#1 A Tribe Called Quest “Low End Theory” + “Midnight Marauders”

These are by far the two hip-hop records that I listened to the most growing up. I know every lyric, every skit, track #s, liner notes, shout outs and so on. My cousin Jessica gave me the tape when I was about 13 and i’ll never forget it! (thanks for setting me on the right path!)

#2 Portishead “Dummy”

I remember seeing the video for “Sour Times” just this one time on Musique+ (Quebec’s equivalent to MTV) and I was hooked. I then saved money for a week and special ordered it from HMV. This would be my introduction to the whole trip-hop movement.

#3 Rage Against the Machine (self-titled)

As you can tell from my list I was always more of a hip-hop kid but I could get down with more rock things too as long as they had that same kind of feeling. I remember we had 2 Rage songs on our basketball warmup tape! A bullllllet in yoooo head!!!!

#4 Roni Size “Reprazent”

One of the first electronic records I listened to. Roni Size was a revelation for me because it had that real urban sound, especially the tracks with MC’s. Just the 160bpm beat pattern was something I had never heard! I did know what the hell Drum & Bass was but I liked it instantly.

#5 Mc Solaar “Prose Combat”

Ask any kid from France or Quebec you are always going to hear about this record and IAM’s “L’école du micro d’argent” as the two most important french rap albums ever. I am listing this one because it came first. At the time, this was hands down the best hip-hop record to come out outside of  the US.

#6 Outkast “ATLiens”

I was always more into the East Coast sound so this was a huge revelation to me because of its originality and space age funkyness far outside the tradictional east coast boom bap sound.

#7 Mary J Blige “What’s the 411?”

I had to pick at least one R&B record because, I won’t lie… I used to listen to some of the cheeeeesiest but dopest R&B… Boyz II Men, SWV, Silk, Jade, Janet Jackson, and so on!

In July, Mary Anne Hobbs dropped the really big news that she was stepping down from hosting her very influencial show on BBC Radio 1. She is without a doubt the most influencial radio personality in the world of dubstep and abstract riddims. I had the pleasure to play with her this year and I can tell you that she is truly all about that real love of sharing music with others. Her last show will air on September 8th and god knows it will be a big one!

Now for the good news: the person who will be stepping in that spot will be Benji B, host of the Deviation show on BBC 1xtra. Along with Gilles Peterson, Benji B is one of the radio guys that I follow the most. For anyone who likes what you hear on the MIMS podcasts be sure to check him out because we play tons of the same stuff!

Big up to Benji B, I will be following Deviation into the Radio 1 era!

I can’t front, this new jam by mr. Cee-lo Green is infectious. Kind of the same way you felt when you heard “Crazy” for the first time. I doubt that this song will be played as much by mainstream radio but I can’t hate on Cee-Lo, he is an uncompromising artist that deserves all the coin coming his way! This is just a great pop song period.

Dope dope new stuff from AHU (full name Ahu Kelesoglu). Long tipped as a vocalist to watch, Ahu steps softly from the shadows of her lauded guest appearances to deliver To Love.

It’s a captivating performance from the Turkish singer who I first discovered as the lead vocalist for the Flying Lotus track “Roberta Flack” and also on a recent Grooveman Spot track called “Affection” which was featured on my podcast #35. I’ve been listening to this track a lot this week and it’s going to be on the next show fo sho!

Her long-time friend and musical ally Paul White provides the subtle, ever-shifting backdrop, a nuanced electronic counterpoint to the more organic psychedelia of his recent …and the Purple Brain LP.

This is one of those undeniable Jungle Classics! Originally released in 1995 on Philly Blunt records (who also released another of my all-time faves Firefox‘s “The Warning”).

I remember first hearing this jam on a Dream Teem mix CD and I’ve been bumping it ever since. Leviticus is actually an alias of Jumping Jack Frost, one of Jungle / D&B’s most important figures.  The studio engineer behind “The Burial” was actually a young Dillinja, and Optical was also involved in the production. We can see why it still remains a classsssic!

In the shadows of the Ninja Tune label for a very long time with her collaborations with Mr Scruff and more recently on the Bonobo ‘Black Sand’ album, Andreya Triana will finally deliver her first album on September 07, 2010.

