The vehicle will retail for $22,695 including destination charge and will also be eligible for a $1,300 tax credit from the federal government for 2007 tax returns.

Saturn Aura Green Line

For comparison, the Honda Civic Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid, Toyota Prius and Toyota Camry Hybrid are priced from $22,985, $25,015, $22,975 and $26,820 respectively, including destination charge.
The 2007 Aura Green Line is considered to be a "mild hybrid" since it cannot move forward under electric power alone. The Aura Green Line hybrid powertrain (164HP 2.4 liter 4-cylinder plus electric motor/generator) is capable of providing mild electric assistance under acceleration, stopping the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and starting it back up again when the gas is pressed. The car also takes advantage of regenerative braking to help recharge the battery pack.
The Aura Green Line boasts EPA ratings of 28MPG/35MPG city/highway compared to 20/30 for an Aura with the 224HP 3.5 liter V6 and 20/28 for the Aura with the 252HP 3.6 liter V6.
A more viable comparison may be with the Pontiac G6 base sedan. This vehicle is the Saturn Aura's platform-mate and also uses the 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine and transmission without the hybrid add-ons. EPA ratings for the G6 are 23/33 city/highway which means that the Aura Green Line’s hybrid system affords the driver an additional 5MPG in the city and 2MPG on the highway.
(c) www.dailytech.com

Univ.Car Tags: Saturn Aura Green Line, Hybrid, Honda Civic, Nissan Altima Hybrid, Mild Hybrid

GM brings hybrid technology to a larger class of vehicles

While most manufacturers efforts with hybrid vehicles have been limited to compact or mid-sized cars, there have been production hybrid vehicles available in larger packages. Ford has the Escape Hybrid, while GM has the Saturn Vue Green Line. For those looking for an even larger vehicle, Toyota offers the mid-sized Highlander Hybrid crossover complete with third-row seating.

GMC Yukon Hybrid

General Motors is taking its new dual-mode hybrid technology to an even larger class of vehicle: full-size SUVs. GM will make its new hybrid system available on the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs in 2008.
GM is currently gearing up for pilot production of its hybrid SUVs at its Arlington plant. These pilot runs will give GM a chance to work out any kinks before regular production takes place in the summer.
"We'll do a block of 12 [vehicles] starting at 6 a.m. on Tuesday," said Arlington plant manager John Dansby. "We'll have them spaced out over two days. We'll do a few during the day and some at night so both shifts get a chance to work on them."
The dual-mode hybrid Tahoe and Yukon are estimated to get a 25% boost in fuel economy over their traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts. That would put their fuel economy at roughly 20/25 city/highway.
GM expects the price premium for the dual-mode system to be in the $2,000 to $5,000 price range. Given that the average transaction price for a Chevrolet Tahoe is already over $42,000, an extra few thousand bucks might be worth it to customers looking for a few extra MPG.
(c) www.dailytech.com

Univ.Car Tags: General Motors, GM, SUV, Tahoe, Chevrolet, Hybrid

Super-sleek Giugiaro concept has a hydrogen heart

We’ve already seen that just because a car is economical, it doesn’t have to be boring; now the super-green lobby have a pin-up, in the shape of Giugiaro’s Vadhò. The aerodynamic body-shell is built on a one-off chassis, sitting two passengers in tandem in a fighter-jet styled cockpit that could be sited on either the left or right side depending on which country the car was built for.

But the really clever stuff is underneath the shell: a hydrogen powerplant, riding alongside the cockpit. Control is similarly aircraft themed, with no mechanical linkages between the two driver joysticks, instead being a fly(or drive)-by-wire system.
Don’t expect to see the Vadhò in a showroom near you; aside from the fact that Giugiaro doesn’t actually build cars, just design them, this is definitely a concept.
(c) www.slashgear.com

SHO Time! Taurus SHO should return to lineup, too

I've never been one to hide my unabashed appreciation for the Ford Taurus SHO (the first generation in particular, as they got progressively worse with each gen IMHO). Readers got a total kick out of the Ford Taurus Heritage Edition we showed you a week ago, and we think it's time Ford also consider bringing back the Super High Output. Fortunately, we were pointed to another Photochop artist that already took digital pen to paper and dreamed up what such a car might look like.
The rendering, posted by BlackManta on the CarSpyShots.net forum, is actually more ingenious than its first impression might suggest. BlackManta grafted the face of the Taurus X, previously known as the Freestyle, onto the Taurus to create a look that's more aggressive and interesting than the standard Taurus front end. The car's C-pillar has also been enlarged, which reduces the amount of harmful greenhouse glass (tee hee) and kind of reminds us of the now defunct Mercury Marauder, kind of.
We're having fun imagining the mechanicals, too. BlackManta would like to see the Yamaha-sourced 4.4L V8 used that currently powers the Volvo XC90 since it's roots can be traced back to the 3.4L V8 used in the third-gen Taurus SHO. That engine was a blight on the SHO's legacy, though, and we believe a proper tribute would be a 300-hp version of the new 3.5L V6 paired with the new six-speed auto and all-wheel drive. To be true to the legacy, a six-speed manual version would be even better. The mind reels at the thought.

(c) www.autoblog.com

2007 350Z Pricing Announced

by Frank Filipponio

Click the image for our full, hi-res gallery.
Although the car has been on sale since January 5th, we just got word of pricing (and pics) on Nissan's 2007 350Z lineup. One of the best sports cars on the market since it was introduced a few years ago, the refreshed '07s get even better with a newer 306hp version of Nissan's much-lauded 3.5-liter V6, as well as an updated nose, Bluetooth phone compatibility with steering wheel controls and a few new control choices. All that for just an extra $250 over the 2006 models. The only model that goes up in price more is the Roadster Enthusiast model, which finally gets the front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags which are now standard on all Zs. That model will be $500 more than a comparable 2006 version. Still a bargain in our book.
The 350Z is now available in your choice of four coupes or three roadsters. The full rundown of prices is as follows:

350Z 6MT ($27,900)
350Z Enthusiast ($29,600-6MT, $30,600-A/T)
350Z Touring ($32,700-6MT, $33,200-A/T)
350Z Grand Touring ($36,100-6MT, $37,100-A/T)
350Z Roadster Enthusiast ($35,550-6MT, $36,550-A/T)
350Z Roadster Touring ($37,900-6MT, $38,900-A/T)
350Z Roadster Grand Touring ($40,250-6MT, $41,250-A/T)

