NYC Museum Marathon.

I’ve enjoyed working on this new series of mandala designs in my free time between other projects for the past year. I am happy to now share the results of my most in-depth and refined graphic exploration yet.

My goal was to create as many different unique vector mandalas as I could with a few key parameters: Each would be limited to a 6-color palette to enable future applications in textile, tapestries, rugs, stonework, etc. I endeavored for each to have a strong presence at any scale, whether screen sized, or supersized as a marble floor (dream big, right?). Essentially the same overall concept for each one, harmonious complexity and balanced symmetry. But always a different path to the result, referencing my decades of exploring and evolving my own visual vocabulary.

After quite a deep dive I reached the point where I felt more than satisfied with the fleet, having arrived at over 40 designs that naturally fit into 4 distinct chapters. But I did not feel finished with working on this series. I then zoomed back into each one to create a family of extracted elements, variations, alternates, repeat patterns, blueprints, and 2c versions. A similar process to how I often approach branding assignments, building the primary image first and then creating peripheral material directly from it, in the end arriving at a memorable and cohesive 360º story.

For my entire life I have been drawn to, and loved to draw, complex mandalas. This type of exploration truly is a form of meditation for me. I find myself fully focused on staying centered, balancing the elements, simultaneously concentrated on the big picture and the finest details. This past year my personal artwork focus, or should I say my graphic target practice, was deep in this vectorfunk world, and I had a blast :)

Just wrapped up this fun 80’ panorama mural for my friends at The Portland Zoo. All spray & limited to the brands 5 colors, an enjoyable challenge with this ‘Crystals & Lasers’ style of layered geometry. It had been a while since I painted one of these & I had a blast. Stay tuned for more photos & videos from the evening time when the spot is popping. Def one of my favorite places to catch a cold beverage after a bike ride around the peninsula. Big up to Chris, Mark, & the Zoo Crew!

SHADOVVS : Mandala Series 2022.

I’ve been having a blast working on a new series of 3D works. For this collection I focused on organic symmetries & designed each almost entirely with groovy curved lines. Each was painted with just one matte color to allow the lighting & shadows to enhance the dimensionality. I’ve done the best I can to document the final works & some of the process too, but as with all 3D artworks these are best experienced IRL. I was pleasantly surprised to realize the acrylic sheets I used for the cuts are in fact only semi-opaque & when lit up each tier of the design takes on a different shade. Definitely something I will be experimenting more with in future works. I really enjoy creating these 3D works & I am always searching for opportunities to bring them to life for XL installations. *Surf thru my recently updated website to see all past #Shadovvs work.

I recently had the pleasure of collaborating with LandYachtz on a collection of new skateboard designs. The first one to drop is this fast & fun 28.5” ‘Dinghy Classic’ cruiser. It’s always a dream come true to have my designs featured on boards. Some of my earliest memories of deciding to be a graphic artist were inspired by my love of this culture & all the rad artworks that are showcased on the gear. Aquatic Camouflage : Bluescale Series.

Over the holidays I unplugged for a while & dove into this freeform exploration with paint & ink on panels. Conceptually this work is new twist on the organic flow of my past Tropical Camo & Bluescale works. Inspired by all things water, including ice (plenty of that around here these days). My initial doodles & early layers of paint looked like they could have been outer space satellite views of rivers/tributaries, magnified frozen puddles, or where my daydreams most often take me during wintertime, snorkeling adventures. Usually around this time of year I create a series of greyscale paintings & I still plan to before spring arrives. But this was a refreshing way to keep things monochromatic in a more uplifting way, playing with all the hues of the winter blues. New #SHADOVVS installation in Downtown SF at a prominent Tech Company office. This one was a blast to design. We went for a matte black-on-black finish, the first time with this palette on my extruded wall sculptures, and I love it! Wrapping around a corner, from a naturally lit hallway into the lounge area, the full experience is quite large at 45’ X 10’. Swipe thru for a few different views & check the final slide for an animated panorama of the full blueprint showing elevations for each layer. Big thanks to The Client, Architects @bhdmdesign, & Install Team @pinksparrow. These are some of my favorite projects to work on & I am grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with such talented folks to bring these #SHADOVVS environments to life.
