My favourite Muslim Names ('aid' to help you find the 'perfect' Muslim name).

Selam. Now I know everybody is going to have their own different opinions on what names they favor or like but I still decided to list my favourite Muslim names and hopefully you too will like the ones I chosed and maybe it will help you to find the "perfect" name you were looking for to name yourself (if you converted to Islam) or if you wanted to change your name since you didn't really like it because it has a bad/improper meaning, etc. Or maybe you can use these names that I'm going to mention to name your baby. Anyway here are my 3 favourite Muslim names that I like it might be kind of hard for me to decide but I'll still try to list them. O.k so here are my favourite Muslim names in point form:

- Aamanee: which means 'good wish'

- Lamiah: Shine

- Maira: Moon

...And the boy names that I like are:

- Hamood: One who praises Allah

- Khaleed: Abiding

- Zaman: Time, destiny

So those were my favourite Muslim names and I'm sorry if I made this post too boring to read.. once again :). Now I think my other most favourite name from the hundreds, nay thousands of names there are would be 'Zaman' although I have had different names that I started to have an interest in. And finally for the girls, not mentioned in the 'list', the name I really like would be Malmal and/or Nazneen. Anyway I think this post might be a little pointless and it's probably getting even more boring now to read, so I'm going to end this right here but I hope I was able to help you even for the slightest, for finding the name you want if you were having trouble finding a name in the first place. Muslim baby names survey 2

Essalamualaykum. Welcome to the 2nd survey of favourite Muslim (baby) names. In this one I have added more names from the first quiz. There about 15 names in total for each boy and girl. This way with more names there should a more chance of people finding the name they actually like but if the amount of names that I have chosen is still not enough and if you do not find a name you really like from the list, not even for the slightest, then you may skip and not do the survey or you can just simply pick the last option in the muslim names poll which states 'sorry, I do not like the names you mentioned in the survey poll'. Now if you choose to do this little quiz, imagine that you are picking a name for your baby or something and from that see which name you would like to choose from the following list. Some of the factors that might arise when a person wants to change their name into a Muslim name after converting to Islam

When someone converts or is converting to Islam, there might be some difficulties in choosing a different name from their own, to a "Muslim name". This might not apply for all and might be already obvious that these 'problems' can maybe occur when wanting to change a name but anyway I will still list them of what I think can be a challenge for some, etc.

1) Generation - If someone was named, lets say after their grandfather, then that could make the parents not be pleased for their child to change their name, since it may hold some importance to it and to them (the parents), and also since it was passed down from a generation or maybe it could be more than a one generation which could make it seem more important and perhaps definitely not a good idea to change it, since it was passed down from a 'huge' line of granddads and/or grandmamas. So if it is a tradition even to be named after one's generation, then that might make the parent be even less happier to see their own baby change their name to a Muslim name after they have converted to Islam. And finally it could be a culture reason to not wanting one's baby to change their name.

2) When a person has converted to Islam or is converting they might want to keep their original birth name, since they were called by that very name for their whole life. They might want to keep it because not only it created an 'image' for them, from their family, relatives, friends, etc but it is also obviously got programmed in their head to react and respond quickly after being called by their own name. This might take some time for one to get used to it and for the others to remember to call that person with their new name and not their old one. Also if they have it written down like virtually or written down on a certificate or something like maybe from school or something or whatever else, then that might take some time to change the name on those documents, etc. So this might kind of feel like moving or something; it just going to take 'some' time to settle down or to get to used to it.

Allright so there you go and hopefully the things that I mentioned weren't too obvious but it probably was, so in that case forget what I just said :). Now before I end this I just want to say that it's not mandatory for one to change their name when converting to Islam. They may keep it if the name has a meaning and if it's a good proper one. Also if that was the reason why one received that name then it may be kept. But if it contains a bad/improper meaning then it be must changed. Can names determine of what a muslim child's personality will form into?

