous Orchestra take Scottish dance music into a thrilling new dimension. Comprising a baker’s dozen of Scotland’s finest young instrumentalists this truly turbocharged collective have incited merry mayhem at every one of their previously rare appearances, from remote Hebridean islands to the world-renowned Celtic Connections Festival.

The members of India Alba are classical musicians from both India and Scotland and their medley of Reels and Ragas combine sounds that reflect the broad common ground between their traditions. Irish traditional singer and flautist Nuala Kennedy performs a range of material from across the Irish and Scottish traditional music repertoires. She also composes her own idiosyncratic brand of traditional music and tours in a variety of line-ups from duo and quartet to a nine-piece festival band. Nuala grew up playing traditional music in an award-winning ceilidh band 'Ceoltoiri Oga Oghrialla'. She has performed with American hipster and indie-poet Will Oldham (Domino Records 2008), French guitarist Philippe Guidat, Scotland's Norman Blake from Teenage Fanclub and cutting-edge Canadian composer Oliver Schroer.

The Bevvy Sisters effortlessly mix the richly seasoned voices of Heather Macleod, Kaela Rowan and Lindsey Black, into a headily harmonised cocktail of jazz, Americana, folk and newly written material. A recent review opined “Some of the silkiest, sultriest, sauciest harmonies ever likely to caress your ears”.

The Moonzie Allstars hail from Cupar just up the road from Big Tent and combine North East Fiddle music with Salsa and bagpipes. Straddling the divide between sample based recording and virtuoso live performance are the Joe Acheson Quartet whose combination of heavy jazz-kit riffs, digital drums, programmed beats and percussion left one reviewer panting, “Quite like nothing else on the music scene or elsewhere, they really must be sampled to be believed”!

Big Tent won many accolades last year for delivering an event, which was fun, safe and family centered, indeed the Times Online voted Big Tent among Britain’s Best 10 Family Day Outs! The Chipolatas return to Falkland again this year with their mix of circus skills, music, theatre, dance, and underlining that Big Tent is packed with great activities and mouth-watering food as well as the brilliant music on the Big Hullabaloo Main Stage and inside The Wee Shindig Tent. Stand up Comedian Phil Kay also returns to compère proceedings with his own brand of craziness.

Last year The Guardian Online voted Big Tent among the UK’s top ten folk festivals an astonishing achievement for an event that is only in its fourth year! Dana Macleod, Music Producer at Big Tent thinks the quality of the musicians on display at this year’s Big Tent is further evidence of the events growing reputation and importance among the summer music schedule. “We have brought together a truly world class programme which features Folk, Classical, Jazz, as well as Electronic, Rock, Pop. Big Tent celebrates the astonishing quality, the dedication and creativity of our home produced talent and the dynamic fusion of cultures and natural connections that exist between musicians and the music of different countries”!

Big Tent is also one of the best value events around this summer with day tickets available for £12 and a full weekends camping and combined ticket a snip at only £40. Children under twelve are free. Music is said to be the language, the voice of unexpressed words. Well, we all have enough unarticulated angst and personal frustrations around at the moment, so maybe Big Tent may well be our oasis this summer!

25th & 26th July - Tickets and more info www.bigtentfestival.co.uk . It’s a different venue but we can expect the same intimate performance from one of Scotland's consummate entertainers. If you haven't been to a Michael Marra live performance, don't miss this!!!

This is a cabaret-style seated event.

29th July 2009 Wednesday ‘In Session’
MacGrogor, Brechin & O hEadhra

Three of the finest exponents of traditional music, individually hugely talented, together hugely entertaining. From different backgrounds, Bruce MacGregor (Blazing Fiddles), Sandy Brechin (Burach) and Brian O hEadhra (Anam), form a trio whose performance is as relaxed as any you're likely to enjoy anywhere.

Bruce MacGregor - fiddle
Sandy Brechin - accordion
Brian O hEadhra - guitar and vocals

This is a cabaret-style seated event.

30th July 2009 A Session with the Cachd

After the Opening Concert in the festival's main marquee has finished, internationally renowned, local super group Cachd-ach-Cruaidh will be playing into the early hours, bringing Speyfest 2009's time at the Institute to a close. With their unique blend of rock classics and Celtic anthems, The Cachd will play for as long as anyone wants to dance...so pace your-selves, it’s only Thursday!

Venue: Speyfest Tented Village

30th July 2009 Opening Concert
Dougie MacLean Band
Julie Fowlis

For the opening concert at Speyfest 2009 we bring together two of the finest and best known voices from the world of Scottish music. Singer/songwriter Dougie MacLean has an international reputation, taking his music throughout the world performing to sell-out crowds. Composer of the anthemic "Caledonia", Dougie was an obvious choice to lead this year's Homecoming Scotland initiative.
Julie Fowlis burst onto the music scene only a few years ago but has already collected numerous awards for her singing and won recognition as an Ambassador for the Gaelic language. Julie recently recorded a Gaelic version of the Beatles classic Blackbird as part of a MOJO commissioned compilation CD. She is a talented musician, playing small and highland pipes, whistles and button-key accordion.
Both bring their bands to Speyfest for what promises to be a very special night!

This is a seated event.

