Aretha Freak Gives "Home Game" FIVE MEGA-SUPER-NEXT GENERATION Stars!!!

When the announcement of "Home Game" came out, I emailed Ginger Scott directly and told her this:

"Imagine the Diamondbacks are down one run. It's bottom of the 9th,
there's a guy on 2nd base. Batter steps up to the plate and smashes
it down the right field line.

Your 2nd base runner starts flying.

The third base coach is winding his arm like a helicopter propeller
and yelling "GO! GO! GO! RUN! RUN! RUN!" at the top of his lungs.

The ball is flying toward home, the runner slides into home plate,
and the ump calls "SAFE!" They've won the game!

Right now, I'm the THIRD BASE COACH!

If I yell as loud as I want, I'll literally hurt my throat.

My heart is about to bust out of my chest."

At the time, the MLB regular season was still in full swing and I am the third base coach for The Philadelphia Phillies. But, I'm screaming at the television. :-) I was hyped, ramped up, and soooo excited to hear about this book.

Peyton Johnson is the daughter of Reed and Nolan Johnson, who we met and came to love in the Waiting On The Sidelines series. They will always be my OG, YA babies. Peyton Johnson is a cheerleader, she's smart, and she's got goals. She does, however, have to deal with the perks and downsides, of being the daughter of a wealthy NFL football star, and the fact that he is now the coach of his former high school's football team.

Wyatt Stone is the new quarterback in town. Son of a fallen firefighter, devoted to his recently widowed mother, and on track to break every Arizona high school football record set by......Reed Johnson. And Wyatt, is the new kid in town, who will be playing for the new school, in their small town, which has created a rivalry on and off the field, between the teams, and the town.

So when Peyton meets Wyatt, she's working at the local pancake house. Nolan, her mother, believes it "builds character." She doesn't know who Wyatt is yet but she sets on FIRE the moment she sees him. I believe it's love at first sight.

The story is full of all of the things you expect from Ginger Scott. You get the angst. You get blossoming 18 year olds who are just beginning to experience their new adulthood. But you also get the conflict that comes with rivalries and how to handle the fine line between still being a gawky teenager, yet being a new adult, and how to deal with it all with some kind of maturity.

Overall, this is an amazing and wonderful next generation story that will give you "all the feels." You will not be able to put it down. I lost a massive amount of sleep because I simply would not put it down until I had to. As per usual, I was a little bit sad when it ended. Good stories do that to you.

Now I'm crossing my fingers that we'll see more of Peyton and Wyatt sooner rather than later.

Book Review: The Book Of Unheard Hits: #unheardhit by MV Meadow

Before I get to the book itself, I want to share a few things that need to be here right out of the gate:

1. Congratulations! It is not easy to write a book. Any book. Anyone who writes a book and puts it out there for public consumption, and criticism, is brave. This is the MV Meadow's debut as a published author. I give a star just for being able to accomplish that challenging feat, because it's not easy to do. The number of hours that go onto writing, and eventually publishing, a 301 page book, is only imaginable if one is actively doing it, or if one has worked with authors on a regular basis.

2. I am absolutely, positively, completely, and irrevocably in love with this author for his bravery and daring choices. The content alone is an unfathomed amount of his soul spilled onto the pages. There are things in here that I didn't know about him, that I presumed I'd know by now. The ability for the reader to "collaboread" and collaborate with the author, and the never seen before format, set this apart from any other book about lyrics and/or songwriting that has ever been published. Trust me...I LOOKED! One can't love the daring choice to write the book in the format presented.

2. Full disclosure: I personally know the author. Writing a book review for an author one personally knows is actually more difficult to do, especially a review that's completely honest, and if necessary, critical. Since I have written reviews for authors I do know personally, I did ask him if he wanted me to write a review. The caveat to that, was that he would have NO knowledge in advance regarding what I would write. That is the same caveat I give to EVERY author I know personally. He gave his blessing. That, is also daring and brave.

Let's get to The Book Of Unheard Hits...

The format is the best place to dive into the book. There is Part One and Part Two. In Part One, the format starts with a singer and a bit of their biographical information. A description of that musician's influence on the author's life follows. MV Meadow goes on to add some of his own personal experiences that tie him and that artist, together. For example: Billie Holiday. Of all the singers in the book, Billie Holiday is number one. There's one line that stood out, and that line made me think, "she is the icon of the icons for him."

"Nothing sounds prettier than Billie Holiday's pain." Full stop. That one line says everything a reader needs to know about how the author feels about Billie Holiday.

Following the biographical and autobiographical connections is an original song, written by the author. The lyrics that follow are a mix of the heart and soul of the author. What follows is music paper. It's time for the reader to interact with the author and the lyrics by setting the lyrics to music. The type of music style they wish to use is left to the "collaboreader."

In Part Two, the lyrics are original songs by the author. How they came about is shared with the reader, and the reader is encouraged to set the lyrics to any style of music they wish. Other information about approaching the lyrics is part of the introduction and gives the reader free rein to do whatever they feel is best with the lyrics. The reader now becomes the decision maker when deciding if the chorus should go after a first verse, if there should be an instrumental solo, etc. You get the idea. There's a ton of freedom here for each reader.

