10 Places to Wear a Novelty T-shirt

If you have been following this blog for any length of time then you know of my fondness for novelty t-shirts from Threadless. Generally I shy away from slogans which quickly become outdated or are corny and lean more towards shirts with a hidden message within an image, or at least messages with character that reflect some aspect of my personality:

For the most part I think novelty shirts are not anytime-you-wanna-wear-it shirts unless you are a student. If you are a grown woman I think you should be more selective when you wear them and how often otherwise you just look lazy — a stereotype unfortunately that has plagued novelty t-shirts for decades. Here is my list of places you can safely (and I encourage) you to wear novelty tees like the ones featured here (in no particular order):

The Doctors Office
Grocery Shopping
Bike Riding
To the Gym
Hanging Out at Home
School
House parties
Pool Side
Line Dancing
Bed

Novelty tees are great for layering so do not be afraid to wear them with a khaki or denim jacket, jeans, skirts, dress pants etc.

One of my favorite things about novelty t-shirts is they are excellent conversation pieces — if someone finds your shirt interesting they will comment on it — huge ice breaker. For example, I once wore a Threadless tee to a new neurologist appointment and she recognized it as a Threadless tee. It was a great warm up to the pressing conversation to come.

Give some thought to the novelty tees you choose then wear them with pride.

Urban Accessories

One of the things I love about Twitter is that I get exposed to unique businesses that I would not normally; like Haute Brown Sugar, an online jewelry boutique for urban, funky jewelry at incredibly affordable prices. I instantly fell in love with these five pieces:

Alternative Stripes

As much as I love horizontal stripes there are many of you who just cannot bring your self to break the “rule” so I spent the afternoon looking for alternatives and I was not disappointed. Here are a six of my favorite alternatives to straight horizontal stripes.

Boots from Avenue

More and more plus size clothing companies are trying to become inclusive with their shopping by providing accessories like shoes. Boots are often a sore spot for many women because of the calf sizes. Avenue has a nice selection of cute boots with wide calves and wide widths. And they currently have a wonderful boot sale where none of the boots are over $55.

Casual Blue Dresses

Red Sole Sneakers

It seems like red sole sneakers are following me everywhere. First I watch a comedy special featuring Robin Williams and he is dressed all in black except for the black sneakers with bright red soles; not just the bottoms either, the rubber strip that goes around the whole shoe, that is usually white, was red. At the time I thought they were pretty cool then forgot about them.

Until a few days later when I was out doing errands and a young man was walking towards me and what do I see? Black sneakers and the same kind of red soles.

Yesterday I got up to the sound of the dog barking out the front window. I went to check what the commotion was and who should be walking by? A woman with black sneakers with red soles. I swear they are multiplying.

I went online today and found Puma Suede Classic Eco sneakers ($65) in black with red soles at Zappos. They are a sharp looking sneaker that come in women’s and men’s sizing and they are definitely one of my new favorite sneakers — obviously, I have been conditioned with all the exposure but look how cool they look:
