Fabulous new releases by Queensland artists this summer

Colloquially coined The Sunshine State (hey, it’s even on some of our number plates…), Queensland is renowned for tropical weather, and with summer on our doorstep, this fine state of ours is more than ready for a carefree season of fun. It wouldn’t be summer without tremendous tunes though, and that’s where the talented local artists who call Queensland home come in. Whether you’re at the beach, taking a road trip or holed up inside with the air conditioner on, it’s time to soak up these golden new releases by The Sunshine State’s own like a frilly neck lizard basking in the glorious summer sun.

‘FIREFLY’ – ELLA FENCE

The brilliant display of fireflies Ella Fence unexpectedly witnessed while taking a break at a creek in Queensland’s picturesque Scenic Rim served as the inspiration for her reflective new single, Firefly. Captivated by the majesty of the scene, the Gold Coast alt-rocker picked up her guitar and started composing the song’s vocal melody. A sublime musical journey whirling with hypnotic vocals, Firefly is a downbeat and slow-tempo trip that feels like a Zen tablet for the mind. Together with her American producer Scott Campbell (known for working with pop-rockers Katy Perry, Alanis Morissette and Stevie Nicks), they incorporated synth, keys, drums, bass guitar, and a dash of dreaminess, transforming the song into an incredibly mellow beauty that captures the peace of being at one with nature in solitude.

‘TURQUOISE LOVE’ – MARDI WILSON

Mardi Wilson’s final single of 2022, Turquoise Love, is a delectable slow burn that invites listeners to put their doubts about love to rest and embrace the freedom that comes with deep connection. Produced by Garrett Kato and mixed by Paul Blakey, Turquoise Love is based on the Brisbane native’s personal experiences, carrying on her tradition of telling frank and enlightening stories. Acknowledging that joy exists in both the single lane and coupledom, Mardi says the highs and lows of the latter have been some of the most terrifying yet beautiful adventures of her life. A sweet ode to significant others and the surprises and growth that loving them can bring, Turquoise Love reminds us that we can never have too much love in our lives. ‘WHAT PLANET DO YOU COME FROM’ – BABAGANOUJ

Brisbane indie-rockers Babaganouj return with What Planet Do You Come From, the lead single from their long-awaited debut album Jumbo Pets (slated for release early 2023). A flawless fusion of etheric dream-pop and exuberant indie rock, What Planet Do You Come From is a triumphant comeback teeming with softly simmering instrumentation, detached vocals and subtle harmonies that explode into a vibrant chorus atop fierce riffs and irresistible hooks. Forming in 2011, the band generated a lot of attention in the Australian scene before they went on hiatus. From their new release it’s easy to see that their time away working on their respective individual projects has only strengthened their prowess as a quartet. Babaganouj are bringing their classic flavour to a new era, and fans – old and new – will be lapping this one up like a Pina Colada on a hot summer’s day.

‘I’M AT A LOSS’ – ALTA FALLS

Brisbane duo Alta Falls’ new single I’m At A Loss is an upbeat electro-pop number that tangoes with the grips of uncertainty. It’s a shimmering, energetic tune that comes in waves, rising and crashing just so, sonically capturing the overpowering sense of being lost in the unknown yet breathing in the present and hoping for the best. Lead vocalist Nathanael says the inspiration for the lyrics came from the band’s fans. He asked them what “I’m at a loss” meant to them and used their answers to write the lyrics. Produced by Aidan Hogg and engineer Jordan Bain this latest offering from Alta Falls builds up to their second EP which is set to feature their signature synth charm, insightful prose, and danceable beats. A glittering array of pop rock poise, this sonic jewel has mainstream appeal.

‘GOODBYE GOODBYE GOODBYE’ – LUUNG

LUUNG is capping off the year strong with his atmospheric ballad Goodbye Goodbye Goodbye. The artist’s combination of minimalist pop and folk, along with his characteristic falsetto, creates an entrancing and immersive aural world. Influenced by figures like LANY and Andrew Belle, the choruses expand into a wall of sumptuous guitar and a looping percussion pattern while the verses are contained and intimate, mirroring a melancholy recurrent phrase. Glistening in reverb, the lyrics depict the tug-of-war that occurs when two individuals yearn for one another. Like a massage for your brainwaves and heartbeat, Goodbye Goodbye Goodbye evokes shivers down your spine of the good kind.

‘BLOOM’ – PEACH FUR

On sun-soaked single Bloom, Gold Coast rockers Peach Fur deliver a different kind of goodness. Lifted from their forthcoming album Earth Radio, Bloom was composed in one week and features Saint Lane along with Caleb McNab on keyboard. It’s the group’s first rap tune, providing a preview of the eclectic genres and ideas that will be featured on their next record. Lyrically the track speaks to the liberation that comes after splitting up with a romantic partner and finding a fresh sense of self. Known for their catchy tunes and electrifying live performances, Peach Fur’s latest instalment oozes flair.