So, is that it? No. I couldn't put the book down once I started. I even started to form music in my head as I read each song. I approached reading the lyrics as poetry without music. I am not a writer of songs. I've never even attempted to write a song. It's simply not one of my gifts. I can set words to music, and I can sing the Hell out of ANY song put in front of me. But writing lyrics isn't my gift.

This author is a singer, musician, a writer, a curator, and more. But HIS gift of ALL gifts is writing lyrics!!! Writing this book is a gift to every single person whoever wanted to set words to music, but didn't have a clue on where to start. Now you have your start. There are lyrics for every single person's personally favorite genre, because you get to decide how you want these words to sound.

All of the lyrics are under copyright, so if you intend to make commercial use of the songs written in the book, you must contact the author. You are given all of the information to do that at the beginning, along with encouragement to record it, hashtag it, and share it. Remember, you are a "collaboreader," so collaboration with the author is encouraged.

If you're asking, "what if there's not lyrics that speak to me personally?" I guarantee that there are. There are song lyrics in here that fit every situation. A breakup, true love, feeling powerful, feeling powerless, and so on. There is a song in the book called, "Hold My Hand." After I read the lyrics, I put a purple Post-It note on that song, drew a heart, and put my and my husband's name into the heart. The lyrics to "Self-Indulgent Prick" caught me by surprise. After I read those lyrics, I wrote a notation on the page that said, "that's what I call 'IN. YOUR. FACE.'" I *really* LOVED those lyrics! There are FIFTY SONGS in this book, so don't be surprised if a song hits you in good places, and even not-so-good places.

Personally, I've been singing since I was 5 years old. Every song I love is lyrics intensive. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy a good dance mix, I do. I don't mind listening to a mix that repeats a certain phrase or chorus over and over. As a performer, lyrics are the delivery of a story or a message, and I prefer songs that have something to say. Every single song in The Book Of Unheard Hits has something to say about everything. I can't think of a single topic that doesn't appear in one of these FIFTY songs.

I decided to NOT critique any of the lyrics or any specific song. They are all works of art, art is subjective, and the author poured heart and soul into each word. I will say that every single set of lyrics in this book can be set into any genre the reader chooses. You CAN take a song called "Self-Indulgent Prick," you can have it be in your face, and you can turn it into a slow ballad, a fierce rock song, or hip hop, or Jazz, etc. You take whatever is inside of YOU and make it YOUR song, YOUR way.

My original rating was going to be 4.5 out of 5 stars. Because it's a first book and there's always room for improvement. And as I was editing this review I thought, "do I want to sit down and put music to some of these lyrics?" Did I want to at least try to do something I've never done before, now that the barrier of writing lyrics is out of my way? YES! For me, that's the purpose of the entire book. I added that 1/2 star right back in. FIVE "completely knocked me out" STARS!!! The book is available on Amazon and there is a sample that you can check out before ordering.

Off The Charts, Mind-Bending, Incredible Book! "Cowboy Villain Damsel Duel" by Ginger Scott

Ginger Scott steps away from her "usual" with Cowboy Villain Damsel Duel. And I am so glad that she did. Apparently, Ginger had this one sitting in her head for a while and it took some encouragement for her to put it out there for her readers. She really put herself out on cliff with this one. And she was 100% successful in pulling it off.

This book is one of the most amazing books I've ever read. I really don't read books like this. But if Ginger Scott writes it, I'm reading it! And I've never, ever been sorry that I made that promise to myself after reading Waiting On The Sidelines, so many years ago.

After mulling over what to say for over a week, all I can come up with is that it's amazing, it's twisty, it's curvy, and you have no idea where Ms. Scott is going to take you as you turn the pages. I loved having to THINK while reading this book. YOU will think hard while reading this book. You won't be able to avoid it. You'll ask yourself, "where is she going to take me now?" over and over. That's okay. Go freely where Ms. Scott wants you to go and you will NOT be sorry you did.

The book will be slow and steady at the beginning. It WILL pick up pace and it will throw you down the rabbit hole. Or does it? This a hands down, mind-blowing story, that will leave you with your jaw on the floor at the end. I am STILL trying to figure out certain things. This book is so popular and so mind-bending, it required the creation of a closed discussion group, for just THIS book, for those of us who have read it, to talk about the book. We really needed it.

My best advice to Ginger Scott's readers is to just get the book and read it. Let it take you down the rabbit hole. If Ginger Scott is new to you, I see no reason why you can't start here. I say read the other reviews. They'll all say the same thing. We really want to tell you that this happened, or that happened, but we really can't because of spoilers.

"Whaaaaat?"
"Who.....?"
"HUH?"

At 70% in, I literally shook my phone and said "damnnnnnn youuuuuu Gingerrrrrrrr!" out loud.

In 2013, Ginger launched her first novel, Waiting On The Sidelines. I surprisingly loved it. YA was not my genre. I never expected to enjoy it. When Wild Reckless came out in 2015, it immediately shot up to the TOP of the list as my favorite Ginger Scott book. Cowboy Villain Damsel Duel just completely knocked Wild Reckless off the top of my list and bumped it down to second place.

Go get the book, start reading, and let yourself go. You will love this ride!!!!!

Female Drummer Kicks It In "Drummer Girl" by Ginger Scott

Arizona Wakefield is a girl who plays snare drum in her school's marching band. She's not confident about a lot of things, but she knows how to work it on her snare drum and she kicks butt on set with refined precision and expertise. She's got an issue she can't talk about. Even her parents are in chosen denial about it.

