I count it an absolute honour to be asked to write for Music Goat, which has been a great source of information on indie artists and the side of the music industry that isn’t often talked about. The Goat has asked me to provide a bit of a background about me, and what I do before I start the whole blogging process. So here goes.

Twelve months ago we started a record label – which is rather ironic since we release everything digitally or on cd! On starting the label, we asked ourselves what we would want if we were artists. The number 1 answer was – To Own Our Music. Not give the rights to our music away.

A big inspiration to our company setup was Terry McBride of Nettwerk Music in Canada. His philosophies answer the question of Copyright Control that we posed so we decided to run with the model that has been so effective for Terry. Cowbell Digital Music was born and the big point of difference was Collapsible Copyright (artists owning their music).

Everything about the label was different. Focus on digital, multiple service agreements and helping artists connect with fans by encouraging the use of social networking.

Another major point to our label has been the establishment of Cowbell China. As of last month, we are the first independent label to be officially on the ground in China with an office in Shandong province and the support of an official government run website. No other indie label has managed to get to this point so we consider it a privilege to be able to take our artists into China.

With all the massive leaps that we are taking as a label, we are also establishing a second platform to help new emerging artists find a voice. With a focus on the music community it totality, it will cover all genres, all styles and give artists a sense of belonging while also allowing an artist’s growing fan base to buy their music at a price set by the artist.

So please keep an eye out for my posts as I shed a bit of light on what is happening in the industry and maybe even provide a few options for the struggling artist in all of us.

Your music is very unique, who are your biggest influences?

I’m influenced by so many great composers and performers. From the classic jazz composers like Cole Porter and George Gershwin, to jazz singers like Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, to more contemporary pop/composers like Sting, Annie Lennox, Bjork, and Portishead. I can appreciate the trendy, the quirky, all the fluff de jour.

You have toured all over  the world. What has been your favorite place so far and why?

Ah! I can’t play favorites like that. Every place I’ve performed has been special and precious in its own way. People do seem warmer personality-wise in warmer climates. And I’ve never had a problem with anyone being snobbish. The French were so sweet and very friendly. The most friendly people might be the Egyptians. Lebanese people are amazing given their history of wars and destruction. They’re so brave and proud and they sure know how to enjoy life!

Did you grow up studying music?

Well, I never really grew up–but that’s a story for another time. I took some piano lessons  in grade school, but I was undisciplined and just wanted to make up my own melodies. Then I took some free guitar lessons in the 7th grade and really started to use the guitar to write songs. Later, another musician friend of mine suggested that I get away from the guitar when I was writing songs because the guitar was more of a crutch than a tool for me.

I wasn’t a very good guitarist, and the limited vocabulary I had in guitar chords was keeping my melody in a pretty tight frame. I did find that if I wrote a melody without the aid of the guitar first, I’d write much more creative songs. I was freed. This is how I write now, without the use of any instruments first. Then I go to the piano and write charts for my musicians.

What charities or organizations do you affiliate yourself with?

I’m a member of We Are Change LA, The Hollywood Freedom Activists and Code Pink: Women for Peace. I’m a big fan of Anti-war.com and the Iraq Veterans Against the War, too. A percentage of the proceeds from all my records sales as well as my shows always go to wonderful charity called, Mercy Corps or to Code Pink.

Your album has a lot of instrumentation, which ones do you play?

I sang all the vocals except that very deep “Dance!” on “Dance Between the Raindrops” which was my engineer, John X. I programmed all the virtual drums and played all the virtual (as in synth) bass, keys and strings, and I played the acoustic guitar on “Drowning” and “Just for Fun.” And of course, I played the dog toy on “Cigarette.”

Who is you favorite person that you have worked with so far?

The dog toy. Oh, you said “person” I love them all, of course! Well I have to say I really loved working with the late, great Jamie Tisdale, who played guitar on “Save Yourself.” He really understood what I was going for with that cut and he put all of his creative energy and his passion into that performance, as he did with everything he did. His talents will be missed, always.

What is the best prank you ever played?

That would have to be the prank I played on my little brother when we were kids. My sister and I were a few years older than him and he was always trying to get us in trouble, so we decided to try something…

I pretended to call him a “swear word” that we’d agreed on previously that was just a made up word. I told her I’d call him a “little blanchard” and then my sister would act really shocked that I’d used a bad word. When it happened, he went to tell my Dad. Of course, he was  confused  and then amused. My little brother was so embarrassed. We thought it was hilarious at the time.

You’re new album is called Can U Handle This? do you feel that you are difficult to handle?

Sometimes, yes! hahaha!!! Sometimes, what I say can shock people, or make them feel a lil bit uncomfortable, cause the truth can sometimes be a lil uncomfortable I like to point out the big pink elephant that’s standing right there in the room, that some like to ignore just because it’s comfortable to ignore it. I like to bring up the taboo

But the title Can U Handle This?!!! on the album is more of a can u handle this in the music industry?! Someone like me, the underdog, with all odds against her. Not only do I have a big mouth, but I’m a female rapper, I’m white AND I’m an alien!!! So can u handle that record industry? Executives, investors, movers ‘n shakers… cause I don’t think u can! hahaha!!! If u can–then prove it! Otherwise I’ll move ‘n shake it up myself hahaha! Those I do think can handle it is the people in the audience

Explain to us the difference between Marlen and Malicious?

Marlen is me, the nice girl. Malicious is me, the bitch!!! hahaha!!! No, from joke to real, Malicious is the truth. The harsh truth.Truth can be mean or malicious because it’s sometimes too hard to handle. ’N it lurks underneath the surface of the facade we put up.

Not a lot of people like to face their real truths. So they escape… into drugs, alcohol, sex, work, addictions… u name it! Or just cut off on their emotions ‘n feelings cause their too hard to deal with. Malicious steps in when I wanna remind myself or people not to see things in just one way, but many. Remember that there are many sides to one case, that the so-called reality u see might not be the real reality.

How has being an artist in Norway different from being an artist in the US?

In Norway u have this unwritten law that u shouldn’t think u’r good for anything or better than anybody or think u’r special or nothing, etc. It’s called the jantelaaven in good old Norwegian. And I think that’s a bunch of BS! In America u don’t even have a word for that law!!! ‘N that’s good! That’s probably why it don’t exist here! Thank God!!!

Of course we all are special in our own way! Of course u should think u can become great!!! WTF?!?! Who ever came up with that law is a conservative bastard that had A LOT of fear crystallized in his head!

Here in America I’ve been treated so much better!!! There is bigger acceptance here. But I love my country dearly, don’t get me wrong. It has a lot of good sides too. All places do.

Who do you most look up to in the music industry?

Hm… there’s a lot of talented people I really like. A lot of music that has helped me through the hard times ‘n cheered me up in the good times… The one thing that may be one of the reasons why I moved to LA in the first place was west coast gangster rap!!! hahaha! Dr. Dre, NWA, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube! I love Dr. Dre ‘n how he produces songs. Love everything he touches!

I also love Timbaland. His beats r off the hook. I listened a lot to TLC, Missy Elliot, Bob Marley, M.J. Blige and SWA growing up. Nowadays, I listen to almost everything out there. Gotta love Drake

I also love Beyonce!!! How much more successful can u be girl?! Awesome! Let’s see u go there! What a voice! Also,Pink! Twista! Ludacris! T.I! Even some Lady GaGa-nest!

Pink btw, has my album now YeaY! I ran into her ‘n gave it to her. She was such a sweetheart!!! Beautiful girl So nice! ‘N she seemed really interested in my album too, what if she is drivin’ around bangin’ my tunes in her car right now!!! hahaha!!! How sick would that be?!

On the back of your album is a photo of you burning down a house, have you ever been arrested for arson in the past?

A good criminal never gets caught, don’t u know that?! hahaha! No, just kiddin’! No, thank hell, not been arrested for arson before

After experiencing the Indie Bible from a blogger/podcaster perspective for a few years now, I  laid down the cash and read it as a musician who’s looking to promote his music.

I have been digesting this bad boy for about a few months now and I can’t believe the info in here. For the indie artist, the Indie Bible is the Swiss Army knife of music promotion. In other words, it is pretty damn handy!

The book is a great resource which provides over 9000 resources in a variety of ways: Radio Stations, journalists, labels, publicists, managers as well as providing a healthy dose of articles from industry guru’s to help you use the resources to the best advantage.

Here’s the breakdown.

The whole thing is divided up by genre, label, radio, publication, region, etc. This is a huge time saver. You are able to really hone in on your the resources that are specific to both your style of music and region of promotion. You do not have to spend hours sifting through a ton of non-related info to find the resources you need to tap.

