Swift performed “Sparks Fly” at several concerts, and since the song was such a hit with fans, the singer decided to put a studio version of it on Speak Now.

The mood changes with “Back to December,” a number full of remorse and regret. Apparently learning from past mistakes in “Back to December,” Swift does not allow love to slip away again in title track “Speak Now,” a cute story with some spoken words and laughs. “Speak Now” talks about breaking up a wedding ceremony, complete with lyrics such as “her snotty little family all dressed in pastel” and “gown shaped like a pastry.”

Although one can accuse Rammstein of its easily not possibly to take seriously could it their saving beauty of also be. I choose to believe the former.

If you aren’t already inclined towards Rammstein’s over-the-top mix of epic, sweeping keyboards, alternately barked and bellowed vocals and thick wall of distorted metal guitar and pounding drums, this album won’t sway your opinion. However, those with an inclination towards this sort of high-grade cheese will find much to enjoy here. No, there’s not much deviation from the formula. It’s Rammstein. You don’t buy an AC/DC album expecting a bunch of Prince covers, do you?

That said, there is the nagging feeling that the joke is wearing thin, that the band’s stylistic hallmarks are starting to feel like a straitjacket. How else to explain that the most memorable song is an English-sung novelty number entitled “Pussy”? Seriously, just listen to this thing. If that’s not a novelty song then my eyebrows are earwigs. It’s also the catchiest song on the album by some distance.

This is not to suggest that the whole album plays like distortion-drenched wallpaper. Bückstabü, for example, has a sleazy shuffle beat and a slithery, half-whispered whine of a vocal to distinguish it. Most of the stylistic detours are minor, though, and perhaps it’s for the best. Rammstein clearly understand their place in the music world, and from the sound of things, they’re still having loads of fun with it.

Along with the liner notes, the 48 page book features unseen contact sheets from the album photo session and a chronology of contemporaneous quotes by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy that illuminate the status of the band at that point in their career. 45 tracks. The Cult's 1984 debut, DREAMTIME, proved to be an intriguing, if sometimes muddled, combination of early U2 and the Doors, topped off with Ian Astbury's ongoing lyrical fascination with Native American mythology. The immediate follow-up, LOVE, was a notable improvement. Ditching the most overt Doors references in favor of moody neo-psychedelia that sounds like a harder-rocking version of Echo & the Bunnymen, LOVE includes "She Sells Sanctuary" and "Rain." These driving singles introduced the UK band to the American college-radio market and laid the foundation for the group's mainstream commercial breakthrough later in the decade. The rest of the album is nearly up to the level of the singles, with Astbury's less-mannered vocals and Billy Duffy's powerful guitar riffs offering a much more assertive musical presence than ever before.

Timothy B. Schmit launched his solo career late — in 1984, after the Eagles disbanded and right in the thick of the era of shiny, synthesized production. Schmit released three solo albums, all big and glossy, between 1984 and 1991, then reunited with the Eagles in 1994, so he never quite had a chance to record an album as relaxed and natural as 2009's Expando. Ditching all the sheen, but not the professional panache, that lingered all the way to 2001's Feed the Fire, Schmit returns to his country and folk-rock roots here, creating a record that has a clear through-line from his early days with Poco, bears echoes of early Crosby, Stills & Nash — a resemblance underscored by Graham Nash's occasional guest harmonies and the howling harmonica on "A Good Day" — and clearly is the work of the soft rock songsmith behind "I Can't Tell You Why." As beguiling as this record sounds — it's soft and warm without feeling slick, anchored in acoustic guitars and graced with sweet harmonies, peaking with the appearance of the Blind Boys of Alabama on "Secular Praise" — what resonates is his strongest-ever collection of songs, songs that are tuneful, knowing, reflective, and occasionally funny, as on his tongue-and-cheek blues-rocker "White Boy from Sacramento," a showcase for his guitarist son Ben. This loud slice of satire is the exception to the rule on Expando, but this soft rock never feels lazy or complacent; it's rich and lived-in, a record that might have been a long time in coming but is certainly worth the wait.