Jesse Barringer has a once famous, "one hit wonder" deadbeat dad, who is still trying to find ways to use Jesse's singing talent for his own gain. His father has no shame in trying to exploit his talented son who only wants to sing in his band, and like many other teenagers, wants to make it in music. Jesse's also bipolar. He's emotional, he's got a temper, he's coming unglued under all of the stress from his father, and he's barely holding onto his sanity.

Ginger Scott has always included issues like gang violence, the ups and downs of high school, Autism, suicide, the barriers of social status, physical disabilities (seen and unseen), the aftermath of surviving a school shooting, alcoholism, being a teenaged father, and so much more.

Some people know someone who has Autism. Some people know someone who is physically disabled. Some people know someone who is an alcoholic. EVERYBODY knows someone who has a mental illness or mental health issue, diagnosed or undiagnosed, even if that someone is themselves.

In Drummer Girl...THIS BOOK IS AMAZING...the issue tackled here is mental illness, the stigmas attached to them (which Ginger Scott strips away), and how to talk about it openly. And like every other book Ginger has written, she geniusly weaves an extremely real issue into a fictional, contemporary romance, that is thrilling, filled with emotion, and enjoyable.

If you expect a clean, sugary, and sappy love story, you won't get that here. But you will get a love story that shows how relationships take work. Hard work. Any relationship worth having, is worth the work you put into it. Jesse and Arizona's relationship is no different.

To read Jesse and Arizona's journey will give you all "the feels."

You will get mad when Jesse gets angry. You will feel the angst that Arizona feels when she takes on the pain that Jesse feels. You will probably SCREAM at Arizona's parents to open their eyes and deal with it. I did.

I want a book that can rip my heart out, tinker with it, and then put it back, all fixed up, without leaving me hanging. "Drummer Girl" gave me all of that and then, more.

You might be overwhelmed by two teenagers, who are not just trying to foster a relationship. But they're also fighting their own demons, trying to help each other cope, and trying to overcome all of the other hurdles that a teenager goes through. And this is on top of the intense, typically hormone-driven life of a teenager. Ginger Scott guides these two through those hurdles with impeccable grace and care. She uses real talk, her characters' love for music, just enough grit, and the power that love can have, to get you there. Trust her to carry you all the way to the end. You'll be glad you did.

One of these characters speaks openly about their mental health challenges. The other really doesn't talk about it, primarily because they don't really know exactly why they're taking medication. Ginger Scott doesn't just give you a romance. Trust me, there is plenty of that along with some mature sexual situations. She will also give you a spot on, honest look at how ALL the characters handle all of these issues.

Overall, this is majestically written. It's definitely a thought provoker. And it's got everything you want in any contemporary romance. Story depth, character depth, conflict, emotional tugs, and a more than satisfying ending.

Hold My Breath by Ginger Scott

There is an unwritten rule that when a friend breaks up with a girlfriend or boyfriend, it is NOT okay to date their -ex. But, what happens when the person you've loved since forever dated your brother and he DIED?

This is the emotional battle that Will Hollister has to fight. With that battle, his training, and a secret he's been hiding from the woman he's loved his entire life, no wonder Will Hollister feels like he's in another plane diving toward Earth.

These battles go in the same direction for our heroine, Maddy Woodsen. She's a swimmer who has the potential to win Gold at the Olympics and decides to take a year off from school to train and compete. The love of her life, Evan Hollister, was killed along with Will and Evan's parents in a plane crash.

So we have a dead lover/brother, a man living with "Survivors' Guilt," a girl who loved a young man who was not who he appeared to be, and another young man who is also taking time off to train and compete at the behest of Maddy's father and coach, an Olympian himself.

Lives are in knots here. There are secrets to be revealed. There is information neither of them really wants to hear but they both NEED to hear.

Will Hollister is a hero in this novel by Ginger Scott. After the plane crash, he didn't so well. His grieving process was destructive. Training alongside Maddy is exactly what he needed to get out of his pit of guilt. The responsibilities he's taken on would spread even the most devoted and organized of persons, too thin.

And Maddy? Well, she's unfortunately oblivious to the real world. And she needs someone to give her a look at what real life outside of college, and outside of training to win a medal, is like. Because Will has always loved Maddy, he will have to be the one to be honest with her about all of these things.

Overall, I enjoyed this book because of the adversity that Will Hollister had to overcome. To get from losing his entire family in a plane crash that he somehow survived, to being asked to train for the Olympics by a coach he most respects, Will Hollister has gone to Hell, then back and then into a different kind of Hell.

I enjoyed how Will treated Maddy like a smart young woman. Sometimes he coddled her but we tend to coddle the ones we love in order to protect them from physical and emotional harm.

I give this book FIVE lovable stars. The secondary characters in this novel are not be forgotten either. They help Will fill in the answers to the mysteries in this book. Will's uncle, and only other living family member, is a walking book of wisdom. Maddy's best friend and nursing school classmate is a laugh riot. Her teasing and innocent flirtations with Will make for good humor in all of the right places.

Ginger Scott has never failed in writing anything less than greatness. The emotion is always just right. The romantic scenes, whether simply sweet, or adult and piping HOT, are always spot on! She has perfected the "first kiss."