31st July 2009 Friday Concert
Session A9
Old Blind Dogs
Beoga

Friday's Concert features two of this countrys' "Super groups" and a young Irish band that has been described as trad. on anabolics!
The Session A9 line-up is stellar with bands like Capercaillie, Blazing Fiddles, The Peatbog Faeries and Fiddlers Bid all represented...to name just a few! But the sound and energy are very much Session A9. The craic ensures their live performances are always entertaining.
Old Blind Dogs have been at the cutting edge of the roots revival for a good number of years now and have an impressive back catalogue of critically acclaimed album releases to prove it. With influences from the north-east of Scotland to the rhythms of Africa and the Middle-east, the music has its base in tradition but, when given the OBD treatment, will always sound fresh.
Formed in 2002, Antrim based Beoga is ripping up the rulebook when it comes to the traditional music of Ireland. Three hugely successful albums released, with appearances at the BBC's Proms in the Park, Cambridge Folk Festival and Glasgow's Celtic Connections as well as regular tours of the USA and continental Europe, we're delighted to welcome them to Fochabers for their debut at Speyfest 2009.

This is a seated event.

31st July 2009 Homecoming Ceilidh

To celebrate Scotland's year of the Homecoming, we're planning a very special ceilidh to close out the Friday at Speyfest 2009. Fochabers Fiddlers, past and present are being tracked down to join a line-up of musicians to celebrate the near 30 years that the group has been playing. Add some guest performers, some well known dances and a caller to help the less experienced and you have the ingredients for a great night.

1st August 2009 Craft Fair

The Speyfest Craft Fair in the main marquee on the Saturday of the festival is now a firmly established and highly popular event in Scotland's craft fair calendar and this year more than 50 exhibitors will be displaying their wares. If you have never visited a craft fair before or even if you attend them regularly, there is bound to be something that will catch your eye amongst the huge variety of beautiful crafts and art work and some of the stalls may even encourage a bit of visitor participation. Amongst this years' exhibitors are artists, fabric makers, jewellery makers and leather craft workers. There will be sewn items of all descriptions, contemporary canvases and glass work. The list is endless.
All this plus the usual amenities on the Speyfest field including free entry to the Festival Club where visitors can get a taste of the music on offer over the weekend. Come along and have a great day out!

1st August 2009 Festival Night
Fochabers Fiddlers
Bodega
The Ploughboys
Shooglenifty
Mauvais Sort

Six hours of music, five great bands, with Scotland, Canada and Australia all represented....welcome to the Festival Night at Speyfest 2009.
The evening will get off to a rousing start with home-grown talent, The Fochabers Fiddlers. Led by Speyfest Chairman, James Alexander the band is a huge favourite with festival crowds.
Bodega formed in 2005 when the five members of the band attended the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music at Plockton. Winners of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards in 2006, they've gone on to perform at festivals across the country, winning fans for their upbeat sound and lively stage performances. Talented individuals with a big future in the music world!
One of the standouts from last year's festival, we're delighted to welcome back Melbourne based, The Ploughboys. The songs have their roots in the folklore of Australia but the stories are familiar. For those that missed last year, its Australian roots, Celtic flavoured rock delivered with a punch that's guaranteed to get the party started.

For years now Shooglenifty has been leader of the folk-fusion pack and remains one of the best live acts on the current Celtic scene. The musical influences are numerous and diverse but the fiddle, mandolin front-line is unmistakable. A Shooglenifty live show is always memorable and is sure to be one of the highlights of this year's festival.
This will be Mauvais Sort's third visit to Speyfest...but we think you just can't get enough of this particular good thing! The music is an eclectic mix of jazz, classical and folk influences brought to bear on the traditional tunes of Quebec. And it is played with a blazing energy that is well nigh impossible to resist.
The whole night is peppered with outstanding talent, in possibly one of the best line-ups we've ever put together.

This is a standing event.

2nd August 2009 Survivors Ceilidh

The festival reaches an exhausted climax with the music marathon that is the Survivors Ceilidh. Ten hours of music on two stages, music to listen to, music for dancing and as evening turns into night, things just get more lively!!
The line-up is a mix of local talent and main stage acts from earlier in the festival, coming together to bring the curtain down on another year at Speyfest. There's a relaxed atmosphere around the festival site and it’s a great day out for all the family.
On-site facilities include a well stocked beer tent and a number of concessions serving a good selection of food.

Tickets now on sale @ www.speyfest.com

FeedBurner

FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR CELTIC & SCOTS SONG COMPETITION

Ten finalists singing in various Celtic and Scots languages have been chosen by jury to perform at this year’s Nòs Ùr song competition in Inverness in June.

Nòs Ùr, meaning 'new style' in Gaelic, is a Celtic and Scots language competition which will see performers vying for the honour to perform at a grand European final - Liet International minority languages song competition in The Netherlands in October. First they must win the regional final being held on June 20th at Eden Court Theatre in Inverness, Scotland. Judging is done by experts and via public vote on the night and on the internet.

Event organiser Brian Ó hEadhra said: "The number and diversity of submissions was amazing. We received songs in Scottish Gaelic, Irish, Scots, Ulster Scots, Welsh, Cornish, and Breton.

“People often think that songs sung in these languages have to be folk or traditional in nature but this competition challenges this preconception. We have all styles of music in the final including rock, pop, rap and acoustic from singers and bands across the Celtic and Scots regions.“

I think anyone who comes along on the night will be blown away at the level of musicianship and professionalism of the bands. It certainly gives the Eurovision and the X Factor a run for their money!

“A new aspect of the competition, in this its second year, is that under 16’s get in to the event for free. This is to attract a young audience and hopefully encourage them to start writing in their native tongue, whether it be Gaelic, Scots or whatever.

Other related events on the day will include a conference on minority languages hosted by UHI Millennium Institute, and a number of music industry workshops for teenage bands singing in minority languages.

The event is being staged by goEvents which promotes and develops creative arts in the Highlands and Islands. It is supported by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), Highland Council, Colmcille, Scottish Arts Council, Bòrd na Gàidhlig and MG Alba.

The finalists for Nòs Ùr 2009 are:

Àdhamh MacLeòid.