PRESS RELEASE
Nissan Announces Pricing on Revised 2007 350Z [Jan. 9, 07]
NASHVILLE (Jan. 9, 2007) – Nissan North America, Inc. today announced the availability and pricing of the revised 2007 Nissan 350Z and Nissan 350Z Roadster. Both feature a number of enhancements – highlighted by a new, more powerful, next-generation 3.5-liter V6 engine and a new front end appearance. In addition, 350Z Coupe Touring and Grand Touring models receive standard Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone System with steering wheel-mounted controls.
The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2007 Nissan 350Z increases only $250 from 2006 on all models except the 350Z Roadster Enthusiast model, which increases $500 and includes front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags that are now standard on all Z Roadsters. The 2007 350Z went on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide on January 5, 2007.
"The Nissan Z has built a tradition of exciting performance and outstanding value for 37 years now," said Bill Bosley, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. "This newest iteration, with its more powerful VQ-series V6, epitomizes the innovation and continuous improvement that has defined the Z's success since its introduction in 1970."
The new engine, which features nearly 80% redesigned major parts (except bolt, O-rings and clips), is rated at 306 horsepower* and 268 lb-ft of torque with both the close-ratio 6-speed manual and 5-speed automatic transmissions.
The engine is part of Nissan's VQ-series that has been on Ward's "10 Best Engines" list for 13 consecutive years. The Z's hood has been redesigned to accommodate the new dual intake system and to reflect the 2007 models' more aggressive and sporty personality. Other refinements for 2007 include three new exterior colors – Solar Orange, San Marino Blue and Carbon Silver – and Roadster models receive a new optional gray convertible top (replaces the previous blue convertible top; a black top remains as standard).
All 350Zs continue to offer standard Nissan Advance Air Bag System with dual-stage front supplemental air bags, Zone Body construction with front and rear crushable zones and Active Head Restraints (except with Burnt Orange net seats). The Z has also earned NHTSA's 5-star rating for side-impact crash test safety**.
Pricing and Model Availability
For 2007, the Nissan 350Z Coupe is available in four models – 350Z 6MT, 350Z Enthusiast, 350Z Touring and 350Z Grand Touring.
Starting MSRP for the 350Z Coupe with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission is $27,900. Designed to emphasize the "sport" in sport-utility vehicle, the original decision to build the Cayenne was greeted with plenty of skepticism and more than a little derision, but it has proved a very strong part of the German marque's lineup, boasted Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking, during a Monday preview at the Detroit Auto Show. "It was patently dismissed, but it's now patently loved," said the executive.
The new version boasts significant revisions to the exterior designed to smooth out some of the more criticized design features. That includes more widely-set headlights, as well as the addition of a new LED light bar, mounted in the grille below the main lamps. That will become a standard feature on future Porsche products, company officials noted during the unveiling, at the North American International Auto Show. The rear spoiler on the Cayenne Turbo has been lengthened for further aerodynamic stability, and new, rear LED taillights have been added. The subtle changes reduce Cayenne's wind drag markedly.
The Cayenne's various powertrains have been redesigned, the V-6 now delivering 290 horsepower, a more than 15 percent increase. The Turbo model now makes 500 horsepower, and can launch from 0-60 in just 4.9 seconds, as a longer feature on TheCarConnection.com reveals. Even with the improvement in performance, the various versions of the 2008 Cayenne will get from 8 to 15 percent better fuel economy than the outgoing SUV.
And to keep all that power firmly planted, the German maker has redesigned its stability control system. The Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control can keep the cabin perfectly upright through reasonably aggressive turns, generating up to 0.65 Gs.
Even Porsche wasn't sure what to expect when it launched the Cayenne, four years ago, but Wiedeking noted that sales have been running roughly 40,000 annually, or double the initial company forecast. Significantly, the sporty ute has become one of Porsche's big sellers in emerging markets, such as China and Russia, where sales have surged by double and triple digits in recent years. "We could not have done that with (Porsche's classic) sports cars," observed the CEO.
(c) www.thecarconnection.com

Pure Power: The Audi Diesel Engines

DETROIT, Mich. - An output of 500 bhp and 738 ft.-lbs. of torque – Audi is unveiling an engine which sets new standards in the diesel sector. The majestic V12 TDI power unit with its capacity of six litres endows the high-performance Audi Q7 SUV with sports car credentials. It is the harbinger of a wide-scale model initiative, as Audi seeks to make major inroads into the US market with its diesel models – courtesy of a new emission control technology which cuts emissions drastically.
The Audi Q7 V12 TDI raises the bar in the burgeoning sports utility vehicle segment. A time of just 5.5 seconds for the dash from zero to 100 km/h and an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h give the high-performance SUV sports car calibre. Its six-litre twelve-cylinder diesel unit demonstrates the tremendous technological expertise at Audi's fingertips. 18 years after the Ingolstadt brand invented the modern-day TDI engine, it is presenting it in an all-new high-tech, range-topping guise.

Audi makes the vital breakthroughs
All of the diesel engines from Audi deserve the tag of 'sporty' on account of their impressive performance – the six and eight-cylinder 2.7 TDI, 3.0 TDI and 4.2 TDI units serve to underline this. The pioneering role that Audi assumes in the field of diesel technology stems from the peerless expertise it has amassed over recent decades. Audi engineers have been responsible for one vital breakthrough after another – the most important of these was the world's first ever TDI engine to be fitted in a passenger car, which Audi introduced in 1989.
Last year, Audi demonstrated the dynamic potential of diesel power in most memorable fashion on race tracks around the world. The V12 TDI in the R10 sports prototype unleashed in excess of 650 bhp and left its petrol-engined competitors in its wake in each of the eight races it competed in. Highlights of this winning streak included its triumph at the gruelling Le Mans 24 Hours as well as its victories in the LMP1 category of the American Le Mans Series.
The trend towards diesel engines is gathering strength all the time in the United States too. Audi is firmly convinced that the TDI engine represents the powerful and economical alternative for the future of motoring, and is therefore preparing a model drive to bolster this trend. The Q7 3.0 TDI is expected to hit showrooms in the USA in late 2008. Thanks to the exceptionally low emissions resulting from its cutting-edge Bluetec technology, this engine even complies with the US Tier II Bin 5 standard which places extremely tough demands on nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions.

SCR catalytic converter for reducing nitrogen oxide levels
At the core of the Bluetec technology is a catalytic converter known by the abbreviation of SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction). The second system component takes the form of an auxiliary tank which contains a carbonyl diamide solution. The solution is injected in small doses into the exhaust system where it decomposes into ammonia, which then breaks down the nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water. The arrival of the ultra-clean Bluetec diesel engines will see Audi hold true to its tradition of always being at the very forefront of diesel technology.
(c) www.fourtitude.com

Your armrest is sooo 20th century

by Scott Davis

Johnson Controls has introduced a very unique looking idea for center armrest/consoles. It increases capacity over conventional floor consoles by 30- to 150-percent and can house such items as navigation, infotainment and security systems. It also includes a rear sliding storage drawer for occupants confined to the back seat, as well as additional storage in the lid.
As interior space requirements continue to increase, ideas like these will become more important to designers seeking to create unique solutions to storage issues. The guys at Johnson Controls are never short on cool ideas, and this one should be ready for integration in car interiors by 2010. The ongoing challenge will be getting the often conservative manufacturers to open their minds to these forward-thinking ideas.
(c) www.autoblog.com

