The Color Story of the corridor was fun to work with. I decided to go with a spectrum of Secondary Colors (Oranges, Greens, Purples) and some Greys/Blacks. Instead of mixing the whole hallway up with color I treated each panel as it's own section of a bigger story. So the ratios of color change as you pass from one end to the next. Blazing Oranges at one end and Tranquil Purples at the other end, and a healthy spread of Greens mixed into the middle section.

Working this way forced me to flex some different Color Theory ideas than I typically do in these Abstract Murals, especially since it's in such a unique/narrow viewing environment. I have 7 illustrations in the new issue of Revue Feuilleton (Paris). A couple Vectorfunk Mandalas, the Red Momentum Bike, some Matthew Scissorhands collages, and a few from my Parallel Universe series. (Cover by : Mike Lemanski). Wired 20.03 : Famous Pirate Flags.

Last month I had the pleasure of working with my friends at Wired Magazine on this graphic narrative about famous pirate flags. I was asked to design 6 of them. They needed to be quite simplistic since they would appear in print about the size of postage stamps across the bottom of an article (see below for configuration). This forced me to look at it more as a Logo Exploration than a Vector Illustration project. I really enjoy these projects that get me thinking in new ways, and over the years Wired has been like a team of mentors. Thanks Margaret & Tim! Grateful for all the meaningful critiques and guidance. Also check out my Wired Illustrations Archive and the last Mega 20 Project I did with them last Summer.

Here's a funny set of evolutionary skulls from the early stages of dialing in the right level of detail. Some didn't even get features before I gave up on them. Toothless octagon for the win!

Had a great video shoot today with new friends Carlos and Tanit. Thanks so much guys. This clip will be epic! Definitely the best way to show a 100m mural to folks who can't experience it in person. One of the projects I am working on this EU trip is a 4th floor mural at an awesome new Art Hotel by the beach here in Barcelona. I've been doing prep and getting supplies lined up. Excited to begin painting tomorrow. That's me in the way back. 50 meters away. And there are 2 sides to muralize. Long bomba!

Friday Flashback : 2001 Way Way Back.

Earlier this week I was hanging with a group of longtime friends and we were sifting through shoe boxes of pre-digital-camera photos of walls and canvases. I went home and dug up my box of Funsaver (remember those) snaps. Very nostalgic. It feels like lifetimes ago. This one jumped out at me because I remember exactly when I painted it. The first Fall I was in Maine. Mostly using hardware store art supplies like sponge brushes, American spraypaint, penny and washer stencils, palette knives, and aggressive wet-paint carving with a screwdriver. Definitely a sloppy hot mess. Definitely heavily inspired by Kandinsky, Picasso, Basquiat. Definitely a fun painting process. Stay tuned in the coming months for more flash(way)backs. Click-Zoom.
