Another alert and this time it seems to be a bit more serious following the 8.8 Magnitude quake over in Chile.

Having been listening to the marine scanner this morning a few interesting reports of 1.0m waves and 0.2m waves (20 cm) have been reported all along the coastline.

We headed on up to North Head where dozens of people and a ONE News team were standing by to witness the onslaught. (Photo: Murray Douglas) Of course, nothing really happened. We did see some small waves coming into shore but very noticeable.

No time to be complacent though, we never know when the real one will hit and when it does, I can guarantee 100% that there will be plenty of beach spectators getting hurt.

Today we saw the Cruise ship Dawn Princess anchored at the entrance to the Waitemata harbour having been told to leave its dock due to the Tsunami alert. (Photo by Murray Douglas) Note the passengers on the upper deck waiting for the show to start!

The photo on the right is of the first Tsunami waves (surge) as it 'hit' Auckland at approx 10.52am. Its not much to look at I'm afraid...

The Tsunami alert remains in place for the rest of the day.

I have been messing around with a new video camera for work. A Flip Video Mino HD and over the last week or so I have been filming in and around where I live, which is of course, Auckland New Zealand.

I filmed this over 2 days while Cycling from Devonport in the North Shore of Auckland, over to the city and then along Tamaki drive.

Falklands War 2, Coming right up...

I was extremely surprised to read about this. It seems that some tensions have heightened in the South Pacific between the UK and Argentina over the Falkland Islands.

It has been reported that Royal Navy warships are on stand by to defend commercial vessels heading to the British territory over a dispute with Argentina over oil drilling in the area.

Argentina has declared that any oil drilling would be illegal and good old Scot, Gordon Brown is not taking any crap by stating "We maintain the security of the Falklands and there are routine patrols continuing," Mr Brown said. "I think you will find that we have made all the preparations that are necessary to make sure the Falkland Islanders are properly protected."

I guess this is political talk for, 'don't even try it my Argentinian friends, for you shall regret it'.

Indeed, by own views upon the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands are this. Argentina itself is a a former Colony of Spain, so how do they get to claim the Falklands? Britain and other European powers claimed the Falklands over many years and it ended up in British hands. Simple.

If the claim to the Falklands lies simply upon proximity to Argentina (which it seems to) then surely that means that Mozambique has the right to claim Madagascar as its own, Australia should take over New Zealand and clearly Sri Lanka must be Indian!

Not that I agree with the continued use of oil as a power source, but if this argument swells up again to Argentinian aggression over the Falklands (Islas Malvinas) then I am sure that the UK will come up with a proper, justified and measured response, after all, we have 4 shiny new 5th generation fighter/bombers (Eurofighter Typhoons) on the islands which are probably just itching for some target practice.

After the NZ Herald yesterday that Steve Job's has just unveiled Apple's new creation the iPAD, I decided to watch the unveiling video and see what its all about!

Ok, people who know me are well aware, although I recognise the very good MAC interface, overall I am not a MAC fan.

What I found interesting about the video below, is that the people are clapping before they have any idea what it even does! (Cringe)

Steve Jobs says 'this is what it looks like!' and the audience are like 'Woooooooo!, Clap Clap Clap!'.

Cringe.

It certainly does look like an oversized iPod Touch or iPhone.
Will it do everything my Windows PC does?
Will it be as good as running Firefox?
Will it play all the video formats that the web has to offer?
Will it run all the scripts / Flash etc? I dunno.

Maybe one of you guys can tell me. I am sure there are already many Mac lovers out there who are salivating over their bed pillows at night, as they dream for the moment to arrive where they can spend their hard earned cash on Apple's latest, overpriced, shiny thing.

How to Stop the Scrapers?

According to Wikipedia, 'Blog scraping' is the process of scanning through a large number of blogs, usually daily, searching for and copying content. This process is conducted through automated software.

The software and the individuals who run the software are sometimes referred to as blog scrapers. Scraping is copying a blog that is not owned by the individual initiating the scraping process. If the material is copyrighted it is considered copyright infringement, unless there is a license relaxing the copyright. The scraped content is often used on spam blogs or splogs.

I admit to using sources from other websites as back up content for my own, but I always cite my sources and provide links back to them. The problem is these bastard 'sploggers' such as the person over at wallpapers-e.com who has been constantly stealing my copyrighted photographs from one of my other blogs. What do we do about them?

