DOLLY PARTON – THE UNDISPUTED COUNTRY MUSIC QUEEN (JANUARY 19, 1946 – AUGUST 25, 2026)

Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946 in Pittman Center (near Sevierville), Tennessee. She was the fourth of 12 children born to Robert Lee Parton and Avie Lee Parton in a poor Appalachian farming family.

Music played an important role in Dolly's early life. She learned folk songs and church music from her mother; her earliest public performances were in the church, beginning at age six. At seven, she started playing a homemade guitar. When she was eight, her uncle bought her first guitar and she sang on local radio and TV shows starting as a child. She debuted as a performer at a young age 13 in 1959, when she was introduced by Johnny Cash in Grand Ole Opry.

Dolly Parton moved to Nashville immediately after graduating from high school in 1964 and gained widespread fame performing as a duet partner on Porter Wagoner's television program “The Porter Wagoner Show” from 1967 to 1974.

Dolly wrote and recorded many songs including classics “Coat of Many Colors” (1971), “Jolene” (1973), “I Will Always Love You” (1974), “Here You Come Again” (1977), “9 to 5” (1980), and “Islands in the Stream” (1983). She has sold over 100 million records, won 11 Grammy Awards (including her 2011 Lifetime Achievement Grammy) and received 55 Grammy nominations, the third-most nominations of any female artist and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2022).

Dolly Parton developed “blonde bombshell” persona early in her career, and soon she became famous for her towering bouffant hairstyle, buxom physique, and glitzy dresses.

In the 1980s Dolly Parton delved into acting and appeared in several successful films, including the comedy Nine to Five (1980; which was also called 9 to 5); The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982); and Steel Magnolias, which was a comedy-drama. She guest-starred in many TV series and appeared in several feature films and TV movies in the 1990s and 2000s.

Dolly Parton was also successful in business, opening the Dollywood Appalachian-themed amusement park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in 1986 and the Imagination Library, which she launched as the global children's literacy program in 1995, mailing millions of free books to children.

Dolly married Carl Dean in 1966 after meeting him on her first day in Nashville in 1964; they had no children but remained together until Carl’s death in 2025. Dolly Parton passed away after a "brief battle" with cancer in Nashville on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80.

Lowell Fillmore popularly known as Sly Dunbar was a drummer extraordinaire and co-founder of the revolutionary Taxi Records label. His collaboration with Robbie Shakespeare led to the formation of Sly & Robbie, which became the greatest rhythm section in reggae history. The duo reshaped the sound of reggae, dub and dancehall, originally from roots to rub-a-dub to the digital era and beyond.

For over four decades, starting from Kingston studios to global stages, Sly & Robbie grooves powered classics for Black Uhuru, Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs and countless others, helping carry Jamaica’s voice around the world. In short, from the early 1970s through the 1980s and 1990s to the early 2000s if Sly & Robbie play in your song in the studios it was bound to be a hit.

As one half of Sly & Robbie, the Riddim Twins, Sly Dunbar broke boundaries, blending organic drumming with new rhythmic ideas and influencing genres beyond reggae. His work earned multiple Grammy Awards and nominations and wide recognition for elevating reggae music on the world stage.

Sly Dunbar's heartbeat was the heartbeat of Jamaica and the entire reggae world. Though he’s gone, his legacy will live in every beat that carries reggae forward.

TEMS AND HER 2ND GRAMMY WIN

Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, got her 2^nd Grammy at the 67th Grammy Awards. She won the Best African Music Performance category with her song “Love Me JeJe”, beating “Tomorrow” by Yemi Alade, “MMS” by Asake featuring Wizkid, “Sensational” by Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, and “Higher” by Burna Boy.

Tems has been very consistence in her performance on the Afrobeats music scene. She has now become the first Nigerian to have two Grammys to her name having won her first Grammy in 2023 for Best Melodic Rap Performance with Future‘s “Wait For You” featuring Drake at the 65th Grammy Awards.

In the Grammy Award winning song “Love Me Jeje” Tems actually sampled a line from Seyi Sodimu's 1997 Nigerian classic of the same name. Tems’ song was a great hit that has racked up 125 million listens on Spotify and 21 million views on YouTube.

Back home in Nigeria Tems has received numerous accolades from Nigerians including the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu who has commended the singer for bringing pride to the country on the global stage for the second time.