The first time I heard Andreya’s voice was back in 2006 in the Various Assets Red Bull Music Academy : Melbourne 2006 Edition with the amazing Flying Lotus’ song ‘Tea Leaf Dancer’. With that beautifully haunting vocals, I knew right away, that this girl had potential.

If you are a fan of the latest Bonobo Album “Black Sands” then you will love this album. Andreya is the vocalist on this album, and her first solo release draws many influences from the atmospheric sound of Simon Green. The songs really grow on you the more you listen. Get it!

Finally, if you missed her at the 2010 Montreal International Jazz Fest, she will be back november 6th with Bonobo at the National.

Another forgotten little nugget of that real hip-hop shit from the Juggaknots from NYC.

Really simple but oh so effective beat from producer Breeze Brewin off the Use Your Confusion (2006) record. And hmmm, well the title refers to the genius Lady’s Man – Leon Phelps from very underrated SNL dude Tim Meadow!

The Night Trackin’ boys are still going strong with the bookings, this time bringing one of my favorite producers to town, Holland’s MARTYN.

Montreal has been having one of the best summers in terms of events in as long as I can remember. And this one is a nice way to end it! Flying Lotus, the man who reinvented the hip-hop vs electronic music game is touching down in Montreal.

Flying Lotus is definitely J Dilla‘s heir to the throne of next-level beats. Since 2008 there have been so many new producers emulating his sound, it isn’t a bad thing… more good music I guess. But since then, Flylo has continued to progress and his last record “Cosmogramma” proves that when it comes to forward thinking beats, he can’t be touched.

He will be joined by some of MTL’s most talented peoples: Lunice, Hovatron and my good homeboy Seb Diamond. Do not miss this one!

In any genre rooted in the underground, there is always going to be tons of debate as soon as some songs start sounding too pop or commercial but in the UK it’s happened to every single genre, whether it’s Trip Hop, Acid Jazz, UK Garage, Speed Garage… they have all had their “crossover” tracks that made noise in the general charts.

Sooo, after hearing so much about Katy B’s “On a mission” from my twitter feed and things, I was pretty curious to finally sit down and listen to it. First off, it’s reassuring that this track was put together by some of the best people in the scene (produced by Zinc, Geeneus and Benga, out on Rinse records) and secondly well, that song does have that undeniable “can’t get that chorus out of your head” feeling. So, i’m on board! Skream‘s “Midnight Request Line” will always remain the genre defining track for DJ’s but this just might be the “crossover” track that hits the UK charts pretty high… just as “Re-Rewind” was that track for 2step 10 years ago…

Ohhh, and to make that release even sweeter, it comes with a remix from my good homie Roska. He is getting massive praise from everyone. Great to see him associated with the tune of the moment! Couldn’t be happier for that dude.

Was just doing some last minute digging for a gig this week and I uncovered this little 2 minute gem of a track. Games is the work of one Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never, and his buddy Joel Ford of Tiger City. I had never heard of Oneohtrix but apparently its getting peoples attention because even the mighty 14Tracks.com dedicated an edition entirely to him (check it here).

While we are all waiting for the release of Bilal’s new album, here a little video of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Ensemble featuring Bilal recorded live in Los Angeles. The song is a cover of “Someday We’ll All Be Free” from the one and only Donny Hathaway. Bilal is one of these artists that you have to experience live. Simply an amazing vocalist who deserves to be known. His next album will be call Airtight’s Revenge on Plug Research and will be released on September 14th.

Miguel Atwood-Ferguson impresses me a lot. He is a freelance multi-instrumentalist/producer that is involved in interesting soul and hip-hop projects like Suite For Ma Dukes (2009) paired-up with Carlos Nino in honour to James Yancey aka “Jay Dilla”. His jazz interpretation of the beautiful melodies that Jay Dilla did are mind blowing. For the past years, he’s been working with the new generation of soul artist like Dwele and Aloe Blacc to name a few. I’m putting that on my wish-list for the 2011 Montreal International Jazz Fest!

Not your typical mixtape where you only find super rare stuff that actually kinda sucks (sometimes theres a reason why an album is rare, it’s because it sucks and no one ever liked it!!)