Submitting a DMCA report to Google seems like our only option. What will Google do in such an event? remove the site from their lists? The offending website will still exist!

So frustrating! This is my 2nd post on this issue and I very, very pissed off to see a site stealing content from people which is getting a higher Google Pagerank and Alexa ranking than the very sites it steals from!

If you have any experiences with this type of issue, I would love to hear from you!

After watching the Skytower fireworks from Auckland's Skytower all I can say is WOW!

as in......wow. is that it?

I hate to be cynical at a time of rebirth but c'mon NZ, what the hell is going on here?

New Zealand is the first major country in the world to see the new year and yet we fail to capitalise on it. Every-Time!

Sydney will go off! Why? because they are the first people to see the new year! Wooooooooo! at least this is what the world thinks. No one knows that poor little NZ is actually 2 hours before them and why? because NZ gives the world absolutely no reason to watch.

But.

NZ is more than happy to use our tax dollars to fund elitist sports which no-one even watches. For godsake NZ take those millions of dollars you gave the the America's cup and give it to Auckland to put on a decent New Years Party with some fireworks which might actually make people say 'wow!' in a good way that is...

Sydney spends up large every year because they know that the world is watching and they bring it a heap of tourists from it!

By the way, the first words I head in 2010 were from an Italian tourist standing right next to me after the Auckland fireworks. he said 'It was very poor'.

I completely understand, the Poor bastard probably wished he had gone to Sydney instead.

'USB Over Current Status Detected' Error Fixed

So, you have been messing around with your PC and suddenly you see 'USB Over Current Status Detected, Shutdown in 15 Seconds!'

Dear God! WTF?

Well if you Google this problem you will find a whole bunch of different solutions but I thought I'd write my own since it was really quite simple.

I have a Asus A8V Deluxe Motherboard and I just upgraded to Windows 7 using a new hard drive. Once I did this I also upgraded my RAM to 4GB.

After a few issues with the Hard Drive and system 'hang ups' I started to investigate in the BIOS for any problems and then after a few unsuccessful goes I discovered the ominous message 'USB Over Current Status Detected, Shutdown in 15 Seconds!'

Shit!

Ok, well I tried a few things to get the system back and I even inserted my old Seagate drive with Vista on it and I could not get past the message. I could not even get into the BIOS.

* I ripped out my latest stick of RAM (Legend. L1264D37 - BU1HDH9B - 1GB DDR400 Hynix HY5DU12822BT - D43) and suddenly everything was fine again. I don't know how or why a dodgy stick of ram would cause a 'USB Over Current Status Detected' Problem but go figure....

I'd love to know what the problem actually was but it only appeared after I inserted an older SATA WD Drive which seemed to set of a chain reaction of problems culminating in the 'USB Over Current Status Detected' problem.

Poor Detective Baylor, I know how annoying it is to be bombarded by snowballs from people you do not know. :-)

Maybe this Police officer thought he was about to deal with an angry mob and pulled out his gun as a precaution.

Fair enough I reckon.

But there is no getting away from the fact that it looks really really bad for the DC police, especially when the mob questioned him on it, he just dug his hole even deeper (something we have all done from time to time) by saying 'yes, I drew my gun, because I was hit by a snowball'.

Maybe it was a silly thing to do and surely he never would have fired it (perhaps?) but in any event, this guy ain't gonna have a very Merry Christmas for sure, and that's just a downright shame.

On the other hand, those 'mature' people who were shouting 'Fuck you Pig!'. I bet they are going to have a great Christmas.

I Hate Tailgaters / Auckland Road Rage

Once again I have experienced that all too prevalent aspect of Kiwi life yet again, Road Rage and tailgaters.

There I was, heading up the Northern Auckland Motorway to Albany at 100 K/ph when the lane I was in start to slow down with big lorries, so I check my mirrors and head into the fast lane while accelerating to approx 110 K/ph, just in case someone comes flying up behind me even faster.

Suddenly a guy in a Toyota Hilux going around maybe 120 K/ph rides right up to my rear bumper.

So what do I do? speed up a little? move back into the slow lane? (filled with lorries). What the f*ck am I supposed to do? I would be happy to let the prick past if it were safe.

I don't know about you, but I absolutely hate tailgaters, I absolutely hate the fact that some foolishly undereducated driver will happily sit on my ass at around 110 - 120 K/ph.

I hit my washers to give him a little soak and surprisingly this made him back off, albeit very briefly. Then of course as I was still looking for a safe gap in the slow lane (I am still speeding anyway) he comes right back up my arse again. So what to do?