Info packed articles by indie music guru publicist Ariel Hyatt, CDBaby founder Derek Sivers, and many more. It makes no sense having all this publicity if you don’t know how to use it.

The cover topics like “How To Submit Music For Review”, “How To Be your Own Publicist”, “Band And Press Kit Essentials”, “Building A Music Site That Sells: Promote Your CD Not Yourself” (one of my favorite), and on and on. This information alone is worth the price of admission.

Even the Ads Are Helpful…

The Indie Bible does does a great job of putting together ads that compliment the rest of the content and serve the ultimate purpose of the book – providing a thorough and helpful resource for indie artists. No booze or or get rich quick ads in these pages.

Things I Would Do Different…

Only thing I would change is I would probably order the hard-copy in the mail. When in digital format, the resource is almost too big and hard to use as a reference. If you can wait for a few days and are willing to fork over a couple dollars extra for shipping, I would recommend going this route.

Also, every year there are resources added. If you want your copy of the indie Bible to stay current by getting the yearly updates, you will need to purchase the update packages ahead of time (It is too bad that these are not offered for free but they are worth it).

As a Blogger/Podcaster…

From a Bloggers/Podcasters perspective I can tell you that the Indie Bible works as advertised. I get tons of email and tons of snail mail from artists, record labels and publicists – in many different genres – all over the world. Obviously every artist doesn’t get covered but each and every one gets fair shot at coverage AND has direct access to me in order to follow up or establish a relationship.

So there you have it, a quick and dirty review of the Indie Bible. I highly recommend you get yourself a copy if you are serious about getting the word out about your music. There is no way in hell you would be able to assemble all of this info on your own – you’d be nuts for trying. Besides, you have better things to do with your time, like write and play music.

What has been the most monumental point in your career so far?

Playing live and having people whom I’ve never met, know my music; Selling out the Viper Room; Recording at Motown Studios where greats like Ray Charles recorded; Flying to New York and playing a show at Sin-E; Seeing 1000 of my first EP in my hands; Recording and licensing a pixies song; Playing live on college radio, there have been so many.

Who are you influences?

I really like 80’s new wave and Joy Division. U2’s early stuff really stuck with me because of the emotion. Jeff Buckley (althought I’ve only started to listen to him recently), the Killers, David Bowie, Weezer, Radiohead, the Pixies. At one point, I also listened to Billy Joel, Kenny Rogers, some opera, Guns and Roses, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi.

I grew up listening to mainstream radio so most commercial music of the 80’s and 90’s has seeped into my  music. In the end, what I’ve learned from this random melange of music is: I like big and emotional choruses that could be sung by hundreds of screaming fans with a twist of the unusual musical change in there.

At what point in your life did you decide to make music a career?

When I got tired of hearing the same stuff on the radio, about five years ago. I had just moved to LA and I was regularly going to open mics. People started to really respond to my music and suggested that I record it. So I did, and after a year, I got a band together and recorded my first EP Auto Repair at the old Motown Records Hollywood Studio. We were playing and I realized I could really do this as a profession.

What song do you most like to play live?

“Matter of Time” because it makes me want to dance.

You have already accomplished a lot this year including being nominated for an LA music award as well as being featured on Music Connection’s top 100 hottest unsigned artists list. What do you think is in store for the future?

Well, I’m sure the hard work is only just beginning. Hopefully I’ll be able to get an opening spot for some established bands. I’ve learned to never plan too far ahead but in the short term, I just finished my music video for “Erase This From Our Blood” (which you can see on my MySpace page at www.MySpace.com/PaulNagi79) and I am putting the finishing touches on my new single “Quite Gorgeous.” It’s a sort of a Franz Ferdinand meets the Strokes and the Doors.  It’s a dancy and fun song.

Describe your most memorable show moment?

Playing to a packed at the Viper Room and almost no one turned to the bar to buy a drink during one of my slow songs “Always On My Mind.” They were all just staring at me almost mesmerized.

How do you feel about the changing state of the music industry?

You gotta roll with it. Everything changes, you just need to be flexible. If artists are smart, they realize that they hold the power, if they are willing to sweat and bleed. With that said, record labels are still very important. It’s like a tree with heavy branches. If the weight from the limbs gets too far away from the trunk, then the limbs fall off.I think that’s what happened to the record labels. Labels have lost a lot of their dominance and have spread too far from their original purpose. The strongest part still remains, but it will be some time before the labels get back to their previous form, if they ever do.

Your EP is called Auto Repair how many cars broke down on you before you decided to name your EP that?

It is short for autonomous repair. It refers to the idea that the body heals itself from all the damage that you do to it, psychological and physical, and your heart is at the center of that process. I wanted to call my band that, but most of the guys i play with told me that everyone would ask the question that you just asked. That stuff never bothered me. I think people who listen to my music are smarter and look for a deeper meaning.

How is being a musician in the United States different from being a musician in Austria?

The main difference is the amount of opportunities. I always say “For every single opportunity in Austria, you get a thousand in the States.” Austria is a country with a great classical music background, and all the world-famous classical musicians come to Austria.

In contemporary music, you reach a plateau pretty quickly and there is no where to go, especially if you are doing original music. Another difference is that Americans are a lot more excitable and supportive when it comes to music and new ideas.

Your Kingtom ideology is very unique, can you tell us what it is?

The Kingtom is my universe in space—my kingdom of high-energy pop music. It consists of six planets brought together by and gravitating toward logical center, LOVE. I call this center the ‘Great Uniting Star’. I invite my audience to enter my universe and through my music, experience  the power of freedom, excitement, beauty, passion, joy, peace and love.

Which element of the Kingtom is the most important to you?

The Great Uniting Star because it is an expression for what I stand for as an artist. I believe that music has the great potential to unite people and bring out love, excitement and happiness in them. This is why I chose the yin yang at the center of my logo that is partially rotated to form a heart. This powerful body then sparks a fire, which reflects the passion I have for music, generating a majestic light and energy needed to keep my universe in rhythm and the audience dancing.

Who are your musical influences?

My two role models that I adore musically are Michael Jackson and Prince. Both are phenomenal entertainers and performers, who in my perception, have always focused on the artistry and music rather than on making money.

Do you have a musical family?

I must have inherited my creative side from my mum because my dad is a businessman. I have played music and have been on stage pretty much all my life. At the age of four, I got my first drum set and started playing drums. At the age of nine, I had become a child actor for  theatre, and in high school, I joined a ballroom band as a singer and toured all over Austria.

You are a very high energy entertainer, have you studied dance or theatre?

I have never studied dance or theatre, but as I mentioned above, being a child actor made me failiar with the at age at a young age. I haven’t abandoned the stage since and probably never will. I guess my high-energy nature comes from my passion for what I am doing. On top of that, I love to dance. so you will rarely see me stand still when you watch me perform.

Tell me what your newest release is going to be about.

I tried to incorporate different elements of my personality into the songs. “The King Lives On” is about spreading my message to the world. In “One Nite Stand” I show that I am not afraid to  show my feminine side. “Do You Believe” portrays my theatrical side in which I am seducing a girl to join my Kingtom. “In the Dark” is an intimate ballad about feelings that have been left in the dark for a long time, and finally “Make It Loud” is a straight up feel good rock tune.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Madison Square Garden in New York City. That place is magical. And the big soccer stadium in Vienna, Austria, because it is always great to come home.

Your stage performance is very theatrical, what do you plan on doing on stage for this new album?

The stage show will be a spectacle. A blend between a traditional show and a musical, with dancers, animation, and explosions. When the beat fires up, I’m in the zone and hopefully my audience will join me on this ride.

You are both an actress and a musician, which role do you like playing best?

I really love acting and have been lucky enough to work on some great roles, but music has been on my mind more lately. I really need a creative life and the hard part about being an actor is you can’t just “act” whenever you feel like it, other people have to cast you. With music, if you are compelled to write a song in the middle of the night or play guitar or sing…you can just do it. You may not have control over who eventually hears it or cares about it, but the part you do for yourself is almost always available to you.

What song on We Sail is most personal to you?

I would have to say “The Sun Came Up Today” because it is a sentiment that I have faced fairly often in my life. My mother died when I was in my mid-twenties and my father died 9 years ago. Over the years, many of my friends have died too. When a close friend’s father died a couple of years ago, I was so sad about it and concerned for him and his family. I was deeply in the space of knowing what it is like when someone you love dies—you can’t believe that the whole world is just going on as if nothing has happened when your life is completely changed. I wrote “The Sun Came Up Today” for my friend, but it came from my personal experiences.

