Embracing Imperfection

I notice the dirt underneath my feet as it gently snuggles against my flesh, inviting me to become the earth for a moment. I inhale the environment, filling my lungs with the minerals that have been at rest, like me. I can taste it's life as it transitions into blood and replaces my emptiness. I feel alive.

I thought I would share my process on this series. One of my most difficult obstacles is controlling the inner-critic, who likes perfection. Over the last few years through my life experiences, I have learned that the imperfection is where the beauty truly lies.

The acrylic washing allows the art to form, in it's raw organic state. Then I can let it go.

Head Sculpture

This sculpture was created a few years ago but has recently been influencing the evolution process in The Black and White series. I'm drawn to the element of spontaneity, which was a key component in the glazing of the head sculpture and is a focal point in the Black and White paintings.

This sculpture was fired in Nils Lou’s East Creek Anagama in Willamina, Oregon; one of only a few wood burning kilns in the United States.

This head survived an incredibly fierce environment inside the home-made kiln. Pieces of wood were dropped into the kiln, every 10- 15 minutes, around the clock for several days. The ash from the wood is what gives it it's unique glaze and texture.

I've found one of the hardest skills to practice is self-discipline. Working through the muck of re-learning the basic elements of painting is a very draining, yet satisfying process. So far, doing the Black and White studies is helping to gently wake up the right side of my brain, which has been at rest for a few years. I guess it would be a similar process for a musician who would tune an instrument before playing. I still feel rusty.

A New Beginning

This is the beginning of something new and fresh. A change in the direction of wellness and healing through artistic expression.

It will take a few days to learn my way around here. Paintings forthcoming.