‘SHE MET MY EYES’ – EIMHIN

Strap in for an emotive experience on Gold Coast troubadour Eimhin’s delicately quaint new single She Met My Eyes. In the tradition of legends like Virgin Prunes, David Bowie, and Harry Styles, Eimhin questions the status quo, celebrating his divine femininity through gender-nonconforming attire and raw lyricism. Building on the foundations of previous single Lately, Eimhin’s latest track moves through tender and regretful moments before ending with an unsettling scenario of lovers frantically attempting to keep their relationship from ending. She Met My Eyes poignantly unpacks the experience of trying to save a failing relationship where both parties just end up appeasing each other rather than facing the reality that they no longer have a future together. Lush instrumentation and harrowing vocal lines are sure to tug at your heart strings on this indie-folk rock musing.

‘COFFEE (STRIPPED BACK VERSION)’ – KOOLZ

Just like a cup of caffeine has the dual capacity to pacify a dwindling mood or lift a euphoric one to new heights, KOOLZ’s pared-back version of her previously released single Coffee, gloriously offers a distinct experience from the earlier version. Transposing the sprightly disposition of the somewhat indie-pop flavoured original track into an RnB-tinged slow burn, the latter invokes the overall theme of self-reflection through a more introspective lens, providing listeners with a comforting space to unpack whatever thoughts come up for them. Layering dense strings and delay-doused chords give the song a more atmospheric feel, making the alternative version of Coffee a softer Yin to the original’s perky Yang. Pop your coffee machine on, put your headphones in and enjoy this one with a steaming cup of joe when in need of a quiet piece of escapism.

‘THE PORTAL’ – THE COMFORT FEAT. DYLAN DAVIDSON

Worried about the state of the world? So are Brisbane rockers The Comfort. On their latest single The Portal, the band let loose with the fierce vocals of Deadlights’ Dylan Davidson and a tsunami of existential fury that simultaneously ponders the meaning of life while accepting its insignificance. The final sample of their new album Experience Everything. Live And Die, the band’s new track sonically manages to mimic the very internal conflict it explores, making for an enthralling listening experience that picks you up and makes you question everything before hurtling you back to a sobering reality that can no longer be ignored. A potent force, give The Portal your full attention and it could open doors to new thoughts where there were once only walls.

‘A GRADER’ – LOUNGE

A soft spot for early 2000s guitar punk pop ala Blink 182 meets a Montagues-versus-Capulets state of mind on Lounge’s infectious new single A Grader. These Brisbane newcomers have wasted no time with A Grader coming in as their fourth single since their inception in early 2021. It’s a buoyant number that delves into the seemingly destructive habit young people (and often society in general) have of dividing themselves into polarising cliques – the cliched “cool kids” versus the “losers.” One enamoured with feeding their vanity through superficial validation and the other besotted by their outsider status. Mellow verses that segue into a catchy sing-along chorus, driving drums and the saccharine vocals of front man Oskar Campbell combine into a power anthem that encapsulates the futility and exuberance of youth. In the best way possible this one deserves a spin on the DJ’s turntable at the next high school disco.

‘AGAINST YOUR OWN KIND’ – MUULES

Alt-rock lords Muules serve up an opulent portion of post-grunge fervour in their latest single, Against Your Own Kind. Featuring effects-drenched bass, big drums, and Nathan Vasey’s impassioned vocal delivery the track generates a tension-fuelled soundscape to reflect a neurodivergent individuals’ perspective of self-worth in relationships. On Against Your Own Kind, Royal Blood, Soundgarden, and early Incubus are key influences, creating a riff-heavy and melodic excursion. Bassist Rhys Fox produced the track alongside Ty Bain on mixing and Paul Blakey on mastering duties. A peek at the band’s long-awaited debut album, Against Your Own Kind is a bold, angst-ridden, and frenetic piece that is easy to keep on repeat.

‘HELP ME OUT’ – KAYPO

Charismatically mesmerising, Brisbane’s Kaypo warms the senses with his new acoustic guitar driven gem Help Me Out. Glistening with honeyed vocals and lush composition that evolves over the course of the song, Help Me Out is a heartfelt plea of seeking a lover who can see beyond, and is accepting of, our flaws. Kaypo’s piece is unique yet accessible, blending melodic sensibility with lyrical intuition, matching his personal accounts of heartbreak and the human condition with smooth guitar work. More magic is added to the track by renowned producer Stuart Stuart (The Veronicas, Sheppard), giving it a delectable pop panache that elevates it to earworm status.

Sunny Coast rockers chAMBER LANe take whiffs of nostalgia and a grass-is-greener attitude on their rollicking new tune Familiar Faces. A coming-of-age anthem, Familiar Faces sees the band on the precipice between teendom and adulthood, realising that now is the time to get out, enjoy life and make memories that will eventually become their “good ol’ days.” It’s the age-old enigma of wanting to relive past while knowing you should plant your feet firmly in the here and now. Pulsing drums, driving guitars and electric vocals from front man Connor makes for a seismic journey that’ll have you embracing the ebb and flow of life.

