Comments: Obverse features bust of Johannes Paul Krueger. Reverse features arms of the South African Republic. This is the single shaft variety denoting the single shaft from the wagon on the reverse. The double shaft variety has a mintage of just over 4,300 pieces making it more valuable than the single shaft variety. I paid just below $500 for this example, an expensive coin for me but I got it slightly below catalogue value so I am happy. I think South Africa being in the news lately for a group of white South Africans being granted refugee status in the US made me a bit more interested in pulling the trigger on this example.

Comments: This coin commemorates the 20th Anniversary of the Buddhist Fellowship. Obverse features King Rama IX. Reverse features the Dharmachakra or Buddhist wheel of law. I have been the underbidder on this coin many times over the past few years. Catalogue value says $30 but I usually see them going for $50 in lower MS grades and upwards of $100 in higher grades. I was lucky to get this one for just over $50. This adds a new country to my collection and is a birth year coin for me.

Comments: Obverse features standing liberty. Reverse features flags surrounding arms within circle. I have had this coin on my want list for over 20 years. They don't come around very often and when they do the sell for three to five time catalog value. Unknown mintage on this type so I am not sure of rarity but they seem pretty based on the time it took me to find one. I paid on the lower end of that but don't feel like I overpaid as I am just glad to add it to my collection.

Comments: For the 100th anniversary of the end of Morgan dollar the US mint decided to restrike the coin with mintmarks from each of the current mints, Philadelphia and Denver, as well as coins with CC and O privy marks for Carson City and Denver. These were very popular coins with collectors and speculators when they went on sale causing the mint's website to crash during the ordering period. I believe all coins sold out within a couple hours or less. I decided just to pick up a coin from Philadelphia and not deal with the website craziness. Although I really don't collect US coins anymore, I did start there and it is kind of cool to see what a Morgan looks like in perfect condition.

Comments: Obverse features Christa McAuliffe, a teacher and astronaut who was killed on the space shuttle Challenger. Reverse features three children and the caption "I touch the future, I Teach". I haven't purchased any US commemorative coins from the US mint in almost 7 year but I picked this one up for a couple reasons. First, I remember distinctly being in 8th grade and watching the space shuttle launch with the local teacher, Christa McAuliffe, and then my horror and confusion as it exploded. Second, now 35 years later, I am a teacher myself, so it is nice to see my profession featured on a coin.

Comments: This is the new silver eagle design for the 35th anniversary. This coin was released with a type 1 silver eagle (original design) both with a reverse proof finish. The official name of the set is the 2021 American Eagle One Ounce Silver Reverse Proof Two-Coin Set Designer Edition. I haven't purchased anything from the US mint in almost 10 years but there are a couple products this year that I was interested in so I opened up may wallet. Will be posting more in the next couple weeks. I will say that the ordering process from the US mint leaves a lot to be desired. This product's release date was changed then ordering it took me almost an hour and a half with website crashes and errors. Looks pretty nice in hand, but very hard to photograph.

I have been wanting to pick up a Haitian Gourde for years now but they tend to be pretty pricey, especially certified. I got this example for around $150. I am getting to the point on my collecting journey where I already have most of the sub $100 coins that I want. Unless I purchase a modern or a commemorative, which I do from time to time if the subject of the coin has some interest to me. I would much rather pic up a coin from the 1600s - 1800s though.

For me there is a psychological barrier for paying more than $150 for a coin. It is kind of silly though as I have had years where I have purchased over a dozen coins at $50 or more each. But it is just tough for me to spend $150 or more on one coin. The last few years I have been buying less coins but spending more on each coin so it kind of balances out. Once I break the barrier it gets easier so maybe in a couple years from now I will be purchasing $250 coins on a regular basis.
