Extreme Mission #18: Still Water

Marc is now on the 18th Extreme Mission. We will have more waiting as the third task requires to build 16 vehicles from the Chop Shop. I don’t mind spending reward points for speed builds when I can get skill points for them. The task in Mission #12 which requires us to buy 50 items from our Warehouse will do nothing for you if you spend reward points to speed it up. Zynga would make a lot more money if they changed that task to a New York property. Until they do, many will just wait the 50 days and forget about Extreme Mission and spend even less money to advance. I know that’s what I’m going to do!

Family Spreadsheets & Facts

A few days ago, the Family Ranks Spreadsheet was updated. A few new features were added and some facts were gathered as well. What Martin terms “Pageanation” was added to the bottom of the spreadsheet. You can now scroll through 100 families at a time. As of Feb 9th, there are a total of 16,598 registered families.

You can now view the averages of each family. Simply click on “Show Averages” and the number of Ices, Kills, Fights and Fights Won for each family will be divided by the number of members. To come back to the totals, click on “Hide Averages”.

When you click on any family name, you will be directed to their unique Family Rank Page. This page provides the family name, a working link to the in game Family Profile Page, the ranking in each category, a Ice/Kill progress graph, and each data point that has been generated in the past 218 days.

There is no need to worry if your family or the one you want to view isn’t in the Top 100 or even the Top 1,000. All you need to find the unique page for any family is the Family ID. To get this, use the Family ID Spocklet. Go the the Mafia Wars Family Profile Page of any family (your own included). From your Spockholm Tool Bar, type in Family ID and click on it.

You will then get the unique Family ID. Just remember the number.

Go back to the Family Rank Spreadsheet and paste the following into your browser bar.

No remove the “familyidnumber” and replace it with the Family ID number you just looked up.

Click enter and you will land on the Family Rank Page. It would have taken a lot of scrolling to find this family but using the method described above makes it easy.

The Family Rank Spreadsheet lists families in order of their fighting statistics and is updated by Team Spockholm at least once a week. Mike Nestor updates the Family List Spreadsheet which list families in the order they were created and displays their description. The Family List can be found here.

If you go to the bottom of the Skirmish/Battle Leaderboard, you will only find 15,505 families. The discrepancy of the two numbers could mean one of two things. Either Zynga doesn’t update the list or families aren’t placed on the leaderboards until they participate in a battle. From running the script that pulls up all the families, Mike noticed there were over 17,000 Family ID numbers but only 16,598 families currently exist. We aren’t sure what happened to these missing families.

There are 905 families with a battle score of 100.

Mike calculated the number of players registered to families and the total is 564,841. This number doesn’t quite match the application metrics but we all know these are extremely inflated. I can’t imagine there is a large number of actual players who aren’t in a family. Most who oppose the Family Module create a family of one. The total number of players registered in families is probably a more accurate monthly player statistic.

The Intended Limits of Mafia Poker

Because there are issues with the Poker Card requests, it’s been almost impossible to figure out the intended limits for Mafia Poker. I was able to track them down and what they should be is listed below. What they actually are do not match. Many find their news feed request is expired as soon as they post it and others have reported collecting more than 120 Poker Cards per 24 hours.

I tested this out today and did get the results that were intended. I took a screen shot of my Poker Card balance before generating a request and after. I received 20 Poker Cards.

Unfortunately, my next request didn’t work and the feed was expired. There are two possible reasons for this. Either the requests are bugged and Zynga will fix them or they decided that we could only collect 20 per day from requests. Just because you can ask every 4 hours doesn’t necessarily mean you can get more. It’s very possible that the original specs of 20/request have been changed to 20/day. We won’t really know until more time passes.

I used the 20 cards I got from my request and then performed a scan using Stream Scanner. I was able to collect 120 Poker Cards. The reset time for when you can collect more Poker Cards from the news feeds is either 12am PST or your local reset time. I can’t say for sure because both my times are the same.

Hopefully Zynga will iron out the bugs or let us know what they intend for this feature. If they didn’t rig anything, the odds of winning a hand in Mafia Poker should be 50% (1). We need at total of 120 wins to get the loot item with the highest stats. Assuming a 1:1 win/loss ratio, you would need a total of 1,200 cards. We can get this many by only collecting from the news feeds in the allotted time of 10 days. If we can also collect 120 per day by asking then nobody should have problems mastering this uneventful event!

