The barge's arrival was scheduled for Friday night, but has been pushed back to Wednesday. The time of its arrival is not yet available.

Muskegon Lake will be unsafe for ice fishing for at least a week after the barge breaks the ice, said Nathan Jandt, an employee at North Muskegon bait shop Adam's Angler Archer.

Ice fishing conditions already are marginal because an early January thaw melted the ice, and subsequent snows insulated the lake surface, making it slushy, Jandt said. He estimated that most parts of Muskegon Lake have 4 or 5 inches of ice, with some snow and slush on top.

Safety guidelines dictate ice fishermen should wait for about 8 inches of ice when it forms under snowy conditions, Jandt said, though 4 inches of ice is safe if it forms during drier weather.

Just for Fun Friday!
Boat anglers have been trolling around the piers, in the channel and into Muskegon Lake. Few salmon have been caught as anglers were having a problem with weeds getting tangled around the line. Try plugs in chrome with a red head or anything that glows.

Muskegon River - Salmon and some brown trout have been caught.

First sighting of 5 salmon in the Pere Marquette south branch two days ago but nothing yesturday nor today .. heard they are in Hesperia at the damn but haven't seen any fishermen there to back up that statement - must be fish-on in Muskegon Good Luck!
If you have any Muskegon area fishing reports to share, please post a comment below!

Muskegon Fishing Report 03/06/2010

We caught 1 Walleye, 1 Steelhead (big one), and 2 Northern Pike. It was a nice morning. It was weird fishing in open water right next to ice and there was a half dozen ice fisherman on the ice.

We fished with Deep Diver Rapalla's & Bombers.....off of planer boards. The bombers caught 3 out of the 4 fish (green & orange)

Brent, we launched right at the causeway and trolled the Muskegon River mouth area. . Walleye season shuts down March 15.
It’s like Facebook for hunters. A community of Hunters that you can discuss and share stories on Hunting.

Social networking has become all the rage over the last few years with popular social networking and status sites such as Facebook and Twitter came on the online seen.

When it comes to online social networking, websites are commonly used. These websites are known as social sites. Social networking websites function like an online community of internet users. Depending on the website in question, many of these online community members share common interests in hobbies, religion, or politics. Once you are granted access to a social networking website you can begin to socialize. This socialization may include reading the profile pages of other members and possibly even contacting them.

We decided on the hunting theme to fill a void. We believe there is a tremendous market for a hunting social network as there is an estimated 25 million hunters nationwide, says Brent Vanderstelt of Your Travel Buddy.

"The actual hunting population may range from 23 million to 43.7 million", is according to The National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Related Recreation, which used 2001 data, much of it from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service... "Much false or misleading information on these numbers is often cited by critics of hunting. But it is the task of the USF&W Service to gather and keep track of the actual numbers, so it is their information our decisions must be governed by".

However, the actual numbers of people becoming hunters is dropping each year. For every 100 hunters who no longer hunt due to encroaching age, health issues, or passing away, on average only about 69 new hunters join their ranks.

It’s my hope that by tapping into the popularity of social networking that we can increase the number of hunters nationally and make the sport what it once was.

As we grow our membership base, we hope to add member benefits such as travel discounts, featured big game hunts, and other discounts on everyday purchases, such as hunting gear. We want to add value to our members.

Hunting and sporting goods manufactures, hunting guides and outfitters are also encouraged to join and create a free membership as we will provide a laser sharp marketing or distribution channel to will almost eliminate traditional advertising means.

With Let’s Get Hunting Social Network members will be able to share hunting photos, hunting videos, hunting recipes, reviews, hunting guides, forums, and online classifieds and most importantly, meet new hunting friends.

It has been a hit or miss season but I have been hearing of some nice catches when you do get into them. Ice ranges from 4 to 8 inches out there. You need to figure out what they want and go from there.

Also need to use caution goin out further the shipping channel was wide open after the warm weather we had. I have been fishing Fishermans landing for the last few trips out did ok on pike on Monday and it was slow for me on Wednesday saw a lot of flags and fish caught by other people, ice was 3 to 6 inches. Cant get out to deeper water yet the east side of the lake was open water last week.

They have been fishing Snug since first ice and haven’t heard to much about it except for gills. They have been fishing Hartshorn for pike and doing ok some days. Sand Docks is not safe nobody is fishing it. I went to 2nd street yesterday and got out but it wasn’t safe once you walked off the path others have made, ice was 1 to 4 inches. Ice is just starting to get better on the rest of the lake so we will be able to get out and try different spots soon enough."

By Brian McVicar

The Muskegon Chronicle

January 23, 2010, 8:26AM

MUSKEGON — A 435-foot tug-and-barge combination that is scheduled to cut across Muskegon Lake Saturday evening doesn’t pose any immediate risk to the dozens of people who are expected to be on the lake for an ice-fishing competition, according to the competition’s organizers.

“It’s just common sense for anybody that’s on the ice to be aware that it’s coming in and to move when it comes in,” said Mike Schalk, who helped organize the 26th annual White Lake Perch Festival, which includes an ice fishing contest. “If you start hearing the ice crack, you know what you’d better do.”

A tugboat, Karen Andrie, and its companion, the barge Endeavour, will cut across Muskegon Lake at 6 p.m. Saturday on its way from the Muskegon Channel to the Mart Dock. Officials of the shipping company, Andrie Inc., have notified the Coast Guard and local bait shops of their pending arrival.

Schalk says most of the contestants will have wrapped up their day by 4 p.m., when they turn their fish over to the judges. Contestants, expected to number in the hundreds, will compete on lakes throughout Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana and Mason counties during the two-day event.

He also doesn’t expect the weekend’s weather — temperatures are expected to climb into the 40s, and rain is likely Sunday — to put anglers at risk.

“It takes a lengthy time of warm weather, rain and wind to start getting the ice down,” said Schalk, secretary and treasurer for the White River Steelheaders. “But we tell everybody: Use extreme caution.”

Muskegon Fishing Report (12/18/2009)

Muskegon Inland lakes in the area were starting to freeze however there was no safe ice to report. Anglers will want to avoid the large deep lakes or any water that is spring fed. Any snow cover will act as insulation and slow the freezing process. Anglers need to use extreme caution when venturing out on the first ice of the season. Fish shallow waters only.

White Lake- is reporting a good 3-6" of ice and good numbers of pike are being caught with some perch to boot.

Muskegon Lake - Boat fishing is pretty much done however shore anglers were still taking a few walleye. Most are waiting for better ice or a warm-up, whichever comes first.

Muskegon River - Anglers are still finding some steelhead below Bridgeton and in the lower river near the mouth. Try spawn or Hot-n-Tots.

Muskegon Conservation Club- was reported at only having 2 " of ice.

Please post you Muskegon Fishing Reports here.