Quincy Jones was a composer, arranger, producer, cultural icon and a musical genius whose contributions have shaped the global music industry for over seven decades. He has worked with some of the greatest artists of all time, from Frank Sinatra to Michael Jackson. His influence spans jazz, pop, R&B, hip-hop, and film scoring, making him one of the most versatile and accomplished figures in music history.

Quincy Jones was born on March 14, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. His early years were shaped by hardship, including the Great Depression and family struggles. His love for music emerged during his teenage years in Seattle, Washington, where he played the trumpet and developed skills in composition and arranging.

Quincy attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston but left early to tour with jazz great Lionel Hampton. He became a sought-after jazz arranger and worked with legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, and Count Basie.
However, in the late 1950s, he moved to Paris to study composition under Nadia Boulanger, a mentor to many great composers. He later became the first African American vice president of a major record label, Mercury Records, in 1961.

Quincy was one of the first Black composers to score Hollywood films, including: In the Heat of the Night (1967); The Italian Job (1969); and Roots (TV miniseries, 1977). He pioneered the crossover between jazz and film scoring, influencing later composers in Hollywood.

Quincy collaborated with Michael Jackson in the 1970s – 1980s, an excellent working relationship that lead to the production of three of Michael Jackson’s most iconic albums: Off the Wall (1979), which revolutionized pop music with its blend of R&B, funk, and disco; Thriller (1982), which became the best-selling album of all time, featuring hits like Billie Jean and Beat It; and Bad (1987), which further cemented Michael Jackson’s global superstardom. In short, Quincy’s work with Jackson changed the music industry forever, setting new standards in production, marketing, and music videos.

Not done yet, Quincy Jones delved into humanitarian and cultural mainstream international activities creating enduring impact with the production of “We Are the World” (1985), which became a global anthem for famine relief in Africa. He also founded the Quincy Jones Foundation to support education, global health, and youth empowerment. He went further to advocate for diversity in the entertainment industry and mentored many young musicians.

Quincy Jones passed away at the age of 91 on Sunday, November 3, 2024 leaving an indelible mark on the world's music and entertainment industry. He has won 28 Grammy Awards out of 80 nominations, making him one of the most awarded artists in history. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Onyeka Onwenu hailed from Arondizuogu, a town in Ideato North LGA, Imo State She was born on January 31, 1952 and raised in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. She has an impressive career that spans several fields, including music, acting, human rights activism, journalism, and politics. She was one of the early highly educated musicians Nigeria has produced. She attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts, USA, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Communication. She obtained a Masters Degree in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research, New York. She worked for the United Nations as a tour guide before returning to Nigeria in 1980 to complete her mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), in Lagos, Nigeria.

Onyeka Onwenu began her music career in the 1980s blending genres like highlife, pop, and gospel. She was known for her powerful voice and charismatic stage presence, which earned her the nickname “Elegant Stallion” from the Nigerian press. Her music resonates across generations, with iconic songs like “Ekwe”, “You and I”, and “One Love” Onwenu’s legacy as a singer/songwriter, actress, and social activist continues to inspire and influence Nigerian culture and beyond.

Onyeka Onwenu’s recording career began in 1981 while still with the NTA, releasing the album For the Love of You, a pop album which featured an orchestral cover of Johnny Nash's "Hold Me Tight", produced by Berkley Jones. Her second album was Endless Life, produced by Sonny Okosun, and included another cover – the Everley Brothers' "Walk Right Back". Both records were released under the EMI label. Her first album with Polygram Records, “In The Morning Light”, was released in 1984. Recorded in London, it featured the track "Masterplan" written by her close friend Tyna Onwudiwe.

Onyeka Onwenu had a notable collaboration with King Sunny Ade, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated musicians. Their professional relationship was marked by the release of the hit song “Wait for Me” in 1984, which became a significant success in Nigeria. “Wait for Me” was more than just a song; it was part of a public health campaign aimed at promoting responsible family planning and safe sex.

Onyeka Onwenu made an impact as a newsreader and reporter while she was an employee of NTA. In 1984, she wrote and presented the internationally acclaimed BBC/NTA documentary “Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches” which became the definitive film about corruption in Nigeria, as well as the intractable Niger Delta agitation for resource control and campaign against environmental degradation in the oil rich region of Nigeria

Onyeka Onwenu also excelled as an actress, leaving an indelible mark on Nollywood with roles in films like “Half of a Yellow Sun” and “Lion Heart.” Her passion for social change led her into politics and activism, where she championed women’s rights and advocated for marginalized groups.

