Here is what you can do to create an active lifestyle for your family:
- Limit TV/ Computer time
- Be a role model for your children
- Go on walks
- play at the park
- get involved in a sport league and or exercise program, bring your child to watch
- make these things part of your daily or nightly routines

Be on the look out for our ECE walking program starting in Spring!

Wash your hands and your child's hands when you get to school

Keep your child home when they are sick

By Shelley Butler

One sunny summer day, I looked out the window to see my son and a friend spinning and laughing, playing at something known only to the two of them, unfettered by time, expectations, or adult rules. Never before had I seen such pure expressions of joy. Were they playing to learn or consciously seeking new information or skills? No, but if you look closely, they were exploring spatial relationships, honing motor capabilities, practicing social skills and language, creatively thinking, gathering information about the world through their senses, or to put it simply, learning through play.

Play may be as old as the existence of humankind. Playthings have been discovered in the artifacts of ancient civilizations and many believe that the earliest chess pieces date back to 6,000 B.C. Though the link between play and learning was more fully investigated in the 20th century by theorists such as Jean Piaget, the connection was made as early as the first century B.C. by Plato, “You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.”

What is now undeniably clear in the 21st century is that play is essential, vital, critical, and fundamental to a child’s social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development. Without adequate, healthy play, children run the risk of entering school unprepared, growing into teens and adults without needed skills, and failing to meet their potential. Experts at the Institute for Play believe that healthy play in childhood can even prevent violence.

Through joyful, healthy play, children begin a love of learning and prepare for life itself.

What is Play?

Play is recreation, amusement, or fun. Even more says Jeanne Bassis, founder of PlayReflections® (www.PlayReflections.com) who offers “playshops” for adults, “Play is not just about doing, it’s about being. Play is a state of grace, innocence, wonder and creativity... and happens when anyone is truly living in the present tense.”

The natural activity of early childhood, play is what children do and their way of life. For young children, there is no distinction between play and learning; they are one and the same. Playing is a priority in early childhood, yet not all play is the same.

Most experts agree that children’s play can be divided into these categories:

Active play: running, jumping, climbing, riding, and other use of large muscles.

Quiet play: reading, stringing, coloring, etc.

Cooperative or social play: games and activities that involve more than one.

Solitary play: drawing, dreaming, or any activity that involves only one.

Manipulative play: putting together puzzles, building with blocks, cutting and pasting, or any activity that involves eye-hand coordination or fine motor skills.

Creative play: painting, molding, solving problems, making music, telling stories, or any activity that involves a child’s imagination.

Dramatic play: dress-up, make-believe, or any play that involves pretending.

The categories overlap and any activity will likely fall into more than one. For example, playing “Tag” is active and cooperative at the same time. Though children could care less which category their play falls into, it is valuable for parents, teachers, and adults who work with young children to understand the types in order to provide opportunities for children to engage in them all.

Has Play Changed?

Yes, according to the Alliance for Childhood and others. Overscheduling, emphasis on academics in preschool, too much sedentary screen time, lack of safe place spaces, and violent TV/movie-based toys all threaten healthy playtime, putting play at risk. In the wave of expanding accountability in education, millions of preschoolers are taking standardized tests now; if children are taking more tests, then they are playing less.

The digital age has had a huge impact on children’s play, as well. Dr. David Elkind, noted child development expert, theorizes that a faster speed of life characterized by instant access to information via the Internet and to each other through cell phones has garnered a sense that people can do more, leading to booking more commitments for children. In addition, this acceleration of life has contributed to the idea that earlier is better leading to more academics for young children.

How to Promote Healthy, Valuable Play

Even though research has proven the value of play, play is at risk, making it more important than ever to support healthy play for all children. Here’s how:

Create safe play environments and toys; lobby for clean, safe outdoor play spaces for all children.

Focus on the learning that happens through play; use play as the means to teach and foster development.

Provide a wide variety of play experiences and materials through which young kids can try new things, experiment, ask questions, talk, read, sing, dance, get messy at times, explore, and listen.

Fuel creativity, curiosity, and the desire to know more.

Allow time for free play in which children are choosing and directing play, balanced with structured play.

Monitor play and step in with an idea if a conflict arises, offer a new prop when enthusiasm wanes, or redirect play as needed.

Offer opportunities to play safely outdoors as well as indoors.

Adopt a playful attitude, and model playing.

Most importantly, value play! Notice and comment on children’s healthy play to show that you recognize the importance and meaning of play in their lives.

When children have this kind of support, the benefits include gaining confidence as well as self-esteem, building relationships, problem-solving, conflict resolution, expanding language, understanding rules and limits, discovering talents, sparking creativity, inspiring thinking, defining personality, and sorting out likes and dislikes. In fact, healthy, valuable play touches on every area of a child’s development.

Expanding the Vision of Play

Traditional ideas of play include setting aside time for children to play games or with toys, yet circumstances for play are everywhere, most all the time. Everyone can play everyday by extending the idea of play to include a playful approach to life and looking for play opportunities in ordinary places, as well as in traditional ways.

Consider the story of Shau-yu, who asks her father for permission to play, but is told she must go on an errand first. In On My Way to Buy Eggs by Chih-Yuan Chen (Kane/Miller), a child takes a playful journey through the neighborhood, imitating a cat walking on a roof, turning the world into an ocean with the help of a colored marble, and more. She finds chances to play and learn wherever she goes. After reading this book together, take a walk with a child and see how many ways to play that you both can find along the way. .

Then, take a lesson from Billy, who only wanted a bucket for his birthday but has to talk his parents into giving him this seemingly meager gift instead of a new computer game or a bike. Billy’s Bucketby Kes Gray and Garry Parsons (Candlewick) shows that play is in the eye of the beholder and that everyday objects make great playthings. An unadorned bucket is the gateway for Billy’s imagination to blossom. Though the adults in his life don’t see it at first, the bucket becomes home to sea lions, fish, barracuda, and possibly a mermaid. After reading together, give children empty buckets and ask them for ideas on how to play with it, what could be inside, or let them fill it up with their own treasures.

Discarding notions of “play time” and turning every part of the day into playful time, sometimes using everyday objects for children, increases the potential for learning. Here’s a few ideas:

Spoon Surprise When setting out spoons, ask children to do a simple science experiment. Look at the back of a shiny spoon until a reflection is seen. Then, turn the spoon over and look into the bowl of the spoon to find a reflection again. What happened? Seems like magic to children but from this simple play with an ordinary object, they can learn much about how reflections come from light, and when light hits a surface that is concave, it reacts differently causing your reflection to appear upside down.

Name That Sound When driving, walking, or anytime you need to establish quiet time or create a calm transition, ask children to be still, listen for sounds, and identify as many as they can with your help.

In and Out Show children an example of something that is “in” such as a car in a garage or a bear inside a toy box, and an example of an object that is out. Ask children to find as many “ins and outs” as they can. Great for children who are bored or stuck in a place they don’t want to be. Works well with other pains of concepts such as above/below, long/short, etc.

Playing for Life

The president of the American Association for the Child’s Right to Play and professor at Hofstra University, Dr. Rhonda Clements, says, “It is important to maintain a healthy sense of play throughout childhood and into adulthood. Our complex society requires clear thinkers, playful attitudes, humor and creativity for complex problem solving.” Not only does play help children grow and develop as as well as begin a lifelong love of learning, but the healthy play that you support today helps prepare children for the world that they will work, play, and learn in as adults.

Thomas Aquinas (1) defined "human" as, "a being with brains and hands. As such our greatest joy comes when we can employ both our brains and our hands simultaneously in ways which are creative, useful, and productive." As a potter, father, grandfather, teacher, artist, and art educator, I have a longstanding interest in how much children love to work with clay. Most children, up to ages six to eight are by nature curious and self-confident about everything. While they instinctively love to use their hands, many children have been acculturated to worry about getting "dirty." I show them how easy it is to rinse and sponge the clay off their hands and they lose all inhibitions and plunge in. The author's daughter at 30 months. She is having some fun imitating dad.

photo © Marvin Bartel

Toy companies, in attempts to sell more stuff, do their part to ruin creativity in childhood by suggesting too many answers and by including too many gadgets. I have no problems with Play Doh® and similar modeling products as materials. However, gadgets like extruders, molds, cookie cutters, or any design suggestions or pattern books take original thinking, problem solving, and creativity. Too often when it is modeling time in a pre-school or a kindergarten the children rush over to the rolling pins and cookie cutters. If I want children to respond to clay in healthy creative ways, I first hide or trash the gadgets and any tools that limit possibilities.

