Over the starlit open sea we come
in canoes of white and blue to Ponape.
We mark Polaris’ height with upright thumb:
the only guide we need to keep the sea-way.

Mokil to Ponape is many miles;
but our craft are agile and as swift as gulls
who wing at will among these happy isles;
we’ve wider sails than most, and keen-carved hulls.

Outriggers skim from crest to white-lipped crest
and lift in speed on moonward flowing swells.
Throughout the night the mothering wind holds west;
at morning light we hear the mission bells

and sight, far off, the Sokhes sentry rock
arising from the sea’s sun-misted breath,
pandanus foresting his gibbous back
and silhouetted palms about his chest.

He’s lord upon the wide Pacific blue
that lays eternal siege to him, and roars
with furious foam on reefs deployed below,
then crawls to lick his mangrove-rooted shores.

The mission wall is crumbling under vines.
Good Father Costigan waits by the gate.
We come to have his blessing, tell our sins,
and hear how God’s love conquers, soon or late.

I come to pray for seven hundred souls
who call me king: Maria, queen of all,
protect my people; save our fragile atoll
when typhoons rage and atom fires fall.

Carthage (111.), May 28.— The Rev. and Mrs. Rand of this city have for some years acted as missionaries in the Caroline Islands. They returned home from those islands a few days ago. They expect in a short time to lay before the American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions at Boston the full statements of the wrongs done them and the natives.

This board, under whose auspices Mr. and Mrs. Rand went to Ponapi in 1874, is acquainted with the main facts leading up to the troubles on these islands. The world in general has not known of these outrages in detail, and Mr. Rand has made them generally public for the first time.

In 1887 Spain sent Governor Possidilio to the islands to assume charge. He began to make slaves of the natives, requiring them to work constantly and to furnish their own food.

In September, 1889, Spain sent reinforcements to the islands under command of a new Governor, Carrossa. Carrossa, learning that King Paul df the Metabilim tribe had not proposed to submit to Spain's demands, ordered the native villages shelled and a general on slaught on the islands.

The missionaries were notified that they should no longer teach and that they must go away or suffer the consequences. Consequently the American missionaries boarded the missionary ship, the Morning Star, and went to tho Island of Mokil.

In the meantime the Spanish ships opened fire on the native villagers, pouring a constant rain of shells and bullets into the huts of the natives. This warfare was kept up for three days, aud the natives were assailed by land troops. But only three natives were killed in this battle, while the Spanish loss was 300.

This was the last battle between Spain and the natives, and since then Spain has been endeavoring to compel the stubborn tribes to yield to that power. King Paul, who is much of a Christian, says he will never yield to Spain. Mr. Rand says his return to the islands will depend altogether upon what action is taken in the matter by the Government of the United States and the action of Spain.
