Pantai Senggigi adalah tempat pariwisata yang terkenal di Lombok. Letaknya di sebelah barat pesisir Pulau Lombok. Pantai Senggigi memang tidak sebesar Pantai Kuta di Bali, tetapi seketika kita berada di sini akan merasa seperti berada di Pantai Kuta, Bali. Pesisir pantainya masih asri, walaupun masih ada sampah dedaunan yang masih berserakan karena jarang dibersihkan. Pemandangan bawah lautnya sangat indah, dan wisatawan bisa melakukan snorkling sepuasnya karena ombaknya tidak terlalu besar. Terumbu karangnya menjulang ketengah menyebabkan ombak besarnya pecah di tengah. Tersedia juga hotel-hotel dengan harga yang bervariasi, dari yang mahal sampai hotel yang berharga ekonomis.

Batu Bolong

Sekitar setengah jam dengan berjalan kaki, para wisatawan dapat menjumpai Batu Bolong di pantai ini. Ini adalah sebuah pura yang dibangun di atas karang yang terletak di tepi pantai. Menurut legenda masyarakat setempat dahulu kala sering diadakan pengorbanan seorang perawan untuk dimakankan kepada ikan hiu di tempat ini. Legenda lain mengatakan dahulu banyak para wanita yang menerjunkan diri dari tempat ini ke laut karena patah hati. Dari tempat ini juga terlihat Gunung Agung di Pulau Bali.

“Banting saja kemurunganmu di Bantimurung,” seloroh kawan saya saat kami bercakap mengenai obyek wisata andalan di Kabupaten Maros, Sulawesi Selatan. Jaraknya lebih kurang 45 km dari Kota Makassar.

Dan memang benar, selama saya melewatkan masa SMA di Maros dulu (1986-1989), Bantimurung menjadi pilihan berwisata bagi kami sekeluarga dan teman-teman sekolah. Selain memang tempatnya dekat, air terjun serta obyek wisata lain yang ada di sekitarnya menawarkan keindahan. Kemurungan itu rasanya bagai terbanting. Dari pusat kota Maros, Bantimurung sudah dapat dijangkau dengan waktu lebih kurang 20 menit dengan kendaraan pribadi atau angkutan umum.

Secara geografis objek wisata Bantimurung memiliki luas wilayah mencapai 6.619,11 km2 Memasuki kawasan ini, kita akan disambut oleh sebuah gapura besar dengan kupu-kupu raksasa, diikuti patung kera berukuran jumbo. Ini menandakan Bantimurung merupakan habitat asli kupu-kupu dan kera.

Air terjun jatuh perlahan melalui batu cadas dari ketinggian 15 meter dan lebar 20 meter menyajikan nuansa alam yang khas. Selain pemandangan alam yang indah, air terjun ini juga dimanfaatkan oleh pengunjung untuk kegiatan mandi atau sekadar untuk merasakan percikan sejuk air pegunungan.

Di sekitar air terjun, terdapat cekungan-cekungan sungai yang biasa dimanfaatkan pengunjung untuk berenang. Di sebelah kiri air terjun terdapat jalan wisata dan tempat duduk permanen yang membatasi jalan dengan sungai, terusan dari air terjun. Biasanya pengunjung yang datang sekadar mengabadikan gambar panorama air terjun. Di sebelah kanan air terjun, terdapat areal yang cukup landai untuk berkumpul bersama keluarga dengan menggelar tikar sambil menikmati pemandangan. Pengunjung juga bisa duduk di bawah pepohonan rindang atau mandi di air terjun.

Taman Wisata Alam Bantimurung secara umum bergelombang sampai berbukit-bukit. Batuan kapur membentuk bebukitan terjal di kanan kiri sungai. Daerah datar terletak di bagian selatan, tempat terdapatnya air terjun dan kolam. Daerah datar lainnya yang mempunyai panorama cukup menarik terletak di bagian utara taman wisata alam, dapat ditempuh melalui jalan setapak dari air terjun. Vegetasi yang terdapat di Taman Wisata Alam Bantimurung adalah tipe hutan hujan pegunungan yang didominasi oleh famili Liniaceae, antara lain; jambu hujan (Eugenia sp), jabon (Anthocepalus cadamba), pala-pala (Mangifera sp), enau (Arenga pinnata), centana (Pterocarpus indicus) dan lain-lain.