A 3 year-old boy adds ears to his rabbits while the rabbit takes a break in one of Bartel's stoneware bowls nearby.

2002 photo © Marvin Bartel

Is learning a process or a product?
Children who have become discouraged by their own drawing ability often find clay much less threatening. Fortunately, there are fewer adult "experts" who are anxious to make insensitive corrections in a child's clay work than in drawing.
Once young children have some experience with clay, all they need is some clay. I try not to give suggestions, but I have learned to phrase open questions. If a child is sculpting, "I am playing with my dog, Shaggy." A much richer piece develops when I ask, "What games do you and Shaggy play? What things does Shaggy like to play with? How does Shaggy feel when you rub her neck? What does Shaggy like to chew on?" This is a standard method also known as accretion. The same ideas that work with drawing also work with clay. When I ask open questions, I am, to use Viktor Lowenfeld's(2) terms, "Making passive knowledge active." It works well when children are making sculpture based on their own experience.
In most cases it is most natural for younger children to make things by combining pieces of clay. Lowenfeld called this the synthetic method where a child often begins with a body and adds legs, head, tail and so on. In what he called the analytic method, the child is asked to begin with a single lump and squeeze the parts from it.
How to emphasize the third-dimensional
If I am working with children of six or older who have never made three-dimensional artwork, I find it helpful to have them start with a simple sculpture that can be formed in their hands without setting the clay on the table as they work. Using a comfortably sized lump of soft clay, they are encouraged to keep turning it in their hands so they can see it from every direction as they work. Younger children will generally need to make sculpture by the "synthetic" method of sticking lots of pieces together like bodies, legs, tail and head. Three-dimensional quality comes naturally for these children. I sometimes simply have them turn the piece around. Turn it upside down to check the bottom, and so on.
What content is appropriate for children?
Young children do most of their work from their ownexperiences. Select "I and my" topics. "I am playing with my stuffed kangaroo." "This is my family." "This is my baby sister."
Observation is the second good source of inspiration. I go to the thing observed. We discuss it before starting. I will use my pointing finger, and ask questions. I will call attention to the attributes in some detail. I point to various parts and ask detailed questions about form and size relationships, about surface and texture, and about point of view, attitude, feeling, and so on. I will turn the model or have the child move around the subject of observation. Children will benefit more if they learn to make their own observations and interpretations of what they see. I do not want to limit their creative options by making them dependent on copy work from clay objects - especially not mine. I avoid doing demonstrations, but I encourage them to experiment. I want them to become self-sufficient in visual thinking and problem solving - not just in their clay making skills.

This child is adding texture to her rabbit sculpture based on a rabbit she is taking care for a neighbor who is out of town. She made observations while feeding the rabbit and is now remembering the experience.
photos © Marvin Bartel