Three years and three months ago, Ginger Scott published "Waiting On The Sidelines." That novel was a lot of "firsts" for me. I have NEVER missed reading every book Ginger Scott has ever written, and I have never been disappointed with her stories. Her characters are genuine and her stories are still entertaining. And what's a book if it doesn't take you on a journey? This book succeeded in taking me on another journey outside of my own day to day grind.

I truly do appreciate EVERY single novel Ginger Scott writes.

Book Review: In Your Dreams by Ginger Scott

In "In Your Dreams," we meet Casey Coffield. Casey's a DJ with an extraordinary talent for mixing songs so well, bodies on the dance floor are hypnotized by the beat he lays down for them. But, according to a few others, like Casey's father, Casey's a screwup.

After a video surfaces on YouTube of Murphy singing a song she wrote called, "In Your Dreams, Casey Coffield," Casey realizes that whoever the girl in this video is may not be HIS biggest fan. But, he immediately becomes HER biggest fan. Casey is enamored with her voice. He's convinced that he can make her a star.

Murphy Sullivan is a singer with purple hair, grey eyes, and a raspy voice. She works with kids by day part-time teaching music to kids in elementary school. By night, she signs herself up for Open Mic nights at a local bar called "Paul's." And, she's acquired a bit of a following. She's got a brother, Lane, who has Down's Syndrome and lives at home with Lane and their mother. She's college-educated and lacks the confidence she needs to put herself out there and go for that record deal that she wants badly but doesn't quite yet realize that she deserves to have one.

Casey knows Murphy was in the same high school class as he was but, he simply can't remember who she is or why she would write a song bearing his name that is NOT meant to be a compliment. What he does know is that her voice is something that needs to be heard. The other thing that Casey is completely sure of is that Murphy is not the type of girl that you use as a "wham, bam, thank you ma'am," or a "love 'em and leave 'em." Chase just knows by something instinctual that he needs to move slow with her, work with her, get to know her and that she's the kind you work to keep.

I've heard many refer to this particular novel of Ms. Scott's as a "slow burner." And guess what? If Casey's relationship with Murphy is the kind of relationship where Casey needs to work for her, then a "slow burner" it must be. You can't have the relationship going at one speed and the book flying on all pistons. Ms. Scott definitely chose right when setting the tone and the speed at the same pace. That does NOT mean that you will be able to put the book DOWN. Oh no! That is NOT going to happen. There's a big difference between a "slow burner" and a "slow reader."

Ms. Scott displayed two her best gifts (she has many more) in this novel just as she's done in her others: writing the first kiss scene and the "first time" scene. As I read the first kiss scene in "In Your Dreams," what I saw in my head was literally slowed down to slow motion. Oh GAWD was it absolutely fabulous. You WILL go back and read it over and over. I even read this a few times OUT LOUD because I wanted to hear what I would sound like if I was the one reading the audiobook version.

The coveted "first time" scene? I can't say much about the scene itself because that would be telling. Trust me, you don't want it spoiled for you. But, let's just say that the "always willing to be daring" Ms. Scott went a different kind of "all the way" with it. And the best part? She's so damned GREAT at how she writes these scenes, one feels like one is somewhat of a voyeur looking in on it all. Man, oh man, did I love "watching" THAT.

I honestly could rave on and on about everything. The characters are all multi-dimensional, including the secondary characters. Ms. Scott always gives multiple layers to all of her characters. You'll definitely want to know HOW Murphy knows who Casey is and, why he doesn't remember HER. You'll probably be mad at Casey for a few pages. Trust me, you'll get past it.

I would have liked a longer, more detailed ending as well. But I just wanted more novel because I love reading Ginger Scott's books and I'm greedy for as much of her story writing as I can get.

I liked how the book ended. The way the book was brought to its end could have been longer. But, it gives me a chance to make up my own theories about some of the time frames not covered.

"In Your Dreams" is definitely a FIVE-STAR novel. If it rises to #1 on Amazon like other Ginger Scott novels have done, I won't be surprised. Not even a little bit.

I received an advanced reading copy (ARC) of this book in exchange for an honest review. Ms. Scott's timing is somewhat magical. As I was writing to her about some really BAD family news and asking her if the ARC's were ready yet because I needed escape so badly, she was sending the ARC to me. And I mean it came in the email as I was writing the email to her. Definitely magic! Just like Ms. Scott and just like "In Your Dreams."

Bring on the withdrawal until the next book! How does one quell the withdrawal of the Ginger Scott novel? By reading all of her books over again, of course!

I am the Irish-Catholic son of two Democrats. I grew up in poverty in an all black Philadelphia neighborhood during the 1970’s and 1980’s. I knew nothing of the differences between the Republican and Democrat parties except that the Republicans were known to bring us into wars. In fact, I was told that the Republican candidate for President (Ronald Reagan) would certainly bring us into a NUCLEAR war if he were elected. My paralyzing fear of being drafted and dying in a war led me to one conclusion: Republicans must be BAD! I registered as a Democrat when I turned 18 and I voted occasionally, but I had no serious interest in politics or the political process.