Selain menikmati pesona air terjun Bantimurung, terdapat objek wisata lain di sekitar kawasan ini yakni goa mimpi dan goa batu. Goa Mimpi merupakan salah satu tempat yang digemari. Di dalam goa terdapat stalaktit (relief batu yang terbentuk dari tetesan air dan menggantung di atas langit-langit goa) indah dengan kumpulan kristal. Bening dan mampu memantulkan cahaya. Di sekelilingnya diterangi lampu sehingga memperindah suasana dalam goa. Inilah yang membuatnya disebut goa mimpi karena ketika berada di dalamnya, kita seakan-akan berada dalam mimpi.

Untuk menuju Goa Batu dibutuhkan stamina yang prima meskipun pengelola sudah membuatkan anak tangga setinggi 10 meter. Perjalanannya cukup jauh dan hanya bisa ditempuh dengan berjalan kaki sekitar 20 menit. Namun setelah tiba, segala kelelahan segera terbayar dengan pemandangan indah serta air terjun kecil yang begitu asri. Belum lagi keindahan di dalam goa dengan stalaktit dan stalagmite sepanjang lorong 30 meter.

Pada 1856 – 1857, Alfred Russel Wallace menghabiskan sebagian hidupnya di Indonesia untuk meneliti berbagai jenis kupu-kupu, termasuk kupu-kupu Bantimurung. Menurut Wallace, Bantimurung merupakan The Kingdom of Butterfly karena ditemukan beragam spesies kupu-kupu langka yang jarang terdapat di daerah lain. Berbagai jenis kupu-kupu yang terdapat di kawasan tersebut antara lain dari family Saturnidae, Nocturnidae, Spingidae dan Nyphalidae. Jenis kupu-kupu tersebut menurut para ahli hanya terdapat di Taman Wisata Alam Bantimurung. Menurut Matimu (1977) dan Achmad (1998) dalam Buku Rencana Pengelolaan Taman Nasional Bantimurung-Bulusaraung (2006), terdapat 103 jenis kupu-kupu yang ditemukan di sana, dan sebaran kupu-kupu jenis komersil seperti Troides haliptron dan Papilio blumei adalah dua jenis endemik yang mempunyai sebaran sangat sempit, yaitu hanya pada habitat berhutan di pinggiran sungai.

Untuk menjaga kupu-kupu dari kepunahan, pemerintah setempat membuat penangkaran di lokasi ini, dan tentunya menjadi daya tarik bagi wisatawan yang berkunjung. Selain penangkaran, ada juga museum kupu-kupu sebagai informasi dan pusat data kupu-kupu yang hidup di alam Bantimurung. Sebelum pulang jangan lupa untuk membeli oleh-oleh kupu-kupu indah Bantimurung yang sudah diawetkan dalam bingkai kaca dengan jumlah variatif. Oleh-oleh ini bisa dipajang di dinding rumah sebagai kenangan dan tanda bahwa Anda sudah mengunjungi “Kerajaan Kupu-Kupu” di Bantimurung.

Ark Hotel dapat mengapung dan timbul secara otomatis di permukaan air.

Tak hanya itu, hotel ini juga tahan gempa, dan bisa didirikan di daerah yang berbahaya secara seismik. Arsiteknya mengklaim, desain yang terdiri dari konstruksi busur dan kabel dengan bantalan bisa mendistribusikan berat secara merata saat terjadi lindu.

Selain itu, struktur bawah tanahnya berbentuk tempurung, tanpa tepian atau sudut. Hotel raksasa yang mengambang ini diklaim juga sebagai 'biosfer', surga yang nyaman bagi para penghuninya, bahkan saat bencana sekalipun.

Desain hotel futuristik ini menggunakan panel matahari dan instalasi pengumpul air hujan, menjamin ketersediaan energi, juga air bagi para penghuninya.

Lingkungan yang mirip rumah kaca juga memungkinkan tanaman tumbuh subur, membantu meningkatkan kualitas udara dan juga menyediakan makanan.

Menurut Alexander Remizov dari Remistudio, ada dua pertimbangan utama dalam desain ini.

"Pertama, meningkatkan pengamanan dan pencegahan terhadap kondisi lingkungan yang ekstrim dan perubahan iklim. Yang kedua adalah melindungi lingkungan alam dari aktivitas manusia," kata dia, seperti dimuat Daily Mail, 10 Januari 2011.

Bahtera ini juga dimaksudkan untuk menjawab tantangan lingkungan global saat ini. Juga untuk mendukung sistem pertahanan hidup.

"Semua tanaman dipilih yang sesuai, efisiensi pencahayaan, dan produksi oksigen. Juga bertujuan untuk menciptakan ruang yang menarik dan nyaman," kata dia.

