What we are doing

Music Inspired Art is organizing shows with the best museum quality music photography and art inspired by music.

The Music Inspired Art gallery and work space in Schiedam, the Netherlands, is open on Thursday and Fridays from 11 AM till 5 PM, on appointment and during special sessions with lectures and concerts. Friends of Music Inspired Art are invited by an online news letter. To subscribe write an email to musicinspiredart@gmail.com.

Music Inspired Art can be commissioned to
- curate exhibitions
- search and develop archives
- search photographs for documentary films (like we did for the Netflix documentary Quincy)
- hold key notes
all related to music inspired art and photography.

In the Music Inspired Art premises (De Fotowerkplaats Schiedam) there are also printing facilities for professional and top amateur photographers. Other services include photo shoots, trainings and image editing.

The North Sea Jazz Archives exposed at this year's festival

In co-operation with the North Sea Jazz Festival Music Inspired Art will present a selection of the best festival's photos under the title The North Sea Jazz Archives. These extraordinary, and sometimes historic, images are selected by master photographers Vincent Mentzel, Hans van Ommeren, Henk Bothof, and MIA director Wim van Zon.
50 photos will be printed for the exhibition at the North Sea Jazz Festival 2017, another 200 will be screened. All images are for sale in limited editions and signed by the photographers.

The best festival photos are shot by Paul Bergen, Peter van Breukelen, John Gundlach, Jelmer de Haas, Dimitri Hakke, Vincent Mentzel, Joke Schot, Richard Sinte Maartensdijk, Raphael Sprenger, Andreas Terlaak. Some more will be added in the near future.

Music Photography at Schiedam Photo Festival

Music Inspired Art supported several items at the Schiedam Photo Festival 2016 that was held October 13 -16.

In co-operation with us Karen van Gilst made a new Streetnote for her series in Schiedam during a public photo serssion.

Wim van Zon presented the history of music photography in a lecture and we curated an exhibition with music photos by Jimmy Katz and Ouxu Cheng at the trendy wine bar Wijning.

The central point of the festival, the Havenkerk (Harbour Church) in the center of Schiedam, was dressed by the Music Inspired Art crew.

A pop-up Jazz Museum for Rotterdam?

Music Inspired Art initiated the plan for a pop-up Jazz Museum in Rotterdam in 2015. To celebrate 10 years North Sea Jazz Festival in the city, including the organization of the festival's art show for the tenth time, MIA is looking for opportunities to celebrate this jubilee with an international jazz art exhibition on a very special location. On Facebook we created a special page informing Dutch fans about the preparations. On December 15th we will know if Jazz Museum Rotterdam will be a great tourist attraction. The Kitchen's Cookin'

Connecting the big five-days exhibition at the yearly North Sea Jazz Festival to smaller art shows as a part of the North Sea Round Town festival in Rotterdam has resulted in a few hot new events for both music and art lovers.

This year we will host an exhibition at the five star Manhattan Hotel Rotterdam with the paintings of jazz junkie Bo Woody Winter and photos by Jimmy Katz, the best contemporary jazz photographer in the world. On June 26th the show at the Manhattan will be opened during the monthly Wine Club of the hotel.

Bo Woody Winter will also exhibit at The Kitchen, the bar and restaurant of The Student Hotel, due to his last years' contacts with the management of the restaurant. We added an exhibition an exhibition of the Italian jazz photographs by Joke Schot and Rosaria Macri (Schot & Roos) and delivered a steaming program of jazz artists to perform during the exhibitions. You can expect the top of the Dutch jazz scene in The kitchen so we don't exaggerate saying The Kitchen will be cookin'.

The Kitchen's program will be a jewel in the crown of North Sea Round Town this year. Especially for the opening of the show on June 28th Music Inspired Art organized a boat trip to Bo Woody Winter's studio, two exhibitions in the city and the opening of the exhibition at The Kitchen. Trip, including a guide, drinks, jazz dinner, DJ at the opening and a concert by the Reinier Baas Trio (Edison Winner 2013) will only cost 99 euros (reservations till June 15th: marc@marcorganiseert.nl). Both the Manhattan Hotel and The Student Hotel will accomodate artists that will be performing at North Sea Jazz. Big chance to meet an artist there when visiting the exhibitions. We hope that some of the artists will join the jam sessions at The Kitchen during the festival nights. The Kitchen will be open then till 4 AM while trumpet player Michael Varekamp will host jam sessions.

The floating H2otel will show the photographs of local Richard Sinte Maartensdijk who has been shooting at the North Sea Jazz Festival for several years.

