Friday Night at the Cheeseboard I didn't actually eat at the Cheeseboard this past week, but I did walk by Friday evening and was inspired to take the above video. The Cheeseboard is one reason I love living in Berkeley and especially in the "gourmet ghetto." What makes the Cheeseboard so special? In the first place it's a co-op, owned by the workers....in other words, communist! Yes, Lenin lives in Berkeley! Secondly, they have live music by amazingly good muscians, mostly blues and rock but I've heard reggae and salsa there as well. Third reason: the Cheeseboard only serves one...

David Bunnell (left) and Don Nace, 1968, Iowa City, Iowa. My childhood and lifelong friend Don Nace is finally getting a taste of fame. This past Sunday he scattered hundreds of his drawings across the floor of a mansion in New York (click here) and now he's profiled in the current issue of the artsy publication, Slack Lust (click here). I always knew he would get there someday, and as I told Slack Lust writer Stacy Dachaux, it has always been my wish that he would get there before he dies! Looks like he's finally made it!

20 people. 5 families. Fresh food intervention. How low can their BPA levels go? It sounds like the premise for a reality show. But there are no over-the-top TV antics here. Last week, the Breast Cancer Fund and Silent Spring Institute released a study which tested the levels of the toxic chemical BPA for five families. Like many average families across America, these families were regularly exposed to BPA in their day to day lives through pretty normal activities: eating canned foods and beverages, eating in restaurants, using polycarbonate water bottles, and/or microwaving in plastic. To see if their BPA...

Toenail Study Finds No Heart Risk from Mercury in Fish Thousands of people who donated their toenail clippings for science may have helped resolve the vexing question of whether the heart-health advantages of eating fish outweigh the risks of mercury in fish. Harvard scientists analyzing mercury in toenails - a more accurate measure of long-term exposure than blood testing - report no link between even the highest levels of mercury and increased risk of heart disease or stroke. In fact, they found a slight protective association, probably because of other nutritional benefits of fish, even varieties higher in mercury such...
