Ebola, like all viruses, isn’t airborne. It’s spread via body fluids. Thus, a simple scarf and glasses will protect your face from infection. If you’re in a particularly dangerous environment, you can always hide a SARS mask under a scarf.

According to Time Magazine:

“If the epidemic intensifies, we should prepare for the possibility of an influx of Ebola refugees who, upon gaining entry, could become ill in any locale, putting many more at risk,” the New York Times reported on 9/11/2014. “Thus we need to re-think the Ebola defense zone to go beyond hard hit West Africa to include the world’s transport links and major destinations in the American homeland.”

“It’s spiraling out of control. It is getting worse. It’s spreading faster and exponentially,” Barack Obama said, according to the Associated Press. “If the outbreak is not stopped now, we could be looking at hundreds of thousands of people affected, with profound economic, political and security implications for all of us…”

Meanwhile, Michael T. Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told the NY Times, “The current Ebola virus’s hyper-evolution is unprecedented; there has been more human-to-human transmission in the past four months than most likely occurred in the last 500 to 1,000 years.”

There’s no denying that NOW is the time to get prepared for a global disaster.

Know How To Avoid Exposing Yourself To The Ebola Virus

Ebola virus is spread by contact with an infected person (or animal). In other countries, Ebola is sometimes spread by eating meat of an animal that was infected. In the U.S., the biggest danger will likely be contact with infected people (or animals who came in contact with the infected person, like pets, rodents, etc.). If indeed it spreads, the key will be to avoid contact with other humans until the outbreak has been COMPLETELY contained.

The CDC issued a checklist for hospitals to be ready for Ebola, read it here (PDF).

Prepare your home for an extended stay

If the Ebola virus spreads to anywhere near your area, you may have to keep your family home and not go out in public for as long as one whole month. (The symptoms of Ebola appear between 2-21 days after initial exposure, so 21-30 days is the minimum to quarantine yourself and loved ones to wait out an epidemic.) Therefore, the first thing you need to do is gather enough supplies to make it through 30 days without leaving home.

Minimum Supplies To Survive 30 Days:

Water – 1 gallon per person per day

Food – Breakfast and dinner plus snacks for 30 days (Mut8 will be posting reviews about what’s good, what’s great and what’s awful in the near future so stay tuned!)

Medications – ESPECIALLY PRESCRIPTION MEDS!

Toilet Paper

Soap, Antibacterial products, Disinfectants

Radio – preferably one that receives weather and emergency broadcasts, preferably crank-powered

Most of our electrical grid & water sources are automated these days, so we *should* continue to have electricity & water during this time, but it’s a good idea to prepare for blackouts. To play it safe, you should also stock up on:

Food that doesn’t require cooking

Extra water for bathing & washing dishes

Candles

LED Flashlights

Camp stove with extra fuel

Survive In Style With These Extras!

But this is bare survival, what we promised you is Surviving In Style! To make the experience more comfortable, you’ll also want to stock up on these items (pick the ones appropriate for your situation):

Your favorite face wipes for bathing in-between proper baths

Wine, Beer, Whiskey/Rum/Vodka

Movies to watch that don’t require internet access (if Netflix’s server goes down midway through the month, it’s unlikely anyone is going to risk death to go fix it…)

Minimum exercise equipment that will help adapt your usual routine into something you can do at home

Firewood if you have a fireplace

Books you’ve been wanting to read when you have the time

Magazines, scissors & glue if anyone in your family enjoys making collages

Board games

Music that doesn’t require an internet connection (this combined with the wine/beer/liquor makes for a fantastic dance party)

Battery operated Xmas lights (makes power outages and dance parties more fun)

Any skill you’ve been hoping to learn that you can learn from a book, this is a GREAT time to do it. You’ll come out of this experience safe AND more talented.

– An Origami book and paper (great time to learn)
– A book of knots and a few feet of rope
– If you have kids, stash a How-To book for hand shadow puppets – this keeps them occupied for quite awhile and you can introduce a new animal/etc. each night
– A ready-to-grow garden in a box – you can watch the plants come to life by then end of the quarantine!

