Honestly I think that homegroup worship is more about attitude and heart than it is about skill or song choice. However, most homegroup worship is someone playing a guitar and singing and trying to either replicate their worship idol or trying to replicate the sunday services. Both are wrong approaches.

People need to recognise that they have their own style, and every situation has it's own appropriate choice of worship as well.

Also, I totally agree with the "nowhere to hide" thing. Worship (whatever anybody else says) is both a corporate and personal activity - everybody has to participate or it's just singing to someone trying not to be self-conscious whilst worshipping.

Thank you for your tips. I seem to be hearing about the place the case for making things simple, and am a bit concerned that it will be accepted as the 'spiritual' way of doing things. Another thought is that the band may be able to stretch themselves a bit if asked and often the more complicated chords have been included by the author because they are enriching. This aspect of worship also needs to be aired.
