I'm not going to lie, I've been putting this one off. Its also taken me bloody ages from writing the title to clicking 'Publish Post'.

I could go off on a rant about how the question is stupid and demeaning and what the hell does 'favourite' really mean anyway because it can be so relative and in what context is it held and how the hell can I just pick ONE and and and yeah. Even though I feel like I'm missing so many - while some of my favorite bands greats like Nirvana, The Rolling Stones and The Clash aren't even featured - I decided to go for a selection of songs which personally affected/still affect me the most, not just those based on the respect and recognition they rightly deserve.

The Pixies - Doolittle

Three years ago I was in a little independant record shop and I heard a weird-but-kind-of-absolutely-amazing-song playing in the store and I proceeded to ask the owner who the band was. £5 and a thousand consecutive plays later I had fallen in love with music and it changed my life. So no, I won't pick just one song from this album.

So my music taste has definitely evolved drastically over the past 3 years but this is just fantastic simple noughties (eurgh don't you just hate that word) british indie at its best. It brings so much nostalgia to my summers of 2009/2010 and I still feel like even today its lyrics apply to me so well.

The Dodos - Undeclared

This makes me feel warm and fluffy but incredibly sad and lonely at the same time. Its remarkable how two instruments, two voices and a few notes evoke such depth and emotion. It reminds me why I love music. A gorgeous little thing this is.

I Blame Coco - Kato

Exactly the same goes for this gem as well. Her voice is beautiful, you can tell she's Sting's daughter. For some reason I seem to love music that initially may be heard as sweet or upbeat but which infact has an darker element of sadness to them.

Interpol - Untitled

There's just something about this that I can't quite put into words. Plug in some good bass speakers and turn this up loud.

The XX - xx

This is possibly my second favourite album of all time after Doolittle and again I can't pick just one song. The whole thing is a bit of a modern masterpice. I've never heard anything quite like it. I randomly stumbled onto this video about half a year before they hit the masses and I was instantly hypnotized.

I don't believe this one needs any actual explanation why its one of my favourites.
It is just pure and unadulterated genius/sex/badass. And him. Those eyes. That voice. Man, that voice. And the keyboardist, fuck he has some talent. Look at them all staring at you at the end, like they know. How could you not fall in love with this.

Fuck it, I take everything back I said before. This is my favourite song of all time.

You know you should probably post long overdue pictures when your dear 'friends' actually start hacking into your blog and leave delightful threatening messages for you to find... ahem.

This was literally taken around 5 minutes after I arrived. I pride myself in my ability to make any room look like a shit tip in a matter of seconds. Its a fine skill that is.

Isn't it funny how we seem to be obsessed over taking pictures of ourselves. Its not as if we don't know what we look like. Its especially the ones where we suddenly jump into a pose and the right angles to flatter ourselves as much as possible for the camera, which irk me the most. Its not like we're exactly capturing a special moment in time by doing so. I wonder what it is. Vanity? A primal instinct to look as good as we can to attract the desired sex when we post them online for all to see? I don't know.

Its the photos which are candid and unexpected which I find so much more appealing. They tend to evoke questions and curiosity, and hold some sort of story behind it.

I mean, guys, you know.

This lovely little ditty makes me happy and not grumpy about the world.

Un (favourite film)

I have been to a grand total of 2 of my English Canon seminars since I have been at uni and I have to wake up in just over 3 hours time if I decide to actually go today. I also have a load of overdue photos to post. So, of course, I am going to launch my 30 day challenge stupid tumblr thing on this fine friday morning.
Duh, what else.

So sue me its a cliché cult classic and I am fully aware that anyone who has any knowledge of pop culture can recite at least 3 quotes from it from the top of their heads. And yes I know that it is by far not the best film out there in terms of cinematic feats.

However this coked up little gem here seeded my utmost prevailing love for film when at the tender age of 11 years I decided it would of course be a good idea to watch this rated 18 mysterious video tape. Roughly two hours later I was left feeling repulsed, shocked, utterly confused. Yet at the same time I was completely in awe. I finally understood that film (lets ignore the infestation of shitty 3D ones for a moment shall we) is a medium of art, expression, politics, true story telling, a fuck you world, everything.

Very few other films leave me feeling in some sense - dare I even say it - numinous but from the top of my head A Thin Red Line and Reservoir Dogs are also pretty fucking good.

I don't think I can quite process just how much film has changed me as a person over the years. The way I think, act, dress, look at the world, appreciation of art, adoration for music and literature, and so much more, have all been influenced by film in some way or another.