How did you get involved with writing music for Groundlings Comedy and Improv Company?

The Groundlings is a company that you find yourself in after rising through the many levels of the school.  In The Groundlings everyone writes their material and performs in pieces other people write. Each show usually needs some musical pieces too, for variety and entertainment value, so I often wrote something for those occasions. I wrote mock musicals about various scandals and newsworthy events etc. I once did a musical playing Martha Stewart in embroidered Denim shirt and fishnets for example. That was long enough ago, the director of the show at that time actually said that she didn’t think enough people knew who Martha Stewart was.

I wrote a lot of songs into my character bits when they were appropriate and I did a lot of improvisation. It was really fun and was kind of a breakthrough for me in terms of singing for an audience. When the audience labels you as an “opera singer” or a “country singer” and you have to not only instantly sing like one, but make up the song at the same time, that is truly a good time.

What has been your favorite role that you’ve played as an actress?

As far as television is concerned, I had a pretty fantastic part on Six Feet Under which was especially fun because I was one of the opening death sequences. On stage, I’ve played some really nice parts. I loved playing Brooke in Noises Off which was a really funny role and I did a play called And a Nightingale Sang playing the main character Helen, which I really loved.

What are your biggest song inspirations?

Ever since I was a teenager, my way of coping with my feelings was to write songs about them. I wrote a song to sing to my husband at our wedding; I wrote lullabies when my babies cried; I wrote a song when I caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror and didn’t know who the hell it was. It is how I cope with things, good and bad. Everyday kind of things that everyone experiences are primarily what I write about. Of course, sometimes I just write a song because I get a funny idea in my head.

Who is your greatest musical influence?

I have thought a lot about this and if I had to pick only one, I would have to say Joni Mitchell. When I was young I wore her albums out playing them and I think every songwriter today is indebted to her.

Since your album is called We Sail, where would you sail to and who would you go with?

I use sailing as a metaphor of course, and given that, I guess I am happiest voyaging through life with my beautiful family. I love to travel, but the people I want by my side the most are right here in my home. I guess I live in a houseboat after all.

What is the origin of the band name Edison Sunrise?

I came up with the name “Edison Sunrise” after hanging out in a friend’s basement. His father had an old Thomas Edison record player, that played some of the first ever recorded music.  I was very impressed by the antique record player because it doesn’t need electricity to play. You simply wind it up and it plays the music on the record. Someone mentioned that The Edisons would be a good band name. I had never been interested in being a “The” band so I used my wits and put together Edison Sunrise.

Who are some of your greatest musical influences?

Some of my favorite artists are Blind Melon, Bob Dylan and Oasis. They all have their unique style and sound and they all genius songwriters. I rely heavily on my songwriting to get me ahead and open up doors.

You are about to release a new EP, what song are you most excited to play live?

The third song on my EP called “Life Forms” is always fun to play whether in practice or in a show. The song is short, catchy and packed full of energy. It is the perfect song to play if you want to leave the audience wanting more.

What is the Edison Sunrise songwriting process like?

It tends to not take that long at all for me to write a full song. I tend to drop a song if I am struggling to write it. I have always felt my best work flow through me with ease when I am “in the zone.” I have stuck with this formula and I have managed to write over 40 originals thus far.

What are the main themes or topics that influence your songs?

Society and equality is a big one for me. I am a free spirit and I try to encourage people to think outside of the box and not judge people.

I like to sing about the dangers and shadiness in the world. The world isn’t all butterflies and beautiful flowers you know! There is evil at work.

I write about friends and memories. I can’t forget about all the good times and friends I have made along the way. Everyone needs a song to remind them of the people in their life.

How has your music evolved since you first started playing?

Being able to write lots of songs in a short amount of time has given me an edge. I have written everything from country roots to heavy rock and hip hop. I am constantly changing. One of the most compliments I get it that all my songs are different from one another and I have a unique sound.

What’s the best part about being a musician in Canada?

I currently live in a beautiful mountain town, Banff AB.It is vast and inspiring and people their really dig their music.

What are you looking forward to in 2010?

Having an EP for sale worldwide through digital download and having a much more experienced mindset. I have been learning and working hard at getting better at my craft. I feel that in 2010 I will finally start getting the recognition I have been working toward.

The chemistry between the two of you is undeniable, how did you meet and what made you start performing together?

I wrote a song called “Redrum” and I really wanted a female to sing the chorus I had written, and then, what do you know? With the snap of a finger, I was introduced to a cute, vivacious Puerto Rican girl with amazing vocals that went by the name of Josy B. Shortly  after the recording, I realized our chemistry was so magnetic and decided to release the song as our first single, which did great overseas, and we continued to work together from that point on

What is the first song you ever wrote together?

Tak, you’ve been in the game a long time with groups like Styles of Beyond and Fort Minor, how is RIBKAT AND JOSY B. different?

For starters, I’ve never done an entire project with a female. Another is I got a chance to reinvent myself and showcase my music production and songwriting ability in a way the fans have never heard or would ever expect. Our sound is more electro-pop tip with a fusion of 80’s music and early 90’s Hip Hop in it’s prime. I never considered myself to be a rapper for the most part, but more of a songwriter who was always intrigued by the art of storytelling, with the soul of a musician.

Josy B., you’ve had the opportunity to work with the legendary Dr. Dre, tell us about the experience.

It was an awesome opportunity and a great learning experience. At the time, Dre was doing the soundtrack for a movie called El Diablo and we worked together to write some lyrics in Spanish for a track that was used for one of the scenes. The song turned out great! He was a really fun and down-to-earth guy and it was an honor to have worked with the Dr.

Josy B., you seem to love fashion, does your style influence your music and stage persona?

Fashion is my love!!! I’m addicted to accessories and colorful bags. What I wear is who I am which has a lot of influence not only with the music that I do but on stage as well. I don’t try to think too hard about what I’m going to wear when I perform. I’m very versatile with my visions and mood and sometimes I throw something together spontaneously, so you never know what I may be wearing when I come out!

Your new album Theory of Addicts was just released, what tracks are you most excited to perform live?

To be honest, we get excited to perform all of our songs because we love our album! We don’t use profanity in any way and we strongly believe in unifying a nation of people young and elderly through a positive medium of enjoyable music with an innovative energy behind it.

If you could collaborate with any other artist/s who would it be?

A man-made android combining the DNA of Culture Club, Talking Heads, Human League, Huey and the News, Tears for Fears, Public Enemy, Tribe Called Quest, LL Cool J., Leaders of the New School, with a splash of Michael Jackson.

What’s the game plan for 2010?

To infect the world with a plague called “Good Honest Music”

I love Emanuela because she has a lot of talent and shows so much promise. She wrote all the songs on her EP (except for Arethra Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way”) and her first language isn’t even English! What she is unable to convey with words, she is able to communicate with her spirited vocals. And boy, does she ever. I think that is where her greatest strength lies. Her dynamic range, and at times raspy vocals accentuate simple lyrics and remind us that when it comes to things like heartbreak, sometimes words just don’t cut it.

On Rain and Sunshine of Heart, Emanuela also sings beautifully in Italian. “Stai Con Me” has a vulnerability and sweetness to it that is absent on the rest of the album. Just when you think that all this girl can do is sing at the top her lungs, she reveals a warmer and softer tone. The song’s feel is completely different from its English counterpart and the rest of the EP.  I think it’s one of the EP’s highlights, even if you can’t speak Italian.

Emanuela also covers Arethra’s “Ain’t No Way” and the result is a good mix of Emanuela’s emotional range. Some of the song even gives me chills. Emanuela is incredibly dynamic and when she taps into this talent, she has the ability to convey emotions as they truly are–complex and changing.

Today, I wanted to share a post with you from a blog I’ve been checking in on lately. The blog is Slowcoustic and they recently did a post which points to another post from a blog called ClickTicket. These posts list what they feel are the Top Twenty Music Review Blogs.

I figured some of you might be looking for a little more in music review department, because, as I’ve admitted in my latest podcast, I am not the most frequent blogger on the planet. (note: the fact that 500+ of you stick around points to the fact that I am possibly the luckiest music blogger on that same planet).

Oh and if you’re wondering why I am sharing the Slowcoustic version of the story – rather than serving it up straight from the ClickTicket tap – it is because I think Slowcoustic’s version gives you a little insight as to what kind a blog Slowcoustic is (since they were on the list themselves).

Its like watching an awards show, many times I think it is more interesting to hear how the artist goes about accepting an award than it is to hear the announcement itself (does that make sense?). I think you will be left with the same impression I was left with, Slowcoustic is appreciative, humble and not afraid to prop up fellow blogs. In other words, good people!