Many years later, at the end of President Clinton’s second term, I began to notice obvious differences in the candidates for President. Al Gore came off as an empty promise maker and panderer, while George W. Bush came off as sincere, but he was arrogant too. My adult sense of perception now picked up on this when I’d never noticed such things about politicians in the past. By this time, I was the proprietor of a modestly successful small business and, I was a father. Even though the Democrat candidate (Gore) lost the election, I felt no personal defeat as a registered Democrat. The truth was that I didn’t trust him based upon hearing him speak. I didn’t even vote in that election. After the beginning of the war in Iraq, I became upset and I wished to see Bush and Cheney removed from the White House. I voted against them. Although I was deeply saddened that they won reelection, something began to make sense to me. They actually won by a LARGE margin. I realized that a huge number of Americans must actually agree with them and with the war. This was a difficult thing to accept, but accept it I did.

By the time the Bush era was coming to an end, I noticed the same Gore-like hollow promise making personality coming from a new Democrat candidate, Barack Obama. I immediately didn’t trust him just as I didn’t trust Gore, but I gave him my vote because the other choice, war-mongering McCain and his laughable VP choice was not an option for me. I was totally disgusted with Obama’s non-stop speeches and unrealistic promises, but I felt that this was going to be a choice based upon the lesser of two evils. I voted for Obama then, and again four years later. But I do recall feeling some guilt when I pushed that Obama button the second time. I didn’t even know what Mitt Romney stood for. I had just heard some bad things about him from Democrat friends and so I made my choice ignorantly.

It seems that my party went completely berserk after that. I found myself engaged in endless online debates with former co-workers and classmates wherein any objection to Obama’s policies, (many of which I STRONGLY disagreed with) were met with scorn, accusation and red hot vitriol. I was attacked personally. My intelligence was insulted. I was labeled a “racist” countless times. All of this came in response to the simple act of disagreeing with the President’s policies. The Trayvon Martin story seemed to induce a psychosis in many of my Democrat friends. The craziness snowballed and seemed to grow exponentially by the day. I noticed that many other moderate Democrats were experiencing the same phenomenon. It became obvious that our party was becoming EXTREME in its ideologies. Anyone who did not agree 100% with the MSNBC-style narrative was condemned, ridiculed, and criticized relentlessly.

The very first time I pushed the button for a Republican candidate was in the New Jersey gubernatorial election for Chris Christie’s 2^nd term. I actually felt like a traitor while doing that, but I also felt that my party was going off the deep end and it desperately needed a smack in the face to bring it back to reality. Then I voted all Republican again during the mid-terms in an attempt to send that same message. I was relieved to see that so many independents and moderate Democrats did the exact same thing. This validated what I was feeling. It also let me know that I was not alone.

Here we are at the end of Obama’s 2^nd term. I am so happy to see him go, but I fear that a Hillary win will only mean 4 (or 8) more years of the same horrible Obama policies. I will surely vote Republican this time too. I will not call myself a “Republican.” I do not agree with all of the Republican principles. I will admit that I am NOT a Democrat anymore. I simply no longer view the Democrat party with respect. All I see from Democrats is endless, promise-making and pandering to emotional voters. Perhaps if I had been paying more attention to politics, I would have arrived at this conclusion many years ago. As an adult and a father I am looking forward to the future and I’m certain that the Democrat party (in its present incarnation) will only expedite our country’s self-destruction. I do not want that for my son or my future grandchildren.

First Cole is on his way to a romantic trip for the holidays with his boyfriend. While in the airport, the boyfriend's ex shows up and PROPOSES. And Cole's boyfriend ACCEPTS. Talk about being dumped and in one of the most awful ways.

After Cole heads home and as Christmas draws closer, Cole decides to get outside and get some air. So he heads down to his favorite bar McGregor's for a beer and some socialization.

Owen Mcgregor, the owner of the bar, notices Cole and can tell something is wrong. So he proposes that he and Cole engage in some fun activities in the twelve days leading up till Christmas in order to cheer Cole up. With Cole still feeling the reeling pain from being dumped and Owen wanting to be a friend to Cole, even though he's attracted to him, the two embark on an extremely romantic journey.

Overall, the book is close to perfect. As in perfectly sweet. Cole and Owen are really adorable together. I picture Owen as more of the flannel wearing, rugged type and I picture Cole as more of the "wouldn't be caught dead in skinny jeans but fashionable" type.

I loved both characters. They're written with a ton of honestly. As in, this is something that could really happen. It wouldn't happen in the short time frame of 12 days but it could definitely happen in real life.

There's a surprise visit in the story and decisions need to be made. But which one has to choose and which direction will he go? That's part of the fun of this book.

If you're in the mood to read a sweet, romantic book over the holidays to get you into the spirit, then THIS book will do that for you. It's a definite four stars, don't miss this story, type of book.

Review:

There comes a time after reading an author you've loved since the very first time you laid eyes on her first book, that you don't need to decide WHY it deserves 5 out of 5 stars. You need to decide just how many of the five-star fabulous facets about the specific book you're reading by that author you simply MUST put into your review. There are exactly THREE authors for me where these times apply. Ginger Scott is one of those three authors and THIS is one of those times.

When I finished "Wicked Restless," I was speechless. I didn't know if I should read it again and make a list of things to talk about. I didn't know just how many different emotions I just put myself through. I had no idea how many of those emotions I could I tell you about without ruining the magic of the story.

When we finished "Wild Reckless," the story of Owen Harper, satiated and massively in love, we didn't know Andrew was getting his own story. However, you could feel it in your GUT that his story NEEDED to be told.