‘PARANOID’ – DZ DEATHRAYS

Queensland royalty DZ Deathrays have gifted us all a banger in new single Paranoid, a fast-paced anthem with syncopated rhythms, buzzing feedback, and a fierce chorus. DZ’s sound pervades the song, with strong double and triple-octave riff instrumentals echoing the lyrics: “Oi, oi, ya paranoid, hanging at the back waiting to get destroyed.” The tune has allusions to traditional Aussie rock, such as percussive built-up entrances, howling vocals, and pounding repetition, proving DZ Deathrays’ enduring ability to create carnage-inducing riffage. A gentle throb of instrumentation provides a soft and spectacular backdrop for this glowing ballad that traverses broken hearts and moving on from the things you cling to from past relationships. With a punchy chorus that will get stuck in your head with lines like “empty my pockets, empty my mind,” Pockets is a rich tapestry; a piece of ear candy to spin again and again.

‘STALLIN’ ‘ – BETTY TAYLOR

Centred on the heady feeling of falling for someone while being unsure if you can let your guard down, Sunshine Coast duo Betty Taylor’s debut single Stallin’ is an alluring ray of indie-pop sunshine. The project of Sophie Patrick and Kayla Smart, Betty Taylor meld catchy hooks and melancholic guitar grooves with a pulsating dance rhythm, waves of synths and sincere lyrics to create a track that is relatable, effervescent, and charming. Airy vocals from both women weave together into seamlessly stunning harmonies that hit the musical sweet spot. Produced by Aidan Hogg and mixed by Sean Cook (who has worked with the likes of Kimbra), Stallin’ is a robust debut that showcases the duo’s musicality, further complemented by first class production. ‘COMING HOME’ – LEWIS MCKEE

Uplifting. Wholesome. Emotive. Lewis McKee has penned the best kind of tune for the holiday season in Coming Home (and no, it’s not a Christmas carol!). Melding country rock, blues and acoustic pop, Coming Home is a stirring number about the elation one feels returning to their hometown. With the initial draft written some years ago, the final version of Coming Home was shaped through live acoustic performances. Produced by Albatross Media in Bundaberg, the song captures and evokes nostalgia, awe, and affectionate memories. So, if you’re heading home for the holiday season (or at any time), this is the track to blast as you careen down the highway or fly through the skies. As Dorothy would say, there’s no place like home, and Lewis McKee’s new single sums up that sentiment flawlessly.

‘ENOUGH IS ENOUGH’ – HARRY J HART

“Thoughts and prayers they just don’t cut, tell me when is enough?” It’s a sobering line for a solemn situation on Harry J Hart’s touching new release Enough Is Enough. Taking aim at gun violence and the laws that have not been altered to minimise the occurrence of such horrific acts, Enough Is Enough is a heart wrenching listen. The devastation and destruction of the 2018 Parkland shooting in America moved the young Gold Coast artist to pen the track with his vulnerable but stern vocals echoing the plight of many. It’s a message that needs to be heard and Harry J Hart delivers it with strength, integrity, and compassion.

‘HONEST’ – CHEAP DATE

To commit or not to commit? That is the question plaguing Brisbane outfit Cheap Date on their thrilling and infectiously catchy new single Honest. Blending elements of 90s pop rock with indie flair, Honest lyrically teeters between falling for someone romantically, yet not feeling as connected to that person as you feel you could be. A hazy melodic soundscape mirrors this sense of confusion, as vocalist Lara concludes optimistically that ‘I could tell you that I love you but it just wouldn’t be, honest.” If 90s rocker Courtney Love collaborated with noughties idol Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ frontwoman Karen O, Honest would be the blissful result.

‘GLAMOUR’ – BLUSSH

Glamour, the first track from Brisbane trio BLUSSH’s forthcoming EP of the same name, has a tremendous 90s grunge-punk charm. Thick heavy guitars, frenetic vocals, throbbing bass lines, and pounding drums that push and tug combine to convey the brutal ache of desire that the notion of “glamour” often traps us in. Lyrically, the song is both an observation and a warning – that in the appearance of beauty, disaster lurks. For in the need to be seen as glamorous – that is, to have it all – we can unwittingly become enslaved to unhealthy infatuation. Glamour is a rousing anthem fans of acts like HOLE will appreciate.

‘BEST FRIEND’ – STRAIGHT GIRLS

Known for exploring themes of lust, love and heartbreak in charming pop prose, Straight Girls’ (the solo project of Rhian Cruice) latest track Best Friend has us swooning as she plumbs the depths of those bliss filled days of having a crush on someone new. An intoxicating tale of falling in lust with a friend of a friend who reciprocates your experience, Best Friend reels listeners in with stream-of-consciousness-like lyrics that leave you feeling like you’ve spent time in the artist’s head riding the waves of giddying emotions. Featuring echoing electric guitar passages, a flurry of percussion and emotive bridges that build to a powerful climax, Psycho showcases the North Queenslander’s impressive artistic range and glorious vocal chops. A turning point in her professional and personal life, Psycho sees Matilda step into her power as she realises some individuals are not worth expending energy on. A wondrous melting pot of folk storytelling, indie-pop soundscapes and a rock attitude, Psycho is an absolute delight.