Remizov menambahkan, atap hotel yang transparan menjamin ada cukup cahaya bagi tanaman dan untuk menerangi interior.

Perancangnya mengklaim, Ark Hotel bisa didirikan hanya dalam waktu beberapa bulan di seluruh bagian dunia. "Bagian-bagiannya bisa disatukan dalam waktu tiga sampai empat bulan," kata Remizov.

Hingga kini hotel ini masih berbentuk rancangan, para arsiteknya sedang mencari investor untuk membuatnya nyata. Selain jadi hotel yang nyaman untuk rehat, Ark Hotel bisa menjelma menjadi lokasi pengungsian di masa depan.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Anyone who has suffered through "Street Fighter," "Super Mario Bros," or the aptly titled "Max Payne" has reason to be wary of "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time." After all, movies inspired by video games have a dubious history. But, if critics are to be believed, the sandal-and-sword epic, based on the series of button-smashing games, is, well, kind of good.
Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly gives the movie a "B" and likes that it unfolds at a "brisk, well-paced clip." Jake Gyllenhaal has the title role, but in Ms. Schwarzbaum's opinion, it's co-star Alfred Molina who shines. The character actor breathes some life and comic relief into the proceedings as a "vibrant wheeler-dealer."

Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune had a similar reaction to Molina's performance, remarking that the veteran of stage and screen is "blessedly exuberant" and "saves the film from itself." His grade: two and a half stars out of four.
The Hollywood Reporter's Ray Bennett also gives the action flick a mostly positive review. Mr. Bennett writes that the film is "entertaining but without substance." Not exactly fawning, but still better than "boring as all get out."
The Los Angeles Times' Betsy Sharkey gives the movie positive marks, praising the visual effects and camerawork. However, Ms. Sharkey writes that Mr. Gyllenhaal "is never quite right." She calls the Oscar nominee too frothy to play such a roguish hero. Perhaps he could have used some acting tips from Indiana Jones.
Roger Ebert didn't much care for the CGI, which includes epic battle scenes and huge sandstorms, because he couldn't tell what was happening. And, as for the star of the show, Ebert writes that Gyllenhaal plays the prince "as if harboring Spider-Man's doubts and insecurities." Fewer soulful glances, and more smirks and scowls.
At least people aren't making fun of Jake's accent. In the film, which also stars British actors Sir Ben Kingsley and Gemma Arterton, Gyllenhaal speaks with a English lilt. According to an interview with USA Today, he was worried about not being able to do it convincingly. Few reviewers are harping on his job -- a sign that he pulled it off.
Finally, online critic James Berardinelli crowns "Prince of Persia" with two and a half out of four stars. He writes that there is "never a dull moment," and the movie as a whole is "eminently watchable." However, for all the flash, "Prince of Persia" is "ultimately pointless." Kind of like a videogame...

Vienna offers a thriving opera scene, a hospitable business environment and a comprehensive public transportation system. Zurich and Geneva take the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively. Switzerland's strong showing on the list is little surprise to Mercer, the global outsourcing and investment consultancy that produces the annual Worldwide Quality of Living Survey.

List: World's 10 Best Places to Live "The Swiss cities are very pleasant, the natural environment is clean, and we weigh heavily the prevalence of hostilities, and Switzerland is neutral," says Rebecca Powers, a Mercer consultant. "If you can't be safe in Switzerland, you can't be safe anywhere."

Vienna beat Zurich by just over half an index point, and less than one point separates the top three cities, making them roughly equal for livability.
"There's probably a little bit more to do in Austria than Switzerland--I would think the symphony is better--but we're splitting hairs between countries," says Powers.
European cities take seven of the top 10 spots for quality of life, thanks to their relative safety, political stability and cultural offerings. As for the U.S., Honolulu, at No. 31, has the best quality-of-life record and the continental U.S. makes its first appearance on the list at 32, with San Francisco tying Adelaide, Australia. Boston came in at No. 37, Chicago and Washington, D.C. tied for 45th place, and New York ranked 49. Philadelphia and Dallas were ranked for the first time this year, landing spots 55 and 61 on the list, respectively.