Andrew and Emma meet as teenagers. Andrew is an academic genius attending college while still in high school but, needs to attend the mandatory gym class everybody hates and he has to go to his high school to take the class. Ugh. Square dancing. I remember having to do square dancing in gym. I really did think to myself, "why the heck is she making Andrew square dance?" DUH! So Andrew could finagle himself across from Emma and be her square dancing partner! Yes, of course I smacked myself for that. But that should be a testament to Ginger Scott's writing. Sometimes some of the most common things, which should be obvious, aren't. If there is something Ginger Scott is NOT, it's predictable.

Their romance as teenagers comes to a massive and tragic halt and these two don't come together again until they're both in college. Andrew is attending college on a hockey scholarship and Emma is now Pre-Med. It is NOT a pretty reunion. In fact, it's the exact opposite of pretty. It's ugly and downright nasty.

These two drove me INSANE! I thought that by the time I was finished, I would have completely white hair, and I'd be gumming my food while endlessly rocking in a chair and mumbling "Anbloo-N-Embah, Anbloo-N-Embah." My emotions pulled in every direction and a few new ones. Up, down, this way, that way, here go sideways, throw your leg up behind your head! My gut and my HEART were like two pinballs in a pinball machine but with 100 different bumpers to smack the balls around.

There's a part in this book where Andrew is "away" at "school" because of a decision made on that tragic night where Andrew and Emma parted. And he's writing letters. Tons and tons of letters to Emma. And because of the letters and where I was in the story, and having a tiny speck of an idea where the book was going, I thought of the words "When I stepped out into the bright sunlight...," the song "Stay Gold" by Stevie Wonder began in my head, and I started an ugly cry.

My heart was simply broken for Andrew at that point. I believe that even at his age at this point in the book, that he did what he did for love. Not infatuation, not major like, but epic love.

Did I love Andrew and Emma together? Yeah, I did. I got to a frustrated point. You know, the point when you're actually talking BACK to your book? "Why don't you just TELL him?" "And you, you dope, tell HER what she obviously doesn't know!" But that's part of Ginger Scott's magic. She weaves and spins and twists and finally, you have this beautiful, glorious story of two people who need to be together in order for both of them to be able to breathe.

I typically don't refer to other reviews but in this case, I'm making an exception. The drama in this book, in a review (or two) I read, was described as being "far-fetched." WHAT? Ginger Scott infuses real life situations into every single novel she writes. The style of writing? Well, let's go back to the reference from "The Outsiders" up above.

Back when S.E. Hinton wrote that book, she infused real life gang drama into a tale about love, hate, heartbreak, and young people coming into their own despite all of the obstacles and hurdles. Ginger Scott is a fresh, newer fiction author that infuses real life drama into tales about love, hate, heartbreak and young people coming into their own despite all of the obstacles and hurdles.

If you read "The Outsiders" when you were in school, then you can easily see, as I do, Ginger Scott's stories of both Harper brothers, being on the grades 7-12 English reading list. There may be all of these new genre names NOW but it's still the type of fiction where you walk away with an entire research paper length analyzation in your head. Ginger Scott is writing the new "classic" fiction. One doesn't need to wait until the book is decades old to make it a part of you.

“Alright, Harper. Who’s the target tonight?” Trent leans over me, startling me out of my trance, grabbing my next beer and taking it for his own.

“Hey, dickhead,” I say. He holds up a hand and orders another one, sliding it to me. “I’m pretty sure it’s your turn this time.”

His face falls and his complexion turns green. Trent and I have this game we play with one another. It started as a drunken dare a few months ago, when he goaded me into taking a girl home from Majerle’s Pub. I’m not suave; I don’t have great pick-up lines. I usually wait for girls to hit on me. I wait for easy. When Trent dared me, I came up with my own set-up—I stole a girl’s wallet. I returned it to her later, pretending I’d found it. She was so grateful she spent the rest of the night sitting on my lap, her arms looped around my neck, her lips sucking on my skin, her hands soon finding their way in my pants.

That first girl taught me to never bring any of them to our apartment. I go to theirs now. It’s easier to leave then it is to kick someone out.

“Fine, I’ll go. But next time, I get to pick your girl,” I say, tipping my beer back to drink what’s left before leaving the bottle on the bar behind me and pointing at my friend.

“Dude, whatever. You know it’s your turn anyway,” he says.

“My choice next time,” I remind him as I walk backward. I know it’s his turn, and I also know he doesn’t really like taking the dare. Trent’s too nice, and he usually ends up dating the girl for weeks after. He doesn’t like to be an asshole. Or maybe he just doesn’t like people to say bad things about him. Maybe there’s no difference between the two.

I couldn’t give a shit what people say about me. Let ’em talk.

I make one pass through the crowded bar, letting my eyes roam over the dance floor and the tables that line the back wall on the way to the bathrooms. It’s a Friday night, so there are lots of girls here. It’s the middle of the semester, too, so they’re all ready to party—no finals to worry about. There’s one group that seems like an easy target, a blonde on the end who keeps trying to talk the others into dancing. I hover around the restrooms waiting for my shot, and when she finally drags the group of girls with her out to the dance floor, I walk back through the crowd, passing their table.

So easy.
Their wallets and purses are all piled in the center of the table except for a red bag looped over the back of a chair, the ID sticking out of the top. I drag my hand along the bottom of the table, and as I pass the red handbag I grab the small plastic card poking from it, tucking it into the sleeve around my palm. I glance up to make eye contact with Trent, and raise the corner of my mouth in a smirk.