‘THINK ABOUT US’ – SAINT BARAE & RENE LE FEUVRE

Think About Us is a collaboration between two of the Gold Coast’s brightest up-and-comers (who also happen to be housemates), Saint Barae and Rene Le Feuvre. Straddling the line between soul-baring ballad and a slow-burning dance floor groove, Think About Us reflects on the experience of showing up for someone who is struggling with their mental health. Rene’s trademark electric guitar riffs paired with Saint Barae’s penchant for glittering synth hooks make for an 80s-inspired release fans of musicians like The Weeknd will adore.

‘ECONOMISING ON CABS’ – SWEATER CURSE
(INDIE-ROCK)

It’s a bittersweet moment in sweater curse camp, as the trio simultaneously releases their infectious indie-rock ditty Economising On Cabs and announce they’re calling it a day, with their farewell show set for 18 June. Written at a low point, guitarist Chris Langenberg says Economising On Cabs is about the self-inflicted pain of holding onto a relationship that isn’t working anymore. The track, which was recorded in 2021, captures the band at their roaring best. It begins with a typical sweater curse guitar screech, and is a reminder of how expansive the band’s sound is. Inspired by the netball call “here if you need me” (which signals to a player you can take the ball if they need to pass), Mardi’s new track honours authentic friendships, celebrating those individuals you can turn to during the highs and lows of life. Swapping her folk sensibilities for synths and addictive pop beats, Here If You Need is a delectable first taste of Mardi’s sophomore album and an earworm you’ll want to play on repeat.

Raw. Reflective. Melancholic. Ella Fence strikes a collective chord on stunning new single The Child. Golden Day As Gold Coast Music Awards Announce 2021 Winners

Following a tumultuous 18 months of living in a covid-19 fog, the Gold Coast Music Awards (GCMAs) bringing together 500 musicians, music industry personnel and fans to celebrate the achievements of the local music community at Gold Coast’s Home Of The Arts (HOTA) theatre on Saturday 4 September, was a remarkable and much needed ray of hope for many.

Musician Of The Year Scott French put it perfectly when, as the first award recipient of the day, he stated in his acceptance speech that the awards weren’t about winning, but “being together as a community,” – a sentiment that sums up the ethos of the GCMAs and the Gold Coast music scene.

“We’re still overwhelmed that the Awards actually happened. It was devastating when our presenting partner, SPRINGTIME Festival, had to postpone, but to have 500 musicians and music lovers in the room was magic,” said GCMA director, Chloe Popa.

“With incredible performances by Beckah Amani, Karl S. Williams, DENNIS., Massy Sky Raid and daste, we feel like today summed up what we know and love about this city: unwavering support, a rich arts scene, musical hits and a touch of glitz.”

At the top of the tally board with two Skull Murphy trophies, was first time nominee Beckah Amani, whose smooth vocals and honest conversation about racism in Triple J endorsed single, Standards, earned her Song Of The Year, while the track’s clip also took out Video Of The Year.

“Standards is my most vulnerable work. Turning this reflective poem into a song and releasing it was both liberating and important for me and my people, and the recognition today is super encouraging as an emerging artist,” said Amani.

Australian/Fijian hip hop artist, Jesswar, won the impressive Breakout Artist Of The Year nod after a busy year of releases and tours; while ARIA chart topping country music star, Casey Barnes, took out the top gong, defending his Artist Of The Year title despite impressive competition from the city’s many international exports.

“The last two years have been pretty tough but we’ve also worked harder than ever as a team, so it’s nice to have that recognised and to get together as an industry and celebrate. Amy, I’m coming for you!” Barnes joked, referring to Amy Shark’s Hall Of Fame status after her three consecutive Artist Of The Year wins.

Psychedelic surf-rockers, Peach Fur, were crowed Live Act Of The Year while transcendent and soulful blues record, Lifeblood, by Karl S. Williams took out Release Of The Year, with cool community hub, Mo’s Desert Clubhouse dubbed Venue Of The Year.

Decided by popular vote, the People’s Choice Award saw Euca win a stunning hand sculpted trophy by artist, Clayton Blake; while the career-defining Gold Coast Music Prize went to alt-rock band, Selve, providing 12-months of performance, media, and mentorship opportunities.

An uplifting celebration that doubled as a beacon of light for the future of local music, the GCMAs 2021 was a Golden Day all round.

Leading the charge is the local music scene, known for spawning international superstars like Sophie Monk and Amy Shark as well as being home to popular festivals and a slew of rising musical talents. At the forefront at this bustling community, is the Gold Coast Music Awards (GCMAs), which brings together and celebrates the achievements of local artists each year.

In honour of the seventh GCMAs, which takes place on Saturday, 4 September, we’re taking our hats off and giving a shout out to some of the city’s finest rising stars.