Lexus Shows Racy Side with LF-A, IS-F

by Bengt Halvorson

2008 Lexus IS-F
AtDetroit, Lexus introduced a new sporting line, indicated simply by the letter 'F'. According to Lexus Group VP Bob Carter, the designation is derived from the internal coding of 'Circle F', or 'F1', which signaled the development of the first LS. Since then, the 'F' has signified unique vehicles in the company's development system. Both models that the brand rolled out on its stand carry the designation.
The first production vehicle in the 'F' line - expected at dealerships as soon as December of this year - is the IS-F. Described as not just an IS500 but an IS completely re-engineered with high-performance in mind, the IS-F is edgier than anything that Lexus would have released in its main model line.
There's a 400-hp, 5.0-liter V-8 underhood, mated to a specially calibrated eight-speed automatic transmission that allows full torque converter lockup in second through eighth gear. The transmission also has precise throttle blips when a downshift is commanded. Lexus anticipates a 0-60 time of less than 4.9 seconds.
To make the power more usable, and more fun, the IS-F employs a new three-mode version of the automaker's VDIM stability control system-one that's normal/safe, one that allows a little more sliding, and another that allows it to remain off.
The IS-F gets a host of improvements aimed at customers who really do intend to take their vehicle to the track. Sticky sport rubber is used, a scavenging oil pump makes sure that the special cylinder heads are protected during high-performance, high-G driving, and engine oil and transmission fluid coolers are included.
Big Brembo brakes (six-piston in front) are standard, matched with a high-friction surface, and custom-designed, 19-inch forged alloy wheels complete the package. Besides the 'F' badging, there are other hints to indicate the added power, including a dual exhaust with quad tailpipes, wider front fenders, a larger hood, and a larger grille and rear spoiler. Distinctive sport seats are exclusive to the IS-F.
And exactly how exclusive will the IS-F be? Quite so, if you can look beyond the similarities to the lesser IS. Deborah Meyer, Lexus VP of marketing, said that the 'F' line is specifically targeted for enthusiasts. "We won't expect a lot of volume out of this," she said.
Toyota also unveiled a completely new take on the LF-A concept that created a buzz at Detroit two years ago. This "next evolution" of the concept is a true supercar, with a high-revving, 500-hp V-10 mounted mid-ship and a top speed of around 200 mph. The new concept is much more likely to move toward production, according to Lexus, and engineers have already done some on-road and on-track engineering analysis. Carter said that Lexus is currently gauging consumer interest in it, and hinted that production is a possibility.
When Lexus originally unveiled the LF-A concept two years ago, there was much talk about creating a "brand within a brand" similar to the 'F' brand, except with hybrids. But a decision was apparently made soon after that not to go that route, probably because a green performance line might have a confused (or conflicted) image to overcome. Hybrids aren't completely out of the high-performance scene for Lexus, though; the 'F' brand "eventually could evolve in the long-term future to have hybrids," added Carter.
Some observers still expected the LF-A to bow with an exotic, high-power hybrid powertrain. Instead, that would be the Toyota FT-HS, which also incorporated the letter 'F' and seemed to confuse even the representatives working the Lexus stand, who told us where "the hybrid sports car" would be. The edgy FT-HS, with a 400-hp performance hybrid system, may end up being the long-awaited replacement for the Supra.
(c) www.thecarconnection.com

Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Subaru Legacy and Outback

by Noah Joseph

Click on either image to view our high-res gallery of the Legacy 3.0 R and Outback
Subaru launched the 2008 Legacy and Outback models at the Detroit show, and while it's largely business as usual for the all-wheel-drive duo, there are a few revisions that the Subie fans amongst our readership might find interesting.
After its kid brother, the Impreza, has gotten a new face time and time again, the Legacy and Outback have now gotten their turn under the knife. Sheetmetal up front is the biggest change for 2008. The Legacy gets a new, bigger, chromed-up grille; restyled bumpers front and rear with shorter overhangs; and new headlights and taillights. The Outback gets a bigger, more upright and rugged-looking grille, plus restyled fenders, restyled hood and new wheels. Stability control will be offered on more models, and a tire pressure monitoring system becomes standard. Both models also get some revised features inside.
The 2008 model year also marks the debut of the range-topping Legacy 3.0 R, transplanting the 3-liter DOHC 245-hp Flat-6 engine that's already under the hood in its Outback sister car. Paddle-shifters for the 5-speed auto are also new, and the car bobs and weaves on a Bilstein suspension setup. And while it may not have the clout of a premium German badge, the 3.0 R makes a compelling case against the usual suspects from Europe.
Follow the jump for the full press releases, and click here or on the image above for our gallery of high-resolution images from the studio and the Detroit show floor.

(c) www.autoblog.com

Infiniti Sketches Next G Coupe

2008 Infiniti G Coupe
The next Infiniti G Coupe will be shown at the New York auto show in April.
Infiniti confirmed the show date earlier this week at the Detroit auto show, but today provided this sketch to whet appetites until New York's auto show, which opens to the media on April 4.
Infiniti says the new 2008 G Coupe will be paired with a luxury crossover vehicle concept. The concept is based on the brand's rear-drive platform, not the compact Nissan Rogue crossover displayed in Detroit.
Curiously, Infiniti's latest press release - as many have done lately - omitted any numbers after the model names. Thankfully, the nice folks over at Nissan Sport have a thorough and thoughtful design analysis of the G35 coupe illustration that was released earlier today.
We'd encourage you click on over for their full breakdown, but a few elements are worthy of note.

The front bumper seems to have taken the brunt of the modifications, dispatching some of the angularity seen on the concept, while the two air intakes on the front bumper have been nixed in favor of a gaping inlet in the middle, accompanied by two smaller intakes on either side. The "katana" grille is still present, however the implausible (for the time being) door mounted cameras have been replaced with more conventional mirror units and the c-pillar's kink seems to have been smoothed out to better match the roof's plunge into the hatch.
Follow the link for a few other Nissan-obsessed writers' opinions and look for the production vehicle to, hopefully, bow sometime this year.
Thanks for the tip, Guru G!
(c) www.autoblog.com

Dubspeed Driven Road Test - 2007 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

Click for Larger Image

Story by Dubspeed Driven Associate Editor, Carl Modesette
Photos courtesy of General Motors
Arguably, no other car in American history has a legacy as rich as the Chevrolet Corvette. From humble beginnings in 1953 with a 150 horsepower inline-six engine, to today’s 505 horsepower world-assaulting Z06, the Corvette has run the full spectrum of sports car ideology. However, recent years have seen the demise of many storied nameplates, while others have been resurrected. Looking forward, can the Corvette continue to capture enthusiasts’ hearts in a performance-rich, horsepower warmonger market?

Click for Larger Image
Nearly every automotive journalist has already accurately reported on the C6 Corvette’s performance prowess. A 400 horsepower LS2 engine propels the ‘Vette to 60 mph in about four and a half seconds, and through the quarter mile in about thirteen seconds flat, if not a shade faster. With a relatively low curb weight just shy of 3300 pounds, and maximum cornering grip a hair’s breadth away from 1.0 g’s, the Corvette offers an overall performance package that few cars can compete with. The fact that it’s reasonably comfortable, gets great fuel mileage, and can swallow a weekend’s worth of luggage (or a pair of golf bags) is icing on the cake. The true strength of the Corvette, however, has traditionally been found on the window sticker. Offered at a price point significantly undercutting its cross-Atlantic rival, the Porsche 911, the ‘Vette is, and continues to be, a value among world-class sports cars.

Click for Larger Image
New to the 6th generation Corvette is the 6-speed Paddle Shift automatic transmission, which we recently had the opportunity to sample. Representing nearly 2/3 of overall Corvette sales (growing to nearly 3/4 excluding the Z06), the automatic transmission is fundamental to the success of the Corvette. This new gearbox adds two cogs to the outgoing C5’s aged 4-speed unit, making better use of the LS2’s torque curve, and at the same time adds a pair of shift paddles to the steering wheel. Rather unconventional in their operation, these paddles are mirror images of one another – pull either one with your forefingers to downshift, and push the top of either one with your thumb to upshift. Typically, these shifter paddles are independent – one for upshifts, the other for downshifts. Seemingly great in theory, these paddles are a bit cumbersome in practice. The small size of the thumb-operated “+” buttons make them difficult to locate quickly, and essentially force the hands into a 9-and-3 position. In addition, pushing forward to upshift is counterintuitive, if not awkward whilst being propelled forward by those 400 horsepower at wide open throttle. The immediacy of shifts commanded by the paddles is also a bit disappointing - one must plan ahead to achieve shifts at the desired instant. Thankfully, use of the paddles is optional, as this slushbox offers both standard and Sport Drive modes. Adaptive electronics are employed to soften shifts under normal acceleration, and stiffen them up under hard acceleration. Performance in the Sport Drive mode should satisfy any “enthusiast” demanding an automatic transmission in the first place, relegating the paddle shifters largely to the realm of conversation material on the way to the golf course.

Click for Larger Image
Despite this author’s quibbles over the new Paddle Shift transmission, make no mistake – the C6 Corvette is still a phenomenal performance automobile. It’s rare to see a successful marriage of performance, comfort, and practicality – much less with the relative economy and value that the Corvette offers. 27 miles per gallon on the highway from a V-8 making 400 horsepower doesn’t happen every day. This is an attainable driver’s car that can actually be driven daily.

Click for Larger Image
And yet, there are other dimensions to the Corvette that most fail to comment on, dimensions easily overlooked when overwhelmed by the knowledge that such performance can be had at so relatively low a price. Those dimensions are quality, longevity, and staying power. It’s tough to argue the numbers: in 2005, the C6 Corvette’s introductory year, sales grew nearly 10% over the C5’s final year of production. 2006 sales should show even stronger gains, with the addition of the aforementioned 6-speed automatic transmission and the fire-breathing Z06 model. But will this trend continue?

Click for Larger Image
Undeniably, Chevrolet has gone to great lengths to ensure that the Corvette can compete with the Porsche 911 on paper, leveraging their tradition of powertrain prowess. Lay their respective spec sheets side by side and dare someone not to choose the Corvette, when price plays into the decision. However remove price as an object, and the decision becomes tougher. Quite frankly, the Corvette can’t compete with the 911, much less many other cars both foreign and domestic, when it comes to judging overall quality. While the look and feel of interior materials have improved in the C6 iteration, the overall package still looks – and feels – just like any other pedestrian Chevrolet. It’s a bit disheartening to climb inside the Corvette and find a standard-issue Chevy Malibu steering wheel staring you in the face. Shut the driver’s door and begin to get comfortable, and you’ll notice that the center stack housing the audio and climate controls will flex alarmingly when you rest your knee against it. Scan around the interior and you’ll notice that the textured aluminum trim on the door-release buttons and shifter knob doesn’t match the painted silver trim on the center stack, dash, and steering wheel. That’s a lot to stomach from a car whose sticker starts upwards of 40-large, no matter how fast it might be. While driving, there also remains a difficult to quantify rough-around-the edges feel that’s absent in a Porsche, much less other cars in the same price range as the Corvette – in fact, some cars costing half as much as a Corvette exhibit better overall quality and feel.

Click for Larger Image
So what is it about the Corvette that makes it so popular? It’d be easy to dismiss it as value advantage, but in this writer’s humble opinion, that doesn’t fully capture the essence of the Corvette’s appeal. The demographics of Corvette buyers are what one would expect: predominantly middle-aged males with a median income of around $150K (about the same demographics as the 911, except triple the salary). No surprises here, really. Yet consider the historical significance of such buyers – these are people who were in their teens during the 1960’s and early 1970’s. This was the era of the musclecar, when horsepower was king and the Corvette was that upper-echelon car that everyone dreamed about, but few could afford. Back then, the European sports cars were far rarer and Japanese sports cars had yet to enter the scene. Fast forward to now, and those then-teenage dreamers can finally afford the car of their dreams – and it’s actually halfway practical to own one.

Click for Larger Image
But take heed Chevrolet, because the clock is ticking and Baby Boomers are aging. Backs are getting bad, and the need to fulfill visceral rushes of acceleration is waning. A new generation of buyers is coming of age and buying power - a generation who’s grown up on the quality of Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys, and the performance of highly-tuned Japanese and German sports cars. Gone are the days of the adage “there’s no replacement for displacement.” The fact that more than one automaker can reliably extract over 100 horsepower per liter from smaller displacement engines makes even the Z06’s 505 horsepower, 7.0 liter engine seem, well, rather underachieving.

Click for Larger Image
The fact is that tomorrow’s Corvette buyers will be inundated with a dizzying array of attractive alternatives, and to them, the Corvette won’t hold the same symbolic appeal, for the emissions mandates of the 70’s and 80’s weren’t so kind to performance cars. Merely competing on paper won’t be good enough; tomorrow’s Corvette will need to compete in the flesh. That is, the Corvette will need to be a paragon of quality as well as performance. If The General can raise the bar on quality (and I truly hope they will), they’ll ensure the Corvette will be around for years to come.
(c)www.speedsportlife.com

Detroit Auto Show: Nissan Rogue ready to battle in competitive small CUV field

click on the above image to view high-resolution gallery, now with 24 images

Sales of the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 were quite healthy in 2006. In fact, the RAV4 more than doubled its 2005 tally. If business is so good for two vehicles that take a rather sterile approach to dominating the small crossover utility vehicles (CUV) market, can Nissan bully its way into the game with a rogue attitude?
Making its debut at the Detroit Auto Show, the 2008 Nissan Rogue will appeal to younger buyers by offering muscular styling, a Bose sound system, dynamic suspension controls, full safety equipment and a little more interior room. The Rogue is based on Nissan's "C" platform, which also serves the Sentra.
If you're still interested, find out more about the Rogue after the jump or click here to view our high-resolution gallery stocked with 24 images.

