We finally sat down and watched the film “Bill Cunningham New York” tonight. It was really enjoyable. He’s super adorable and a sweet. I can’t believe his zest for life. He’s like, what, 84? He is still riding his bike around New York everyday all day, photographing people and documenting street fashions and trends and just has such a joy for life and for what he is doing. Super interesting character.

Look I Love: Crazy for color

“Jewel tones” as they are being referred to, are all the rage this spring. But whatever you wanna call it, I’m hooked. I love the fun bright happy colors I am seeing everywhere and can’t wait to wear more of them as the weather warms. I started my introduction to the world of crazy colored clothing items with a pair of red skinny jeans that I got over the holidays. Then my mother in law gave me an awesome coral wool jcrew skirt (seen below). And then recently I got a pair of coral cotton shorts at Target as well as some awesome orange skinny slacks that john just gifted me (thanks love). I think I’m hooked. Plus, it’s pretty hard to be grumpy when you are wearing bright orange pants right? How could every day not be awesome when you are dressed like a rainbow?

Yay! New Hair!

I’m so excited that I finally got my hair done this weekend. I love the way the color turned out, perfect for spring/summer. Besides, it may be February, but here in LA it already feels like spring.

(my kitchen has the best light and John isn’t home to take a picture of me….so….kitchen pics it is! haha)

I’m too excited about it to wear it up just yet, but I can’t wait to play around with some up-dos. I love the way the blonde/red looks against my natural color. The contrast is fun. woo hoo, yay for changes. I was looong over due for something new and fun.

Weekend adventures

We had a busy and fun weekend. On Saturday (among other things) we met up with some friends at the LACMA to check out a couple showings. I really enjoyed the California Living 1930-1965 exhibit. I took a few photos while we were there and thought I would share some favorites with you. There were so many amazing things, furniture you wish you owned, graphic design inspirations etc. Too much good stuff to keep to myself.

We signed up for a membership, which is exciting. I’ve never done that before. So hopefully we will be back fairly often.
We have actually seen a lot of great exhibits lately. You may remember my photographer obsession, Hedi Slimane? Well he had a show that ended last weekend and we made a point to catch it. Sooo glad we did. He blows my mind every time. Super inspiring. And Saturday, before heading to LACMA, we saw the Vivian Maier show before that came down! Do you remember when I shared her story with you? Well, her show also left me speechless and inspired. So all in all, yay for art, go LA, thanks for inspiring me!

Ease into your week

This is insane and amazing. If you have seen it (it’s been circulating) watch it again, if you haven’t prepare to enjoy yourself. I think its insanely creative and impressive. Five people (known as Walk Off the Earth) cover Goyte’s “Somebody that I used to Know” using one instrument, played at the same time by all five people, coming up with really in-genius ways to make new sounds to fill out the whole song, they also take turns singing different parts of the song. It’s beautiful.

Swissted

Two totally unrelated things I love are punk music and swiss modern posters. Apparently I’m not alone. New York designer Mike Joyce has combined the two things into an awesome project called Swissted. Based on actual shows, he’s taken the content and created a new flyer for each show all set in berthold akzidenz grotesk medium, all lowercase.
Here are a few of my favorites…mostly chosen for the bands.

Studio Tour: Love Me Do Photography

I have a special treat for your guys today, before you head off to your weekend. The girls over at Love Me Do Photography recently moved into a new studio, which meant they got to design a whole new space and they have been kind enough to share it with us!

who are you/ what do you do/ where are you located?
We are Carina and Amanda, freelance and wedding photographers operating under the trademark Love Me Do Photography.
Our studio is located in Philadelphia, Pa.

what is your favorite thing about your job?
Taking pictures! You’d think we get tired of always photographing things, but every chance we get to do something fun with photography, we’re on top of it! Also, we like hanging out together. It’s really nice to have a partner working along side with you, especially when you’re self employed. We could be working on totally different projects, but having someone there to talk and joke around with really makes the whole working experience a lot more enjoyable.

how long have you been in the space?
We moved our studio back in May of 2011, but there was a bit of construction still going on, so we officially starting using the space around July or August of 2011.

whats the square footage?
apx 600 sq ft

whats your favorite thing in the neighborhood… or what do you love about the neighborhood?
We have an authentic mexican restaurant right across the street from us. I mean, can you really get much better than that?? There’s also an abundance of coffee shops, bars, restaurants and boutiques just up the block from us, and we share the building with dozens of other artists. It’s a nice little community.

what are your must haves for a creative space?
Good natural lighting is #1. We work with light, so having our space well lit is a must. Also, we didn’t want it to be too bright in there because we work on computers. So we picked a studio that faces northwest. We also wanted the studio to be spacious, yet manageable. We didn’t want something that was going to be overwhelming, but we didn’t want to be squished either. This space turned out perfectly for us!

what was your biggest resource for designing the space?
Thrift stores and our friends. We had collected a good deal of antique furniture and items from thrift shops, flea markets and estate sales. Putting them together took some thought on our end, making sure pieces fit well together and that it just didn’t look like a bunch of mis-matched furniture and items throw about. We also have a good deal of talented friends who hand-made a bunch of our items in the studio.

Large wooden table: made by Jesse Parsons
Buffalo paper mache head: Meg Lemieur

We took ideas from Design Sponge to paint the buffet table (grey and white stripes).

do you have a favorite item or area in the studio?
My favorite item is definitely the Buffalo Head. A close second would be a 4-way tie between my desk, the table, the coffee table, and our pink couch.
