Because our half-lived love story is killing me

Burn like an inferno—like hell, I care. Loving you so passionately was anything but fair. It was reckless. Consuming. A kind of madness that curled into my skin and made a home there. I gave in to you, not softly, not gracefully, but like a storm crashing against cliffs, knowing I'd break myself in the process.

This thing between you and me—my words fall flat to define it. Are you the ocean and am I the shore? That sounds too poetic for something this violent, this unfinished. We’re so close we can hear each other's breathing across cities. And yet we never seem to stay in each other’s lives. It's maddening. There are days I crave you like oxygen. I want you in my life, in my bed, your breath on my neck, your hands claiming every inch of me. And then there are days I want to run. I want you to vanish so I don’t have to feel this unbearable pull.

And the worst part? Your love. It's quiet. Graceful. Mature. It grows even when I don’t water it. You love me without asking for anything in return. Without boundaries. Without expectations. You love me like no man ever has. Like no man can.

But the truth? I’m scared. Terrified. Of the parts of you, you keep hidden. I’ve seen shadows of them, just once. You weren’t the intelligent, calm, collected man I’ve known for two decades. You were sharp. Cold. Unrecognizable. The way you held my hand—possessive, forceful—it didn’t feel like you wanted me. It felt like you wanted to own me. A part of me hated it. A part of me... couldn’t look away. And in that confusion, I knew I had to walk away.

It was not easy. It tore me apart.

By then, you had given me everything the woman in me longed for—trust, love, respect, tenderness, brutal honesty, wild-soul-shaking sex, and a vision of a life that didn’t seem like a fantasy anymore. And then, just like that, it all evaporated. Evaporated like it had never existed. I was livid. I wanted the version of you I carried in my head to be real, to be permanent. But how could I expect that, when I’ve changed so much, so many times in the past five years? It was cruel of me to demand that you stay the same.

I remember every word you said that night. The only night you ever truly fought me. You were raw. You called me selfish. Said I failed you. That you needed me to hold you, and I pushed you away. That night was fire. That night was hell. We both burnt in it.

And I know—when I'll post this, when I'll let these words drift into the digital void—you'll read it. With your morning coffee, between your meetings, while lying in bed with that far-off look in your eyes. You'll scroll back to our old WhatsApp chat. You always do. And yet... you won’t call. You never f*cking call. You’ll let it sit in your chest like a weight. You’ll let it ache. And I’ll hate you for it.

But, please, prove me wrong. Pick up the phone. Say something. Anything. Please.

Are you and I done? I don’t know. I hope not. I pray not.

I seethe with anger. I ache with love. I burn with the hope that maybe—just maybe—you feel the same way too.

P.S. Don’t you dare wear that olive green T-shirt tonight. Not while reading this. Not while pretending you’re okay.

I wrote the following in September. Sometimes, I feel I will forget the art of writing couplets because I am not writing at all this year. I strongly believe you have to practice to hone your craft. And I am not doing that. Perhaps I schedule a time to write a poem. Or I need better time management skills.

I believe every few months I am a different person. Life has been teaching me some great lessons and I am readjusting my wings with a desire to soar high. Whether I will achieve my goals is a different story but chasing my goals without any fear has empowered me. It has made me a different person. I am becoming someone my younger self would have loved. Right now my 2 regrets are I don't have time for my book and I don't do that much creative writing. Writing, especially Hindi poetry, gives me immense joy.

God willing, this will change, like all the other things that have changed for the better in my life.

Eternally thankful to God, the universe and all the beautiful people I have met in my life.

I've watched you fall in love with another woman. I hugged you when you wallowed for your first girlfriend. I helped you select the perfect shirt for your first date. And I've endured the gut-wrenching pain of you choosing one woman after another while I've always been the one you come back to - not as a lover but as a friend. Then you have the audacity to call me your fallback plan. Fallback plan? Wh**e, f**k buddy or one-night stand command more respect in comparison. At least I'd be your first choice. Not a backup plan to a backup plan. So f**k you.

I don't know who I am angry at now - you or me? You have always taken me for granted. And I felt privileged even for that. You felt the right to wake up at 3 am after your girlfriend treated you like sh*t. And I felt obliged to comfort you. You had the guts to nitpick fault in every man who asked me out. And I felt you were protecting me. You selfish bast**d. You kept me as an option all this while. And look at me so blind in hope and love. I looked forward to your leftovers like a ho**y teenager. So f**k me.

I was a charity case, to begin with. I am on the verge of a breakdown now. It feels the world around me will collapse and I will survive only to witness my misery. My heart is so heavy with pain that I feel my chest will explode. I am all choked up with tears I hold back. I feel I am dragging the weight of my dead body. I'm dying slowly. I am rotting inside. I am seething in pain. Please make it right. Please. I beg you.