Imagination is the third source of inspiration for sculpture. I believe that very different parts of the brain are developed in each of the processes of observation, memory (working from everyday experiences), and imagination. All three are developmentally important. Imagination is our brain's way to test our words and our actions before saying or doing things. Our imagination is what allows us to empathize with others. Of course we all use all three ways of thinking in every activity without ever thinking about thinking.
Imaginary sculpture topics might include monsters, creatures, life on other planets, things in the future, and adaptations from real object to make them funny, dangerous, more like humans, more like toys, and so on. Making clichés from comics, television, movies, and so on, do not help develop imagination. It creates a subtle form of dependency. When working with children who have gotten stuck on clichés, I might start with an observation project and then suggest that they convert them to imaginary projects by suggesting a change in the method of locomotion. A dog becomes a dog-bird, dog-fish, motor-dog, or jelly-dog. Caricature is also a great way to lighten up the mood.
Designing craft items
Children also enjoy making useful objects and vessels from clay. Pinching and coiling are intuitive. Designing functional work is another way to develop the imagination and visual thinking. Very little demonstration or instruction is needed. Demonstrations can easily give children the impression that following directions is more important than invention. Instead of demonstrating these things to young children, I like to ask them how they want to do these things and how they want the things to look. I then encourage them to experiment.
I ask questions about what they think the piece can be used for, how easy it will be to clean, how easy it will break, and so on. This helps them clarify design problems, but does not solve the problems for them.
If they neglect to smooth the surface, I might ask them if they like it better when it is bumpy or smooth. If they say smooth, I might ask if they can think of ways to smooth it. If they are hesitant to try things, I suggest they take another piece clay and try some things on it. If they say that they want it bumpy, I might ask if they like texture. If they say yes, I might give them extra clay to practice making textures. They then select one for the piece of pottery being made. They are learning to experiment, to invent, and to think. Their product is not being designed for me, but for them. I am the consultant, not the director. If I see them make a joint that seems inadequate, I might ask if they would feel bad if it came apart. I might them ask if they can figure out a way to make the joint a bit stronger.
With older children, I have them practice making good and bad joints, testing how strong they are by immediately pulling on them to see how easily they come apart. This encourages them to be "scientific" as well as artistic. I might have them make five handles on one cup and then leave only the one or two they like the best. I want them to learn to make choices and how to learn experientially.

Should children learn to throw?
Throwing can be learned at any age just as the violin can be learned at any age. However, it takes a skilled violinist who understands children to help a three-year-old learn to play. In my opinion, only a skilled potter who understands children should attempt to help a three year old learn to throw. I am not convinced that learning to throw at young age has the same benefits as learning to play violin at a young age. I learned to throw in college. Most potters that I know were able to learn the skill at a fairly mature age. The author is helping a 4 year old who is learning how centering is done.

photos © Marvin Bartel

I will say that my best college student throwers have been those that had a good throwing teacher during their early teen years. Several of my best students have been the younger siblings of one of my pottery students.
With young children, I spend time getting to know them. Sometimes we snack together using some nice pottery cups and bowls. As we work, I talk everything over withthem as we do it. We use very soft aged and perfectly wedged clay, so they can feel some control. I help brace their hands and fingers when they first learn so that they kinesthetically sense the force that is needed. I give them many choices about shape, width, height, and so on. I explain each force that is being applied so they understand how each force has an effect on the clay. I explain that every piece of pottery we keep will have both our names on it until they are able to do all the work by themselves.
I coach them. If the top is getting very thin, I ask them if they would like to make the top a bit stronger to avoid chipping? If so, I suggest sponging it down a bit so it will thicken and not chip too easily in use. When something is about fall, I warn them to avoid too many failures. When mistakes happen, we learn to say, "Oops." Last December my granddaughter at age four was shopping with her father at pottery guild. She was looking for a gift for her preschool teacher. A potter was showing her a mug. She examined the mug and said, "The potter who made this cup needs a few more lessons. The top is too thin. It would get broken right away."
How to critique children?
In a critique of children's work I have them compare two or more of their own things. They can make choices and explain why they think some things look better to them, work better for them, or express better what they wanted to express. I might add a few observations of my own, but mainly I will point out specific aspects or attributes that I think are working well.
I am careful to avoid negative criticism. Sometimes I can think of a way to gently raise an issue with a question, but even this needs to be done with care and sensitivity. The best way we learn is to keep working. There is no useful purpose served if the child's motivation to work is damaged by my comments. If a child expresses disappointment in something, I encourage more practice and experimentation to solve the problem.
Working to help children develop their creativity requires that we refrain from being overbearing or too directive, but it does allow us be concerned expert coaches, articulate inspirational artists, and encouraging helpers. When it comes to fostering creativity, good open questions are priceless. Good crafts grow out of good thinking, intrinsic desire, and lots of practice; not from external rules.