Meet the finalists of the GCMAs Artist Of The Year category, who are already making global waves…

CASEY BARNES

Australian country rock artist, Casey Barnes, is building up quite a reputation in the country music scene. The ARIA nominee and two-time Golden Guitar finalist has had an impressive two years, with his two albums debuting at #1 on the iTunes Country Album Chart, regular spins on country and commercial radio throughout Australia, new deals with Aussie music royalty, Michael Chugg, for management and a label deal with Chugg Music. With a huge Australian tour recently cancelled due to the pandemic, Barnes’ live show is an impressive spectacle, seeing him previously support Bryan Adams, Mariah Carey, Luke Bryan and Lady Antebellum. With more than seven million streams and a string of wins, including ‘Most Popular Male Artist, Album and Single’ in the Independent Country Music Australia, Artist Of The Year in the Gold Coast Music Awards, and becoming a finalist in the 2019 APRA Professional Development Awards, Barnes is firmly placed alongside some of Australia’s top artists.

ELIZA AND THE DELUSIONALS

Fresh off the back of releasing their addictive single You and making their return to live stages with The Vanns, Eliza & The Delusionals return with more new music to satiate fans and newcomers alike. The band’s latest single, Save Me, comes wrapped up in the brand of ‘90s and early ‘00s nostalgia they have endeared themselves to audiences with, bringing it to life with esteemed songwriters and producers, Keith Harris (Black Eyed Peas, Madonna), Kon Kersting (Tones And I) and Leon Zervos (Troye Sivan, Holy Holy). 2020 brought Eliza & The Delusionals huge success, with the release of both Sentimental and breakthrough juggernaut Just Exist bringing the band to international acclaim. With Just Exist, the group broke into the North American market, touring with Silversun Pickups and racking up successes on US radio; reaching #47 on the Alternative Radio charts, #1 on the SiriusXM Alt Nation chart and accumulating nearly 5 million streams worldwide.

HOLLOW COVES

Affirmed by nearly 200 million total streams for their 2017 debut EP Wanderlust, Hollow Coves have gained a cult following for their eloquent, engaging and entrancing take on indie-folk. After forming in 2014, the Gold Coast duo – Ryan Henderson and Matt Carins – released their several EP’s, before leaving their day-jobs to tour internationally in USA, UK And Europe, launching their debut album Moments in 2020. Evoking comparisons to everyone from Simon & Garfunkel to Ben Howard, Angus and Julia Stone, and even Coldplay, Hollow Coves have quietly emerged as a phenomenon. The two singles, Coastline and Home, surpassed 30 million streams each on Spotify, and their song The Woods, both the original and acoustic versions, collectively gathered over 40 million streams.

JESSWAR

A proud Fijian woman, Jesswar’s ruthless refusal of prescribed definitions is the foundation on which she builds her universe. Deeply inspired by her chosen community and her experiences she uses music as the vessel to tell her story. Her pride reflects on her resilience and resourcefulness and defends the notions of holistic interdependency and kinship. Receiving praise from heavyweights such as Ebro Darden and Travis Mills, she has performed at the likes of Laneway and Splendour in the Grass and collaborated with DZ Deathrays, Tasha the Amazon and Briggs. The first member of her family to attend University, Jess is a peer support worker and runs music workshops for young people in the outer suburbs of Meanjin.

KARL S. WILLIAMS

Wearing his heart on his sleeve creating musical pieces that are vulnerable and transcendent, Karl S. Williams’ genre-defying blend of blues, roots, folk and Americana has earned him praise from outlets like The Courier Mail, The Guardian and Bluesfest Director Peter Noble himself. A talented singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, visual artist and poet, he’s played at many renowned festivals, including Bluesfest and Woodford Folk Festival. His songs are a distillation of life, love and the human condition. Delivered with powerful conviction that takes your breath away, a Karl S. Williams performance is frequently referred to as a visceral and ‘spiritual experience’, leaving an audience slightly altered in the best way possible.

MASS SKY RAID

Mass Sky Raid have had a big year, announcing a show at Brisbane’s Progfest, and securing major international support slots with TRAPT (USA) in February. The Gold Coast alt-rock outfit released their debut EP Courage Under Fire in 2013. With rave reviews, including rock bible Blunt Magazine giving their album a 4.5 star rating, Mass Sky Raid quickly secured support slots with Dead Letter Circus, Twelve Foot Ninja, and I Am Giant (UK). With ongoing support from radio stations including Triple M, 4ZZZ and 2FBi, and over 40 other stations worldwide, including BBC1 & BBC6 in London, their debut album Science of Fiction was highly anticipated. With their recent singles receiving significant airplay, Mass Sky Raid are one rock band to watch.

PEACH FUR

After forming in High School, this four-piece has captivated music lovers with their psychedelic tunes that serve us a range of different flavours of rock, with a fusion of psych surf-pop vibes. After an intense build up that gained the attention of the industry at a national level, Peach Fur released their E.P’s Pleasures and Necessities (2015), Doreen Drive (2018) and their latest Awake (2020). Reaching over 8 million streams, Triple J airplay and more than 65K listeners worldwide, Peach Fur have continued to rise.