One last thing, without knowing fore sure what the criteria for this top 20 list are, I figured I’d throw in a few that I would consider in mine. If you are into hard rock and metal check out  Hard Rock Hideout and Rock My Monkey are both very solid.

Allow me introduce you to an album that has been in my regular rotation the last few months by the name of Being Awesome. Being Awesome is the first full-length release from Amy Heffernan.

What I love about Amy Heffernan is that she makes pop music that I can admit to liking without feeling ashamed or embarrassed. The whole album is addicting guitar-driven pop and great for singing along to without making you feel as if it was made for a teenager.

From the first banjo lick on “Being Awesome” you can tell the album is going to be fun. The song has some true to life lyrics like “take my keys, cuz later you’ll be driving my drunk ass home” and “if I looked any hotter, I’d be hooking up with your boyfriend.” No doubt, if you enjoy drunken debauchery you can relate to what Amy is talking about. The other great album on the album is “Can’t Wait.” It is an ode to summer and the perfect song to play when you’re driving to the beach.

But Being Awesome is not just about the awesome times, it also has its fair share of love songs and break-up songs. What I like most about said songs is that Amy never plays the lovesick victim. Listen to “The Word” and you’ll know what I’m talking about. You can tell the song came from a person that is far from a first crush and capable of feeling real pain.

What also makes its way onto the album is a cover of Lady GaGa’s “Just Dance” only the song is guitar-driven instead. If Lady GaGa isn’t your style, but the catchy melody has gotten into your head, play this version and satisfy your craving. I think you’ll like it better.

Being Awesome is a standout album because it is one that the rest of us can relate to. Amy serves up real emotions from a mature perspective with a rich musical backdrop. Plus, she doesn’t take herself too seriously, what more do you want?

What each of us – Joe, Gregg and I – did was picked a few selection  and then tell a story about each (which generated some good, meaty discussion as well).

Rythms Del Mundo - Classics

What do you get when you throw classic rock, salsa music and artists like Jack Johnson, The Killers, John Mayer, Amy Winehouse, The Stones and Fall Out Boy – to name a few – into a giant blender? You get Rhythm Del Mundo’s “Classics” of course.

The compilation is a charity release with all of the proceeds going to a charity by the name of Artists Project Earth (APE). Overall it is pretty interesting listen. Here are my thoughts as I go track to track – skipping a few here and there.

The Killer start the whole thing off with an oddly upbeat version of “Hotel California”. Overall I think it is a decent tune but salsa seems to suck out some of the songs darkness a bit which – in my humble opinion – contradicts the lyrics.

Not sure what to say about the Amy Winehouse “Cupid” tune. Almost sounds like she is slurring the words a bit (could it be because…nah, I’m not going there).

Jack Johnson does John Lennon’s “Imagine” and it sounds like…well…Jack Johnson singing “Imagine”.

There is very loungy, and unexplainably appealing version of The Velvet Undergrounds “Walk on the Wild Side” by someone called the Editors.

The OneRepublic version of “For What It’s Worth” is way groovy but kinda like the “Hotel California” it almost looses to much of its emotional weight. The original has such a gripping, eye opening message whereas the cover almost trivializes the message.

Fall Out Boy and John Mayer mellow out the King of Pops “Beat It” and I like the laid back “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Shanade.

There are a few more tunes on the compilation – 19 total – including a very spanish”Stairway to Heaven”.

Overall, it is fun checking out all of these tune, especially for cover geeks – like myself. It always fascinates me to hear how artists interpret other artists stuff. I may have been pretty judgmental on a few tunes but the bottom line is, it doesn’t matter what I think. I applaud every artist that steps up to the mic and takes a shot. When I learn a cover tune that I want to perform, I put a lot of thought into making sure I make it my own if at all possible because in the words of Lionel Richie  in one of my all time favorite tunes “Easy”, “I ain’t happy when I try to fake it.” And I’m sure most artists would agree.

When most artists and musicians dream about becoming stars they think of private planes, big houses, lots of bling (wow, did I just say bling?), hordes of willing groupies and pretty much anything else described in that Nickelback tune. But, after giving it some serious thought, I think that that kind of thinking is a little shortsighted and may be completely off base. I think that there is something that would be a lot better.

One of my favorite all time music related stories was about when Willie Nelson had to auction off all of his property to pay off his tax debt. The day of the auction, a large group of his fans showed up, purchased various pieces of property and then gave each piece right back back to Willie. Now that is a fan base!

How did he do it? I have a feeling that it had to do with most, or all, of the following; He stay true to himself, worked his ass off, stayed connected to the fans and worried most about how we could help others. I think if we can do that, the rest of the stuff – if it even matters at that point – will take care of itself.

Yep, you read that right. Sir Elton John is going to be doing a tune with Alice In Chains on their upcoming album “Black Gives Way To Blue”. For the record I usually don’t do a ton of press release stuff but this is above and beyond Musicgoat worthy. I mean think about it, Elton John and Alice In Chains? I couldn’t have made it up if I tried. Can’t wait to check it out.

Los Angeles, CA (August 11, 2009) – Among the many highlights on Black Gives Way To Blue, the highly anticipated new album from ALICE IN CHAINS, is a special guest performance by Elton John. The two rock legends collaborated on the album’s stunning title track, “Black Gives Way To Blue,” a heart-stirring tribute to Alice In Chains’ late lead singer Layne Staley. The album arrives in stores September 29.

“We were thinking about adding piano to the track and a friend suggested we call Elton,” recalls guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell. “I remember laughing and saying, ‘Yeah, I’ll get right on that.’ But I decided it was worth trying and wrote Elton an email explaining what that song means to us — that it’s a real, raw openhearted song for Layne. We sent him the track and got a call shortly after saying he thought it was beautiful and that he wanted to play on it. We were blown away. Elton John is a huge influence on me as a songwriter and having him on that song is an amazing honor for us.”

“I’ve long been an admirer of Jerry Cantrell and when he asked me to play on ‘Black Gives Way To Blue,’ I was very flattered and couldn’t resist,” says John. “It was a great recording session with Alice In Chains for a beautiful song. ”

About the collaboration, Cantrell says, “Elton was finishing his Red Piano run in Vegas, so we flew there and hung out for a few hours. Walking into a studio and seeing the sheet music for that song on Elton’s piano made it meaningful on so many different levels. The whole experience was pretty magical.”

BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE is Alice In Chains’ first new studio release in more than 10 years. The quartet (guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney, bassist Mike Inez and guitarist/vocalist William DuVall) recorded the album with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Foo Fighters) at Studio 606 in Northridge, CA and Henson Studios in Hollywood.

Deaf Ear Records in Downtown LaCrosse Wisconsin

A month ago I had the pleasure of visiting a music store for the first time in many, many moons. I stopped in at one of my old favorites, Deaf Ear Records in LaCrosse Wisconsin, and realized how much I missed the experience and thought I would share it with you.

Back in the day (the late 80’s and much of the 90’s to be exact) I was the guy that could go into the record store and easily lose a few hours thumbing through albums, CD’s, cassettes and much of the other merch. For a geek there is a mild buzz associated with this (I would compare it to the buzz wild game hunters get when tracking a wild animal minus the blood and guts or the shopaholic gets when looking for their 400 pair of shoes).

One by one I would fingertip my way through hundreds of titles looking for something to pop out at me. Maybe the album art was cool. Maybe the artist sounded familiar since friend mentioned them once or maybe the used section provided a few long lost or hard to find favorites. Pure bliss!

This type of experience wasn’t for the non-geek. There were only a handful of friends that could even hang and enjoy these situations as much as myself. Most people could only last about a half hour max.

Anyway, I had about 4-5 albums that I wanted but I could only allow myself to leave with two. I decided to test my Musicgoat ways and go with music that I was compeltely unfamiliar with. The only criteria I had was – since I am on a songwriting kick –  that it needed to be something that was sonically different and had songwriting that was great at producing both mental imagery and emotion (the record store is one of the few places you can ask for something like that and get an answer…gottta love it).

In the end I went with the recommendations of the staff for one of my purchases and another based on curiosity built up from years of word of mouth. I took one of the staff recommendation and bought the The Decemberists “the Crane Wife”. It definitely fits the criteria I outlined for the staff – especially the imagery part…very poetic. I am not in love with the CD but I think it is decent and it is definitely pushing the boundaries of what I would typically listen to and that’s a good thing.