When choosing a name for your Muslim baby, one must choose a name that contains a good meaning and not a bad/improper one. Also picking a name, that is of goodness, can make the child act upon his name or at least be inspired but a name does not obviously determine what the child's personality and traits are going to be like but just like it was said a second ago, the name that they will receive from their parents can inspire them, especially when he or she grows old enough to understand its meaning and its indication that it gives off. A good and pleasant name can motivate the person to do good acts and inspire his/her strength and honour, since he or she is being repeatedly called by it. For ex: if the child's name is 'Abdullah' which means servant of Allah then that can make him be aware of his servitude to Allah and perhaps strive to do good like especially when he grows older and be consious of the meaning to his name and its indication or it can make him realize his true role and the meaning or purpose in life. The same thing goes with a name that contains a bad meaning. Choosing a name of those kind can make the person do evil things. Even if this might not happen a name with a bad, improper meaning must not be used as a name,etc.

Now another thing to keep in mind is how of a good name one should actually choose, for example: any name, which is added to the word 'Deen' or 'Islam' (i.e., once again, names which appear in idaafah genitive construction with these words) such as Noor al-Deen meaning 'light of the religion', Sayf al-Islam (Sword of Islam), Imaam ad-Deen (Imaam of the Religion), etc. because of the great status that are attached to these two words and also because such names like these give a person more than what he or she deserves. Therefore because of this some scholars had ruled it Haram, while the majority of them say it is Makrooh.

This practice of using the words 'Deen' and 'Islam' along with one's name has been started with giving such titles to men that are learned (learned men). Later people had started using them as first names.

Shaikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) was known as 'Taqiy al-Deen' which means (piety of the religion), he disliked it and he would say: "But my family gave me this nickname and it became well-known." Similarly, Imaam an-Nawawi (rahimahullah) disliked his nickname 'Muhiy al-Deen' (reviver of the religion).

So those were some brief explanation of this question post. Now I think in the the last 3 paragraphs I might of went off-topic there and I'm sorry if I kind of did that or so. Anyway once again Essalamualaykum and take care.

Advantages to changing your name into a Muslim name when you convert to Islam

Before I start I just want to say that you don't have to change your name when you become a Muslim but you must change it if it contains a bad, improper meaning or if it does contain a meaning to it at all. Anyway here are the advantages, that of course can be 'somewhat' debatable, of changing a name when converting to Islam:

1) It shows one the condition of repentance; that they have converted to Islam and can start taking part in the faith. This way choosing a Muslim name like one of the names of the prophet can perhaps make them be more influencable and determined to do good in their faith, especially if one chooses a name of a very well-know prophet like Adam (A.S) for instance or Yusuf (A.S); known as "Joseph" in biblical terms.

2) When changing a name, there wouldn't be the confusion if that person with the 'western-society' name like 'Jennifer' for example, is a Muslim or not. This might not be a real problem and probably should not be something to worry about but it still doesn't obviously change the fact that 'some' people will assume that for obvious reasons but once again if the name one has is of good meaning, then it can remain untouched.

So that was some advantages of changing a name when converting to Islam. This might already be pretty obvious to 'some' people but hopefully at least to some it was new info. Recommended Muslim names (Mustahabb)

The names (qualities) that indicates servitude to Allah (S.W.T) and names that musn't be used.

A muslim name that has the first word "Abd" meaning "slave" followed by any Name of Allah (the 99 names/traits/attributes of Allah) can be used. This indicates servitude to Allah, one or more example of name that can be used is Abd al-Ilaah which means 'slave of the One True Lord', Abd al-'Alim 'servant of The Knower of All', Abd Al-Bari' 'slave of The Maker of Order, Abd Al-Fattah, Abd al-Malik, etc. However, probably the best names are 'Abd-Allah' (the slave of Allah) and 'Abd al-Rahmaan' (the slave of the Rahmaan) as it was reported that the Prophet (S.A.W) has said: "The most beloved of names to Allah is an 'Abd' in front of it (Abd-Allah) and 'Abd al-Rahmaan." (Saheeh Muslim '1398')

Now it is forbidden to use a name which is not known to be from the Perfect Names/Attributes of Allah , like for eg: Abd al-Mawjood meaning 'the slave of the Present One', Abd al-Sattar, etc. This is so because Allah's Names cannot be confirmed without the authentic text from the Qur'an or the Sunnah. By doing this, we would end up giving Names to Allah, which are not affirmed for Him. Another thing is that it is Makrooh to use any word with the name of Allah except 'Abd', like 'Rahmat Allah' meaning the Blessings of Allah.

When should one name their muslim child (baby)?

Allah's Messenger (S.A.W) said that: "Every child is held in pledge for his Aqeeqah which is sacrificed for him on his seventh day, and he is named on it and his head is shaved." ('Saheeh' by Shaikh al-Albanee '1165' Abu Dawood 'vol: 2, no: 2831' and as well others)

Another narration in this aspect is related by Anas (R.A), who said: 'Allah's Messenger (S.A.W) said: "A boy was born to me this night and I have given him the name of my forefather Ibrahim." [Saheeh Muslim (4/ 5733)]

So what these Ahaadeeth is saying, that the child can receive a name on the first day of his birth or it can be put-off until the seventh day reaches. However, what is recommended is to give the name to the child on the seventh day, as such is related in the saying of Allah's Messenger r. Now regarding the Hadeeth which has mentioned that the Prophet's practice is taken as an evidence to prove that the child can be allowed to be named before the seventh day.

Do converts have to change their name when they are converting to Islam; becoming a muslim?

Essalamualaykum brother and sisters. The answer to this question is no. Newly converted muslims or to be converting muslims are allowed to keep their original name only if it contains good proper meaning. But if you're looking for 'Why do converts change their name?' then check out this topic on my site if you want, it'll basically list the advantages of changing one's own name when converting to Islam. Anyway as I was saying if the name is not a bad and/or wrong one and if it's not a name without a meaning then it can remain changless :). It is reported in a hadith that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "You will be called on the Day of Resurrection by your names and the names of your fathers, so have good names." (Reported by Abu Dawud)

One example of name that contains bad, improper meaning is "Aasiyah" which means "disobedient" or "rude". This name was carried by Umar's daughter. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) found about this he had changed her name to "Jamilah" which means "the Beautiful" (see Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith no. 4301). Here are some more names on my site, with improper meanings if you're interested: things to keep in mind before choosing a name . This will mostly show the names that musn't be used since of it containing bad meanings, etc.

Now one can only change one's own name, but a person cannot change the family name or name of one's parents, except if they are alive and allow it to take place. The new Muslims that converted to Islam should change their first names, if it contains wrong or bad/improper meanings. Now as far as their last names are concerned they should not be changed, because it is also forbidden in Islam to take the name of someone that is other than one's own biological father.

Allah says in the Qur’an,

"Proclaim their real parentage. That will be more equitable in the sight of Allah. And if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in the faith…" (Al-Ahzab 33: 5)

Giving your child a Muslim name

There are thousands upon thousand of names that could possibly make it difficult for you in helping you to find the right name for your child. Some things you can do to avoid or solve this problem is by trying to choose a name that has an interesting description to you like maybe the name "Zaman" which means "time, destiny" (a boy's name) or perhaps "Aamanee" meaning "good wish" (a girl's name). Another way you can try solving this problem is by finding one description that relates to your personality or something.

Now another thing I wanted to say is that and this might already be pretty obvious to 'most' people out there but uhh the most common and popular name is 'Muhammad'. I have heard that it is popular in the U.K which has overtaken 'George'.

Allright before I end this post I just want to say that, well first I'm real sorry if I did not make this post as interesting enough and if i did not stick with just one topic and if did this post all wrong. But anyway yeah what I wanted to say is that uhh, you can give your baby a name that is outside of the Arabic language. Well according to IslamOnline that is what it said. They also mention the names that are forbidden to choose, since it contains bad meanings. Give their site a look if you want cause I thought it was a very useful read. -Probably the best name a Muslim baby could have is ‘Abdullah’ and/or ‘Abdurrahman’.

- The most unsuitable, odd or a bad name for Muslim baby is ‘Harb’ and ‘Murrah’.

-It is forbidden to use not good (bad) names or names that contains improper meanings.

-It is forbidden to use ‘Barrah’ as your Muslim baby name.

- Avoid names that indicate any trace of shirk or association of partners with Allah like `Abd al-Ka`bah, or `Abd al-Nabi (servant of the Ka`bah or servant of the Prophet), since all of us are servants of Allah alone.