Zynga did let us know that we are to only get one item (1). Unlike the first version of Mafia Poker, we don’t get to keep each loot item earned. It’s one item and the stats improve as you master each level. It’s not called a Single Malt for nothing.

3 Second Penalty Removed from the Gift Collector

A few days ago, a 3 second penalty was imposed on the Gift Collector for those who chose not to send thank you gifts to their mafia (1). After strong objections from players who prefer this method, Team Spockholm decided to remove it as they didn’t feel they should in any way tell players how to play the game.

The strongest arguments for it’s removal came from players who use their secondary accounts to blast the same gift hundreds of times (yes it can be done!) and they didn’t want to be slowed down by returning gifts.

You will no longer be imposed with the extra wait time. If you choose not to send gifts back to the players who need them to upgrade their properties then you will have bad gift karma!

Love And War Gift #2: Candied Grenade Pin

You need to collect 4,8 and 16 Candied Grenade Pins to master each level.

Another Secret District Nerf

Many of us took note that purchasing Secret Districts was an excellent way to acquire skill points. Spending 35 reward points to get 36 skill points is a great deal. Zynga must have taken note as well because they nerfed this feature and players are no longer allowed to repeat Secret Districts more than once. El Burro, competed the district 14 times before hit with the nerf.

From now on when you unlock and master a Secret District, it will remain open until the timer runs out. In the example below, Doug Knights, one of my family members, unlocked and mastered Smuggler’s Haven. He was ready to unlock El Dorado and found that he was unable to do this. He now has to wait over 10 days until the timer for Smuggler’s Haven runs out.

Normally when we master a purchased Secret District, it disappears and you can pay again to unlock it. Now the district will remain for the duration of the timer.

This shouldn’t surprise any of us. Zynga pulled the same tactic when Skill Point Reallocation was launched. They realized after the fact that it was a great deal and nerfed the feature so it would appear randomly. Initially is was present in the Marketplace at all times and you were limited on how many you could purchase. Now it shows up randomly and most of us miss out (1).

Many who were able to master Smuggler’s Haven multiple times have reported that all but one of their mastery item, Ballistic Bliss, were removed from their inventory. This is not something intentional and is not part of the nerf. If this has happened to you, contact Customer Support. Mandy found a thread on the Zynga forums and shared it on our fan page. Big Delicious, Super Moderator, made the following reply to a the thread (1).

Mafia Poker Nerfs & Omissions

There is some bad news about Mafia Poker Season 2. According to the Official Mafia Wars Blog, we won’t get to keep all the mastery items we earn like we did with the last season. When it is all said and done, we will end up with one loot item! That’s hardly worth all the spam.

”As you progress towards Mastery Levels, you will receive one Bronze Mastery item – Single Malt after completing 10 wins. Stats of this item will be updated as you progress towards higher Mastery Levels up to Emerald Mastery.”

I immediately checked my inventory to make sure that all of my Fortune Tellers from the first season were still there. Fortunately they were.

In my post outlining Mafia Poker Season 2, it was difficult to determine the limits for Poker Card requests because not everybody is getting the same results (1). The Mafia Wars Blog post was formatted as a FAQ so I thought these very frequently asked questions would be answered. All they did was copy/paste their last post and didn’t bother to tell us how many Poker Cards we could get from requests or the news feeds. This is information we need to know now so we can plan a strategy.

Q: How do I get cards?
A: You can request your friends for cards through feeds and get cards in return when you help them. You can also buy cards using Reward Points.

It’s been over 4 hours and I’ve been able to generate 2 news feed requests. I gained 15 Poker Cards from my first request before it expired and my second one retuned a grand total of 0! Obviously there are issues already. Based on what other players have gotten, I suspect we are supposed to get 20 Poker Cards per request. Since the big pay off is only one loot item, I don’t even care.

Group Sale: Bulletproof Spine

Things aren’t looking very good for the Marketplace Group Sale feature. The Short-Eared Fox didn’t even make it to the Gold Level. This should send a message to Zynga that players are fed up. Why purchase loot anymore when some players could get any item they wanted for free. This is another impact of the latest exploit that has been totally ignored by Zynga (1).

The next Group Sale item is the Bulletproof Spine. If you catch it early it will cost 15 reward points. Keep in mind that the stats probably won’t go above 90/141.

