The rivalry between the teams goes back years and the intervarsity is an opportunity to gain bragging rights for the season.

The basketball games began started at 08h30 with the 2nd teams; both University of Pretoria teams (women and men) won, setting the high standard for the senior teams. At 12h30, the 1st team ladies game started. Due to time constraint, the games were 20min halves, running time thus teams had to play hard and smart from the beginning as the recovery time was little. The first half Tuks ladies dominated as they played their usual game of good defence while UJ played their game of good offense. With many of the old UJ players gone most people thought that the game belonged to UP but that was in vain. In the second half Tuks ladies looked out of shape as most walked occasionaly back on defence. When the Tuks defence cracked UJ just kept scoring 3-pointer after 3pointer giving them a very confortable lead. In the end UJ won 51-30.

At 13h30 men 1st team game began. Both sides looked determined and hungry for the victory. Both sides had a lot of new players and from the warm up it looked like it would be an interesting game.
The score was head to head for the first half. Tuks men, as the underdogs stepped up to the plate played a good game of basketball. In the 2nd half and Tuks men looked like a different team as they slowly lost the game and UJ dominating. In the end the pressure was too much for the Pretoria team and UJ won 58-40.

In the summary. UP dominated the 2nd teams games but the 1st teams could not meet the standards set. So the 2010 intervarsity bragging rights go to UJ.

University of Johannesburg, Bunting Road, Auckland Park

Furthermore, if players are unable to attend this Sunday due to a tournament or school holidays, GBA will be running a second day of trials on the weekend of 6 March 2010 (details to be confirmed). If your players intend to participate in these trials they must have proof that they could not be in attendance this coming weekend.

It is our vision to see an annual program established for the Team GBA programme that creates a greater consistency to provincial elite talent management for all age groups. Furthermore, although we have not to date secured a sponsor for this event, we are doing what we can to create the necessary resources for the U18 teams to participate in the upcoming IPTs at which national teams will be selected. We do not view the upcoming tournament as being the only highlight of the 2010 U18 program and we will be extending the U18 provincial duty this year to creating vital energy and excitement for the sport at grassroots development. Our value proposition is thus, that by your players participating in the 2010 U18 Gauteng teams we are developing provincial and national talent for the future through a more robust elite Gauteng basketball programme.

“The wheels are moving’ said Gauteng Basketball chairperson Nthato Selebi at the GBA meeting this past Saturday, The pace is relatively slow considering various facts, and by the looks of things GBA is experiencing a slow puncher.

Adequate communication was sent out to the public regarding the meeting, hence the impressive turn out. Africa basket showed some love and of course mybasketball to name a few of the media present at the meeting. The point of the meeting was to give feedback to the Gauteng basketball community about what the current status looks like and where it’s going. Basically Gauteng Basketball only has a measly R309 to work with, reason why Gauteng didn’t send teams to the senior IPT’s in Durban last year.Selebi went on to discus the GBAs’ mandate during their interim. This mandate being;

Coming up with a new structure that will work for basketball. Due to the lack of representation GBA is planning a road show to various constituencies to propose the new structure.

Better communication; hats off to the general secretary Kornelia Semmelink for continuously keeping the public in the loop on; what is going on in the GBA office, meetings and general information.

Continue with current projects. This will apply to the u/18 as the junior IPT’s will be on the 27th of April 2010 in the Northwest. Individuals who would like to be part of the Gauteng u/18 team are requested to send their curriculum vitae to basketbalgp@gmail.com by March 6 2010.

Last but not least the question on, what is happening with the league? Though some will not be impressed, GBA decided to bring Pro Sport Consulting back to run the 2010 league. After long discussions and meetings between the two parties. The decision was made that the ten week league will only start in August due to practical reasons of the soccer world cup happening in three months.

While we wait, GBA encourages the basketball community to run tournaments during the next two months with the condition that GBA is notified about the tournaments.

Unfortunately the above is what the current GBA committee can offer at this stage till the Annual General Meeting that will be held on the 30th of May 2010 (Venue to be confirmed). Never the less, a job well done to the guys for putting team effort in what use to be a one man fraternity.