Co-operation between the venues, the programmers at North Sea Round Town, and Music Inspired Art result in a program that enhanced the quality of the festival that heats up Rotterdam for the North Sea Jazz Festival. 35 Unique Jimmy Katz Prints for Collectors

Herman Leonard once called Jimmy Katz 'the best working photographer on earth. And if you look at the photos in the book Jazz Katz or 70 Years Blue Note Photography you will immediately agree with the late Herman Leonard. Not only do Katz's photographs of jazz belong to the best music photos ever made, you might even say he's one of the best portrait photographers in the world.

In July and August 2014 Music Inspired Art will host an exhibition of Jimmy Katz jazz photos in the old castle of Woerden in the Netherlands. It's a spin-off of the yearly North Sea Jazz Festival Art Show. With the help of Epson and the Hans van Ommeren Foundation 35 of the best jazz portraits will be printed on the best archieval paper, using the best Epson inks, and on a size that has not been used for Jimmy's photos. These prints will come in an edition of just one and will be signed by the photographer.

This will result in an unique exhibition with an opportunity for photo collectors around the globe. The prints will be for sale at a special prices ranging from 900 to 2,900 euros. It gives collectors a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire edition 1 prints, printed to the highest standards by master printer Hans van Ommeren.

Jimmy Katz will be present at the opening of the show on July 5 in Woerden. Ruud Visschedijk, director of the Dutch Photo Museum in Rotterdam will open the exhibition. The exhibition will run till September 15th.

Welcome to the Music Inspired Art website.

Music Inspired Art (MIA), a brand name of Van Zon CC, organizes national and international music inspired art events and exhibitions. MIA is best known for its North Sea Jazz Festival exhibitions. From 2004 till 2017 MIA organizesd an extended art show during this largest indoor music festival in the world. Known music photographers like Baron Wolman, Jim Marshall, Dick Waterman and Jimmy Katz exhibited their work in Rotterdam besides dozens of international painters and sculptors. Also rock, jazz and blues exhibitions in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp (Belgium), Madrid (Spain) Hong Kong and many Dutch cities attracted thousands of people. In 2009 MIA organized the first International Music Photography Festival (IMPF) in the city of Schiedam, The Netherlands. In 2015 MIA hosted the pop-up Jazz Museum Rotterdam that attracted over 3,000 jazz aficionados during the North Sea Jazz period. In 2019 MIA organized a music photo festival in the city of Delft (NL) with lectures, film screenings and concerts.

MIA is eager to curate music inspired art shows, lectures and live painting sessions with exceptional musicians in all European countries.

Since 2006 MIA organizes the yearly North Sea Jazz Art Show at the festival of the same name. The art show is organized since the festival took off in the seventies of last century. The show is known for its high quality. Exhibiting artists include Jim Marshall, Easton Davy, Baron Wolman, Sam Middleton, Paul Bergen, Rob Verhorst, Ed van der Elsken, Tjarko ten Have and Dick Waterman.

IMPF 2009

In the summer of 2009 MIA organized the first International Music Photography Festival in the city of Schiedam, The Netherlands. 5 galleries, the Municipal Museum and one church were the exhibition locations that were connected by a string of windows of shops an houses filled with the best rock, blues, jazz and classical music photographs. In the galleries special exhibitions of Elliott Landy, Gerald Cyrus, Panny Mayfield and Bill Wyman were presented. Concerts of the Jazz Invaders, the Rosenberg Trio, John Watts (Fisher Z) and Arjen Leistra (church organ) attracted even more visitors and raised this festival to an international phenomenon.

Tijdens de officiële opening van de traditionele North Sea Jazz Festival art show op woensdag 9 juli 2008, werd in Ahoy Rotterdam het prestigieuze fotoboek Happy Man, Benjamin Herman gepresenteerd. Fotograaf Peter van Breukelen volgde een jaar de bedrijvige altsaxofonist Benjamin Herman op de voet en werd eerder dit jaar beloond met de Zilveren Camera in de categorie Kunst, Cultuur & Entertainment/serie. Hiermee treedt hij in de voetsporen van zijn gelijknamige vader, die in 1951 eveneens de prijs won en medeoprichter was van de Zilveren Camera en de World Press Photo. Jazzgoeroe Jules Deelder schreef de tekst voor het boek. 'Happy Man' is inmiddels een collector's item maar nog verkrijgbaar via MIA voor de speciale prijs van 25 euro exclusief verzendkosten (winkelprijs 39,90).