For my other selection, I went with Wilco and Billy Bragg “Mermaid Avenue” I always wanted to check out Wilco and Woodie Guthrie so I figured it would be a great place to start. The album is made up of songs with music written by Wilco and Bragg backing Woodie Guthrie lyrics (cool concept). Again not in love with it but it is growing on me.

Overall though – and maybe I am just too old school – the music store experience is something that just can’t be duplicated online (yet anyway). From the exhilaration of the hands on with the merch to the interaction with the staffers to the obscure staff pick humming in the background I just dig it. And if you haven’t had the chance yourself I recommend you get on it.

Excellent Willie Nelson Show I Went To A Few Year Back

I’m feelin a little frisky tonight so I am just going to throw this out there Seth Godin style and see what happens. A quick story and some “hopefully” useful advise.

A few months ago, a few friends and I realized that a lot of time went by between shows (because we’re all parents and semi-slaves now). We realized that it had been a long time since we felt the excitement and the energy you can only get by attending a live music event. We knew that our music loving souls were in need of a recharge and we knew we needed to do something about it. So we did!

We made a pact that every time there is a show within about a 100 mile radius, we were gonna make sure we made sure everyone else knew about it and then take it from there.

It worked. We’ve all been to many shows this year and there are many more in the works. We don’t always get to go together but we have made it a priority and are better off because of it.

Now if you are suffering from a serious case of live music deficiency, here’s a quick tip to improve your live music nutrition.

Look for a show in your area and just make up your mind that, come hell or high water, you’ll be there. Just make the decision. No more, “I’d like to go”…JUST GO.

Take a friend if you can. If not, screw it, go by yourself. You’ll meet some new people and chances are you’ll have something in common and you’ll have a new Facebook pal to share the music love with.

Deflagration “A Call To Arms” (Metal)

This stuff is damn heavy and breaks some new ground ta boot (I can’t quite pinpoint it but you’ll see what I mean). I’ve been listening before and during my workouts for over a month now and this stuff gets me really – and I mean REALLY – jacked up (which reminds me, try not to listen around your buddies that drink whiskey, unless you are looking to break up a fight).

Anyway, they kind of remind me of the band Pro-Pain (I think its the singing). Oh and don’t just take my word for it. I’ve shared their stuff with some of my live and bleed metal buddies and here are their comments;

Mark on Facebook – “Dude! I checked out Deflagration and it was awesome! Thanks!”

Bob on Facebook – “I like them. They sound different. I like the sound though. I might have to get the CD.”

My favorite tunes are “Split Wide” and “Color and Ash”. Bottom line, if you are a metal fan, you are gonna like these guys. These tunes will fit nicely in a playlist along side Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Metallica, Slipknot and many of the newer bands of that ilk. Check them out on MySpace or CDBaby.

Rob Anthony – “While the World Sleeps” (Acoustic Rock/Americana)

Speaking of metal, Rob Anthony is an ex-thrasher who has learned how to turn it up by turning it down. He has crafted a great acoustic album.

Even though I know it’s borderline heresy in the indie world, I’ve been listening a decent amount of top 40 rock, country and adult contemporary lately as part of my songwriting self-education. The stuff on this release could EASILY go toe to toe with almost anything on the pop charts. The top-notch songwriting is both timely and timeless.

His performance is very personal and very intimate. He will tap your psychy and bleed the emotion out of you on nearly every tune.  There is really no way to pick a few favorites because I love pretty much every tune on the disc. And for all of you cover tune nuts, you will want to check out his take on the DePeche Mode tune “Personal Jesus”.

Bottom line, if you haven’t heard him, you are missing out. Check him out on the official Rob Anthony Site or on CDBaby. Then tell everyone you know because he deserve to be heard. Oh and be on the lookout for an interview with Rob in the near future. We’ve been in contact and are trying to find some time in our schedules.

One of the great things about summer in the good ole’ US of A is the fact that there is never a shortage of the three ingredients that – when combined – can melt tension away faster than soft-serve ice cream on a 90 plus degree day. Those three ingredients – in case you missed the title – are the blues, tasty BBQ and some good beer.

That is why I have decided to make this theme an annual occurrence here on the goat. This year, not only do I load your player with ten KILLER blues tunes but I offer up an observation that might even keep you flatulence free the next morning.

Ideally you will want to play this podcast while BBQing outdoors with beer in hand – and people you want to impress within earshot – BUT if that ain’t in the cards, then grab a beer, press play and close your eyes, I will take you there.

Some Country music purists would probably say that anything that warrants the name “Alternative Country” is not really Country. But ultimately it is the domain of the fan to judge what an artist is or is not, to them.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Jennifer Dixon.

A little country sensibility with a style that hovers along the cusp of blues, pop, jazz owing to a stint on Memphis’ legendary Beale Street, and nearly a decade in Nashville, her new CD, “2 Years” is the fruit of experience. She did not come out of nowhere.

Which makes it all the more uncanny that she has been labeled “un-Nashville.”

The intro to “A Little You For Me” sounds like a nod to “I Lie Around” by Paul McCartney and Wings. But this Norah Jones-like tune comes from the heart of a woman who has given all she can give to the world, yet she finds she’s got a little more left for her man if he’ll meet her halfway. Like “I Lie Around” it never really takes off. It threatens to, repeatedly. But when it comes down to it, it’s just right.

“Too Tired To Care” is Dixon, having been there, done that and not doing it again regarding love. When she starts to hear the same old lines, she is just that, too tired to care. It is a mellow funk romp with a lyric delivered in focused rapid fire, highlighted with some sultry vocal inflections.

“Easy Goodbye” seems to be a follow up on the same theme in that, having heard it all before, its easy to let go and move on. These two tracks are the most un-Nashville of the bunch. One can picture many of today’s top female vocalists flagrantly over-doing “Easy Goodbye”, robbing it of its symbolic ease. One of its greatest features is that the musicians, while doing some top-notch work, back off and let the vocals shine.

With these tracks what you get is a many-tiered cynical view of love. In that respect, “If You’re Looking For An Angel” is refreshing. Just when you are expecting something like “Strong Enough” by Cheryl Crow, it turns into something closer to “I Can’t Make You Love Me” by Bonnie Raitt in its vulnerability. For instance, in the chorus, Dixon sings “If you’re looking for an angel…” Having heard a couple of these songs, one may be surprised to hear her continue with “here I am.” It’s sweet, its comforting, and it demonstrates that with a few gentle, sincere words, yes, women can make men, dare I say it, swoon.

Love Me Back” delivers the very subtlest hints of the smoky vocals of Natalie Merchant or Melissa Etheridge, yet tips the scales with those well-executed vocal inflections again.

Dixon finally brings the thunder with “I Need a Man.” It’s gritty, harkening back to Tanya Tucker, matching the vocal strength of Carrie Underwood. Here Dixon is laying it all out on the line as if to say “This is what I need, damn you!”

Editors note: This post is pretty inspiring and very timely for me personally. I am starting to wake up to my true calling – writing, recording and performing – and this is the kind of stuff – from someone who is making it happen – that has me believing. I hope that it inspires you the way it inspired me. Enjoy!

In a book I read not long ago titled “Do You” by Russell Simmons, he shared the discovery he made regarding success and the pursuit of “things” as a benchmark of success. He noted an unnamed MC who spent lots of money on a nice car and rims. Inevitably, sometime after the purchase the question shows up; “Is this it?“

Russell noted what many of us have felt after the euphoria of the moment is over: a feeling of emptiness. Further back in history a King named Solomon, presumed to be the richest man of his time said he indulged in every pleasure and bought every nice thing, yet in the end it was like chasing the wind.

Now, I’m not knocking nice things (considering that everybody that knows me would say I was fronting if I did – I LOVE NICE THINGS!!) I’m merely attempting to shed some light on what we’ve been taught or has been suggested to accept as success and what really is success. I’m going to leave the defining of success up to you; however I offer these thoughts for your consideration.

One of the most important questions to ask is; why am I doing what I’m doing? Whatever you’re reasoning is fine if it works for you, however, if in the end your sense of satisfaction doesn’t match up to what you thought it would, you have not really achieved what you set out for.

The shame isn’t in discovering that your judgment was wrong, we all go through that; the shame is in going hard for things that if we had deeply considered the cost would never have been pursued. I produce music because I can’t “not” do it! Music lives in me. I compose melodies because I hear their beauty in every hour of my day.

As a grown man I occasionally receive odd looks because I walk around ‘beat boxing’ when no one else hears any music. The drums are in my soul. I have been blessed with a gift that is so evident that even when I have performed well in other occupations the screaming question in my mind was: “What the hell are you doing, doing anything other than music?”

