I had such fun making these. I am discovering that beading is quite as satisfying as crocheting, although in a very different way. When I crochet, it is a leap of faith that the pattern and yarn colors will work together well, as I am never (even after all these years of crocheting) really able to “see” how the project will look as a finished project until it is done. The real work is the actual crocheting and there is a sense of excitement as the project begins to finish up if everything has come together as planned. With beading, I can lay out the beads, move them around, try this and that and actually tell how it will look before they are strung. All the real “work” is done in the planning and playing with how the necklace will look. The actual stringing and finishing is done in no time at all and almost a let-down in how quickly the project finishes.

I do need to set up a “bead center” in one of our spare bedrooms – I believe Bill became weary of moving bead boards and bins around the dining room table whenever he wanted to eat.

Saturday we drove to Phoenix and visited with family, which is always nice. When we left home, the sun was shining brightly, but we could see low dark clouds all around us and sure enough, the snow began to fall just north of Huachuca City and continued until the outskirts of Tucson.

And then we were back to sunshine!

For most of the day it was sunny and very cool, especially by Phoenix standards. We did even have a little spell of raindrops on the windshield while in Phoenix, but not enough to even run the wipers.

On the return trip we were treated to the most spectacular sunset between Picacho Peak and Marana (north of Tucson). The mountains to the east were getting rain/snow and the setting sun cast its red hues on the clouds, making it appear like the mountains were on fire.

And the sunset was gorgeous!

These were taken from inside the car, going down the Interstate at 75 mph! The first two I took with my cell phone and the rest with my camera. The cell phone does a really good job and I may end up using that more than my camera! And yes, Bill was driving. If I had been driving, we’d have been camped out on an overpass taking pictures until dark!

Yesterday I posted pictures of several Crochet Chain Necklaces (& Bracelets) and promised one made with Royal Sparkly yarn (Caron Simply Soft Party) today, so here it is:

I can’t decide if I like the blue or the green better.

I’ve also begun playing with some beads and made this for Munchkin for Valentine’s Day:

I’m hope it isn’t too long. I really need some measurements for her! But, if it is too long, I have another butterfly and more beads, so I could make a shorter one and Munchkin could give this one to her Mommy. 

I’ve been having fun making Crochet Chain Necklaces. Last fall I saw a pattern at The Beading Gem’s Journal and I immediately made a supplies list. Finally, last week I had time to make try it out.

The first thing I learned was that the chain I had purchased was too small for the size yarn and hook recommended. So I had to make some changes. The necklace in the above picture is my third (and finally successful) attempt. I used Aunt Lydia’s Aqua Ice Bamboo crochet thread (which is oh, so soft on the skin!) and a size 2 (2.25mm) crochet hook. The original chain purchased was long enough to make a matching bracelet. I wore these the other night and they were very comfortable.

This second necklace and bracelet was made the same as above, using a bronze chain and Aunt Lydia’s Green Tea Ice Bamboo crochet thread.

This past weekend I purchased some larger chain, so this morning I whipped this one off in about half an hour.

This Crochet Chain Necklace was made with Caron Simply Soft Party yarn, Spring Sparkle, and a size F/5 (3.75 mm) crochet hook. I added extensions to each of my necklaces at the clasp because they seem to hang better that way. Plus I like the adjustability in length.

I have another chain and some Caron Simply Soft Party yarn in Royal Sparkle (blue) – you know what I’ll be making tonight!

In January, there were memories to preserve:

Munchkin has gotten so good at writing/typing/spelling that we were able to have an hour and a half Skype conversation, all in words. I see many more conversations in our future.

We spent a pleasant couple of hours in early January with Bill’s cousins in Tempe, having lunch and catching up on family news.

David spent the Christmas / New Year’s holidays with us. David and I spent an afternoon in Bisbee, eating lunch, walking the downtown and window shopping. It was great fun. I took several pictures of the snow falling – it was cold that day! We had a pleasant time together, as we always do.

In January, there were things that deserved editing:

Charles had a very serious bout of food poisoning in January, so severe that he was hospitalized for two days. These are the times when I most dislike living so far away. All you can do is hope and pray and wait for updates. Luckily he recovered and was able to be back to work a week later, but it was still a very scary time.

My Uncle Kent’s memorial service was held on January 3rd, a very sad way to begin 2013. It was held in New York, so I was not there, but I was glad that my brother Eric and my mom both were able to attend and represent the family. Having lost my father less than two years ago, I know what my cousins Roberta and Rebecca are going through and I think about them every day, holding them in my heart and sending hugs and love.