Who did this? The sensible woman in me knew you and I were a disaster from the very beginning. You needed a friend. You desired a lover. My foolishness was to think you will settle for both in one woman. And I will be that woman. I check all the boxes you are looking for - in a friend - in a lover. So why don't you hug me as a lover? Why do you pat my head as a friend? Why don't you move your fingers in my hair like a man? As a friend, I understand you. But as a lover, I am mad at you. The angry lover blames you. As a lover, I expect you to do the impossible for me - fall in love with me when you clearly can't.

So f**k love.

बाकी सब लगता है मुझे शोर

तुम्हें उम्र भर इश्क़ नहीं मिला

फ़र्ज़ निभाते-निभाते ज़िंदगी यूँही कट गई

हम दोनों का यही सिलसिला हैं

I had high hopes from February but I got COVID. It hit me really hard. I was in bed for almost 3 weeks. It was frustrating as I missed many deadlines.

I am hoping March will be better and I will be able to recover the time lost.

Music and I are in a relationship

Music is my 19-year-old boyfriend who picked me up from college and took me to a different restaurant every Saturday - and - tucked my hair behind my ear as I ate sizzler. Music is also the sauve man I dated who listened to my 5-year plan - feeding my soul and body with a penetrating stare and his to-die-for smile. Music is also the man who betrayed me and left me in the lurch - and - made me fall every time I tried to take a step forward.

Music is love, lust and betrayal all rolled into one.

I have lived more in the songs I have listened to than through the highs and lows of life. In the dead of winter last January, I missed my bus and had to wait for another bus for 40 minutes in -15 degrees celsius. I shivered in sub-zero weather. With anger seething in my body, warmth was given by Ed Sheeran's Beautiful People. I wondered was Ed was singing for me? Because I don't fit in this world. Because, at that time, I could definitely use some help. Perhaps a ride. Perhaps enough money in the bank to afford Uber. Ed helped me to survive that brutal evening in Toronto. Ed gave me company when I had no one. Ed gave me hope.

I have lost count of times I've lulled myself to sleep with Ranjish Hi Sahi by Ali Sethi. I don't know if the lyrics make my loneliness more pronounced or fill my empty life. I don't even know if I am waiting for someone. Or I want someone to come back. The only thing I know is if I ever fall in love, I want to feel pain like Ali sings. I want to wait for my lover. And I want him to come back and destroy me all over again. Love, in this song, has layers that transcend worldly expectations. Some days, I want something like that in my life too.

I was on a flight when I heard Treat You Better by Shawn Mendes for the first time. I cried so much that I felt the Alps over which I was flying would drown in my tears. It reminded me of the only man who treated me right and loved me despite all the wrongs in my life. But at that time, I wanted to do everything alone. The woman in me wanted to restore self-respect, not fall in the arms of a man. Even if he was the man who embraced the broken pieces of me and hurt himself in return. It was heartbreaking but I had to let him go. Letting him go became my only regret. I listen to this song very rarely now. But when I do, I think of the love I lost and the courage I gained. I also think of him.

Music gives me the taste of emotions which I craved in every relationship. It makes my life lonelier. It makes my regrets prominent. It makes my heart heavier with pain. Yet music remains by my side everyone else leaves.

No wonder, music and I are in a relationship.

I think writing poetry has taken a backseat for a while. I have re-written my book this year. Editing is still a challenging task, though. I started doing other things - I ventured into making reels and I did my free Webinar last Saturday. Both of these have been creatively satisfying. But still I want to write more Hindi couplets. The reason is if I am out of practice, it gets difficult to sum up emotions in 2 lines. God willing, in November I will write more.

Writing about romance – @VidushiBhardwaj - Try to write what you feel. Imagine the person is in front of you and then edit it.
Self-Thoughts - @NiteshKlair - Write it like a journal. Concentrate on feelings that are difficult. Make sure you pen those.
Where do you get inspiration from? - @KiranUmrao - Music
Romantic lines with little humour – @NeelamGupta - Think you are having a conversation with your partner and write your first 3 thoughts. It helps in getting the first draft.
How to end any couplet. It always starts off very good but end bad. @ShitalDave - Try to write 4-5 versions of a couplet. Then pick the best and edit it.
तवाइफ @VanshikaTiwari - If you want to write about it, I’d say watch a documentary and see why they are in that profession. Learn about their struggles and hardships. Then words will follow automatically.
I stopped writing in the lockdown and just couldn't do it again. I want to restart writing. - @BhavanaKuntal - You have to push yourself because no one else can. Start by writing a journal. Download Day One app. Start from there.
Poetry depicting everyday objects with the centre point of poetry. - @SahibKhandpur - Think of bringing magic to it. Watch the above webinar video and use same steps I told in example 1.
How to deal with blockages? - ChiragGoswami - Write often. Practice beats talent any day.
How to get beyond monotony n some cheesy lines - @PinalSawansukha - Write raw. Follow example 2 and 3 in the webinar video.
How to start writing - @AnuragSahrawat - By writing a journal.
Erotic poetry - @AnjaliDodhani - For this, write what comes to your mind. Then editing is always the king.