Onyeka Onwenu was appointed Chairperson of Imo State Council for Arts and Culture by former Governor Ikedi Ohakim, and in 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed her the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development. She notably kept her personal life private and often refused to disclose private information regarding her ex-husband, a Yoruba Muslim, with whom she bore two children – Tijani Charles and Abraham.

Onyeka Onwenu died on Tuesday July 30 2024 at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos after slumping at the birthday party of the CEO of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Mrs. Stella Okoli.

Nigerian music lovers heaved a sigh of relief after the disappointing performance of Nigerian artists nominated for 2024 Grammy Awards.
Nigerian superstar Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has made history as the first African artist to win a Chinese Music Award.
The singer achieved this feat with his song ‘Calm Down’ which he had remixed with the American superstar Selena Gomez to win the Best Collaboration of the Year at the 2024 Hito Music Award in the Republic of China.

The award which was presented by Hit FM, Taiwan was hosted by DJ Andy. Rema has therefore joined the American and British artists on the list of the few international musicians to have won the Taiwanese award.

The Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has won her first Grammy Award. The 2023 Grammy award which was the 65^th edition held on Sunday night February 5 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, United States.

REMA BECOMES ARTISTE WITH THE MOST VIEWED MUSIC VIDEO IN NIGERIA IN 2022

Famous Nigerian musician and rapper, Divine Ikubor, professionally known by his stage name Rema, has become the 2022 Nigerian artiste with the most viewed music video on YouTube.

The 22-years-old singer, beat his senior colleagues, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, Daniel Oluwatobiloba Anidugbe known as Kizz Daniel and others to win the title.
A compiled list released on 30th December by renowned digital eco-system firm, Dataleum and data intelligence, which analysed views from official music videos in 2022, disclosed that Rema’s hit music ‘Calm Down’ video got 313 million views, while the remix featuring Selena Gomez has 204 million views.
Following closely was Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last’ which garnered over 144 million views, and Kizz Daniel’s ‘Buga’ with 110 million views.
Rema song “Calm Down,” remix, which was influenced by Selena Gomez, is one of the biggest of 2022, surpassing 300 million views on YouTube in just 10 months.

‘Buga’ which was released in May 2022, has caught the attention of both young and the old, and it was listed as the number one song in 2022 google search by Nigerians.

The song ‘Buga’ is undoubtedly one of the most popular songs in Nigeria at the moment and has also become the number one song on Apple Music’s Top 100 Chart in Nigeria.

CHRIS AJILO THE NIGERIAN HIGHLIFE MUSIC VETERAN (1930 -2021)

The Nigerian veteran highlife musician and producer, Christopher Ajilore, popularly known as Chris Ajilo who died recently was renowned for his hit tune ‘Eko Ogba Gbere’.

Chris Ajilo born in Osun State in 1930 was a very dedicated and highly disciplined artiste. He was such an outstanding musician who maintained a sense of integrity and professionalism throughout his career. He was dedicated to his craft as a musician and for encouraged the younger ones. He focused on recording and delivering good music for posterity.

Chris Ajilo was the man who led the Independence Band at the Federal Palace Hotel in 1960. He was the people’s saxophonist, a music teacher by calling, artiste and a repertoire manager with a difference, a producer of numerous hit songs and numerous hit artistes and the quintessential copyright man.

He was for many years a producer at Polygram Records now Premier Music. He produced several artistes including Osita Osadebe’s popular song, ‘Osondi Owendi’ among others. Chris Ajilo’s best known songs include ‘Eko O Gba Gbere’, ‘Ariwo’, ‘Orilonise’, ‘Only You’, ‘Tetede’, ‘Ojo Nlo’, and ‘Emi Mimo’.

He is considered one of the last of the generation — including the likes of Victor Olaiya and Bobby Benson — who formed the Nigerian Union of Musicians, the first guild for musicians.

LIFE AND TIMES OF ROBBIE SHAKESPEARE (1953 - 2021)

Robbie Shakespeare, full name Robert Warren Dale Shakespeare was born in Kingston, Jamaica on 27th September 1953. He grew up to become a great bass player and one half of the legendary drum and bass production duo popularly known as Sly and Robbie. They became one of the most influential rhythm sections and production duo in the history of reggae music and with their independent production company and label Taxi Records, they worked with artists such as U Roy, Dennis Brown, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Gregory Isaacs, Black Uhuru and many more.

Their success and recognition led to them working outside of the reggae genre with artists such as Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker, Cindy Lauper and Grace Jones.
Robbie will be remembered as one of the greatest and most influential bass players in the world of reggae music.