Kings Of Leon - Only By The Night CD (2008)

With their raw, organic sound, Tennessee's Kings of Leon emerged in 2003 as Southern rock for the indie-garage set, sort of a Strokes for the South. While there were hints of a new direction on their third album, BECAUSE OF THE TIMES, its follow-up, ONLY BY THE NIGHT, follows through with a near-reinvention of the Kings' sound. ONLY BY THE NIGHT could be mistaken for avant-indie cult heroes the Liars on a Southern vacation, as post-punk angularity, distorto-funk bass lines, and clattering percussion are processed through what sounds like the world's biggest fuzzbox. While there are old-glory moments of garagey abandon, most of these tracks sound like someone sat and carefully considered the best way to frame them. And that's the difference between making a good album and making a great one.

The first full-length collection of new studio recordings from eight-time Grammy award winner Barbra Streisand since 2005's Guilty Pleasures. Love Is The Answer showcases the artist as a singer of emotional clarity, depth and maturity, offering the listener a selection of heartfelt late-night meditations on love's powers, heartbreaks and solaces. It provides an opportunity for Streisand to work for the first time with the Grammy-winning Canadian jazz artist Diana Krall and her quartet (piano, guitar, bass, drums) who bring a refined and sensual poignancy to the album's sophisticated and subtle accompaniments.

In a year filled with them, Rhino offers its own homage to Woodstock's 40th anniversary by rolling out this lavish six-CD box set. Perhaps the most significant aspect of this set is that it contains tracks by almost every single artist who appeared ... Full Descriptionon the Woodstock stage in their proper sequence. We also hear from artists such as Sweetwater, Tim Hardin, Johnny Winter, Mountain, Ravi Shankar, Quill, the Incredible String Band, the Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Joe Cocker, and Blood, Sweat & Tears, and, of course, stage announcements by Chip Monck, John Morris, and Wavy Gravy.

The producers researched the original set lists exhaustively and present them here along with the music and their choices. The sound, which was done by Eddie Kramer, is as good as it can possibly get. The book is a monster, loaded with photos and featuring Bud Scoppa's wonderfully researched and presented liner essay, whose chapters account for each day, act by act.

Ultimately, however, it all comes down to the music. While we only get "Dark Star" by the Dead, we get (a bit) more music from the Who. The three tracks by CCR are all monsters, and hearing the five tracks by Crosby, Stills & Nash and then Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young all in correct sequence between BS&T and the Butterfield Blues Band is a treat.

Alice In Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue CD (2009)

When Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002, it had already been several years since most Alice in Chains fans stopped hoping for a new album. The singer had become a recluse since the late-`90s, and there was little indication that AIC would ever again produce much in the way of new music. As a result, when the remaining members reunited to release BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE in 2009, expectations were low. To the delight of all however, the album proved to be perhaps the Seattle combo's most energetic and consistent effort since its masterpiece DIRT. Perhaps the most surprising element of the new record was how much it sounded exactly like Alice in Chains. While new singer William DuVall was not an exact Staley soundalike, he managed to evoke both the unique timbre and sense of deep angst that were the late vocalist's trademarks. Throughout, the sound is heavier and sturdier than ever before, with songs like the first single "A Looking In View" and "Check My Brain" borrowing a bit from the nu-metal bands Alice in Chains inspired, and beating the upstarts at their own game.

Robben Ford - Soul On Ten CD songs (2009)

Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better ... Full Descriptionmaterial from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. He kicks off the set with a lazy, wah-wah enhanced "Supernatural," the title track to his 1999 disc, and revs up the energy from there, jumping into the instrumental "Indianola." This is where Ford seamlessly combines rock, blues, jazz, and surf into a five-minute tour de force, leading one to believe that a vocal-free show might display his superb guitar talents even better.