So why do we have this 'dreaded days', what is your benefit. Let me tell you:

During these days we have staff meetings, trainings so we stay up to date on new education philosophies and trainings that give us fresh and new ideas.

We use in-service times to rotate toys and rearrange the classrooms. This gives the children new places to explore and experiment with.

Although everything gets cleaned on a regular basis, we are able to do a deep cleaning of everything.

During in-service days teacher work together as a team. They create lesson plans together, help each other with classroom layouts and bounce ideas off of each other. Teachers form bonds during these days which creates a cohesive staff.

So when the next days come up in Aug. to get ready for the Fall, remind yourself of the benefits your child will be getting from these days:
A clean and stimulating environment with knowagble teachers who are full of ideas and ready to embrace them with your children when they come back to school.

You might wonder though what we do. I thought I would share with you a couple of videos of Geerafot and Egooanot in gardening. Children enjoyed getting their hands dirty and discovering things that grow in the ground. They planted seeds and watered them. Gardening gives children the opportunity to use multiple sense as well as learn about science and nature.
What wonderful things do the trees give us; fruits, nuts, shade, paper, wood and oxygen. The children have been enjoying celebrating this holiday and are looking forward to our Tu B'shevat seder tomorrow where we will taste the fruits from the trees and honor them with songs and blessings. The two girls were pretending they were doctors and examining the bike while the two boys were stuck behind the girls and all they wanted to do was go. Recently Lana, Jaclyn, Cindy Sadowsky, Lyn and myself went to a fabulous conference in Phoenix for Jewish early childhood educators. It was one of the best conferences we have attended.
I went to a few sessions on blogging, one of different personalities and one on behavior. The ones on blogs gave me more ideas for improving what we are already doing. So I look forward to showing you what your children are learning and doing in the classroom through this blog.
The session on different personalities allowed me to realize that every child, parent and teacher are very different. I learned that everyone responds and acts in a different way. This knowledge will help me in my interactions with everyone.
The one I would like to share more with you is the session I went to on behavior. This was not a session on what disciplinary actions one could take, but gave me insight on how to manage behaviors. At the beginning of the session the instructor asked what we wanted to get out of the session. The number one question everyone had was about biting. What she did say was that she did not have the answer; if she did it would not be such a big problem everywhere. What she does know is that it is a reaction; that is can happen in a matter of seconds even if the teacher or parent is standing right there. She also said that it is developmental. It is a way needs can be met or a sensory input can come from it.
The other thing I got out of this session was that we need to be teaching the children the right thing to do. At young ages they are still learning how to behave; so we must teach them. When for example if they are having trouble sharing a toy you should walk them through the proper things to say and do. So if a child takes a toy out of another child's had you teach them to say, "can I have that toy." "I am playing with it." "Can I play with it when you are done?" "Yes." "When will you be done?" "Three minutes."
I feel so fortunate to be able to continue my education. I know that everyone who went to this conference feels motivated with new knowledge and ideas.

Dance and creative movement are one of our children's favorite classes. One is a morning class and the other is in afternoon. This is a class where children get to move the music. Babies bounce up and down while toddlers crawl, walk and jump; and our preschoolers begin to learn gross motor skills.

Gardening is in the morning activity that uses children's senses. Children get to see, feel and smell soil and plants. Older children learn the science of how a plant grows and about different kind of plants. This is a great hands on experience for all ages.

Yoga is offered for our preschool aged children. They have been enjoying learning different poses and breathing techniques. We have been able to incorporate yoga into our classroom when trying to create a peaceful setting. This is also an afternoon activity and has been a wonderful addition to our program.

Judaics with Rabbi Holtz is a class for our older children. They get to know Rabbi Holtz on a one to one setting. They hear stories and learn about the Jewish culture. Children enjoy sharing what they are thankful for with Rabbi Holtz.

Sign Language is offered to all our children. They see stories and songs in sign as well as learning basic signs. Our teachers are also learning with the children and able to reinforce the sign with them. A letter goes home with you to let you know the signs they learned so you may also use them in you house. This has been a great way for helping young children increase their vocabulary as well as express their feeling.