Valentine’s Day Massacre

The Valentine’s Day Massacre sounds really cool until you read about it on your Home Page banner. It’s just another Marketplace gimmick that has the same structure as the 7 Day of Holidays (1). Each day a new “Deal” becomes available and you need to pay 45 reward points to unlock it. If you unlock a deal, you will be eligible to unlock the next and better deal.

Last time the deals were 40 reward points so Zynga is trying to take advantage of the collectors or they sold a lot of these during the last event and want to see how much player are willing to spend.

If you open up the “Click here” link, you can see what all the deals are.

Zynga’s explanation for how this “event” works is shown below. They need to add the option of waiting until they mess up the code so you can get 500 of each for free! Before purchasing don’t forget about the request exploit that Zynga hasn’t done anything about (1).

If you purchase a “Deal”, you will get congratulated on the banner. Be careful not to click on the purchase buttons by mistake because there is no confirmation. The Day 1 Deal is a Mail Shirt.

You need to check your inventory to verify that you received the item you purchased.

The loot items offered in this event account for 7 of the “Special Event” items that were added to the inventory yesterday (1).

Below is a breakdown of what you will spend. If you purchase all 7 Deals then you will spend about 12 reward points per item which is a deal when it comes to loot.

Mafia Poker Season 2

Juliana and her Poker Cards are back and Mafia Poker Season 2 is here. If you missed all the action in the first season, go here for a review of how Mafia Poker works. There is are a few differences (some good, some bad) but most of the event remains the same.

We get more 3 extra days this season and Juliana covers up her cleavage. I guess she doesn’t feel the need to show some skin because she is sharing the banner with a motorcycle instead of the creepy Fortune Teller.

The big difference between the two Mafia Poker Seasons is how we acquire Poker Cards. You will notice they are not on the Free Gift Page this time around.

Other than purchasing Poker Cards with reward points, the only way to get them is through using the news feeds. There is now a “Ask Cards” button on the Home Page banner. When you click on it, it auto-posts to your wall and a timer of 4 hours is initiated.

You can also ask for Poker Cards from the Mafia Poker Page but only if you have less than 5.

When your mafia members click on your request, you will get a Poker Card and they will get one too.

It appears we can get 15 Poker Cards from the request. I won’t know if this is daily or every 4 hours. We are allowed to ask for Artillery Shells and Reinforced Concrete once every 6 hours but are limited to 20 per day. UPDATE: You can ask for Poker Cards every 4 hours but once you hit the max for the day, you won’t get anymore. I got 15 on two accounts, Mike Nestor got 17 and I’ve seen other numbers reported. It’s unclear how many you can get each day.

Once you have received the maximum number of Poker Cards from your request, the feed will return expired. It’s says “Try again later” so I’m hoping this is a sign that we will be able to get Poker Cards every 4 hours.

You can get many more Poker Cards by helping your mafia. If you don’t like to play the scroll, click and load game, use the Stream Scanner to search for Poker Cards. The tab you are looking for is “Mafia Poker” and the requests say “Send a card”.

I got 120 Poker Cards from my scan before I hit the limit. I’m not sure if this is going to be every 24 hours or every 4 hours and won’t know until 4 hours has passed. It would be nice if Zynga used a more specific word than “later”, tomorrow or in 4 hours would be much better! UPDATE: I was able to scan for more Poker Cards at the 4 hour mark and this time collected 148 before reaching the limit. I still don’t know if this was because of the midnight reset or if we can collect more cards every 4 hours. There doesn’t seem to be much consistency between accounts so it’s very hard to say how many Poker Cards we can collect per day. Maybe Zynga will let us know!

Once I hit the max, I had 135 Poker Cards. The 15 I got from asking and the 120 I got for sending.

If we are limited to 120 plus the ones our mafia send to us then it’s going to be much more difficult to master this season. In the first Mafia Poker, we could accept up to 250 per day and many had trouble finishing.

Once you gather enough Poker Cards, it’s time to play Mafia Poker. The rules and strategies have not changed. Win the hand and you get credit towards mastery. It’s best to conserve Poker Cards so the 5 Card No Draw strategy works best. For a review of poker basics and this strategy, go here.

The loot reward is a Single Malt. Once you get 10, 25, 50, 80 and 120 wins, you will get one with the stats shown below. Last season we got to keep them all.

For Mafia Poker Season 1, we needed a total of 150 wins to gain 100% mastery. Needing 30 less wins will help a lot.

You will get a popup when you hit each milestone.