Protective Gear

In the event that you MUST leave your house (say to help a neighbor or some other emergency) it’d also be a good idea to have some protective gear:

Particle masks, goggles, face shields - Ebola, like other viruses, aren’t airborne, but a particle mask will keep body fluids from splashing on your mouth or eyes

Disposable gloves

Disposable CPR mouth guard

There is a range of different masks to choose from – dust masks aka SARS masks, emergency masks, cool carbon filter masks, or my personal fave (maybe because it reminds me of The Division video game

If you do leave home for any reason, make sure you dispose of everything you’re wearing before entering your home. It’s important to keep contaminated items in the contaminated area and out of quarantine areas. Depending on the situation, you may want to stash a clean set of clothes somewhere between the contaminated area and non-contaminated area so you can dispose of the clothing you wore in the contaminated area (plus any protective equipment you used – gloves, masks, etc.) and then dispose of the fresh clothes in your own garbage can outside your home. This will reduce the amount of contamination you bring close to home.
Nothing you brought with you is expensive, so there’s no reason to reuse it and risk infection.

According to a USA Today article from this time last year, the longest postseason game ever played was a long 18 innings between the Braves and Astros in 2005. Today the Giants-Nationals game shares that title for most innings in a postseason game.

This also makes it a sweep for the Giants after beating the Nationals by only 1 run in last night’s game, also played in Nationals Park. The Giants come home now for Game 3 on Monday in AT&T Park in San Francisco.

As the Giants would say, we’re playing for 3 rings in 4 years!!

Deadpool Movie

Turns out that Deadpool footage we watched a while back wasn’t a complete hoax after all:

The Merc with a Mouth will be directed by Tim Miller and most likely star Deadpool’s biggest fanboy, Ryan Reynolds.
One can only hope the movie is as FANTASTIC as the video game!!!

Assassin’s Creed Movie

Meanwhile, Assassin’s Creed is getting bumped to 2016 because the film won’t be ready by August of next year, as originally hoped. Which is painful, but Deadpool seems like a decent consolation prize.

Chances are, the AC movie, which will star Michael Fassbender (X-Men’s young Magneto) will be better than previous vids if not equally entertaining…

According to the report, the financial literacy of teens in the U.S. is directly correlated to our nation’s proficiency in mathematics and reading. This correlation was not consistent across all 18 countries surveyed, however. Unsurprisingly, students with at least one parent in a finance-related profession scored the highest in the U.S. while students with at least one parent in a semi-skilled or unskilled profession scored the lowest.

17.8% of American students are reportedly below the baseline level of financial proficiency which is described as understanding the difference between needs and wants. OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría further explained, “They cannot for instance understand the benefit of drawing up a simple budget.” By comparison, Shanghai-China has fewer than 2% in this bottom level of proficiency.

9.4% of American teens qualified as top performers, just under the global average of 9.7%. Top performers were described by Gurría as, “understanding the implications of income tax brackets for take-home salaries or the impact of inflation on savings.” Meanwhile, 40% of China’s students scored as top performers.

While China may have the top scores in the global report, it’s Netherlands who was commended for having the best initiatives currently in action to combat this widespread illiteracy. The next global survey in 2015 will demonstrate how effective Netherlands’ efforts prove to be.

The results for the U.S. (PDF) as well as the entire report, “First OECD PISA financial literacy test finds many young people confused by money matters” can be explored on the OECD website.

Polfeldt says that he began by asking the other studios “What are you really passionate about? And, be blunt, where do you think you’re better than us? Because that’s what we want you to do on this project. What would you like to own?”

Not surprising, Massive learned this management style from Ubisoft when the tables were turned:

“[At] Ubisoft, we come in and say, ‘We really, really need to do this. Because we think we can excel on this generation of consoles.'” Management’s response? “Okay. It seems important to you. You seem to have a very clear idea what to do. Okay, fine. Put a bit of time, put a bit of people on that, and let’s see.”

As a friend of mine used to say, never interfere with people who want to work, who have energy to spend and an idea to follow. Especially if it doesn’t interfere with what you’re trying to do.

“How can companies increase engagement? An insightful New York Times article by Tony Schwartz and Christine Porath included a survey of more than 12,000 employees that identified four drivers: physical (having the opportunity to recharge); emotional (feeling valued); mental (having the ability to work autonomously); and spiritual (feeling connected to a higher purpose).”

And that’s basically it, yeah. Employees NEED to recharge between work and more work. Successful employees need to feel valued, that their work is meaningful. And that’s where a higher purpose comes in – feeling that your work makes the world a better place, whether that be social good, technological improvement, betterment of the human species, promotion of higher art forms, or simply evolution of the 1st person shooter genre.

Now, some employees will prefer autonomy, while others actually hate it. I know, no one you know would refuse the opportunity to work without supervision. But I know some employees who feel that their work isn’t valued if their manager doesn’t keep tabs on what they’re doing all day every day. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Good management recognizes the personality types each of their team members displays and manages accordingly….
