Maybe it’s because I just finished reading Into the Wild, but If I were to compare garage-punk duo Spaceships sound to say mountains, it would probably be something like the mountains of Mordor—spewing fire and brimstone and appearing all hard and dangerous on the outside, while concurrently possessing an unexplained, irresistible attraction and a warm and gooey inside. Ok, that was a terrible analogy.

Unpretentious and unapologetically raw, listening to Spaceships always leaves me giddy. If you saw their picture and thought, “how cute” don’t worry, there’s nary a pop song nor undistorted note to be heard within a mile of these cats. Singer/guitarist Jessie Waite flits between methodical, almost plodding riffs to manic picking and glissando. Her normally unaffected demeanor will unexpectedly explode in fits of screaming and gesticulating hand gestures (while playing!) like some deep unknown emotion attempting to escape. And, not unlike the more massive of a pair suns in a hypotrochoid dance, the gravity of drummer Kevin LaRose  maintains the natural order and prevents the system from spiraling apart.

We cordially invite you to the first “Service Your Soul” residency show at Harvelle’s Santa Monica this Tuesday, January 8th.  The show starts at 9pm.  Once again, this is a residency that combines good music with all of us helping out the community.

This will be a weekly event, every Tuesday.  Here’s how it works - your cover charge, which you would normally pay anyway, goes to the non-profit 501c3 charities we are working with, Feed Your Soul and the Magic Music Foundation.  You can also bring two non-perishable food items or musical instruments to be donated at the door in lieu of the cover charge.  Additional donations are welcome as well.  All of the proceeds go to feeding the hungry, the homeless, as well as teaching homeless and foster children music.  Recently, Jackson Browne donated two of his guitars to children working with the Magic Music Foundation.

There are 250,000 homeless people in Los Angeles County, by far the most in the United States, and 30,000 alone in Santa Monica.  This is our chance to rise up as a concerned community and help the underprivileged among us.  And while we’re doing that, we’re going to turn it into a blues, soul, and rock and roll jubilee!  So come on out… it’s gonna be a great thing, and we’re all in this together.  This Tuesday, January 8th, 9pm.  We want to see you there!

Free Music and Arts Festival: Venice Beach Music Fest 7

On Saturday, September 8, 2012, the seventh annual VENICE BEACH MUSIC FEST will be a free, full day of live music, art displays, and dance in Windward Plaza Park from 11am – 7:00pm. (Windward Plaza Park is at 1 Windward Avenue, between the boardwalk and the bike trail in Venice, CA, 90291.) The root of the highly successful and locally loved Venice Spring Fling, the VENICE BEACH MUSIC FEST 7 keeps the historical creative spirit of Venice vibrant!

The lineup for the Venice Beach Music Fest 7 starting at 11 AM and ending at 7:00PM will include: Samba Da Mudanca, Cubensis, ATS Bellydance and Drums, Dance Hall Pimps, Ya Harissa Bellydance Theater, Champa 51 , Dylan Chambers and The Midnight Transit, Insects vs Robots, Spiders and Witches, and Lili Haydn. At the recent Venice Spring Fling 2, BARRY “THE FISH” MELTON (Country Joe and The Fish), performed in an all-star band with Michael Hinton, Tony Saunders and drummer Andy Kravitz. “I remember going there as a kid to see the King of the Beat Generation, ‘Big Daddy’ Nord,” says Melton. “Venice was the center of the counterculture in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, and it has maintained a continuing counterculture tradition over all the years of my lifetime. I am delighted to be playing the Spring Fling!”

“Venice has always been a stopping point for great musicians and artists,” says festival producer Milton Rosenberg. “This year’s Venice Beach Music Fest showcases the best of music, art, and dance.” The accompanying art show features paintings, sculpture, and photography from local and international artists Ra Ra SuperStar, Joel Harris, Martha C. Wilson, art by sky, Jean-Paul, Brian Mylius and many others. There is room for additional artists and information for participation is posted at the website at VeniceBeachMusicfest.com.
ATS BELLYDANCE AND DRUMS and YA HARISSA BELLYDANCE THEATER will return this year to intersperse dance sets between musical performances on stage and a parade at with Samba Da Mudança – Samba for Change. We are waiting to confirm a Flightline aerial performance by Alicia Marie of Isis Vision.

Third Eye Tie Dye and Eclectic Hoops will be on display and for sale. Music and art by festival participants can be previewed online by visiting facebook.com/VeniceBeachMusicFest