The world has over seven billion people. It is scientifically and mathematically impossible for you to walk in your gift and not have the life you desire. However, if you don’t know why you are pursuing a thing; “You may just be chasing the wind!”

My passion is creativity itself. My desire is to release excellence from my mind, my heart and my hands and to help all those that I can to do the same. These things I have discovered through shame, experience, deep thought and a little wind chasing of my own. I thank God for my current understanding.

One of my all time favorite rappers said this: “I’m focused man!” -Jay Z Ask yourself; are you focused on real success? True success will never leave you with an empty feeling.

The Summer will be brimming with competitions, festivals, tours and holiday bashes;  many opportunities for getting your Band a gig or a little name recognition.   Talent Searches, Tours and Battle of the Bands  pay out prize money or comps equal to what you would earn at a gig, ALL for just a one hour performance.   Networking with the Bands and Industry people at these Events can offer tremendous earning potential by breaking you into new Venues. 

Here are some simple tips to get an edge over your competitors:

1. Play original songs.  You’re allowed only one cover song and it’s got to be perfect.
2. Your song should have basic structure.  Like in writing; intro, body and conclusion.
3. Songs shouldn’t be longer than 5 minutes.
4. Play for your allotted time or less, but never more.
5. Move. Everyone in the Band needs to be active at the same time.
6. Your timing needs to be impeccable. It proves a Band is well rehearsed.
7. Spend very little time with sound checks; one song only with minor quick adjustments if absolutely  required.
8. Get the audience moving.  Play your hottest beats and most gut punching riffs from song one and don’t stop.
9. Demonstrate your instrument or vocal talent with a solo.  Have a focus song.  45 seconds of fame.
10. Try to go last in the line-up, leaving a lasting impression.

These competitions not only put cash in your hand but promote your Band.  You will need to register early or go through an acceptance process with small fees to be a performer.  They’re usually sponsored by radio stations, sound companies or huge corporations.  Seek out Talent Searchs, Tours and Battle of the Bands to compete and “be seen” in your area.  No matter how small the Venue;  if you come out as the winner, it’s a feather in your cap so toot your own horn and post that big win on your message boards.

If you want to learn how to write a song, do what all successful songwriters should do: Study songwriting. If you want to learn how to write great songs, study great songs!

If you want to be a master songwriter, learn from the masters.

If you’ve been writing songs for a while, you most likely are doing something right. When you write regularly you get a feel for it. You develop an instinct for what is catchy, memorable and engaging.

But you can take it further than that.

Think of a craftsman, say, someone who is good with wood. He may have a natural ability to carve or construct things from wood. If he does it all the time he’s going to get really good at it.

Now, if that same person studied woodworking as an apprentice, imagine how much faster he will learn his craft. By studying with the masters, he will learn shortcuts and techniques that might take him years longer on his own.

Same with songwriting.

By studying the techniques of hit songwriters, you learn what works and what doesn’t. You learn how to write songs. That doesn’t mean you have to give up your natural style, or change who you are.

It simply means you learn better ways to present your unique ideas.

By studying song form you can learn to better express those ideas which are unique to you. You learn to build a better vehicle to take your song ideas where you want them to go.

So how do we study hit songs?

Listen to the radio! Listen to the radio with a critical ear. Listen closely and ask yourself a series of questions:

1. Why does this song appeal to me?
2. What is it about the chorus that I find so irresistible?
3. What emotion/s does the melody evoke?
4. Why do the lyrics speak to me?

Keep on asking yourself these questions. Keep digging deeper for more answers. There can be many reasons why a song is so appealing. Find and analyse the reasons why it appeals to you.

And when writing your songs, don’t underestimate the importance of rewriting. Never settle for the first draft. You can do better.

That’s what all great songwriters have done and continue to do.

Songwriting is an ongoing process. There is always something new to learn. You never stop learning. So please don’t ever think you’re done!

If you are a sucker for good (or at least interesting) cover songs, then check these out. Here are a few of the good – and not so good – that I’ve come across lately.

First, you’ll want to check out Prince doing “Crimson and Clover”. Even though I am a Prince fan and fellow resident of the great state of Minnesota, I still like Joan Jetts cover better.

Next, I’m not a huge Deftones guy but I thought this was pretty cool.  Here they are doing a cover of The Cars “Drive” on YouTube. 

And Finally, here’s a question for you. What do you get when you mix the Beatles and Metallica with a dash of Spinal Tap and pinch of Weird Al Yankovich? If you said Beatallica than you must have known already because there is no way in hell anyone else other than Beatallica could come up with such a wacky concept.

With song titles like “Sgt. Hetfield’s Motorbreath Pub Band”, “I Saw Her Thrashing There”, “Leper Madonna” and “A Garage Dayz Night”, Beatallica conjure up one of the most powerful marketing force known to man… curiosity. How could you possibly do anything else until you hear at least one of those tunes. I couldn’t.

After listening, the truth is, I don’t know what the hell to think. I do have to hand it to the lead singer, Jaymz Lennfield, the dude has the Hetfield “yayaaaaa” down. And I gotta give them credit for being so damn original at not being, original. Either way, I bet they are having a pretty good time. Props to my brother-in-law, Treadmarkz, for introducing me.

Regarding why the Beatles broke up, for years, I was a member of the “Yoko Is Evil” sect. Then for a while I converted to Paul-is-an-Egomaniac-ism. I took it for granted that the truth lay somewhere within these two camps. Eventually I realized the many other factors: John Lennon’s addiction to heroin; the death of the Beatles manager Brian Epstein; their music and individual talents getting too big to be contained within one album; George Harrison’s waning interest in traditional western pop music.

Part of the reason for Harrison’s change of direction was his growing passion for Indian music, philosophy and eventually religion. Recently I have myself become immersed in a faith which relies heavily on the Hindu worldview regarding reincarnation, karma, “Hell” as distance from God rather than a literal lake of fire. I feel my years of Beatles fandom was just a way to get me across that spiritual bridge.

Whenever I meditate on a worldly desire and make a vow to do, or not do any given thing, if I later fall back on that vow, I find that I do face consequences of my action. It’s Karma, its Natural Law, the Law of Truth, whatever you want to call it. A dharma (religious duty) of Hinduism, Christianity and all major religions really is “Do not bear false witness” with an implied “or else…” involved. Mohandas Gandhi wrote of this concept in depth in his “Autobiography.”

In 1967, the rest of the Beatles willingly accompanied Harrison to Wales for a weekend seminar on Transcendental Meditation, and to India the following spring for an extended course. Though the course did not make religious faith a priority, there is always an aspect of spirituality with meditation, and where there is spirituality, there is a connection with God on one level or another. Whether one accepts it or not, that door is opened at that time. The importance of the Law of Truth is, hence, heightened.

Before the Wales seminar, the Beatles were on top of the world having just released Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the single “All You Need Is Love” that summer. They were the voice of the youth movement. What happened?

Two of the Beatles’ best-known songs are “Can’t Buy Me Love” and “All You Need Is Love”. Could the Beatles have written, recorded and performed these songs for profit, all the while living the lavish and, lets face it, decadent lifestyles they did without Karma rearing its ugly head?

While they were at the Wales seminar, their manager died. But things still seemed good six months later when they left for India. While in India, John Lennon flirted with the idea that their next move as a band should be to become “spiritual leaders.” For the course, they were to give up all non-prescription drugs for mental clarity. But none of them gave up smoking pot and once they got back from India John went back to LSD and soon started using heroin. Even George never gave up his rock star lifestyle while scolding other rich people in a song called “Piggies.”

Even though they wrote about 40 songs in India the following spring and seemed to be very together, as soon as they got back from India, everything seemed to fall apart rapidly. From the beginning of the White Album sessions in May 1968 there were bitter arguments. This was followed by Yoko entering the picture, a bitter struggle for power in the band, and a very bitter court battle which eventually tore the band asunder.

Was Yoko’s presence a catalyst to bring on the negative Karma the Beatles collected through their non-adherence to the law of Truth? What about the death of Brian Epstein? Another example of Karmic retribution on the band? Surely not as their Karma should not have dragged Brian and his very life into it. It may have been Karma from past incarnations that caused them to have to go through such a tragedy together, but that is a different story. The disaster of Apple Corps., and the resulting lawsuits over money which ended the Beatles, however, seem like fitting Karmic retribution for years of singing about love being more important than money, all the while making money and lifestyle the most important thing in reality.  And Lennon must have known it, as one of his first solo singles was “Instant Karma, where he sang  “Instant Karma’s gonna get you” and “we all shine on”, meaning “we all have to live with the consequences of our actions, so be careful.” Indeed, his band had fallen mightily from grace.