इत्तेफ़ाक़ से मिले थे हम

और शिद्दत से निभाया था हमने प्यार

कहाँ वो 90 के दशक की आशिक़ी

और कहाँ आजकल का हैशटेग-वैशटेग सा व्यापार

दिन गुज़ारे थे साथ हमने

बांधा था सपनों का संसार

कब सोचा था मैंने कि मैं रह जाऊँगी दिल्ली में

और तुम बस जाओगे सात समुंदर पार

सुना है वहाँ बर्फ गिरती है खूब

लोग वहाँ चाय कम कॉफ़ी ज़्यादा पीते हैं

और यहाँ चाय की हर एक चुस्की पे जनाब

कॉलेज के दिनों को हम लाखों बार जीते हैं

बहुत उधेड़ बून करती हूँ मैं

बहुत सोचती हूँ तुम्हारे बारे में

तुम काफ़ी आगे बढ़ गाये

और मैं रह गई किनारे पे

खनक आज भी है

तेरी मद्धम सी आवाज़ की ज़िंदा

मेरी बचकानी बातों पे

तुमने नहीं किया था मुझे कभी शर्मिंदा

रेत से थे तुम

तुम्हें मुट्ठी में बांध नहीं पाई

कहाँ सागर, कहाँ साहिल

और ये हज़ार मीलों की जुदाई

सुना है तुम दिसंबर में आ रहे हो

हर बार की तरह 4 हफ़्ते के लिए

तुम हमेशा लाते हो महंगे तोहफे

और मैंने तुम्हे सिर्फ ताने ही दिए

क्या कोई नाम है इस रिश्ते का

क्या कोई हक़ है मेरा तुम पर

कभी सिसक सी उठती है दिल पे तुम्हारे

मेरा ज़िक्र सुन कर

हर बार की तरह इस बार भी मिलना वही

जिस मोड़ पे आख़िरी बार लिया था मेरा नाम

रास्ते भला जुदा हो हमारे

तुम ही हो मेरी मंज़िल, तुम ही मेरा मक़ाम

I have not been very productive for a month now. But I am having a good time with my nephew. It's fun and insightful to watch a baby grow. There is so much adults can learn from them.

I wrote only 2 couplets in August.

फ़ुर्सत में मिलना मुझसे

यूँ दो चार घंटे के लिए नहीं

सिर्फ़ हाल चाल नहीं पूछना

बातें करनी है तुमसे कई

देखना है तुम्हें एक टक

शिकवे करने है तुमसे कई हज़ार

जब नाराज़ हुए थे तुम मुझसे

और जब छेड़ा था मुझे बीच बाज़ार

चवन्नी-अठन्नी सा ढोंग मत करना

मान लेना मेरे हर कहे को

सुबकियाँ से काम मत चलाना

बेहने देना ग़र आँसू बेहे तो

सख़्त होने का दिखावा छोड़ आना

नुक्कड़ वाले बनिये की दुकान पे

सिद्दत से एक बार बोल देना

कि गलती होती है इंसान से

तुम मुझे छोड़ गए

उसका तुम्हें कभी अफ़सोस हुआ है क्या

मैं नहीं तुमसे पूछूँगी

कि मेरे बाद मेरी तरह किसी को छुआ है क्या

ना मैं इस युग की मीरा हूँ

ना हो तुम मेरे घनश्याम

बस इश्क़ है तुमसे बेपन्नह मुझे

बाक़ी सब कुछ है मुझमें आम

तुम भी सोचते होगे ना

यह तीली सा इश्क़, ज्वालामुखी कब हुआ

यूँ समझ लो तुम्हारे जाने के बाद

तुम्हारे ख़याल ने दिन में 100 बार मुझे छुआ

अब गणित में तो तुम अव्वल हो

हिसाब लगा ही लोगे

पर सोच के आना जनाब

पिछले 15 सालों का हिसाब कैसे दोगे

तो आना बस फ़ुरसत में

यूँ दो चार घंटे के लिए नहीं

सिर्फ़ हाल चाल नहीं पूछना

बातें करनी है तुमसे कई