2008 Nissan Rogue Crossover SUV Offers Bold Styling
The new 2008 Nissan Rogue, which makes its world debut at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, is designed to add a new dimension to the small crossover utility segment – satisfying both the functional needs of the buyer and their emotional needs. Rogue's aggressive, performance-oriented styling, powerful engine, responsive handling and driver-focused cockpit combine with its thoughtful everyday utility to create a vehicle that shifts the way buyers, especially younger buyers, think about small crossovers. The 2008 Nissan Rogue is scheduled to go on sale in September 2007.
"With Rogue, we've targeted drivers in their early 30s, whose responsibilities and functional needs have changed but who don't want to leave behind the person they've always been – someone who enjoys driving, who values style and design, and who wants to retain his or her individuality," said Bill Bosley, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. "The Rogue name was chosen to reflect its independence-oriented positioning, though we certainly believe that all buyers, regardless of age or life stage, will positively respond to Rogue's fun-to-drive, all-climate performance and aggressive styling."
The 2008 Nissan Rogue will be available in two models, Rogue S and Rogue SL, each with a standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, Nissan's advanced Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and 4-wheel disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).
An all-new all-wheel drive system with yaw moment control is available on both S and SL models. Rogue also offers a long list of standard safety features – including front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags and roof-mounted curtain supplemental air bags.
"As Nissan's first entry into the crowded small crossover SUV field, Rogue needs to stand out, to be an over-achiever," said Bosley. "This philosophy not only applies to Rogue's styling and performance, but also to its utility features, attention to quality and detail, and, of course, value. Rogue is the complete package."
Aggressive Design and Attitude
The Rogue's exterior is designed to present an image of modern sophistication – both aggressive and sporty. Its sleek, masculine styling includes dynamically arched forms and powerful rear shoulder lines.
"Though people buy small crossover SUVs for their utility, the designers of Rogue sought to create a vehicle that makes you first consider its power, style and sophistication, with its functionality a little more stealthy – like a high-end designer brief case or bag," said Bosley. "All the necessary compartments and storage spaces are there, they just don't scream 'utility' at you."
Rogue features available Xenon headlights, available power sliding glass sunroof with dark gray glass, and an available roof rail system with detachable cross bars (accessory).
Rogue is built on Nissan's new "C" platform, which provides high body stiffness with extensive use of high-strength steel utilized to reduce body weight. Rogue features a 105.9-inch wheelbase and 182.9-inch overall length – among the longest in class, compared with leading small crossover competitors – providing ample rear seat proportions and one of the longest interior lengths. The body also features large front door openings for easy ingress and egress.
A Driver-Oriented, Ultra-Functional Interior
Rogue's interior, like its exterior, is designed to stand out in class with its sophisticated integration of a cockpit-like driver's space and exceptional utility. The driver's seat position offers excellent visibility, enhanced by an available seat lifter with up to two inches of seat height adjustability. Rogue's instrument panel layout and steering wheel are designed for easy readability and operation while also providing a sporty look and feel, with reddish-orange illumination and silver gauge surround rings.
An available trip computer includes displays for distance-to-empty, average fuel consumption, average speed, elapsed time and outside temperature. Available steering wheel-mounted controls include audio, Bluetooth® Hands-Free Phone System and cruise control.
Leather-appointed seating surfaces and heated front seats and mirrors are also available, along with a fold-flat front passenger seat – which allows over 8.5 feet of front-to-rear cargo space for carrying long items such as wood or ladders. A rear 60/40 split-fold bench seat and oversize glove box with partition that measures over half a cubic foot in volume are standard. Also available is a highly versatile, dual-level center console storage with hidden functionality features.
Rogue's roomy cargo area has a number of available utility features, including a unique cargo organizer. When needed, the organizer pops up – with a one touch open switch – from its hidden space below the flat cargo floor. A portion of the cargo floor snaps into a vertical position, revealing a flat recessed space with removable, vertical cargo nets. The system helps prevent items such as sports equipment and grocery bags from rolling loose around the cargo area while driving.
Also available is a washable, removable tray that fits below the cargo area floor to hold wet or dirty gear and tools and a rear tonneau cover to keep luggage and other items out of sight.
Rogue's everyday utility features also include a variety of cupholders, memo/pen holder, coin holder and cell phone/sunglass holders.
"Rogue's innovative storage solutions are designed to accommodate the active daily lives of its owners," said Bosley. "Just because a vehicle is smaller on the outside doesn't mean you have to compromise storage or utility space – all it takes is innovation and creative thinking."
Among the advanced technology features available on Rogue are an Intelligent Key and a powerful Bose®-developed audio system with 7 speakers and subwoofer with MP3 capability and satellite radio. Also available is a Bluetooth® Hands-Free Phone System, HomeLink® Universal Transceiver garage door opener and Xenon headlights.
Engaging Performance
While maintaining its functionality as a family vehicle, Rogue's creators also recognized the target buyers' desires for a higher level of acceleration, handling and fun-to-drive attributes than offered by traditional small crossover SUVs. Rogue delivers on this promise with an advanced drivetrain anchored by its powerful 2.5-liter engine, 4-wheel independent suspension and refined all-wheel drive system.
"We picture the typical Rogue driver, after he drops the kids off at school, lowering the windows, turning up the Bose audio and heading up the coast or mountains – his briefcase and gear tucked securely in the back – before turning back towards the office," said Bosley. "Rogue not only makes such a scenario possible, but encourages such adventures."
Rogue's standard QR25DE 2.5-liter DOHC 16-valve inline 4-cylinder is rated at 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft torque, tuned to provide ample torque in the low-to-mid rpm range for smooth, powerful acceleration and quick initial response from a standing start.
The engine features an aluminum block, reduced piston and piston ring friction and increased thermal efficiency (over the previous generation 2.5-liter engine design), 9.6:1 compression ratio, and large diameter intake port and exhaust manifold.
Every Rogue comes with a standard Nissan Xtronic CVT™, combining smooth, linear and responsive acceleration feel with high-efficiency operation. Rogue's CVT utilizes adaptive logic control and a high-speed central processing unit. Its advanced shift control offers the optimal shift pattern according to the driving situation and driver's demands, using input from driver operation, vehicle speed, road gradient, turning condition and acceleration force to adjust shifting patterns accordingly. Available paddle shifters provide an added level of sporty performance and driver control.
Rogue is available with front-wheel drive or an advanced all-wheel drive system with yaw moment control. The system provides stable starts on dry or slippery roads and excellent all-weather performance and traction. Every Rogue also features standard Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control System (TCS).
Rogue's standard 4-wheel independent suspension provides a balance of ride comfort and driving stability. The front suspension includes subframe-mounted independent struts with coil springs, high-performance shock absorbers with rebound springs, and a stabilizer bar.
The rear independent multi-link suspension includes aluminum-alloy upper links and high-performance shock absorbers with rebound springs. The Volt draws from GM’s previous experience in starting the modern electric vehicle market when it launched the EV1 in 1996, according to GM Vice Chairman Robert A. Lutz.
“The EV1 was the benchmark in battery technology and was a tremendous achievement,” Lutz said. “Even so, electric vehicles, in general, had limitations. They had limited range, limited room for passengers or luggage, couldn’t climb a hill or run the air conditioning without depleting the battery, and had no device to get you home when the battery’s charge ran low.
“The Chevrolet Volt is a new type of electric vehicle. It addresses the range problem and has room for passengers and their stuff. You can climb a hill or turn on the air conditioning and not worry about it.”