Behind The Numbers

Mercer ranked 221 global cities on 39 measures, emphasizing political safety and health, but also including factors from restaurant availability to air pollution. Cities are ranked against New York as the base city; it has an index score of 100.
The cities that scored best on Mercer's list had the best safety records and the lowest levels of political upheaval, which helps explain why volatile Baghdad sunk to the last-place spot. While strong infrastructure, cultural amenities and good schools also helped separate the top and bottom cities, most of that was trumped by the importance of local stability.
Although the U.S. didn't do poorly by Mercer's standards--most American cities on the list had index scores above 100--weaker safety records kept them from competing with lower-crime Western European capitals.
"In the U.S., crime is typically more prevalent, and the availability of handguns is an issue," says Powers. "Many of the locations in Canada and Switzerland have a little more of social net that diminishes that kind of crime."
As it was last year, Singapore is Asia's highest-ranking city at No. 28. Tokyo ranked 40, Japanese cities Kobe and Yokohama were tied for 41, and Osaka and Nagoya ranked 51 and 57, respectively. These cities had index scores between 123 and 132.
Some Asian cities held spots near the bottom of the list, as well: Dhaka, Bangladesh; Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and Dushanbe, Tajikistan, took spots 206, 209 and 210 respectively. Political unrest combined with environmental dangers threatened the quality of life in these cities.
"Increasing threats of violence and terrorism, coupled with natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons and cyclones have had a negative impact on the quality of living in Asian cities," says Mercer senior researcher Slagin Parakatil in the report. "This may result in higher hardship allowances for expatriates sent to these countries."
This year Mercer introduced its eco city rankings, published alongside its quality-of-living list, which scores countries on how well they promote sustainability and protect their environments. Calgary, Canada took the top spot and American cities Honolulu and Minneapolis scored in the top 10 on this measure, which factored in the quality of water and air quality, sewage removal and traffic congestion.
While the correlation isn't scientific, many of the cities that ranked highly for quality of life also scored well for ecological responsibility.
"It could be because everything else is running so well, they can afford to think about the environment," says Powers.
International companies watch the Mercer study closely to help determine not just where to set up shop, but how much they should compensate relocating employees whose quality of life may be diminished by a move. For that reason the report ranks many cities in developing countries, where business is increasingly being done but the nuances of lifestyle may remain a mystery.

The tourist areas are in the south, around Sanur Beach and at Kuta, which lies on the other side of a narrow isthmus. Nearby Nusa Dusa is also a popular tourist area and has a number of reasonably priced resorts and hotels.

The island has thousands of temples – the exact number has never been counted – ranging from the great ‘Holy Temple’ at Besakih to small village places of worship. Of the many festivals, most are held twice a year and involve splendid processions, dances and daily offerings of food and flowers made to the gods. Cremations are also held in great style, though their cost is often almost prohibitive for the average Balinese family.

Denpasar is the island’s capital. Sights include the Museum, a new art center and the internationally recognized Konservatori Kerawitan, one of the major centers of Balinese dancing. The Sea Temple of Tanah Lot on the west coast (a short drive from Kediri) is one of the most breathtaking sights of Bali. Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave) near Bedulu is a huge cavern with an entrance carved in a fantastic design of demonical shapes, animals and plants, crowned by a monstrous gargoyle-like head. The Holy Springs of Tampaksiring are believed to possess curative properties and attract thousands of visitors each year. Serangan Island is also known as Turtle Island because of the turtles kept there in special pens. The island lies south of Sanur and can be reached by sail boat or, at low tide, on foot. Every six months, the island becomes the scene of a great thanksgiving ceremony in which tens of thousands take part.

The sacred monkey forest at Sangeh is a forest reserve which, as well as being the home of a variety of exotic apes, also has a temple. Penelokan is a splendid vantage point for views of the black lava streams from Mount Batur. It is also possible to sail across the nearby Lake Batur to Trunyan for a closer look at the crater. North of Kintamani, at an altitude of 1745m (5725ft), lies the highest temple on the island, Penulisan. Pura Besakih, a temple which dates back originally to the 10th century, stands high on the volcanic slopes of Gunung Agung. Nowadays, it is a massive complex of more than 30 temples, and the setting for great ceremonial splendor on festival days. Padangbai is a beautiful tropical coastal village, where lush vegetation backs a curving stretch of white, sandy beach. It is also the island’s port of call for giant cruise liners. Goa Lawah lives up to its name (‘bat cave’ in the local tongue), a safe and holy haven for thousands of bats which line every inch of space on its walls and roof. Non bat-lovers should avoid moonlight strolls in the area, as the animals leave for food sorties at night. Kusambe is a fishing village with a black sand beach. Lake Bratan is reached via a winding road from Budugul. The shimmering cool beauty of the lake and its pine-forested hillsides is an unusual sight in a tropical landscape.