The Pundits

First, check out Bob Lefsetz over at Lefsetz.com. He feels that the Album is dead and explains why in his posts Albums and More Albums.

Meanwhile, Scott Perry of New Music Tipsheet – by way of Hypebot – thinks that Bob Lefsetz is promoting career suicide, and says so in his post In Defense of the Album. (For the record, considering the nature of his site he may be a tad biased. Just my opinion).

And finally, I saw this post this morning by Dave Allen discussing the “End of the Album as the Organizing Principle” over on the Music Think Tank.

My Two Four Cents

Other than the points made by Bob and Dave, there are a few other reasons why for me – as an aspiring indie artist - that releasing my music song by song makes sense right now.

First, I don’t want to spend the time pouring over 10-12 songs. In the time I was spending contemplating the album, I could have 2-4 songs floating around working the crowd and building a little momentum while at the same time allowing me to getting a better feel for who my audience is. This would allow me to make certain adjustments to my marketing strategy if needed.

Second, I don’t have a ton of  experience recording and I don’t want to make an entire CD of half ass recordings. Practice makes perfect right? I might have a few below average recordings out of the shoot but after 2, 3 or 4 I should be kicking out some good stuff.

Third, releasing one track at a time gives me opportunity to monetize and/or promte the song more than once. I plan to use the song as a way to get the fan interested enough to opt in to my list and then, down the line, I could release all the tunes as part of a compilation.

Fourth, I think that focusing on one song at a time will make each song better overall. How many times have you bought a cd’s where you just know 5-6 of the track were nothing more than filler. Had the artist had more time to contemplate the tunes they would have either been better or just thrown out.

Honorable Mention

There are few other reasons why a single by single would make sense for an Indie artist.

If you aren’t recording yourself you may be paying for studio time. Recording a song at a time may not be practical over the long haul but in the short run would be. Plus, if you are savvy, having a single or two could help you raise money for future recordings.

Or, maybe you aren’t sure if you have what it takes. Dipping your toe in the water with a single or two before jumping in head first ccould give you some insight as to what is to come.

Finally, maybe you need a little validation of your or your bands talent. Better to find out after a song or two than after a huge investment of time, money and emotion.

The Finish

In general, I think there is something to be said about not blowing your wad in one shot. Slowly releasing a track or two at a time may create a little anticipation for the listener while giving the artist another legitimate opporutnity to communicate with his audience.

Hell, single by single worked for many of the greats The Beatles, Elvis, Cash, etc.

Besides, you can always do an album at some point if you really want to. Afterall, it is what some of you and I were brought up on and there will always be a little bit of nostalgia for that format.

Bottom line, find what works for you and roll with it. What do you think?

I figured I would take a few minutes to share my thoughts and get a conversation started to see what you thought.

First, it is always cool to see dudes at that age still getting the job done. Little Anthony and the Imperials were fun to watch – My 2 year daughter was even shaking her butt a little. It was one of the times were I knew that I heard the songs before but didn’t know who did them – now I know.

Being a metalhead – and other than the fact that I started feeling old – I really enjoyed the Metallica portion of the show. The big softy in me thought it was great to see Jason Newsted jamming with them. He deserves the recognition since he was part of the group during some of it most significant work.

I also think it was cool to hear Jason and Robert to give props to their old bands Flotsam and Jetsam and Suicidal Tendencies respectively.

I loved Flea’s speech. I kinda felt the same way when I heard “Fight Fire with Fire” for the first time.

During his speech, James Hetfield mentioned a ton of other bands that he thought should be in the Rock Hall. Bands like Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Judas Priest and Motorhead. Not only do I agree but I think you make a case that anyone of those bands should be in there before Metallica, Jeff Beck or Run DMC (who I think should be in there BTW). But, I’m sure like most things, its all political. Wha-da-ya-do?

I was kind of hoping that maybe Rod Stewart would surprise us and so a tune with Beck but nothing. The “Immigrant Song” was pretty cool and I really dug his band. They really get into it.  And how about the chick playing bass. She can groove.

Jimmy Page – who is starting to look a bit like George Washington – sure likes to talk about himself and seems to come off as being a dick. Don’t get me wrong, he is a legend and I am a huge Zeppelin fan but I’m just saying. Maybe it was to tv guys drooling all over him. Those guys acted like 13 year olds teeny boppers in the presense of the Jonas Brothers.

Like I said, I regrettably missed Run DMC but hopefully I will get a chance to check it out in the near future. If you watched the show, let us know what you thought about the festivities in the comments below.

I heard it on Sirius Octane this morning and I – like the DJ who introduced the song – have been struggling with it since (just a little bit). On one hand, from a creative freedom standpoint,  it is cool that Seether has the balls to cover a tune by a band that – to put it mildly – doesn’t quite fit the their image.  

On the other hand, from a shoot-yourself-in-the-foot standpoint, you have to wonder what their fans think about it. I can’t imagine that the typical hard rock fan is pumped to sing along with “I’m never gonna dance again…”. And speaking from a long history as a metalhead, this sort of thing would be punishable by death back in the day (lol).

Now I don’t mind Seether and the 80’s teenager that still hangs out inside of me has a soft spot for “Careless Whisper”. But, I am just not so sure they belong together. What do you think?

The Label

Based out of Detroit, Small Stone – for the most part – represent bands that are of the stoner rock ilk, but, they aren’t afraid to mix it up – one of my favorite finds, happens to be country.

They have stood the test of time and have been putting out their brand of music since 1995. In an April 2008 article on Metromix,  the founder Scott Hamilton explained that he wanted to model the label after Sub Pop. He also defined stoner rock as being “just a really amped up version of classic rock” with “a bunch of fat guys with beards in the crowd.” You gotta love the honesty.

The Bands

Here  are some of the bands that caught my attention. And, to give you sort of a jumping off point, I’ve listed a tune or two from each (which by the way have made it into heavy rotation on my iPod).

Oh and just so you know, you can buy the cd’s on Small Stones site and if you are the mp3 type, everyone of these artists – and the tunes listed – are available for immediate download on emusic (which means you can get them for free if you don’t have an emusic account).

Anyway, check these bands out;

Roadsaw - If you are fan of early Soundgarden circa “Louder Than Love” – or just grunge in general – you need to check these guys out. I love vocals and the smooth grind that is present throughout.

I think your best bet to get a feel for what these guys can do is to get started with “Up To You” and “It’s Your Move”.

Whitey Morgan and the 78’s –  WARNING: When combined with good weather, good booze and good friends, the music of Whitey Ford could leave you with a splitting headache and a pissed off boss.

This band takes a well needed and refreshing approach to old school country. They easily slip into all of the elements of 70’s era outlaw and all of their tunes will make Waylon, Wille and Bosephus fans very, very happy (and a little jagged).

I recommend that you download the whole album but if you are only going to stick your toe in the water, make sure you check out “Crazy” and “If It Ain’t Broke”.

Mos Generator –  The riff heavy tunes that these guys are laying down are immediately addictive. The tune “Acapulco Gold” – which could easily be the love child of Steely Dan and Monster Magnet – documents a love affair of the smokin kind. And “Wizards of the Prophecy Pen” is a well produced tune that could very easily be an early Sabbath tune. Grab them!

Well, that whole experience reminded me of some of the amazing video I’ve seen on YouTube of various child musical prodigies. Young children that play instruments and sound like they have been playing for years.

Well, clearly the beef between Apple Corps and Apple Computers that started a while back is still bitter as ever, and unfortunately this will deny listeners who live and die by the iPod access to the Beatles music. But, lo! Here it is! The Beatles Rock Band arrives in stores on September 9th!

The upcoming release of the Fabs’ foray into the gamer world is exciting for me. Because it is yet another confirmation of what I have been telling the Musicgoat for years: the Beatles, as a cultural phenomenon, will never – yes I said Never – die.

If I had an Xbox, Playstation or Wii, I would definitely shell out the $99.99 to get myself an imitation McCartney violin bass, or a Harrison twelve-string Rickenbacker which is included for use with the game. I would have liked more information on what specifically is included in the Special Edition. For $249, you want to know, and you want time to save up for it if it is what you want. I am sure it is not worth it unless you get an imitation Beatles sitar, Moog synthesizer, harmonium, tape loop machine, wind machine, and calliope, so I can play the Beatles’ studio-era music to the full effect.

But even if not, wow, music in video games has come a helluva long way since the Mario Bros theme song, huh?

Tech-FAQ.com’s “Convert Your iTunes to MP3 and Convert iTunes to MP3 Format (Ask Bob Rankin).