“Dude, you are so slick at this. Seriously, if you flunk out of the engineering program you should just turn to a life of crime.”

I slide into my stool and look away from him. I know he was just saying words, but the joke doesn’t sit well with me. I have a chip on my shoulder. It’s my fucking chip, and I earned it. He also doesn’t know how many nights I walk that line with Harley, fixing bets that are illegal in the first place. Trent just thinks I like the workout boxing gives me.

“Well…let’s see it? Who’s the lucky lady?”

Book Review: The Girl I Was Before by Ginger Scott

The Girl I Was Before is Ginger Scott's eighth novel. I have read every single one of them from the first one, in order, right down to this one. Allow me to share with you, something that is highly unlikely to happen between myself and another author: Ginger Scott is the ONLY author who has earned FIVE STARS from me on EVERY other novel she's penned. This one is NO different.

The third and final (we think) installment in The Falling Series, this is the story of Paige and Houston. From the first two books in The Falling Series, fans will recall that Paige is Cass' fraternal twin sister and that they are absolutely nothing alike. When we first meet Paige all the way back in This Is Falling, the story of Nate and Rowe, she is one of Rowe's roommates along with her sister Cass.

We learn that she's the "sorority type" that she likes "hot" athletes who are preferably fraternity brothers and, we also find out that she's a HUGE snob. She goes through the second book in the series, You and Everything After, the story of Nate's brother Ty and Paige's sister Cass, as the same young woman and we find that she's the same at the beginning of this novel as well.

But this time around, Paige has a lot to make up for in regard to her sister Cass (sorry, you have to read the first two to know what that is). Paige also finds out something about her sorority sister and uses social media to her advantage. Or is it to her advantage since technology can be used right back? Even if it's NOT TRUE.

Enter Houston Orr (tribute to Bobby Orr!!!!!). Houston is hardly even close to the type of guy Paige likes. Until she finds herself wanting to like him. And then she finds herself confused because Houston wasn't what she had planned for herself. I fell for Houston almost immediately after being introduced to him. He's tall, nice looking, he's intelligent, and while he's got a nice body and is athletic, he is not an athlete. At first, it might seem he's the pushover, nerd-geek kind of guy. Frankly, I happen to love nerd-geek type of guys. In fact, I married one. Houston may be a nerd-geek type of guy but, he's no pushover. Well, one of the characters in this novel DOES have Houston wrapped around a finger. But again, I can't tell you about that either. But it's worth reading just to find out about it.

Houston is a refreshing character and a much different type of guy than what some of us may be accustomed to in a Ginger Scott novel. Like Mason Street from How We Deal With Gravity, Houston is a little bit older, working, and has other responsibilities he needs to take care of on a daily basis. Houston also has a lot more baggage than many of the other male characters we tend to see in Ms. Scott's novels. However, you're going to love and enjoy all of these differences.

And when Paige's and Houston's worlds collide? The Earth moves!!! The sizzle was hot right away too. These two don't peak and come back down either. Once they begin to rise with one another, they keep on going.

When you get to halfway through this novel, you will wonder what you are going to do when you're finished the other half of it. I sure did. That's never happened to me before. Another Ginger Scott first for me.

And finally, because if I don't wrap it up, I'll just go on and on about this novel, finally, I have to thank Ms. Scott BEYOND just providing me with an advanced reading copy in trade for an honest review. I have to thank her double for allowing me to get my hot little hands on this for a much needed brain break from the hardest college class I've ever taken in my life. And that's after a Bachelor's degree, Nursing school Part One and an endless amount of certifications over the years. I literally wrote to Ms. Scott and told her "I NEED Paige!" THAT was one of the better decisions I've made while taking a class. And I'm convinced I'm getting an "A" because of hard work but also because she gave me what I needed to breathe. This novel wasn't just an amazing read, it was a REVIVAL!

The Girl I Was Before is available right NOW! You can order it pretty much everywhere. I would highly recommend that you order this one and grab up the first two, start reading now, and savor every single second you have with all of these characters.

As for the ending, well, I can't tell you that either. I can say that you will be pleased with it. And, I can tell you to read the Acknowledgements after you've read this novel. Ms. Scott talks about what she may or may not do in the future so don't dare skip it.

I’m slow with my hand, and when she sees my fingers near her cheek, her breath hitches again.

Book Review: "Wild Reckless" by Ginger Scott

This book demanded to be READ. Oh God. I was in tears during the Prologue! Honestly, there's so much to say about Wild Reckless, I have no idea where to even start. But I guess I will start with this: when you get to the end of this review, you're going to read that I gave this book FIVE OUT OF FIVE STARS and that you should just go get it and start reading it. It's simply a book that no one should miss. It would be a CRIME to NOT read it.

Kensington (Kensi) Worth is accustomed to her posh high school in Chicago, she's a fiercely talented piano prodigy destined to study at any of the finest music universities in the world and, she hates the idea of having to leave her school and move to a small town in the middle of nowhere for her senior year.

Owen Harper is Kensi's badass next door neighbor. His destiny appears to have been decided for him when he was just a boy. Owen lives on the dark side and he has absolutely no problem letting anyone see it. Except, are Owen's wild and reckless "bad boy" ways for real? Asking the question would make one presume the answer is "no." Don't presume anything.

