What is sea buckthorn?

The seabuckthorns (Hippophae L.) are deciduous shrubs in the genus Hippophae, family Elaeagnaceae. It is also referred to as “sea buckthorn”, seabuckthorn, sandthorn, seaberry, “sacred fruit”, or “liquid gold” when referring to its oil and juice).

It is by far the most widespread of the species in the genus, with a range extending from the Atlantic coasts of Europe right across to northwestern China. The English name of seabuckthorn may have to do with the fact that in Western Europe, it is largely confined to sea coasts where salt spray off the sea prevents other larger plants from out-competing it, but in central Asia it is more widespread in dry semi-desert sites where other plants cannot survive the dry conditions. In central Europe and Asia it also occurs as a subalpine shrub above tree line mountains, and other sunny areas such as river banks. They are tolerant of salt in the air and soil, but demand full sunlight for good growth and do not tolerate shady conditions near larger trees. They typically occur in dry, sandy areas and can thrive in such hard oil as arsenic sands where few other plants can even survive.

More than 90 percent or about 1.5 million hectares of the world’s sea buckthorn wild forest or plantations can be found in Tibet, China where the plant is utilized for soil and water conservation purposes, including prevention of oil erosion, sand drift and holding of precious water.

While you read about the wonderfully wide variety of health nutrients it provides to humans, please be aware that it also has a strong ability of fixing nitrogen by its roots, for use of other inhabitants of Mother earth.

Save Money by Menu Planning

I've been offline for a while....life happened to get in the way of doing what I do here. To be honest I wasn't even couponing for the past three months. Totally not practicing what I preach. I didn't think it was having an impact on our family until I took a look back at how much we spent at the grocery store. We averaged $508 a month for the past three months. Talk about sticker shock. I almost fainted. I knew the cost of food was rising and was too exhausted by life to deal with coupons or shopping but didn't realize the extent of the damage. When I realized we spent 5x our budget on groceries I decided to do something about it.

I sat down with a pen and paper and decided I'm going to make life easy for myself and really get menu planning down to a science. I used to check the sales each week and plan my meals accordingly. It took a lot of time and planning. If you're not in the mood it can wear you out. (I hear a lot of complaints about how it takes too much time, etc., which is true if you do it this way.) To save myself time and effort I wrote a list of all the most common meals we eat at my house. I included Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Snacks are fresh fruit or vegetables, yogurt or granola bars.

I took the list to the kitchen and checked my pantry and freezer to see what we had on hand. If we had all the ingredients it went on the calendar as a meal. If we didn't, it went onto next week's plan and I put the missing ingredients on my shopping list. When all was said and done I spent a total of $120 out of pocket and have enough food to feed my family for a month, with the exception of fresh produce. I'll have to make a few trips out to pick that up as needed. For the two hours it took me to compile all my lists I've immediately saved the family $388 at the grocery store. Planning the menu not only saves our wallet (and waistlines) from fast food joints, it also helps me reinvent leftovers and stretch meats when needed.

Breakfasts:
Breakfasts are easy. We are a family of cereal, bagel, english muffin, oatmeal and toast eaters. Occasionally we make make eggs and bacon, or pancakes, but never on a school day. I made sure to stock up on these items.

Lunches:
When I was employed we took leftovers for lunch everyday. My oldest daughter bought school lunch. It used to be easy. Now lunch is a bit trickier for me. In my mind I can't always justify spending $4 or $5 on a package of lunch meat so I wasn't buying it at all. Now I realize if I don't spend $5 on lunch meat (which is enough for several sandwiches) I will be spending $10 - $20 on a single fast food lunch for the family. So even if I don't have a coupon for what I want I will buy it now. I also know to stock up on these items when they are on sale or there is a coupon available. I picked up a few of those skillet meals in a box (the ones you just add meat to) to switch it up for Saturday and Sunday lunches. Salads are another favorite lunch of mine.

Dinners:
For me, not the best cook in the world (but not the worst), it's hard to get creative with dinners. No one in my family can agree on what they like to eat. I am the only one who eats meatloaf, my hubby is the only one who eats spicy foods, my oldest daughter hates meat and my youngest daughter only wants to eat ramen noodles. Trying to plan meals around everyone's wants was impossible so I compromised. We eat foods that have meat alternatives (or at least enough nutrition in the sides I don't feel bad if Oldest skips the meat), I offer a pasta or rice side for Little, and I make foods that are good bland or spicy for Hubby. Yes, there are meals I make that my hubby won't eat and meals I make where I am the only one eating, but we always have dinner on the table. My new rule is, "If you don't like it, don't eat, but don't ask for something else."

Here's a sample menu plan for my family. Since breakfasts are "help yourself" easy meals, lunches are sandwiches and snacks are granola bars, yogurt, fresh fruit or veggies I am only listing dinners.

Chili with white rice
Kale Stew
Pot Roast, Carrots, Potatoes
Beef Stroganoff (using leftover pot roast and leftover white rice or leftover spaghetti noodles with no sauce)
Lime Grilled Chicken, Roasted Potatoes, Green Beans, Fried Cabbage
Lobster Bake
Crockpot (whole) chicken, Broccoli, Stuffing
Chicken & Yellow Rice (using leftover chicken from last night)
Beans on bread (freeze leftovers to use for 2nd meal or to mash for refried beans to serve on taco night)
Shake & Bake Chicken, Potatoes, Broccoli (leftover)
Salmon, Sauteed Zucchini (home grown zucchini), White Rice (made fresh is no leftovers)
Pot Roast, Salad
Chicken Quarters, salad
Beef Stroganoff over rice
White Fish, Salad, French Fries
Leftover night

Can you see what I'm doing here? Typing it out it seems like we may have Pot Roast too often, but we are only having it every 9 days so it doesn't see too much. I try to serve similar sides through the week too. For example, bagged salad was on sale and there was a coupon available so I got 4 bags for FREE which means lots of salads for lunches and dinners. There will always be days we want to switch things up or even go out to eat and that is okay. The $388 I've "saved" by planning will go towards those days.

My girls love to read so we are always on the lookout for new, exciting, age appropriate books to add to our home library. Naturally, when I was offered the opportunity to review a new line of children's books from AdoraPet I eagerly jumped at the chance. We chose to receive the books "On The Farm" and "Chefs" to facilitate our review.

On The Farm is about Pima Puppy and Pico Puppy's day on a farm. The book teaches about the hard work needed to run a farm, as well as teaching children where our food comes from. We grow a lot of our own food, and On The Farm helps Serena understand the process on a much larger scale.

Chefs is about Pima Puppy and Pico Puppy's adventures in the kitchen. Both of my girls like to cook with me, and Chefs is a great introduction to the ways of a working kitchen. It even includes a bonus cookie recipe! Yum!
