Acoustic shows all the time. New acoustic recordings coming soon. Getting better at acoustic shows.

Punkcast 012 - Summer 2013 Interview Series: David Rovics

This summer, I plan on doing interviews every other week with punk artists of various types from all over the world. David Rovics is American, but is currently touring in Scotland. He sat down with me for 20 minutes or so talk to punk music, politics and more. I couldn't really take notes like I normally do when Tom and I do shows together. The plus side of doing these summer shows is that I have ultimate flexibility with scheduling. The down side is that show notes are either not going to happen or will require going back and reconstructing them.

I'd also like to apologize to David for taking so long to get this out. I was traveling last week and managed to get sick while doing so.

I couldn't be bothered to put together an intro. Law school is time-consuming. I let two months slip by and I just wanted to get some music out the door.

You'll notice I didn't worry about the licensees being -NC or not, so no flattr button this time. I hope to do a couple more October shows to check up and maybe I'll go libre at that point. I also didn't worry about finding band websites (except for The Spunk Lads since I have that queued up for the main show already). So, law school starts in 3 weeks and 3 days...or orientation does, anyway. If you've listened to previous shows you know I've been pondering how best to monetize the show. Right now the best thing you can do to help me keep the show going is donate to my webhosting for http://opensourceplaground.org (osp). While it's true osp and MMPunkcast don't have anything in common besides me, right now I'm in the middle of moving, looking for an apartment and all of that jazz. I am going to try to get flattr buttons up for all the shows. I apparently made one for the first show even though it's got -NC tracks in it. I guess I'll leave it up since no one has said anything. I'll continue to get flattr buttons up for shows that don't use -NC, which probably means I'll no longer be doing -NC. Whether I move to using -ND is still a decision I need to make. I probably won't because I'd like to use tracks here and for MMP.

Just in case you are wondering, I am planning to work for free culture/free software once getting out of school.

Anyway, for anyone who does not have a flattr account, feel free to donate to the webhosting. I doubt I'll be able to register as a 501(3)(c) to allow non-fee Google Checkout, but I will look into receiving donations via other means besides Dreamhost. I'm up for suggestions. It's a 2 for 1 deal today! Due to my slackness the June and July podcasts have come out today. I know it's poor podcasting form to release two in one day, but I'm a believer in the "release early and release often" philosophy.

On the thought of releasing early and releasing often, I have found myself spending more time on the intros than I thought I would but I think that's because it's just me rather than a discussion with Tom. Things are so new and in flux that I have a lot to say as well. Eventually I hope to say "this is the Music Manumit Punkcast" and be done with it!

Anyway, this show is a rerun of the Music Manumit Podcast interview with Australian singer/songwriter Isaac Graham. We discuss his punk roots, folk punk, his affiliation with Copyleft Record and more!

Per usual, I'm releasing only in the open format ogg. You can download it from the amazing archive.org. If you have an Android phone, this file will work. Many browsers also have ogg support built in. As for media players, Songbird on Windows/Mac will play ogg files. Eventually this will be a monthly punk*-only show of remixable Creative Commons music, brought to you my Doug of the Music Manumit Podcast. Many of the tracks will have been played on previous Music Manumit shows, but eventually I'll run out of punk songs from that show.