They look simple but maybe a tad bit time consuming. However, it could be a small price to pay if you are worried about losing your tunes or looking to standardize your collection.

I don’t think it will be long before most of the music download services go DRM free but these techniques look like they should get you by until.

For instance, I will do a hard rock/metal oriented podcast one month, follow it up with an indie acoustic country show the next month and then post a review on a Hip Hop artist that has caught my ear the next. As you can imagine certain fans – within either genre – could get a little annoyed and therefore not stick around (which is a bummer but you can’t please everybody right?).

Anyway, I knew this would make it more difficult to build an audience but this is the most honest way for me to approach a music site. I knew I couldn’t talk about one style over and over when there is just to much to like from many other genres. Also, I knew that there were others out there who like to mix it up as well and I figured this would pose a great opportunity to find them.

Now, why am I telling you this? Well I just learned the other day that the Musicgoat made number 36 on the list of Top 50 Twitter Users in Hard Rock and Metal.

What that means is that I haven’t completely alienated the metal community, in particular one of its biggest proponents, Marc Mark Carras (RockMyMonkey.com and HeavyAsHell.com). Mark, the author of the list, is one hardcore fan of all things metal. Having him endorse the Goat is an honor. Thanks Marc!

Early this morning, like any other morning lately, I reluctantly drug my ass out of a warm bed, shuffled my son through our pre-dawn sleepwalk and then headed out the door to what was looking like a long day at work.

I was tired, it was freakin cold and the snow was falling (again). I turned the key in the ignition, backed out of my driveway and this began to play…

…Out from the speakers came this mental massage and the feeling of “everything my friend…is gonna be alright.” That massage and that reassurance were provided by a band called, Lubriphonic on their release entitled “Soul Solution.” Like an old freind sitting next to me in the car, that CD hung out with me for the remainder of that day – and the next – and then made its way to these pages.

The band – based out of Chicago – is loaded with road tested musicians who have toured with the likes of Koko Taylor, Buddy Miles, The Ohio Players and Lenny Kravitz.

These pros have put together a disc that has a little bit of everything. If you dig soul, blues, classic rock, great guitar, a little bit of funk and a soaring horn section, you will lap this up.

Oh and I can’t forget to mention the soulful “i’ve been there” vocals, the ultra-nimble fingers that make the guitar and bass flow and groove, and man, the acoustic tunes on this disc are about as honest, as comfy and as real as it gets.

I like almost all of the tunes but make sure you check out “Rain Keep Falling”, “Walls”, “Chalk Talk, “Mexico City Blues”, and “Soul Solution.” I would also recommend ordering the CD so that you can hear the bonus live tunes. They are well worth the wait!

I am not going to try to get the design and layout done in one shot but rather over the course of days – maybe weeks, lol. Well see. I am doing that because, for one, my time is limited, and two, sometimes it takes awhile to get something right (kinda like a good recipe or a good song).

Update: I am trying out the tagline, “For the Open Minded Fan and the Hard Workin Band.” I am trying to come up with something that conveys what I do here; 1) share new music – in a variety of styles – with the fans and 2) help bands and artists promote their music by either playing or reviewing myself or share some of my internet marketing know-how.

Now I didn’t see John Mayer, Springsteen or Metallica looking for work on any of the sites – not that most of us could afford their services anyway – but, if you look listen around, you will find some talented artists for some pretty reasonable prices. And I imagine the talent pool will only get better as the popularity of these sites grows.

I think it is a great idea for both the fans and the artists. Hell, as soon as I get my music up and running, you can bet I will be throwing up a profile on one or all of these sites. I mean, how cool would it be to be invited into someones home to party with someones closest friends AND get paid?

So next time you are looking for a live music fix, why go out to the club or coffee shop? Hop on to one of these sites and then hire yourself a capable musician to entertain you – and your pals – right in the comfort of your own home.

I just love the format of the show. It is recorded in a theatre in front of a live audience – the sound quality is impeccable. It features interviews and short sets by two different artists that come from separate backgrounds and influences. At the end of the show the two artist – who may have never met – get together for an impromptu jam on some cover tune.

Some of the bigger names that I’ve heard on the show are Ben Harper, Steve Earle and Jakob Dylan. But, you will – without a doubt – find yourself Googling some of the other names that you hear. All the artists on E Town are top notch.

Other than the music, there something which also makes the show stand out. Each show they give an “Echievement” award to someone who is out there making a difference in the world. Some of the things that these everyday individuals are accomplishing in the name of helping out their fellow man are unbelievable. Inspiring to say the least.

Overall, here are all the words that come to mind when I think E Town; mellow, laidback, thought proving, feel good, inspiring, acoustic, absorbing. It is just a great show to listen to if you just want to kick back or be inspired (and who doesn’t want that). Also, the fact that it is live in front of a studio audience gives it a warm, personal and ambient quality just sucks you in.

If you are an artist or band looking for a place to send your music demo, not only do I have a great suggestion for you but I have a few ideas on how you promote your music while your at it. Check it.

A few months back I started looking around for places to send my songs so that – if ever get around to finishing and recording them – I would have a solid strategy for giving them the best chance to be heard by reliable poeple.

I know, it is a pretty “horse before the cart” approach but never mind me, I wrote this to help you. Here goes.

The first place I looked…

Taxi.com – After reading about this site in the book “The Craft and Business of Songwriting” I figured it was the best place to start. Once I visited I was impressed. I read a ton of the stuff on their site and then signed up for their free newsletter.

It costs money but when you consider the access you have to and solid feedback from – as Taxi refers to them as – “well paid” music industry veterans and other entertainment professionals, it is a no-brainer.

Check out Taxi now and see for yourself.

There are more but….

If you want to find other sources check out this Google search for “music industry directory”. Although, after looking through some of the top results I’m not sure many of them are as reliable, trustworthy and, most of all, effective as Taxi (but if you know different or of more, let me know so I can share).

Take it to the people…

While your demo is waiting to be heard and critiqued by the pros, why not see if you can create some buzz by taking it to the poeple.

There are tons of poeple who are looking for stuff to write about and play. Better yet, there are a ton more jonesing to read about and hear new music from those poeple. Go find them now on these sites.

Indie Bible -For a measly $34.95, this 330 page music marketing Swiss Army Knife will show you how to get access to 4000 music publications willing to do reviews, 3200 radio stations willing to play your songs along with 1200 other resources looking to help you get the word out.

I know this works because the Musicgoat is listed in here and I get bombarded with tons of mail – e and snail – filled with CD’s, mp3’s, press releases, review requests, etc.  Go get a copy now.

Sonicbids – I am sure you know that Getting out and playing your tunes live is where to rubber meats the road. This site helps bands and artists get gigs along with providing a ton of promotional tools to save you time and headaches.

Quite a few of the bands that submit stuff to this site use this and I love it because everything I need to know and hear about the band is in one place and easy to find. Check out their Free trial.

Update!

Music Business Radio – This is a great podcast – based in Nashville, TN – with interviews with leaders from around the music indusrty. They also have a segment that they call “Dave’s Demo Derby” where they play music for the guests (some of which are heads of record labels). You can visit the Music Business Radio contact page for more info. On a few occasions, I have heard some of the guests ask for more info on the artist because they like what they heard. Who knows, maybe your music will strike a tune with an influencial music industry person.

Others – Check out sites like Garageband and the Podsafe Music Network. Also, make sure you check out my blogroll – on the left – for some of my favorite blogs and podcasts that are accepting music for review consideration.

I am sure I could sit here and rifle off a bunch more but I will stop. Besides, I don’t want your head to explode. This list alone should keep you busy for a really, really long time. I was flipping through eMusic the other day when I noticed a new release by an old favorite of mine, Extreme. I was a little apprehensive at first but figured what the hell, I’ll download it. Boy am I glad I did. Here is a quick review.

The title of the release is “Saudades De Rock“. In the opening line on the track “Slide” Gary Cherone sings “Find a groove and then drop the hammer.” That pretty much sums up most of the tunes on the release.

One of the reason i was a fan of Extemes music was because I am a sucker for good guitar. I always loved Nuno’s guitar work and this release did not do anything to change that. He is one of a seemingly dieing breed of guitarists who can dance over the fretboard, navigating a path of tasty grooves throughout every song.

The whole CD is about what you would expect from Extreme if you were a fan of some of the their popular stuff like “Pornograffitti” and/or “Three Sides to Every Story” but they do venture into new territory and pull it off well.

Bottom line, if you love active guitar, meaty grooves and solid songwriting, this is a no-brainer.