Robbie Shakespeare died on 8th December 2021 following kidney surgery in Florida at the age of 68.

VICTOR UWAIFO THE NIGERIAN HIGHLIFE MAESTRO & GUITAR VIRTUOSO (1941-2021)

Highlife Maestro and Professor of Visual Arts, University of Benin, Sir Victor Efosa Uwaifo was born on 1st March 1941 in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria and obtained his secondary school education at the Western Boys' High School Benin and St. Gregory's College, Lagos, from 1957 to 1961.

He began playing guitar when he was 12 years old and grew up playing the instrument with dexterity and displayed kinetic dancing steps in his heydays. Some of Uwaifo’s albums ‘Joromi’ and ‘Mammy Water’ released in the early 60s, were instant hits and have remained evergreen. He was the winner of the first gold disc in Africa (Joromi) released in 1965 and seven other gold discs in Guitar boy, Arabade, Ekassa series and Akwete music. He recorded under the name Victor Uwaifo and His TItibitis.

Victor Uwaifo was also a writer, sculptor, and musical instrument inventor, University lecturer, and the first Honorable Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism in Nigeria, having been appointed by the administration of former governor Chief Lucky Igbinedion in Edo State 2001–2003. The music legend has travelled to many countries including the United States, Russia, Japan, United Kingdom, Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, France, Hungary, Rome, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Togo, Benin Republic, Spain, and Canada.

Sir Victor Uwaifo died at 80 after a brief illness in Benin City, Nigeria on 28^th August 2021. His legacies live on.

BURNA BOY THE TRAIL BLAZER IN THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY

Grammy award winning Nigerian singer Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulum popularly known as Burna Boy has made history as the first African artist to achieve over 100 million streams on Spotify, a Swedish audio streaming and media services provider. He made this mark with his last three albums; “African Giant”, “Outside” and “Twice As Tall” each of which had hit 100 million on the Spotify platform.

Earlier this year Burna Boy’s album “Twice As Tall” had won the best global music album at the 63^rd Grammy Awards. He is the second Nigerian artist to achieve this feat after Sikiru Adepoju won it at the 51^st edition in 2008.

Burna Boy had said in his acceptance speech ‘‘This a big win for my generation of Africans all over the world and this should be a lesson to every African out there, no matter where you are, no matter what you plan to do, you can achieve it because you are king’’. What an inspiring and encouraging words to the African youths in general.

LIFE AND TIMES OF BUNNY WAILER (1947 -2021)

Bunny Wailer, Reggae artist and co-founder of the Wailers reggae band died on Tuesday March 2, 2021 at the age of 73. Bunny Wailer, a baritone singer was born Neville O'Riley Livingston in Kingston, Jamaica on 10^th April 1947.

The Wailers were founded by Bunny Wailer, Bob Marley, and Peter Tosh in 1963. Bunny Wailer was the last surviving founding member after Marley and Tosh died in 1981 and 1987, respectively.

The Wailers and other Rasta musicians also popularized Rastafarian culture among better-off Jamaicans starting in the 1970s. Though Bob Marley and the Wailers were known for their music, they were also activists calling for action through their lyrics.

Johnny Nash signed the group to an exclusive publishing and recording contract with his JAD record label, formed in 1967 with Danny Sims, and financed some of the band's recordings.

Bunny Wailer won three Grammys for his work on "Hall Of Fame - A Tribute To Bob Marley's 50th Anniversary," "Time Will Tell - A Tribute To Bob Marley" and "Liberation (Album)."

The passing of Bunny Wailer, the last of the original Wailers, brings to a close the most vibrant period of Jamaica’s musical experience.

JOHNNY NASH BOWS OUT AT 80

The American reggae and pop singer-songwriter Johnny Nash, best known for the 1972 hit "I Can See Clearly Now" died on 6th October 2020 aged 80.The musician began singing as a child and made his major label debut with the 1957 song "A Teenager Sings the Blues".

Born in Houston, Jonny Nash was one of the first non-Jamaican singers to record reggae music in Kingston, Jamaica.
His single "I Can See Clearly Now" sold more than a million copies and reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1972, where it remained for four weeks.

He also had a No. 1 hit in the UK in 1975 with "Tears on My Pillow".

It was Nash that brought the reggae legend Bob Marley to limelight and helped him to sign a recording contract. Nash's covers of songs like "Stir It Up" helped bring Marley's music to a broader audience, and the pair later collaborated on a track called "You Poured Sugar On Me".