I slammed on the brakes.

Dropping to around 80 K/ph I obviously made him very angry and having slowed down to a safer speed I then made my way over to the slow lane to let him past. Of course his reaction was typical predictable, 'you wanker' etc etc.

So whats the point of tailgating again? if you want to speed then surely you might realise that the people in front might, just might not want to speed. If you tailgate and then hit me, its your fault! is this concept not understood by these people?

If anyone should be angry, it is the people who are being tailgated, not the tailgater. I would absolutely love it if this guy would drive himself off the road and kill himself in a firey heap, I would be de-fucking-lighted!

But you want to drive up my arse and take me with you? This makes me angry, very angry.

Who put that shirt on your back? And who is going to help you if you get sick?... ...That's right, the National Socialist Government of Great Britain! Now get back to work before I whip you!"

This, I think, is a fair image of what some of our American cousins must have in mind, as the debate over US health-care gets more and more heated.

Now, what the hell does this have to do with me? I am not American, so therefore it is none of my business right? Well, apart from the fact that I don't like to see anyone dying and going bankrupt as a result of the lack of proper health care, my main reason for rushing into this discussion are the vitriolic, relentless and often downright vicious attacks on a certain British organisation. (UK NHS is 'Evil and Orwellian') The National Health Service.

I, myself, am a Scot, and as many people know, there can be a great deal of division in the UK between Scots, English, Welsh and Irish on a variety of political, social and even religious matters. Despite these national divisions, I believe I can say with great certainty that there is one thing we all agree on without reservation: the value and sanctity of the NHS.

The NHS is one of those things that makes many people proud to be British. Indeed the NHS is held up as a symbol of all that is great with Great Britain.

Why? Well put simply, while we do have a class divide in the UK (we have 'posh bastards' and 'poor bastards' alike, many nations do), there is a moment when that line can and does blur. It happens in the Accident and Emergency room of an NHS hospital; it happens the moment you dial 999 for emergency treatment.

If you are poor or if you are rich, an ambulance will arrive and speed you off to the nearest NHS hospital with equal alacrity. Once you get there, you will be treated with equal efficiency and once you are fixed up, you will be sent home with equal compassion and after care.

At no time during this process are you ever required to have some kind of 'pre-approval' from a 3rd party (Insurance Company)
At no time during this process are you ever asked to waste valuable time filling out forms to prove you have adequate insurance cover.
At no time are you ever to fear that your insurance company might not meet the medical bills because they have discovered that you got beaten up by your husband.
At no time will you have to worry that 'someone, somewhere' has actively began an investigation into finding a reason to deny your care, because they will get a bonus if they find one.

You will never be billed and you will never be left behind.

Emergency treatment is the top priority of the NHS as it surely should be in any civilised country, but for an ill patient to worry about money, coverage, co-payments, deductibles, approvals and claims to a 3rd party private company is surely not just an annoying inconvenience, but downright unethical and immoral. Even after all that stress, what if your HMO wont pay? See '1 in 5 healthcare claims rejected in California'.

The stats on Denials (Image to the right) lead me to firmly believe that there is no place for private 3rd party profiteering when it comes to my healthcare. This includes a government run company such as Medicare trying to compete on such a corrupt playing field.

A recent attack on the British NHS and, by extension, all socialised systems came from the Investors Business Daily, who denounced the UK NHS by saying:

"People such as scientist Stephen Hawking wouldn't have a chance in the U.K. where the National Health Service would say the quality of life of this brilliant man, because of his physical handicaps, is essentially worthless."

The IBD did of course issue a 'correction' after they were told that Professor Stephen Hawking is in fact British and received treatment by the NHS. However in this correction they go on to say:

"We also say that not everyone suffering from a debilitating disease is Stephen Hawking, and we hope our critics would acknowledge that. Hawking is a renowned theoretical physicist, university professor and best-selling author. It is doubtful any National Health Service bureaucrat would cut him off." Hawking personally replied that, "I wouldn't be here today if it were not for the NHS," he said. "I have received a large amount of high-quality treatment without which I would not have survived."

The comment section below IBD's 'correction' shows that many people are not entirely happy with IBD's interpretation of the subject. One commentator writes:

"The columnist's blunder is even worse than the critics have noted. My brother died in January after about 15 years of living with ALS. His death occurred after his health insurance (top of the line) was exhausted. My efforts to get the insurance carrier to extend coverage three more months to permit him to be around for the birth of his first grandchild, after which he was to be removed from his ventilator, were denied. This is the American system."