Click for Larger Image
The Volt can be fully charged by plugging it into a 110-volt outlet for approximately six hours a day. When the lithium-ion battery is fully charged, the Volt can deliver 40 city miles of pure electric vehicle range. When the battery is depleted, a 1L, three-cylinder turbocharged engine spins at a constant speed, or revolutions per minute (rpm), to create electricity and replenish the battery. According to Lutz, this increases the fuel economy and range.
“If you lived within 30 miles from work (60 miles round trip) and charged your vehicle every night when you came home or during the day at work, you would get 150 miles per gallon,” Lutz said. “More than half of all Americans live within 20 miles of where they work (40 miles round trip). In that case, you might never burn a drop of gas during the life of the car.”
In addition, the Chevrolet Volt is designed to run on E85, a fuel blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Using E85, fuel economy of 150 mpg would translate into more than 525 miles per petroleum gallon.

Click for Larger Image
In the event a driver forgets to charge the vehicle or goes on a vacation far away, the Volt would still get 50 mpg by using the engine to convert gasoline into electricity and extending its range up to 640 miles, more than double that of today’s conventional vehicles.
A technological breakthrough required to make this concept a reality is a large lithium-ion battery. This type of electric car, which the technical community calls an “EV range-extender,” would require a battery pack that weighs nearly 400 pounds (181 kg). Some experts predict that such a battery – or a similar battery – could be production-ready by 2010 to 2012.
Jon Lauckner, GM vice president of Global Program Management, said the Volt is uniquely built to accommodate a number of advanced technology propulsion solutions that can give GM a competitive advantage.

Click for Larger Image
“Today’s vehicles were designed around mechanical propulsion systems that use petroleum as their primary source of fuel.” Lauckner said. Tomorrow’s vehicles need to be developed around a new propulsion architecture with electricity in mind. The Volt is the first vehicle designed around GM’s E-flex System.
“That’s why we are also showing a variant of the Chevrolet Volt with a hydrogen-powered fuel cell, instead of a gasoline engine EV range-extender,” said Lauckner. “Or, you might have a diesel engine driving the generator to create electricity, using bio-diesel. Finally, an engine using 100-percent ethanol might be factored into the mix. The point is, all of these alternatives are possible with the E-Flex System.”
The Volt concept car is built on a modified future architecture, Lauckner said, similar to the one GM uses for current small cars, such as the Chevrolet Cobalt and HHR.

Click for Larger Image
According to Larry Burns, GM vice president for research and development and strategic planning, the world’s growing demand for energy and its dependence on oil for transportation is the common theme behind today’s headlines.
“Whether your concern is energy security, global climate change, natural disasters, the high price of gas, the volatile pricing of a barrel of oil and the effect that unpredictability has on Wall Street – all of these issues point to a need for energy diversity,” said Burns. “Today, there are more than 800 million cars and trucks in the world. In 15 years, that will grow to 1.1 billion vehicles. We can’t continue to be 98-percent dependent on oil to meet our transportation needs. Something has to give. We think the Chevrolet Volt helps bring about the diversity that is needed. If electricity met only 10 percent of the world’s transportation needs, the impact would be huge.”

Click for Larger Image
GM’s E-flex System moves automobile toward new electric age
GM’s E-flex System enables multiple propulsion systems to fit into a common chassis, using electric drive to help the world diversify energy sources and establish electricity from the grid as one of those sources.
“The DNA of the automobile has not changed in more than 100 years,” said Burns. “Vehicles still operate in pretty much the same fashion as when Karl Benz introduced the ‘horseless carriage’ in 1886.
“While mechanical propulsion will be with us for many decades to come, GM sees a market for various forms of electric vehicles, including fuel cells and electric vehicles using gas and diesel engines to extend the range. With our new E-flex concept, we can produce electricity from gasoline, ethanol, bio-diesel or hydrogen.
“We can tailor the propulsion to meet the specific needs and infrastructure of a given market. For example, somebody in Brazil might use 100-percent ethanol (E100) to power an engine generator and battery. A customer in Shanghai might get hydrogen from the sun and create electricity in a fuel cell. Meanwhile, a customer in Sweden might use wood to create bio-diesel.”

Click for Larger Image
The Chevrolet Volt is just the first variant of the E-flex System. The Volt uses a large battery and a small, 1L turbocharged gasoline engine to produce enough electricity to go up to 640 miles and provide triple-digit fuel economy. GM will show other variations of the propulsion systems at future auto shows.
“GM is building a fuel cell variant that mirrors the propulsion system in the Chevrolet Sequel (fuel cell concept),” Burns said. “Instead of a big battery and a small engine generator used in the Volt, we would use a fuel cell propulsion system with a small battery to capture energy when the vehicle brakes. Because the Volt is so small and lightweight, we would need only about half of the hydrogen storage as the Sequel to get 300 miles of range.”
Future concepts might incorporate diesel generators, bio-diesel and E-100.

Click for Larger Image
Environmentally conscious vehicles can be aesthetically appealing
With exterior proportions associated more with classic sports cars, the Chevrolet Volt conveys an immediate message of agility and sophistication. Twenty-one-inch wheels and sheer, taut surface relationships reiterate the statement. The Volt’s athletic design challenges the notion that an environmentally conscious vehicle can’t be beautiful and possess an aesthetic spirit that matches its driving characteristics.
“We leveraged our resources around the globe to develop the design aesthetic for the Volt,” said Ed Welburn, vice president, GM Global Design. “It was important that the design capture the face of the Chevrolet as it’s recognized around the world.”
True to the heritage of its Chevrolet bowtie, the Volt’s exterior design suggests spirited performance and is wrapped in a stylish package, with classic Chevrolet performance cues that hint at both Camaro and Corvette. On the inside, near-term technologies and innovative materials combine with ingenious use of ambient light for an interior environment that’s light, airy and thoughtful.

Click for Larger Image
“First and foremost, this is an advanced technology vehicle that uses little to no fuel at all. But we didn’t see any reason why that should compromise its design,” said Anne Asensio, executive director, GM Design. Asensio led the design team that created the Volt concept, with designs solicited from GM’s studios around the world.
“We wanted a size that connected with everyone, so we designed a small car,” said Asensio. “In the end, the interior design team from England inspired the final interior execution, and the exterior is the work of the Michigan advanced design team.
“Our job was to design a vehicle people could easily imagine,” said Asensio. “It couldn’t be a ‘science project,’ because that’s not what this car is all about. It had to be realistic, executable and carry the essence of the Chevrolet brand.”
(c) www.speedsportlife.com

Detroit Auto Show: Audi announces US plans for Q7 3.0L TDI

Click image for a high-resolution photo gallery

We don't know when the Q7 V12 TDI might go on sale anywhere in the world, but Audi has stated that Americans can expect to see the Q7 with a 233 HP V6 turbodiesel sometime in mid-2008, with "other models" following afterwards.
The vehicle will be legal for sale in all 50 states due to its use of Bluetec emissions control technology, and specifically the selective catalyst reduction (SCR) system that employs AdBlue urea to control oxides of nitrogen. There are no solid numbers yet on fuel economy, but Audi claims a 20-25% improvement over standard gasoline engines. The automaker also claims that such an engine will perhaps not be as affected by the newly revised EPA fuel economy test procedure.
No word yet on pricing, and with all the factors potentially at play, we're not willing to even wager a guess at this point.