In no time at all, Owen's badass attitude and nastiness hits Kensi right where it hurts the most. It's downright devastating. Once Kensi catches her breath from that heart-stopping blow, she realizes that she's never taken shit from anyone before and starts to call Owen out. Then the good in Owen begins to show. Day by day by day.

Kensi and Owen are addictive. These two took me through a range of emotions I've never experienced by reading ONE book. I cried, I was horrified at times, terrified, sometimes I was pissed and I laughed too. I don't like ferris wheels because of I'm afraid of heights but this whole book sent me sky high. I don't like rollercoasters either having been on at least one and this book rollercoastered me all over the place. I couldn't stop reading but I had to stop and catch my own breath with this one.

When Ginger Scott said that these characters grabbed her, I believe her 1000%. These two wild and reckless but extremely mature young adults grabbed me. By the heart and the guts. If you aren't rooting for these two by the end of Chapter One, you might be doing it wrong. This is the one ride you get on and when the ride ends, you just keep going back for more.

I've had the pleasure of reading and reviewing ALL of Ginger Scott's novels and I have to admit that this one quickly became my favorite one. Ms. Scott always tackles real issues and writes real characters and here she handles every single one of these issues with total grace. She makes sure both of these characters keep their dignity through some massively difficult situations. That's simply not a skill that every author has. Ms. Scott has it in spades.

It's five stars out of five (see my star ratings below). There are many things that come along where one thinks to themselves, "gotta have it, can't live without it." This book is definitely one of those things. After reading Ms. Scott's first book, Waiting On The Sidelines, I said, "if she writes it, I'll read it." And although I'm ready for the next book that I know is coming soon, this one will stay with me for a long, long time and I will be re-reading it again and again in the future.

Review:

Even though this is the fourth book in the Sex, Love & Stiletto series, this book can be read as a standalone as well. Emma and Cassidy (Alex) are bright, cute, and sexy characters without being overdone.

In general, I enjoyed the book and reading it was a pleasure. Probably the best part of the book overall is that these two already have a rough past with each other and their nearly non-existent recognition of each other in the present is the biggest challenge these two have to face. There are tons of misunderstandings and a lot of untold information that resulted in Emma being ditched at the altar. How these two break through some extremely thick walls is well-written and it all makes sense. There isn't anything convoluted or unbelievable. I buy these two as being in a previous relationship. I buy how they deal with each other at work because they have to be professional.

If you like to read good, solid romance you will enjoy "The Trouble With Love."

Book Review: "Losing It: A Collection Of VCards"

Losing It is a collection of chapters from various authors. Each chapter is either an extension, or another point of view or, an addition to a previously written book. Each one of these written chapters is about the loss of virginity of a character and in some cases, the characters.

I admit, the first chapter I read was the chapter written by the author I was most interested in reading because I'd read all of her novels. Her chapter was the couple's first time from the other party's point of view. Because I read the novel, I didn't need set up or backstory. For the rest of the chapters, the backstory or set up worked sometimes. Sometimes, it simply didn't and there were some I simply couldn't read because I didn't know enough.

One particular chapter, if I had to guess, was the first time the author had ever written a sex scene or love scene. Because the use of language by the characters was immature and a huge turnoff. From the female character's point of view, being full of cheer because her boyfriend was rubbing her "boobs" blew the mood for me. I read the whole thing just to see how many immature terms for the human body were used. You buy it and read it to find out how many times that is.

Overall, it wasn't a bad idea for these authors to join forces to create this type of book. On the other hand, there are various reasons why it might not be for everyone. For example, some don't like various genres. This doesn't mean you won't like the book. In the case of one particular chapter, where one of the characters is a newly created vampire, I got interested in an author I'd never read before and will be interested in looking into reading that particular book/series in the future.

In the book, with few exceptions, this book takes place in South New Jersey while the movie takes place in Ridley Park which is in PA (Delaware County). I think the movie people figured out that Pat, a huge Eagles fan, belonged in Pennsylvania.

Here's everything in the book that no one will like:

1. Pat's father is barely a character in the book, Robert DeNiro is movie magic,
2. Tiffany spends most of the book running behind Pat and never speaks to him,
3. In the book, Pat was in the hospital for FOUR YEARS for what seemed like a man who got pissed for finding his wife cheating, not for a mental illness. Who gets put in a mental institution for beating the shit out of the guy who screwed your wife?
4. Like the movie, Pat's diagnosis is never disclosed which is potentially dangerous as it can lead to people thinking all mental illnesses are the same.
5. Pat calling the mental facility "the bad place," and calling his divorce from Nikki, "apart time" has to be the most childish crap I've ever heard come out of an adult character's head. What's worse is that the author chose to use this terminology throughout the entire book.
6. Not telling Pat anything and hiding everything from him was a horrible idea. It shows the author's naiveté and lack of knowledge about mental health issues.
7. The fact that Pat worshipped the ground Nikki walked on yet, never questioned why she never showed up, made no sense.
8. Except for Pat, all of the characters are really just non-characters with names. They have no depth and they rarely speak. I would say that 95% of the entire book is Pat narrating and every other word is "Nikki."

All in all, it was an easy read. Had I not seen the movie, I think my review of the book would be the same. In a book where the main character is dealing with a mental illness and trying to live in the world with that illness, I expect to know the diagnosis, I expect the symptoms to be made known and I expect to understand why one might be having some of the troubles that come with that particular illness. This book does NONE of that.