SHOOT AROUND: It’s been a while since I’ve sat down to jot about the game that I love to live for. Many things have happened and since then, I’ve continued to keep my eyes on the game and meeting like minded guys who also love to engage about the game. In this, I would like to send a shout out to the crazy bunch in the AWBOWhut group, unfortunately membership is purely by invite and the mogul is fortunate enough to catch a lot of insight from some of the vets in there.

TIP OFF: The first half of the NBA season has been nothing short of a soapie; with Iverson headlining it by taking a leave of absence and then retiring and then returning to Philly. Gilbert Arenas and his gun issues has been somewhat disappointing for some of us who were looking forward to seeing him play after a long lay off due to injury. But the drama off court is nothing compared to some of the heroics displayed by some veterans and young superstars on the hardwood. Guys such as Zach Randolph, David Lee, Monta Ellis, Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose, Aaron Brooks and a few others have done a great job in keeping their teams in a great light. Certain names still remain prime while others are moving into the right direction, we cannot deny the growth of Kevin Durant. I remember watching him play at Texas and 2 games that come to mind are when he played against Texas A&M and another against Oklahoma State; it was clear from then that this is a future scoring champion in the league. He didn’t get the NCAA championship, but the player of the year accolade was much deserved.

I’m certain that it didn’t come as no surprise when DWade was handpicked by Mike to be part of the Jordan family; I’m looking forward to see him launch the Jordan 25 during All Star weekend. He’s had his ups and downs this season, but I still maintain that this season is his best chance to get the MVP award. Somebody else that I’m forecasting for the MVP award is Carmelo. He is currently the league’s scoring leader and even though his season has been plagued by injury, I think his return is gong to motivate his team further as they just beat my Lakers behind an inspired game by Chauncey Billups. Joe Johnson and the Hawks have had a great season, carrying some good momentum from last year’s playoff run. Ask the Celtics, things ain’t easy in Atlanta no more, the pack 1 of the leagues more entertaining attacks and it’s great to see Jamal Crawford embracing his role and looking like the 6th man of the year. I was disappointed to see Hedo leave Orlando, but I think that the Magic are still looking good enough to have a good run well into the playoffs.

A lot of people had anticipated a great final last year between the Lakers and the Cavaliers; some Magic happened and the Cavs vanished somewhere on the way. While some people are still talking about why Lebron turned his back and didn’t shake anybody’s hand, young man is back and looking much more lethal. Apart from their signings in the off-season, you cannot deny that nobody can match up to his size, play and athleticism on court. The Cavs currently own the best record and a winning streak of 13 games going into the break. Meanwhile, my boy Kobe is currently nursing a broken finger and a sprained ankle; to a lot of people surprise, the Lakers just pulled 2 great wins behind the inspired play of Pau Gasol and Lamar kardashian. I’m very sad to see Kobe missing the All Star game, but I think that this is a well deserved break for him. I know that his and Bynum’s return is going to charge the team to a repeat.

MAIN COURSE: It’s All Star Weekend. I got my pvr almost ready; I have to delete a couple of old games to make way for the festivities. Its already confirmed that Allen Iverson (not like I’m surprised) and Kobe Bryant won’t be playing, so we know that the East is going to Win. The main part that we have to guess is who will take the MVP honors; will it be LeBron, to increase his tally, or DWade in honor of the Jordan XXV, or might anybody else just come in and sneak past them? Kevin Durant set a points record in last year’s rookie challenge. Can Brandon Jennings come in and kill the assists record? Will Tyreke Evans steal the show like he did back in High School’s McDonalds All American? I hope that Derrick Rose heals and is able to play, it would be interesting to see him go against Tyreke for bragging rights as the better Memphis Tigers Alum. I’m looking forward to see Shannon Brown in the dunk contest, if you’ve seen him play in college; you know that he packs some crazy hops. I know Gerald Wallace can up, lets see what he’s got for the contest. I feel sorry for the guys whose wives and girlfriends have already been complaining about? this basketball of yours?, if you gonna book a romantic get away for 2, please make sure that the resort has ESPN. Either that or have my number with you for updates.

