He began his study of the arabic language at an early age and has been working to translate works of classical and contemporary Arabic poets. He has published an abridged translation of the Diwan (collection) of Imam AlShafi’ee and maintains the website IamAmmar.com, a site that carries his translations as well as orginal works.

It's that time of the year a lot of you have been waiting for. It's the time the planning for the much awaited for "BATTLE OF THE MSAs"begins. If you didn't attend last year, then you missed out. But inshAllah you can make it this year! In a nutshell, it's a battle of wills, knowledge and speed. Teams from different MSA's around New England compete in their knowledge of Islam. As is our tradition, we will be providing a study guide that includes a list of recommended material for each team to study from. If you attended last year, you know you've got some serious studying to do!! And the competing teams should take it seriously! Think of it as a great way to increase your knowledge in Islam and have some fun doing it.

So for those interested in helping out with the planning, execution, marketing and anything else Battle-related, we are having a planning meeting next Friday July 8th at 6:30pm inshAllah at the Berlin Masjid. We would ask that if you are volunteering or wanting to help out that you attend the meeting since we will begin delegating assignments and tasks. If we've already contacted you about helping out, then you also need to show up for this. If you can't make it, just shoot us an email and tell us you're interested in helping out and we'll see if we can fit you in.

We also have other exciting upcoming volunteer opportunities this summer and we will be discussing those in more detail during the meeting.

This summer UConn MSA along with the ICUC have put together a program for all the guys to learn about their religion. Including lessons in:

Tajweed
Aqeedah
Fiqh
Seerah
and even Arabic grammar.

This will be an experience you wont want to miss. There will be telecasts with shuyookh from Umm Al Quraa University in Mecca who will be teaching some lessons. There will also be time for playing basketball, soccer, and other activities. The last thing you need to know is that this is all provided free of costs. This program is only available to brothers and there is limited space so sign up NOW!!

A recent Hartford Seminary visit to the Sultanate of Oman gave Prof. Yahya Michot the opportunity to discover two beautiful cities of Arabia: Muscat, the present capital of the Sultanate, with its Portuguese fortresses, and Nizwa, the ancient chief city of the Ibâdî imamate, with its amazing Islamic architecture. This trip was also the occasion to renew old, almost forgotten ties. The host for the trip, the al-Amana Centre, continues the work of the American Mission founded in Oman in 1891 by the Rev. Samuel Zwemer, the same Samuel Zwemer who, twenty years later, would create The Muslim World journal now edited by Hartford Seminary. Zwemer was its first editor (1911-1948).

Michot will talk about his visit to Oman, and illustrate it with slides.

Yahya Michot is Professor of Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford Seminary. He is editor of The Muslim World journal and director of the Seminary's International Ph.D. program. Before joining Hartford Seminary in September 2008, Dr. Michot was Islamic Centre Lecturer in the Faculty of Theology at Oxford University in Great Britain and a fellow of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.