(c) www.autoblog.com

Scion tC R.S. 3.0 dropping in Detroit

Toyota announced today that the Scion tc Release Special 3.0 will be shown at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week. It means a 0-60 mph time of 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph.
Only available as a three-door model, styling cues to mark it out from lesser models include door mirrors, fog lamps surrounds and a centrally-mounted tailpipe all finished in a triangular shape. The body wears side skirts, a mesh front grille, a roof spoiler, blue brake calipers and the option of 18-inch alloys.
Inside there's shell-backed Recaro sports seats and a race-style flat-bottomed steering wheel. Drilled alloy pedals, black detailing and unique badging finish off the cabin.
The car will make its debut at March's Geneva Motor Show and go on sale immediately after. It will be badged as the Corsa VXR in the U.K. where the Vauxhall brand is used instead of Opel.
(c) www.thecarconnection.com

Audi may show Q7 V12 TDI concept in Detroit

This little number caught us off gaurd when one of our sources directed us to the VWVortex.com forums. Audi already unveiled the Q7 V12 TDI back in September at the Paris Motor Show. We were in awe of the engine that doesn't have to trace its root far back before it runs right into the same V12 diesel that powers the R10 Le Mans racer. This angelic-looking Q7 has the same V12, according to the forum poster, and it produces the same 500 horsepower and 738 ft-lbs. of glorious torque.
Perhaps Audi wanted to dress up the Q7 V12 TDI for its debut in North America, because from what we know this vehicle is Detroit-bound. There are a few changes to the vehicle that set it apart from the one we saw debut in Paris, including a front end with more LEDs around the headlights and a slightly modified lowe air intake. Out back the reverse lights have been relocated from the stop lamps into their own strip along the bumper that was previously housing reflectors. The center stop lamp housed beneath the rear spoiler is now also a string of red LEDs. The faux-diffuser in the lower bumper is slightly different, and finally the pair of exhaust tips embedded in the rear skirt are now ovular. The white paint job is new (and nice), but the wheels, oddly enough, are the same as the one's we saw in Paris.
The interior of this mild concept has also been cleaned up with the creamiest-looking leather applied to every visible surface, new gauges (220 mph!), and a new center information display that now both color and sporting a higher resolution. If you check out our gallery of high-resolution pics, you'll notice the center information display is showing a g-meter.
(c) www.autoblog.com

2006 Sales: Toyota’s Number Three

Toyota President Jim Lentz 2006

Toyota finished third in overall sales in the U.S. during 2006, placing ahead of DaimlerChrysler for the first time in history. Toyota is now inching closer to the second spot traditionally held by the Ford Motor Co.
In addition, the Toyota brand is within striking distance of becoming the best-selling automotive brand in the U.S. , close to overtaking both the Ford brand and General Motors' Chevrolet division, which have traditionally led in sales for most of the past century.
Toyota enjoyed its best year ever in 2006, selling 2,220,090 vehicles, while Ford recaptured brand leadership last year with sales of 2,433,086 units to Chevrolet's sales of 2,415,428 units.
Ford's lead is now down basically to the capacity of the Toyota truck plant in San Antonio, Texas, which is producing the new 2007 Tundra.
December frost
Both GM and Ford reported that their U.S. sales fell 13 percent in December on lower demand for pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles, while Toyota Motor Corp.'s sales increased 12 percent in the month.
Overall, U.S. sales of cars and light trucks fell 3.6 percent last month to 1.43 million, from 1.48 million units a year earlier, according to Autodata Corp. Full-year sales dropped 2.6 percent to 16.56 million from 16.99 million, for the lowest total since 1998. Most of the decline was concentrated at GM and Ford.
Jim Lentz, Toyota Motor sales executive vice president, said Toyota benefited from sales of several new models as well as the continuing popularity of its more fuel-efficient models. Sales of Toyota passenger cars increased 13 percent and its truck sales were up 12 percent, Lentz said during a conference call.
In December, Toyota was aided by a 19-percent increase for the Camry, the best-selling car in the U.S. for the fifth year in a row. Sales also rose 16 percent for the Corolla small car, Lentz said. Toyota wound up boosting its U.S. market share to 15.4 percent last year from 13.3 percent a year earlier,
DaimlerChrysler's full-year sales fell 5.5 percent to 2.39 million. Chrysler's declined 7 percent to 2.14 million, while Mercedes gained 11 percent to 248,080, which wasn't enough to hold off the charge by Toyota. In December DaimlerChrysler said its total sales fell to 218,530 from 220,641, with a one-percent gain at Chrysler and a 9.9-percent drop at Mercedes-Benz.
The drop in December sales left GM with its lowest annual total sales since 1970, when its production was crippled by a massive strike by the United Auto Workers. Ford sales declined for the sixth year in a row in 2006.
In response, GM said it was cutting its North American production in the first quarter by 20,000 vehicles, or 1.8 percent.
George Pipas, Ford's sales analyst, said in a conference call that the automaker expects to reduce sales to rental-car companies and other fleet customers in 2007 by 20 percent, and the company's market share is expected to fall again this year.
Honda reported that its sales dropped slightly in December, but the company's full-year sales in the U.S. rose 3.2 percent to 1.51 million, marking its 13th straight annual gain.
Nissan reported its sales increased slightly in December but overall its sales dropped 5.3 percent in 2006. It was the company's first annual decline in the U.S.in five years.
Subaru, however, reported its sales topped 200,000 units and Mitsubishi also reported a slight gain. Hyundai and Kia reported sales records for 2006.
(c) www.thecarconnection.com