DESSERT: I think that the secret to the Nets turnaround is if they quickly bid for Maya Moore of the lady Huskies. She’s already led the UConn ladies to a win streak of 63 games. Perhaps she can turn their Ls to Ws, or maybe increase the attendance. CONGRATULATIONS to the New Orleans Saints for winning the Superbowl, certain people are still not talking to me because I WAS RIGHT.

You already know who it is.

Get Familiar, It’s your Boi

ST ALBAN’S first team recorded their second victory on the trot and third win of the season when they slugged it out against St Benedict’s in the Johannesburg League match at the weekend.

After trailing most of the game in the first three quarters St Alban’s rallied back in a strong fourth quarter finish to win what was a closely contested encounter 41-37.

In the first quarter St Alban’s looked more like the visiting team as St Benedicts imposed themselves on the host schools court. It was no surprise at the end of the quarter that the visitors finished the strongest with an 11-4 lead.In the second quarter St Albans tightened up defence as they looked to close in on the seven point deficit. Forward Letlogonolo Moatshe was leading scorer with five points, but while they did create good scoring opportunities the St Albans failed to finish them off. St Benedicts struggled to keep the momentum of the opening quarter which resulted in their coach replacing his starting five with another, but the new look side seemed to lack ideas on how to penetrate homeside’ s defence. Although the visitors still finished in the quarter in the lead with a 17-16 lead; St Alban’s finished the stronger side scoring 12 points to the six scored by the visitors.

The hosts looked like they would take control of the game in the third quarter when they led 18 – 17, but St Benedict’s quickly regained the initiative by scoring two quick baskets to make it 21-18.The visitors scored 11 more points, but St Alban’s kept within touching distance of St Benedict’s lead, with Moatshe scoring four points and guard Joseph Mosata also contributing with a three pointer. The Johannesburg school finished the quarter with a four point lead with the score at 31-27.

The last stanza was a thrilling finale, with St Albans looking to reassert their authority on their home court. St Alban’s went for a full court press to halt the visitor’s on offence, a ploy that worked as the visitors succumbed to the host strong defensive play as they scored six points in the quarter. St Alban’s began to claw their way back into the game and another four points by Moatshe, who finished the game with 12 point – two of which were decisive free throws to tie the game 33-33, while a three pointer from the host’s captain Bame Nkate sealed the encounter for the homeside. Khuliso Ramashiya’s late two points in the game were the icing on the cake for St Alban’s.

NEW YORK, Jan. 13, 2010 – Amadou Gallo Fall is joining the NBA on January 25 to serve as Vice President of Development for the NBA in Africa it was announced today by Heidi Ueberroth, President, NBA International.

Fall will be responsible for leading the NBA’s efforts to help grow the game and participation in Africa working with the local federations and basketball entities. He will oversee the NBA’s grassroots events and its partnerships with marketing, media and consumer products companies. Fall will start in the NBA’s New York office and then relocate to Johannesburg, South Africa this spring.

Fall previously worked for the Dallas Mavericks as Director of Player Personnel and Vice President of International Affairs. Fall served as the team’s goodwill ambassador internationally and oversaw their scouting assignments. For the past five years, Fall has traveled to Africa as an integral part of the NBA’s Basketball without Borders program, the NBA and FIBA’s global elite basketball development program that also uses the sport to create positive social change in the areas of education, health and wellness. Prior to his 12 years with the Mavericks, the Senegal native worked for the Senegalese Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Senegalese Basketball Federation. The national team he assembled won the 1997 African Championship and participated in the 1998 World Championships in Greece.

“We’re pleased to have Amadou join the NBA and expect him to be a valuable contributor to the league’s international growth,” said Ueberroth. “Amadou’s deep knowledge of basketball in Africa coupled with his 12 years of NBA experience provides a unique combination that will further develop the sport and our business in the region.”

Fall is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of the District of Columbia where he played center on the basketball team.
