A survey of European television viewers has revealed the dominant TV content discovery methods and influences among consumers. Data for the ResearchNow survey, sponsored by UK-based TV Genius, was collected from 3000 viewers across the UK, France, Germany, Poland and Sweden. The results of the study, announced today ahead of IBC, show that although consumers are largely using the electronic programme guide (EPG) when watching television, it has comparatively little influence over the content they choose. The research reveals that traditional media such as newspapers and magazines are more effective in the content discovery process, as well as online sources or on-screen trailers.

A quick reminder: If you're involved with or interested in professional video, the International Broadcasting Conference (IBC) starts this coming Thursday, September 9th, in Amsterdam. As with many conferences of this type, most of the new products are announced either shortly before the conference begins or the first day of the conference, in order to drive traffic to exhibitors' booths. A great way to keep track of new product announcements is a site called Virtual Press Office, or VPO. They distribute press releases and already have almost 100 press kits from exhibitors available for download. (Materials on the site will be updated throughout the show.) You don't need to be a reporter to use VPO, but you do have to register in order to get access to some of the materials.

This IBC2010, why not check out location based apps and how they can improve your experience of the exhibition. Some exhibitors are making use of Foursquare (foursquare.com) to allow you to learn more about their products and to try and entice you into the location aware app world. It also has a great advantage that if enough people get into using foursquare then it will allow you to get new network opportunities and possibly shortcuts to the hottest exhibitors, and expand your knowledge of Amsterdam. Foursquare has apps for all the main smartphone platforms. You can follow me on nocky100 and I am in Amsterdam all over the IBC period.

Aroundme for the iPhone also offers a way of getting info about places in your surroundings, so you can always find a nice restaurant or bar for that post-halls meeting. If you have an iPhone, then try it out from the iTunes store.

Another useful app for the iPhone user is the iamsterdam app or accessing the iamsterdam web site for info about getting around in Amsterdam.

And for those who have difficulty with roaming data, then I can say that away from the Rai you will find a few open/free wifi places (take precautions!) but you can also walk into the many mobile phone stores and acquire yourself a Sim card from one of the many operators who have Pre-paid/Pay As You Go data for the time you are over (Vodafone has a good €9.50 for 500MB for a month and T-Mobile has a €4.50 per day for any amount of data tariff – within an AUP of course), or you can buy a 3G dongle with Sim for an acceptable €60 including some data credit.

See you around in the ‘Dam

Most of us at Boxee are Apple fanboys. If it is silver and it has the Apple logo on it, we pre-order it. If there’s a line around the block, chances are we’re in it. And everything stops at Boxee HQ while we unbox the latest gadget to come out of Cupertino. We were incredibly excited when a couple of developers in the community made it possible to run Boxee on Apple TV (as hundreds of thousands of users have done) and the Boxee Remote for iPhone remains one of the most popular interfaces people use to interact with Boxee. Plenty has happened since then.

Well Apple has given us that one more thing, the new improved Apple TV, However this has caused me to think about one of the less understood aspects of the Apple ecosystem… Fairplay – Apple’s DRM system. Well what caused me to think about this ‘almost’ hidden DRM?

Well what Fairplay gives you is the ability to playback/use protected content on up to 5 devices. It used to be 3 in the past, but Apple increased the limit as they expanded in the number and types of devices/equipment.

I have a fair amount of Apple devices operating all under one account – an iPhone, an iPod Touch, an iPad, two laptops and one PC connected to the TV. You can see I have six devices, and somehow I have managed to avoid the dreaded out of devices message, although I believe this is more because of the fact I do not playback protected content on the two laptops and so I have no idea which one is the authorised device. Sometimes in the next few days I will get that message and then I will be stuck, I will need to deauthorise and re-authorise some of the devices on one account, and add the other to a separate account which cannot playback my protected content, only the stuff that I would buy under the new account.

This is the fun bit, now Apple have released the all new Apple TV which causes me some much deeper pain, as I definitely cannot fit that one in. So something has to change, and I hope that it will be Apple – but that will only come in the form of increasing the number of valid devices or giving us a ‘Family’ iTunes account that allows sharing of content amongst a small number of different iTunes accounts in a Library style. Anything else will raise the ire of the content companies too great, at least that is what I believe since the ‘anything else’ is to remove Fairplay completely.

Until then I think Apple TV is a no-no, and I hope I keep this setup going as long as possible without creating additional accounts. But then my two daughters are getting more digitally aware…argghhhh!

If you want to own Glee episodes at a cut-rate price, better get your Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) downloads fast. The e-tailer is countering Apple’s 99-cent rentals from ABC (NYSE: DIS) and Fox by selling some TV episodes at a loss. Amazon still has to pay the contracted rates for electronic sell-throughs (EST), according to sources familiar with the situation, and the networks still have deals with Amazon, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and other distributors that make a switch to 99-cent EST as the rule highly unlikely anytime soon. One source described the price-slashing as a “big loss” although the actual number depends on how many take advantage—and how long Amazon sticks with the lower rate.

Well September has rolled around again and IBC is coming. All of our mailboxes are full of bumf, invites and some that can only be described as spam for even the hardened IBC visitor. However what will it bring this year? Previous years have been about 3D and IPTV, and of course we cannot forget mobile TV… well maybe I can forget mobile TV

Growth in shipments of various video products in the consumer electronics market, even in a year with economic uncertainty like 2009, helped the MPEG video SoC market reach over 650 million units in 2009, says In-Stat. Digital set top boxes, digital TV sets, and Blu-ray players had large roles in the increase.

When Forrest Gump wrote about the IBC Conference, he likened it to a box of chocolates, it never being entirely clear what you were going to get. We do our best to enlighten you. Fortunately the organizers have done their best to theme the sessions and the result for those of us active in the multichannel television business is that while Thursday and Friday are full, the Saturday and Sunday are free enough to do some stand-hopping, before returning to the conference fray on the Monday.