A ray of light in the current fog that is covid-19, the Gold Coast Music Awards (GCMAs) is celebrating 50 finalists across nine categories, heralding the event’s seventh year of celebrating the city’s creative gold. BECKAH AMANI

Beckah Amani is one of the freshest voices to emerge in a long time. Bringing her soul-folk to the masses in 2020 with her thought-provoking debut track, Standards, Beckah caught the attention of many, including international superstar, Tones and I, who went on to place Standards in her Instagram-based competition, That One Song. Accumulating high praises on triple J unearthed, Standards was added to triple J, MTV, Triple J Unearthed, 4ZZZ and Double J rotation. Continuing the momentum, 2021 saw Beckah Amani take home two Queensland Music Awards (Best Emerging Artist and the Billy Thorpe Scholarship) and open for Tones and I in the span of one week, adding to other supports including Busby Marou and Sahara Beck.

DENNIS.

Award-winning singer-songwriter, DENNIS., combines her love for swaggering grooves, relatable melodies and angelic yet bitey vocals, inviting listeners into an electronic indie-pop party none of us want to miss. Since her debut, DENNIS. has hit the ground running, taking out the coveted inaugural Gold Coast Music Prize at the 2020 Gold Coast Music Awards; ‘channeling that big budget Nordic energy’ (Tommy Faith, Triple J) with her previous singles; pairing up with local and international producers Jarryd Shuker, MDWS and Blake Malone; and spending time in Nashville on a scholarship working with world renowned producer/songwriter Trey Bruce. Launching into 2021 with bops, What You Do and Stuck In My Ways, DENNIS. is certainly one to watch. So, hold that bus and get on it…

EUCA

EUCA is a soft-rock singer-songwriter from Gold Coast, Queensland. First and foremost a lyricist, her storytelling highlights her deep-rooted folk influences in an otherwise pop-rock parcel. Drawing upon the likes of Middle Kids, Phantastic Ferniture, Catfish & The Bottleman, Zoology and Missy Higgins, this little chick is all about the sweet-spot between heavenly melodies, brawny riffs and take-no-shit emotional integrity. The worst year of her life slapped EUCA in the face, had her reevaluate her passions and jump back into her music. Thrilled with the love thrown at her debut single, NOT CHAMPAGNE, which has amassed almost half a million Spotify streams, EUCA has since continued her successful run with bangers, I HATE THE WAY and SPITE.

GENIIE BOY

Geniie Boy is ready to make our wishes come true, with Gold Coast based singer-songwriter, Alisha Todd, and award-winning producer and multi-instrumentalist, Scott French, joining forces in this new indie-pop duo. Dishing up an amalgamation of Maggie Rogers’ pop sensibilities, Corrine Bailey-Rae’s sweetness and a bit of HAIM’s badass energy, Scott’s musical experiments and slyly sophisticated production style builds perfectly around Alisha’s rich vocals and authentic antipodean accent – a signature of the duo’s sound. Award-winning musicians in their own right, who have both toured internationally and played some of Australia’s most well-loved music festivals, together Geniie Boy are creating ‘memorable and magical’ (Abby Butler, Triple J) ear worms with hooks, beats and harmonies that will have you humming happily for days.

TALIA ROSE

LGBTQIA+ artist Talia Rose is a Gold Coast-based singer known for her brooding lyrics blended with an alt-indie touch. Talia grew up in New Zealand, and at the age of 11 moved to Darwin with her family. At only 16, she had to move out of home, and after spending over a year homeless and couch surfing in the Northern Territory, Talia decided to turn her life around and made the move to the Gold Coast in January 2020 to follow her passions and pursue a career in music.

Coming out on top and still building her fanbase from the ground up, her latest single Trash has accumulated over 100,000 streams on Spotify and was added to four Spotify editorial playlists at release, including Pop EDGE, Indie Arrivals, Brekkie Time, and New Music Friday. With another single release soon, followed by talks of an EP, we can expect more exciting music from the young artist.

A ray of light in the current fog that is lockdown, the Gold Coast Music Awards (GCMAs) today announced 50 finalists across nine categories, heralding the event’s seventh year of celebrating the city’s creative gold.

Presented by Blank Street Press in partnership with SPRINGTIME festival, the achievements of Gold Coast’s artists and venues are set to take centre stage at a dazzling red-carpet affair at Home Of The Arts (HOTA) on Saturday 4 September.

Leading the charge with finalist positions in more than four categories including the coveted Artist Of The Year gong is award-winning hip-hop songstress Jesswar, enigmatic indie-rockers Peach Fur, and international country sensation Casey Barnes. First-time finalists are likewise recognised, including acoustic gem Beckah Amani who’s chasing Breakout Artist Of The Year following massive Queensland Music Award wins and a Tones and I support slot; indie-pop duo Geniie Boy and First Nations artist-fronted hitmakers Selve and AYA J.

“For a year that saw the music industry gutted with uncertainty, reduced venue capacities and cancelled events, Gold Coast’s musicians and our beloved venues have outdone themselves. While we can only give away a small number of awards, we really want to acknowledge the immense achievements of all nominees,” said Gold Coast Music Awards chairperson, Samantha Morris.

Despite a tough year for the industry, the exceptional entrants made judging tough too. With more than 650 nominations received this year, “Each category was passionately debated by judges and for the first time, we even released the judging shortlist to acknowledge the quality of talent in the region.”