Certainly no health system is 'perfect'. But as a citizen of this small planet, I believe that the NHS is one of the most moral and ethical systems; under it, turning patients into money making machines, would be unthinkable. The fact that the NHS does not have to compete for profit with others helps to make it the 'service-first' organisation that it is.

The NHS could of course be better, faster and more efficient. However the view that a private company is never wasteful and inefficient is insupportable. The only difference between the two, is that the private sector will simply hide their mistakes and wastefulness inside your bill and invoice, whereas a public option can't.

The UK NHS may be a rather 'socialist' system but make no mistake, the UK economy is built on money. The UK remains the worlds 5th largest economy and the UK economic system is capitalist through and through; it depends on capitalist market forces to drive growth. The key difference between this Briton's point of view and that of many Americans seems to be that, in my opinion making profit is fine, until it interferes with essential services for the public good.

From the second I was put into the helicopter to the moment I left the hospital weeks later, I must have consumed millions of pounds. if you think about all the little costs all lumped into one. Drugs, care, food etc. Do you know what it cost me? nothing at all... If you guys are worried about how much its gunna cost, I recommend you stop spending so much on new ways to nuke shit and start spending it on the people in your country who really need it.'

Iranian commanders assassinated : Terrorism?

The word 'Terrorism' is used far too loosely these days in my opinion.

The attack on the USS Cole in October 2000 was often called terrorism even though it was a military target which was attacked (via suicide) by an aggrieved aggressor. The latest (Oct 2009) attack on the Islamic Revolutionary Guards is surely also a 'military target'.

I'm not saying its right, but why can we draw a clear line between what is Terrorism and what is not. I always thought that terrorism was when innocent (civilian) non-combatants are deliberately targeted for death and destruction. These Islamic Revolutionary Commanders are not civilians, they are military personnel and military personnel from ANY nation should always consider themselves as a 'fair' target by whatever enemy you have. Who that enemy is? I don't know.

I just wish this blanket labelling of 'Terrorist' and 'Terrorism' would stop.

Sploggers, Scraping and Stealing your content!

If you have arrived here because the title of this post matches your search engine query then you are probably having the same issue as me.

I discovered a website called www.wallpapers-e.com
(I wont link to them since it will probably help them) which has been extensively scraping, stealing and copying content from my own website www.widescreenstuff.com* probably via RSS.

Wallpapers-e makes good use of AdSense on their site and is profiting from other websites which spend many hours creating valuable content. Some of the wallpapers that thiste site has stoen for me, ranks Higher in Google than my own!

I have emailed the contact of the website after doing a Whois search and he assures me that he receives emails all the time about this and he sold the website ages ago. I have emailed the new contact but no success so far.

How to stop a scraper from stealing your content.

I just discovered that on ANY adsense link there is a clickable link 'Ads by Google' to Google itself and within the page that appears you can 'Report a policy violation regarding the site or ads you just saw' this is probably a good place to start. More info >

If you are affected, I'd love to hear from you in the comments below so we can start a conversation about this and hopefully get together and stop wallpapers-e and many other sites from continuing to Steal our PageRank and Visitors!

One part of the spacecraft will be sent into a crater on the moon and will smash up a plume into space and create a huge crater once the booster dives into the moon's rocky surface at nearly 9,000KPH, and then a second part of that same spacecraft will follow it in and make impact with the new crater that the first part creates.

Well It is a good way to find out if there might be any water / ice mixed up in the moons surface and the mission has been nicknamed "Got Water" by scientists involved in the experiment

"We can directly measure water ice, and then we can fly right through the plume," said LCROSS project manager Daniel Andrews.

Do Chav's know that they are Chav's? ... We all know that Chav's don't wash, but they must look in the mirror each afternoon once they crawl out of bed to make sure that their Burberry cap and gold necklaces look straight don't they?

We all know that Chav's are extremely fussy about their image and make damn sure that their face acne and Vitamin D starved skin is perfectly pizzafied and white.

So tell me? due to all this vanity each afternoon after the alcopop fueled night before, do they ever stop to look into their own reflected eyes, focus past the sexual desire for that 17 year old bird next door with only 8 kids and think 'dear god, I am a Chav!, I am one of those people I saw on telly last night getting beaten up by some cross dressing cage-fighters. Thats me!'
