Featured: Maharaja: The Splendor of India's Royal Court

Maharaja: The Splendor of India's Royal Court is organized in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
The word maharaja (literally "great king") conjures up images of spectacle. The heyday of the maharajas began in earnest after the collapse of the Mughal empire in the early eighteenth century. The exhibition opens with this period of chaos and adventure and closes with the end of British rule in 1947, when the Indian princes' territories were incorporated into the modern states of India and Pakistan.
The show will explore the extraordinary culture of princely India, showcasing rich and varied objects that reflect different aspects of royal life. On display will be both Indian and Western works, featuring paintings, photography, textiles and dress, jewelry, jeweled objects, metalwork and furniture.
These sensational works will be explored within a broader historical context of princely life and ideals, patronage, court culture, and alliances. The Asian Art Museum is the first U.S. venue for this exhibition.
When: On NOW and until April 8, 2012Where: Asian Art Museum, CA

Featured: Painting the Modern in India

Painting the Modern in India features seven renowned painters who came of age during the height of the movement to free India from British rule. To liberate themselves from a position at the margins of an art world shaped by the colonial establishment, they organized path-breaking associations - the Calcutta Artists Group in 1943, the Progressive Artists Group in 1947 Bombay, and the Delhi Shilpi Chakra in 1949. They pioneered new approaches to painting, repositioning their own art practices internationally and in relation to the 5,000-year history of art in India. These artists created hybrid styles that are an under-appreciated yet essential component of the broad sweep of art in the 20th century. After independence in 1947, they took advantage of new opportunities in art centers around the world, especially Paris, London and New York, intensifying their quests for what the Bombay Progressives termed "aesthetic order, plastic coordination and color composition."
At the same time, they looked deeply into their own artistic heritage, learning from the first exhibition of Indian art in 1948 at Raj Bhavan in Delhi and taking inspiration from ancient sites like the old city in Benaras and the temples at Khajuraho.
The works on view are drawn from the Peabody Essex Museum's Chester and Davida Herwitz Collection, the most important holding of 20th-century art from India in this country, and The Tina and Anil Ambani Collection, one of India's leading private collections.
Support provided by the East India Marine Associates (EIMA) of the Peabody Essex Museum.

Featured: Fourth Eye Gallery presents the Canadian debut of Bajrang Lal Suthar

Fourth Eye Gallery proudly presents the Canadian debut of Bajrang Lal Suthar. This is the inaugural exhibition for the gallery, which aims to promote a wider understanding of contemporary South Asian art within and outside Canada.
The exhibit consists of twenty five mixed-media paintings, a majority of which are water colour and poster paint on cardstock. The pieces chosen span the beginning of his career to the present. Each painting is painstakingly rendered in the South Asian miniature style.
About Bajrang Lal Suthar
Born in Rajasthan, India, Bajrang found himself striving against limitations after suffering physical injury at the age of eighteen, rendering him paraplegic from neck below. Challenged to reconsider every facet of his life, from his identity to his physical capabilities, Bajrang commenced an exploration of the ways in which he could continue to engage the world and express himself within it. With remaining mobility in two fingers on his left hand, he evolved a skill for painting, finding new means to roam and experience the world imaginatively. Click HERE to learn more about Bajrang.

Featured: Film Screeening: Ekk Dewanna Tha

Sachin is a regular guy, a 22-year-old engineering graduate from a middle class family in Mumbai who is in love with the world of cinema. As a struggler in the film industry - where his long days are filled with waiting and then some more waiting, surviving on his father's pocket money and desperately trying to make an entry into any of the main film camps - there is nothing that makes each day worth looking forward to. And that's when he sees Jessie, and it is love at first sight for him.
Jessie is beautiful, elegant, smart and classy. But Jessie is not that simple. Jessie belongs to an orthodox Malayali Christian family where watching movies, partying or falling in love are completely taboo. While Sachin battles with the idea of someone like Jessie and her family living in 21st century modern Mumbai, he finds himself increasingly drawn to her. Jessie, for her part, tries to forge a friendship between them believing that cloaking their feelings under the umbrella of friendship would save them heartache, tears and a full blown family drama. Ekk Deewana Tha is the intense, yet feel good love story of these 2 very different characters as they understand the pangs and pleasure of first love while battling with the situations that life has placed them in making Sachin question all the time - Of all the people in the world why did I fall in love with Jessie?

Featured: Film Screening: Jodi Breakers

Jodi Breakers is a cheeky entertainer which takes a peek-a-boo into dysfunctional romantic relationships that eventually lead to breakups. Pairing the vivacious and exciting actors – Madhavan and Bipasha together for the first time, the film also stars Milind Soman and Deepanita Sharma along with the ever roguish Omi Vaidya and ever-charming Helen. The film has been shot in the scenic locales of Greece and Goa along with a considerable chunk on sets in Mumbai. Sid (R. Madhavan) is a break up specialist, helping wronged parties out of bad relationships. He guarantees a quick ( and not cumbersome), final freedom to his clients. A chance encounter with the sharp Sonali (Bipasha Basu ) takes his 'business' to new levels. Both embark on a journey taking them through outrageous, hilarious cases that they solve with some wit and some vile 'till love happens. Unexpected twists and turns in a case, however, turn their world upside down.