In January, there were the moments that hold our lives together:

I had yearly lab work done to check on my thyroid levels and a follow-up doctor’s visit. Other than cutting back on some sweets/breads and losing a little weight, his advice was to have a better year in 2013 than I had in 2012 with a lot less stress.

January was full of usual things like getting the car serviced, my having a cavity filled, a bathroom sink replaced, and the furnace not working one morning (nothing serious, just the new furnace is very fussy about dirty – or even slightly dirty – filters!).

I signed up for a weekly FarmBox of fresh, locally-grown fruits and vegetables. We received our first box the last week of January and I was quite pleased with it. I have wanted to do something like this for years, but never had the opportunity. It is a good feeling to be supporting local farmers.

I completed two crochet projects – a granny square Christmas stocking and a granny square lapghan. I also worked on a couple of crocheted jewelry projects, which I will be posting about here in February.

In January, there were mountains climbed:

My anxiety issues seem to be fading away. I’m not sure exactly what has helped – walking daily, adding more protein into my diet, the natural supplement kicking in better – but whatever it was, I have not had any symptoms since New Year’s Eve, for which I am grateful.

My one big goal this year was to walk daily, and while I’m not yet at 100% success, I did manage 23 walks in the 31 days of January.

My desk has remained (mostly) clean and neat and I have been working diligently on getting Quicken up to date (after procrastinating the first two weeks of the month).

I participated in a “Values” workshop at Thirty Day Focus, which was a very worthwhile experience. I discovered a few things about myself, had other things reinforced, and ended January with a much better outlook than I began the month. I highly recommend Thirty Day Focus and will likely take another of their monthly workshops later in the year.

In January, there were pitfalls to overcome:

We have been trying to cut back on desserts (sweets) and lower our carb intake this month. I sent a huge care box to David full of items we shouldn’t be eating. So far, mixed results. But each day is a new day to begin again.

It seems like every January is a stressful one on Bill’s job front and this has January has been no exception. He says it is months like these that make driving truck seem like a really good alternative.

I continue to have to deal with many issues concerning my dad’s estate and I will have to make another trip to Alabama soon, possibly the end of February, definitely by mid-March. His house is empty now, so there is some cleaning out of personal effects that needs to be done, along with lining up an auctioneer for a sale later in the year.

On Monday I posted a rainbow picture and then said I hoped to get out of town to find more photo opportunities later in the day. Well, I didn’t get out of town, but I did get to the edge of town in the afternoon in order to get a clear shot of this lovely rainbow:

At dusk, on the way back from picking Bill up at work, I pulled over and took this “sunset” picture:

Those clouds should have been a warning, as we woke up Tuesday morning to snow and ice everywhere! Not enough to shut things down here, although there were several accidents due to icy streets/roads. The eastern portion of Cochise County was pretty much shut down with several inches of snow and wind-driven snow drifts, along with some icy roads. Thankfully the sun was shining and things melted off fairly quickly. And no, I didn’t go out and take any pictures of the snow. The wind was blowing and it was COLD!

I have had to take a bit of a break from crocheting this past week or so due to some shoulder/arm/hand issues. Thankfully they are clearing up and I hope to be crocheting again soon. In the meantime, here are some projects that I completed in early January.

Granny Square Christmas Stocking

When my children were little, my step-mother gave us several granny square Christmas stockings, which we used every year. They were large, would expand to hold many items, and best of all, were washable! Last October when I was in Alabama I dug them out of the storage unit and shipped them back to myself.

They needed a good cleaning, but unfortunately, this washing proved to be one too many and several of the stockings began to come apart. So, while repairing them, I was able to figure out just exactly how they were made and I made a duplicate new one.

I am so pleased with the results and I know I will be making many more in the future.

Granny Square Lapghan

A Housewarming gift for a friend back home in New York, large enough to cover a lap or two while watching TV.

Here it is folded into quarters. It was crocheted with Deborah Norville’s Everyday yarn and is super soft. I may just have to make one of these for myself this year!

Over the weekend we had .39 inches of rain in our backyard (did I mention how much I love my new weather station?). This morning it has been misting off and on, although not in enough quantity to register, yet.

When I took Bill in to work this morning, I saw rainbows!

There’s just a hint of a second rainbow to the left of the brilliant rainbow. I took this as I was coming off post, looking back west to the Huachuca Mountains.

The sky/cloud/mountain interplay the last few days has been quite spectacular when we have been taking our daily walks. I took this yesterday afternoon:

This is looking east, towards the hills around Tombstone and the taller mountains beyond.

I hope to get a chance to drive out of town a bit sometime today and see what photo opportunities arise.
