It is November, springtime is here, and the city of Buenos Aires is full of lavender clouds of jacaranda trees in bloom. They are all over the city, making this time of the year a special one to admire these beautiful trees.

The first specimen of jacarandá, a tree original from the North-west of Argentina, was planted in Buenos Aires in 1875 with the inauguration of the 3 de Febrero Park, and it was then spread all over the city for its ornamental value in the different plantation programs. Some of the most beautiful specimens can be admired in Plaza San Martin, the Botanical Garden, along Avenida Figueroa Alcorta, Plaza Italia, Plaza Alemania.

Those of you who visit Buenos Aires in November will be lucky to witness this beautiful natural spectacle, and for those who can´t visit, here are some of my pictures:

The exhibition Carlos Thays, un jardinero francés en Buenos Aires
(Charles Thays, a French Gardener in Buenos Aires), organized by the
Buenos Aires government, the French Embassy, the City of Paris, will be held at Centro Cultural Recoleta until December 6, 2009, with free
entrance, featuring photographs, models, plans, urban furniture,
personal objects and other documents.

Charles Thays was one of
the main promoters of the embellishment of urban spaces for the
centenary in 1910, and one of the key figures for the protection of the
natural patrimony, the production of yerba mate, and the botanical
sciences.

Charles Thays was born in Paris in 1849, and died in
Buenos Aires in 1934. He was known as the Greatest Gardener of Buenos
Aires. He developed his work in Argentina from 1889, adopting it as his
own country, studying its natural and cultural heritage.

As Director of Parks of the city of Buenos Aires, Thays designed and remodeled
most of its green spaces: the Botanical Garden, the Parks 3 de Febrero,
Los Andes, Ameghino, Colón, de los Patricios, Chacabuco, Pereyra, del
Centenario, Lezama, Avellaneda and Intendente Alvear, as well as the
squares of Congreso, de Mayo, Rodríguez Peña, Solís, Castelli, Brown,
Balcarce, among others. He also built gardens in hospitals and other
public buildings, and planted over 150,000 trees in the streets of
Buenos Aires.

The exhibition is divided into different sections:

One life, two continents: explains the private and public life of Thays in two countries: France and Argentina.

The art of the garden: shows his main public and private designs
(squares, parks, and gardens; urbanizations; estancias and residences).

Science and technics: focused in his activities related to botanics, environment and horticulture.

Children's corner: specially design for kids, introducing them in the parks of the past.

Virtual walks, a video installation that takes visitors to the parks of Paris and Buenos Aires

Arteclásica is the classic Art Fair in Buenos Aires for experts and amateurs alike, which offers a plural space for our visual arts of international renown. The Fair will also hold many of its already traditional institutional programs such as Meeting Cultures, Landmark Instalation and the Ñ Space for Great Contemporary Masters.

Grupo Clarin, through its Revista Ñ, presents every year a special exhibition of the works of one of the great and outstanding Argentine artists in the intermediate generation. The artist invited for the 2009 edition is Luis Wells.

Program Meeting Cultures: Japan
The program Meeting Cultures, especially created by Arteclásica in 2006, introduces in our market artists coming from different cultures, whose work is practically unknown in our latitudes. This is a unique project and a great opportunity to approach both different aesthetics and new symbolisms.
Just as in 2006 with the Arab world, in 2007 with the Post-Soviet world, in 2008 with Western Africa, mainly from the Republic of Nigeria, this year ARTECLASICA brings us the art of today's Japan with a selection made by curator Yasuo Kitai, director of the Gallery Kitai from Tokyo. This program has the sponsorship of the Japanese Embassy in Argentina.

The auditorium of Arteclásica 2009 will host every day important conferences, round tables, talks, seminars and book presentations.

Dates and Opening times: November 2nd - 7th, 2009. 1 pm to 9 pm