If you don’t like all the clicking it takes to actually play the game, the Heinz-a-Nator by Team Spockholm will do it for you. This tools follows the 5 Card No Draw strategy.

Fight Loot Generation 13

Another fight loot ad was found in the servers. This one is labeled for March in the servers and will be the 13th generation of fight loot. We are currently on generation 11.

The featured item is a Chrome Hogs and is not in the inventory. The image can be located in the servers.

5 days ago, the banner for fight loot generation 12 was located (1). Hopefully we will soon see one for Fight Club loot!

Mafia Poker Season 2: Coming Soon

The Single Malt was one of the new items added to our inventories last night (1). The stars and stats of this item could only mean one thing! It looks like there will be another season of Mafia Poker!

Rumor has it that we will be able to get Poker Cards from the news feeds this time around. This will be a good thing if they are also available as free gifts and a very bad thing if they aren’t. If we have to beg for all of our cards, they might as well call this a Limited Time Property!

Secret District Timer Confusion

There seems to be some confusion regarding the Secret District Timers. I explained how it works here but will review since one of the Smuggler’s Haven timers is about to expire. If you haven’t unlocked Smuggler’s Haven, you timer has about an hour and a half left.

There is no need to freak out if you did unlock this district because your timer will have however much time is left of 12 days from the time you unlocked it. In the example below, I have . The one and a half hour timer above marks the amount of time there is left to pay to unlock it.

Now if you jumped the gun and unlocked El Dorado, you don’t even have a timer for Smuggler’s Haven.

You can’t have two unlocked Secret Districts in the same destination at the same time. If you really want to repeat Smuggler’s Haven, you need to fully master El Dorado before the main timer runs out. If you can make that happen, your timer for Smuggler’s Haven will reset to 12 days.

El Dorado Returns With Nerfs

Yesterday we learned that there would be another Secret District when a countdown timer for El Dorado appeared in game. El Dorado is now available and once unlocked, there are 12 days to complete it.

If you are working on Smuggler’s Haven, you will have to wait. The rule seems to be that you can only have one Secret District unlocked at the same time. This must be a programming obstacle because I can’t imagine why Zynga would limit something that costs reward points!

If you don’t have an active Secret District, you can choose which one you want.

If you recall, El Dorado had some great experience/energy ratios. Many were looking forward to having this Secret District available. Go here if you need to review the details of the original El Dorado. Zynga decreased the mastery percentages of most of the jobs and the ratios are much lower. I compared the two on the Ruby Level and the results are listed below.

Because the mastery payout for each job requiring them was reduced, we will need more than we did the first time around. The original version of El Dorado required 208 Jungle Maps and the nerfed version requires 236.

2 Day Extension for the Hangar!

I’ve made several posts about news feed issues this week. In the last one, I pointed out that this was making it difficult for players to upgrade their Hangar. The image below was taken at 11:49pm PST. At the time, there were 4 Days and 17 hours left on the Hangar timer.

Today I noticed the timer is at 6 Days and 9 hours. An additional 48 hours was added to the timer! I looked for some type of announcement from Zynga but didn’t see anything on the blog, fan page, customer support or forums. They really do like us to use “self discovery” to get our information!

The 3 Second Penalty Wait!

When accepting gifts from our ZMC, we have 3 options. We can accept and return, just accept or ignore. When it comes to accepting, the obvious choice for those who care about helping their mafia is the “Accept Gift and Thanks” button. It’s faster to click the “Accept Gift” link but your mafia member doesn’t get a gift back. The same is true with the “Ignore” link but there is a workaround. Using the Spockholm Gift Collector will send return gifts when they are ignored (1).

The Gift Collector has a “Send gifts back” box. The default is checked but players who don’t want to return gifts to their mafia can uncheck it.

In the example below, I ignored all of the Red Roses in my ZMC because I no longer need them and don’t want the boosts. I left the “Send gifts back “ box checked and you can see in the log that return requests were made.

On a recent episode of the Informant Podcast, Jana and I questioned why anyone would choose not to send a gift back. Pete explained it was a little bit faster but we all agreed it was rude. After listening to the show, Eike came up with a solution that will protect us all from selfish mafia members. If you uncheck the “Send gifts back” box, a 3 second penalty will be imposed. The log message will read “Not sending gift back, 3s penalty wait.

The same will happen if you accept gifts and opt not to return them.

If you don’t want to help your mafia or take the 3 second penalty, the ZMC is the place for you! Click, Click, Click…it is faster!