Isn't that fucking crazy.

Yet its funny how at the same time it is equally just as much of way of escapism from mundane reality.

This all makes me wonder what I would be like as a person if film or cinema was never created. Would I still be 'myself'? It seems to confirm my belief of Sartre's existentialism claim that man has no nature. Or nurture over nature. Whatever you want it call it.

Even just talking about the concept of what Pulp Fiction represents to me and seeing how it takes my mind into these different ideas and paths and ways of thinking makes me love it all the more.

And I haven't even touched on the actual film itself.

(If by some insane reason you have not watched it, what the hell are you doing. Go. Now. Its bad-motherfucking-ass. Trust me.)

I can remember the days when I would not leave my room without my phone surgically attached to my hand or go a single hour without checking facebook around a dozen times.
However as of late I've been completely detaching myself away from these 'social technologies'. I'm finding such a freedom in being able to walk around in the 'real world' without the constant buzzing in my pocket or the compulsory need of having to check what a random person I met 2 years ago in a some forgotten bar is making dinner for their dog that night.
How funny it is that in modern western society this can been deemed as weird and even anti-social.
Or that its even a thing.
But what is more anti-social than going out and being surrounded by your friends tapping away on their Blackberrys while ignoring the whole point of going out with them in the first place? Imagine that, a world where people talked face to face to each other.
Crazy.

Oh and everything he just said too.

It is also a delightful feeling to know that this idea of our right to 'privacy' in our society is sliding down a very slippery slope and Facebook is certainly more then willing to keep pushing us down it. The CIA etc monitiring us on facebook? Of course not.
People getting arrested over a twitter update? Don't be ridiculous.

This is just plain hilarious.

And yes I know, I'm being a bit of cynic who has nonexistent nostalgic memories of the good ol' days where our lives weren't ruled my technology, and yes I know these social mediums allow us to stay in contact with those who we previously wouldn't wouldn't of had the chance to, and yes I know that it has countless other great attributes... but where is the boundary line?

Its sometimes nice to have a cigarette outside on your own and take pictures of the sky at 6am from your rooftop and get away from the constant buzzing of technology and noise. I forget too often how we should make more effort in having moments of peace and quiet, if only to just clear our heads and remind ourselves how gorgeous the world can be, despite everything.

This church's windows were all bordered up with wire making it look like a looming asylum rather then a place of worship and community. I guess in some cases there isn't much difference between the two.

Ahh yes that wonderful feeling when 23 photos mysteriously go missing and the only vague explanations the ladies at Asda photo development can come up with are 'just hit and miss I guess' and 'erm I think some of them were probably too dark'.

I should be grateful that this is the extent of my problems right now and that I'm not a political prisoner in North Korea or something but come on guys, #firstworldproblems.

I was going to do a post on the mysterious (not really) reason why I don't leave the house anymore/never see the sunlight (last week I reached 2 days without seeing the sun, cue loss of sanity) bar a few trips to friends' houses just to show people that I am indeed still alive HOWEVER my wonderful webcam has of late decided that everything should be yellow in the world. Cheers pet.

Every kind of photo camera I once had has in some way ceased be be competent:

digital camera - broken
blackberry torch - broken (for the fourth time erm)
parents camera - stolen
disposable camera - need to wait a while to use up the whole film and then have it developed
holga - ditto + need to finally buy the goddam thing once money comes through
webcam - on acid

This is a really good start to the blog and to my new years resolution.

Feeling quiffy today.

I'm not hating this colour effect actually. Meh. (I promise there aren't just going to be endless photos of myself displaying my obvious uncontrollable vanity once I get a rollin')

This is that 'oh hey welcome to my blog look at me nonchalantly posing in front of my webcam trying to look as sultry as possible with no effort even though it took me 2 hours to get that perfect picture but oh guyssss stop complementing me I'm sooo ugly and fat' post that is to be expected. (It took me approx 1 hour. Shut up.)

I gave up trying to look socially acceptable. Too much effort and time.

So, a little time has past since that last post. Worryingly so it seems to be still pretty relevant. Except that it is currently the afternoon rather then the oh so familiar early hours of the morning, for once.
Buying a Holga 120 CFN next week, that should be pretty interesting. 'Interesting' as in I-am-now-a-fully-fledged-uni-student-that-barely-lives-above-the-poverty-line-so-taking-up-a-rather-expensive-hobby-is-obviously-a-very-clever-idea.