“More and more Gold Coast artists are growing into national and international exports, including our alumni: Amy Shark, Hollow Coves, Eliza and the Delusionals, Jacob Lee and Wolfmother’s Ian Peres. It’s exciting to have seen and supported their progression over the years and we can’t wait to see what this year’s crop achieves in the future,” said Ms Morris.

Organisers, industry and supporters, including Gold Coast Mayor, Tom Tate, are looking forward to the Awards’ return this year, following the 2020 event’s inevitable cancellation, before it went on to stream virtually to more than 29,000 music industry representatives and fans, setting a precedent for online music award presentations nationwide.

“The Gold Coast Music Awards is an important beacon for our local music industry during these challenging times. I congratulate all the nominated artists and businesses and look forward to celebrating the strength and resilience of the local scene and the quality of their output,” Tate said.

Like Santa Claus spreading hope and happiness, GCMAs 2021 is bound to feel like Christmas for industry and fans alike, as we gather to toast the creative community and give thanks for the endless joy great music and music venues alike, bring to our lives.

Live Review: It’s Smiles All Round For QLD’s Newest Island Music Festival

As people have just been able to appreciate live music in its many states over the past few months, the rewarding experience of sharing live music as a community is a known rare luxury. With the ominous feeling of lockdown never being too far away from the minds of many, festivals have been one of the most contentious events during the coronavirus pandemic. The logistics of organising a festival is a tough process, and even that can be dependent on the right environmental circumstances to ensure a successful event. This is an important part of why the very first Coochiemudlo Island Festival, held on 8 May 2021, was such a resounding success in its unique and powerful experience.

As all participants boarded a brief, but beautiful ferry ride from Victoria Point on Brisbane’s southside unto the shore of Coochiemudlo, there was an immediate charm to the isolation, and comfort in the welcoming hospitality. The event took place in Mudlo Gardens just next to the ferry terminal, so the very moment punters took their first steps off the boat they were welcomed to the vibrant sounds of the day.

Kicking off the festival was Coochiemudlo-based band, Red Belly Black. The trio performed a selection of cover songs that suited the relaxed vibes of the island well. Songs performed included 7 Seconds by Youssou N’Dour ft. Neneh Cherry, and Gotye and Kimbra’s infamous Somebody That I Used To Know. The highlight was definitely their rendition of These Boots Were Made For Walkin’ which had audience members up dancing, setting the tone for a carefree day of fun, sun and sound.

Next to take to the stage was Brisbane belle Ruby Gilbert. Delighting the festival crowd that soon packed out the small amphitheatre with camping chairs and picnic rugs, the enchanting country-rock songstress carried beautiful lyrics amidst a background of western twang and soulful melodies that instantly wowed punters. Wearing possibly the coolest gold, sparkly dress our team has ever seen, the songwriter and guitarist played a myriad of tracks, including a great performance of her 2018 song Cold Hearted Killers and her newest single No Vacancy. Accompanied by her band, Ruby Gilbert put on a fantastic set of bluesy, toe-tapping tracks.

Following Ruby’s resounding performance, dazzling octet The Holy Rollercoasters warmed the crowd further with their extensive brass section and seemingly unlimited amount of talent. At Coochiemudlo Island Festival, they were spilling off the stage, but that did not stop them from delivering an incredibly funky and polished performance. From the very first note through to their closer, Bathe In The Blood of The Lamb, the band delivered a high-energy performance that pumped up the crowd.

Fans were then graced with some local pop-rock royalty in the form of Adele & The Chandeliers. The band features Adele Pickvance from The Go-Betweens on bass and lead vocals, Scott Mercer on guitar, and Jonny Pickvance on drums. The trio played tracks from their debut album including Looking For Something, German On My Mind, and Swimming With Sharks with many kids up the front dancing along to the jangly-pop bops. Adele asked who in the audience liked birds, before closing the set with what seemed to be a new song. The band’s sound reminded many of the original rock and roll heritage that founded such a vibrant and constantly evolving scene here in Brisbane; simultaneously exposing a new generation to this history in the modern era.

In a perfect segue, this current culture can be seen in one of its best forms in the one and only Karl S. Williams. Having just been awarded a Queensland Music Award the week of, there was no better time to celebrate the blues artist and his incandescent music. Joined by his band, the sun began to set over the picturesque gardens of Coochiemudlo to the growling and resonating sound of one of the Gold Coast’s favourite sons. Sharing many tunes from his latest album Lifeblood including set opener Fear and rousing anthem Keep Me On The Road, punters treasured every moment of Karl’s set with resounding applause.

As night descended, the stage lightshow was in full effect for the band who inspired the creation of Coochiemudlo Island Festival. The Double Happiness graced the stage to share their awesome surf gaze sound with a crowd who shared the moment with dancing and laughter. It was a surreal scene to see these Brisbane beauties bring a great wave of happiness and wholesome vibes to all corners of the island. Leading ladies Meg and Kristin even dressed the part, donning matching jellyfish patterned dresses – an ode to the jellyfish they speak of in their track Coochiemudlo. A delightful spectacle of sound and smiles, The Double Happiness have no doubt cemented themselves as the unofficial-but-official human mascots of the isle.