2007 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible Concept

How do you top the biggest hit of last year's North American International Auto Show? How about by cutting the top off of the Chevrolet Camaro concept car? A ragtop prototype of the hit pony car will be making its official debut at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, and company officials hint that, as with the coupe, the Camaro cabriolet will soon find its way into the Chevy showroom.
Once one of the country's most popular muscle cars, the Camaro grew bloated and outdated, ultimately fading into oblivion. But the long-rumored concept car that showed up at Detroit 's Cobo Hall, last January, gave the marque a new lease on life. Lifting just the right amount of retro design cues, it was crisp and curvaceous, with a muscularity that screamed for action.
It didn't take senior GM managers long to recognize the winner on their hands - quickly approving a production version - nor could they miss, in the words of Ed Welburn, GM's vice president of global design, that "The best follow-up to last year's award-winning Camaro concept is a Camaro convertible."
With Hugger Orange pearl tri-coat paint, and a pair of gunmetal gray sports stripes, the ragtop looks very much like the original coupe concept, with subtle tweaks reflecting the steady move towards production - and Welburn assures TheCarConnection.com that the Camaro launching in 2009 will look very, very much like the original, 2006 concept.
"The new Camaro concepts bridge heritage with contemporary style, with a design that is simultaneously admired among import-influenced youth and traditional enthusiasts," declares chief exterior designer Brian Smith.
Minor changes have been made to accommodate the canvas top, such as the front windshield surround and backseat. But overall dimensions are essentially identical to that of the concept Camaro coupe.
The ragtop rides on 21-inch tires, up front, with 22s in back. They're mounted on deep-dish, five-spoke wheels featuring charcoal center sections with bright outer edges and an orange outline on the wheel edge.
A variety of details underscore the performance heritage of the Camaro convertible, including the rear fender gills, racing-style fuel filler door and the Corvette-derived hood scoop.
GM is being consciously vague about what's underneath that hood, apparently hoping to save at least a few surprises for the official Detroit show debut. They're hinting, "The Camaro convertible concept is motivated by a torquey V-8 engine that rightly sends power to the rear wheels via a manual transmission." We've got a sneaking suspicion we'll see a 400-plus horsepower version of a Corvette-derived V-8.
The coupe features four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. Going to IRS would be a leg up on Camaro's arch-rival, the Mustang; Ford beancounters choose to go with a live rear axle in order to hold down costs.
GM has had plenty of decisions dictated by its own, penny-pinching accountants, over the years. And some of those ill-conceived actions were responsible for killing off the Camaro brand for several years. As with Mustang, the General intends to market a variety of versions of the next-generation Camaro, starting with a base, V-6 model and running well up in both horsepower and price. But company officials firmly insist they won't strip the car down like they might have in the past.
We'll wait to see, of course, and a good indication will be found in the passenger compartment. Interior design has become the new auto industry battleground, and GM is ramping up spending, on average, several hundred dollars a vehicle on its cabins. The interior of the Camaro concept coupe, with its deep-orange metal accents, was unexpectedly elegant, and the new convertible is even more appealing.
To provide an airy feel, the color theme is light-on-dark. The seats are platinum-on-black suede and leather. The round-gauges-in-square-holes design of the instrument panel is clearly influenced by the original Camaro. Smoked satin aluminum provides the accent with such elements as the vents, seat handles, and seatbelt buckles, while the shifter and pedals have been forged from billet aluminum.
When the Camaro coupe rolled into Cobo last year, heralded by a marching band, it was still the subject of a lot of internal debate at GM. Not so the convertible. With the two-door hardtop on the production schedule for 2009, the automaker has already gone and reserved a place for the ragtop to follow, a matter of months later.
No surprise. It's easy to imagine the convertible will prove as big a hit this year as the Camaro coupe did in January 2006.
(c) www.thecarconnection.com

And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Parts: Lift Support

The materials that comprise a hatchback or hood can add up to wicked heavy in a hurry. Heavy is the absolute last thing you need to knock you on the noggin while attempting to retrieve an errant can of pork n' beans or your favorite beverage out of the trunk or hatchback floor. Lift supports work in much the same way as shock absorbers. They also wear out just the same. If your hatchback has gone droopy or trunk stopped staying open, then a replacement lift support can limit future head knocking. Using broomstick, baseball bat, emergency roadside kit, or similar makeshift hood or hatchback support in place of factory-engineered equipment is a head injury waiting to happen.
Venus Flytrap
Lift support replacement is a relatively simple task but can also be potentially dangerous. The utmost caution should be taken anytime a gaping maw of steel and glass lay in wait to take a bite out of you like an automotive Venus Flytrap. This is one case where two heads really are better than one, and four hands will prevent any unwelcome concussions. Do not use any makeshift device to hold up hood or hatchback while replacing lift supports. It will inevitably fail and result in pinched fingers or head clobbering.
No Expenses Paid
Getting down to the two 10mm bolts that hold the lift support to the vehicle body may require special tools and considerable swearing. If luck is on your side there will be one bolt on the bottom of the lift support, and one on the top. Those less lucky will get a no expenses paid world fastener tour, which may include such highlights as Canadian square head screws and plastic compression plugs from Luxembourg. Lift supports can be found under trunk, hatchback, and hood, so there are more than a few possible configurations out there. As in any two-sided replacement procedure always work with one side at a time. Leaving one side assembled as a reference point can save headache.
Stuff You'll Need
· A willing and attentive helper
· Basic hand tools
· Possible oddball interior panel removal tools
· Replacement lift support or supports
Peer carefully at each end of the lift support before ordering up replacements. All ball-ends, fasteners, and swaged in swivels should be the same on the set of replacement support. Also make note of any electrical connections for rear-mounted wipers or other gizmos. Take care in removing plastic covers. Careful means if it feels like it's going to break, it will. Search for hidden fasteners before cracking panels.
Note position of all fasteners and lift support hardware before beginning. With attentive helper holding up the hatchback, hood, or truck first remove one end of the lift support. Retain any clips, ball ends, fasteners, or other gizmos.
Remind allegedly attentive helper to continue holding things up. Remove fasteners on other end of the lift support, and remove the old lift support from the body. Never attempt to cut apart gas-charged lift supports. Another gas-charged tip is to leave the plastic retaining strap on the new lift support until ready to install.
Mount in any new supplied ball ends or swivels before cutting the strap on the new lift support.
In this case the replacement lift supports came with a spring steel c-clip cup end in place of the original swaged in unit. Use a screwdriver to open up c-clip mount.
Push the cup end of the lift support onto the ball end mount. Push on steel c-clip to secure cup on ball end. Droopy lids and trunks will soon be thing of the past.
Repeat removal and replacement procedure on the other side. Tell helper to take a break. Clean any greasy fingerprints and residue off lift support rod before closing hatchback or hood, as debris can cause damage to the seals inside the lift support. – Mike Bumbeck

(c) www.jalopnik.com

Bentley Continental GTC named Robb Report 2007 COTY

by John Neff

In a field populated with such cars as the Porsche 911 Turbo, Maybach 57S and even the Bugatti Veyron, the Bentley Continental GTC handily walked away with the honor of being named the Robb Report 2007 Car of the Year. Apparently it wasn't even a contest, as nearly half of the luxury lifestyle magazine's editors and the 41-person panel of car experts tasked with judging the contest picked the GTC as their favorite. The spec sheet of Bentley's newest drop top shows that very few compromises are built into its $190,000 price tag: a twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12, 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, top speed just shy of 200 mph, four seats, and traditional open air-motoring. We're pretty confident the magazine made the right choice, at least for its fllthy rich readers.
(c) www.autoblog.com

Toyota Developing Alcohol Detection System For Cars

Toyota is developing a car system that is aimed at keeping the roads safe from drunken drivers

Toyota is in the process of developing a system designed so that cars would be able to detect drunken drivers and automatically shut down. According to reports, the world's current No. 2 automaker plans on fitting some cars with the system by the end of 2009.
The detection system will be released as an optional extra. Toyota hopes that it can be installed on all car models once manufacturing prices have dropped.
New cars equipped in the system will not start if driving wheel sweat sensors pick up a high level of alcohol in the driver's bloodstream. The Toyota system will also be able to detect if a driver is driving abnormally, along with a camera that is used to determine whether or not the driver has pupils that are dilated -- a sign that the driver may have had too much to drink. If the system picks up any of the signals, the car will slow down and come to a complete stop.
Other car manufacturers have also been experimenting with systems that aim at detecting whether or not a driver is sober enough to drive safely. In the United States, for example, alcohol ignition-interlocks are being used for drunk drivers with prior offenses.

(c) www.dailytech.com
