While your cat may well need to be hospitalized at your veterinary office for an operation or intensive nursing care, cats generally thrive best in surroundings that are familiar to them. Therefore your veterinarian will probably be eager to return your cat to you as soon as possible.

It is thus essential that you are clear about any specific directions that are given to you, and you should not hesitate to contact the office if you are unclear in any way. Administering medicines reliably is also extremely important – but sometimes easier said than done. The following guidelines should help you.

Dealing With Wounds
If your cat has had an operation, there is a strong chance that it will have a sutured wound. Cats do not tolerate bandages very well, so the stitches may be uncovered, and the cat is bound to lick at the wound. This does not usually do any harm, but if any stitches do come loose, then you should closely supervise the cat to try and prevent any more from being removed and visit the veterinarian at the earliest opportunity. If the wound is gaping open, it may well have to be resutured, so do not give your cat a meal before you visit the office in case a general anesthetic has to be given.

In some cases it is necessary to fit the cat with an Elizabethan collar, a wide plastic cone that fits over the neck and physically prevents the cat from picking at a wound while still letting it eat and drink. These are not particularly popular with cats, especially when they first go on, but most cats eventually get used to them after a day or two. If your cat does come home complete with a bandage or a cast, you should ensure that it is kept clean and dry. If you notice an unpleasant smell, a lot of swelling, or if the cat seems particularly uncomfortable, you should return to have the wound checked as a dressing that is too tight or becomes infected can do a lot more harm than good.

The Role of TLC
Follow your veterinarian’s advice about letting your cat outdoors, which will almost certainly be inadvisable if it does have a dressing or cast applied. After some operations it may be particularly important for your cat to rest and keep as still as possible. In these circumstances, confining the cat to a cage or a modified playpen may be necessary, only taking your pet out to hold it on your lap and fuss over it.

Cats, like people, respond well to a large dose of that magic ingredient – Tender Loving Care. A warm bed, some tasty food, and the company of their favorite person constitute the ideal prescription for a speedy recovery.

Grasp the cat’s head firmly on either side of the jaw. Bend the head gently but firmly backward until the lower jaw begins to drop open. Push the tablet onto the “V” right at the back of the cat’s throat.