Rounding out the evening were two incredibly impressive acts in the form of a solo Bobby Alu, and brilliant octet Chocolate Strings. Hands down the highlight of Bobby’s set (aside from his amazing music of course) was when he brought his beloved mum on stage for a boogie – it was a beautiful moment that captured the spirit of what Coochiemudlo Island Festival is all about: sharing good times with those you love. And if you’ve never seen this ukulele-yielding man perform live, we highly recommend you add it to your life’s bucket list – pronto! Chocolate Strings equally pulled at our heart strings with a song dedication to their children that again summed up the family-friendly essence of Queensland’s newest island music festival.

The eclectic variety of the music was magnificently curated and put into effect by the one and only John Russell of 4000 Records. Easily the most seen person of the festival due to his frantic movements about the island to ensure everything went to plan, John’s hard work was well noted and greatly appreciated by all.

Coochiemudlo Island Festival was a raging success not just as a festival, but as a community gathering to support a local scene which has weathered one of its toughest years to date. Amongst the backdrop of iconic festivals such as Bluesfest and Splendour seeing cancellations and uncertainty, being able to share in a small, community focused event that catered to its audience was an experience that rivalled many of its larger counterparts.

Lovingly dubbed Coochella by adoring attendees, there is sure to be even more smiles to come from Coochiemudlo Island Festival in the future.

Premiere: Summer Never Ends On Katanak’s New Single ‘Sunday’ Feat. Joolz

Lazy Sundays and laidback summer days were made for each other, and on their quintessential surf-rock number Sunday (out 7 May), Katanak and Joolz blend the best of both to ensure the good vibes endure all year round.

Brought together during covid-lockdown when they came across each other’s work on social media, Brisbane’s Katanak and Gold Coast songstress Joolz, turned unfortunate circumstances into an opportunity for creative collaboration. Melding Joolz’s indie, RnB electro and hip-hop background with Katanak’s indie-pop style, it was clear even after just one writing session that the two had found their groove; the result is the sound of summer.

“Sunday is our ode to summer. The heat, the sun, the lazy days, you can hear it all in this song. When this track is playing you just chill. Instant thoughts of grabbing a skateboard and catching up with friends run through your head,” said Dylan Cattanach aka Katanak.

“The song captures that beach, party, fun vibe and is the perfect antidote to the end of summer blues.”

A jangly pop piece that washes over you like the waves of the ocean, Sunday is the soundtrack for everything from a solo day spent relaxing to letting your hair down with mates. Painting a picture of paradise with sweet pop lines, Sunday has a musical-like quality and would easily be at home in a Disney production as a duet between the likes of a Jonas Brother and Demi Lovato, such is its upbeat and feel-good prowess.

While they may not be Disney stars, these two local creatives do have a star quality about them along with a host of cool chops to their names. Joolz is best known for her time with Electrik Lemonade and has also worked with M-Phazes and Bliss N Eso, while Katanak has spent time touring with Australian legend Pete Murray and took out The QUBE Effect People’s Choice Award in 2020.

Sending out summer vibes like a sprinkler in full swing, Katanak and Joolz’s Sunday is here to keep the good times rolling.

Premiere: Tylah Winyard Transits Through Time On ‘So Sad’ Music Video

Tapping into feelings, experiences and home truths, Gold Coast belle Tylah Winyard transits through time on her reflective new music video, So Sad.

An upbeat pop-laden tune with hip-hop and trap undertones, So Sad charts the ups and downs of a relationship breakup and the healing cycle one inevitably must go through.

“The song now feels more like a breakup heartbreak anthem with the message of steps and phases of how people heal from a relationship ending. The hurt, questioning, healing and rising above the grief until you are in the right headspace to move on with your future,” said Tylah.

Described as creating sounds of the “future pop-cult movement,” Tylah’s So Sad music video is also painted in a futuristic hue, using symbolic settings to seamlessly combine three different timelines.

“In the music video, it was important to bring in the elements of contemplation and the feelings and thoughts expressed in my lyrics from the angle of present, past and future. I did this by setting the scene of the present and future in a capsule symbolising my cocoon phase (grieving and growth), and time travelling in a bubble to my past to tie it altogether.”

“The bubble also felt relevant because of 2020 and how we have all felt confined and closed off from the world and people in various ways. The concept was conceived almost a year before covid so that was another reason it was the perfect time to release this video now.”

Having collaborated on multiple Itunes-charting tracks and two years spent touring Europe, Tylah is excited to be taking the wheel of her solo project, with So Sad the first sample to be lifted from her debut EP Invisible, which arrives in September.

“Invisible is the ideal title for my debut EP, as that’s how I have felt so far with love, life and my music and trying to break through in the industry like so many other artists. The songs on my EP are all about that, with a mixture of serious lyrics and upbeat tracks that celebrate the ups and downs of life, love, and heartbreak that 2020 delivered.”

She may have felt invisible in the past, but Tylah Winyard’s future sure is looking good!
