I am not sure if it has anything to do with the weather, however we don't seem to embrace colour quite like the English. Think of those cyclamen pink dining rooms that look so fabulous. I am not even sure it works with our sunnier climate.

Hence, my love for English decorating magazines ... probably because 'the look', (their look !!) is just so different to anything we do here. There is no right or wrong ... it is just different!!

Meanwhile, enjoy looking at Soane Britain ... a beautiful website with beautiful products. They do ship to anywhere in the world, if you can bear to wait.

Since my last post I am noticing bookshelves and bookcases everywhere and the ones that work really leap out. The bookshelves above are my idea of perfection. Such an interesting combination of colours, both books and decorative items.

One could call this styling ... the ability to put together bits and pieces that work ... and it is all about having an eye for colour. It is the combination of colours that pull it all together ... or to be quite specific, always work with a complimentary palette of colours.

Apply this principle to any collection whether it be bookshelves or dressing table. There is nothing as elegant as white or cream with a hint of soft metallic. Have a play and see what you can achieve.

I had spent days fluffing around redoing the bookshelves, rearranging ornaments and nic nacs and changing our artwork ... over and over, never quite happy with the end result !! You can imagine how thrilled I was to receive for Mother's Day, Creative Walls - how to display and enjoy your treasured collections, by Geraldine James.

And I am supposed to be good at this sort of thing. I do love it ... the fluffing around bit ... but to be able to flick through endless images of other people's creativity does give you the added confidence to go with your own eye and instinct. Sometimes you need to just walk away and come back with fresh eyes.

I did resist the urge to colour group the books in the library ... mainly because there are just far too many books to start again. However, quite some time was wasted repositioning a few according to subject matter. I just had to put all our books on Churchill together, if nothing else. I am absolutely fascinated by him since reading A Daughter Tale by Mary Soames ... if only I had the time to read more.

Whether it is creating a monochrome, neutral or bold statement with your artwork or artefacts, I feel it all comes down to working with colour. Play around with different groupings and your eye will tell you which colours just work.

A word of warning ... hours will be lost in the process but the end result will be worth it.

Any neutral palette will come alive with the introduction of a little colour !

It could be anything from muted dusty shades to vibrant colour !

A black and white scheme looks sensational with a splash of ... well, any colour really ... hot pink, soft pink, bright orange, brilliant yellow or cobalt blue ...

Refer to previous posts for tips on how to introduce colour into a neutral palette but it can be as simple as fresh flowers or a bookcase full of books.

Of all the rooms in a house the bedroom is possibly the most important ... it is where we spend half our life !!!

1. A good mattress is essential to ensure a restful night's sleep. The very best mattresses support our spines in their natural, neutral position. The latest technology allows the mattress springs to mould to the shape of our body.

2. Mattress toppers are becoming extremely popular ... they add an additional layer of padding and comfort, particularly good where the mattress itself is too firm. Reversible toppers with wool fleece for autumn and winter ... and cotton percale to keep you cool in spring and summer, are the ultimate.

3. Choice of pillow is critical to a good night's sleep. The right choice depends on a number of factors including neck problems, allergies (non allergenic filling choices)and preference for firm or soft, one or two pillows. How soft or firm your pillow feels is determined by the ratio of feather to down used ... feather being firm and down being soft.

4. Beautiful bedlinen is a luxury and you really do get what you pay for. Thread count (number of threads in a square inch of fabric) isn't everything and other factors such as the quality of the raw cotton (firmness of yarn) and the way threads are woven comes into play. I love the softness and elegance of Cotton Sateen without the expense of Egyptian Cotton.

5. Your choice of Doona/Duvet is all to do with weight and seasons/climate, however your first choice is natural or non allergenic filling. The right choice of doona weight for your particular climate is essential to a good nights sleep. The weight of doona for a cool climate will be vastly different to that where winters are mild. Down doonas trap more air between clusters than feather fillings and are therefore warmer and incredibly light. The greater the percentage of down and the higher the quality of the down, the more you pay.

Yes, lots to think about ... however worth spending a little time to get it right.

milan furniture fair meets fashion week australia

I was spoilt for choice this week not knowing which to look at first ... the Vogue blog covering Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia or the Vogue Living report each day from the Milan Furniture Fair.

I was definitely more interested in Fashion Week's Street Style than endless images from the catwalk !

Meanwhile in Milan, my favourites included Missoni (top photo) combining daisies and its traditional zigzag (only seen on the ottoman on the left) and above, the fabulous brights from designer Paola Lenti.

It was all happening at Carriageworks in Sydney ... what a fabulous venue for Fashion Week (yes, with the exception of the parking).

More of Paola Lenti's collection 'In the Key of Colour'. The furniture is available through Dedece, Sydney.

Paola Lenti chose this fabulous Franciscan Monastery, complete with orchard and gardens, for the showing of their collection in Milan.

A touch of gold or gilt adds an element of warmth and style to any interior. It looks best I believe, where the palette of colours used is minimal or neutral.

There are no hard and fast rules for the placement of gilt mirrors except to say, the larger the better.

This palette of colours and textures works like a dream. Gilt ... furniture or mirrors, adds a touch of elegance ... or even faded glory !!

Crisp, stark white is not for the faint hearted. In fact most clients I work with shy away from white, on the basis that it is cold and uninviting !! I beg to differ ...

It is all about using it effectively and achieving the right balance.

A white interior looks its absolute best where there are timber floors ... of any shade or colour. It is the perfect balance, with the timber providing the warmth.

White on white is the ultimate in elegance ... and it is all about the texture. Try layering rough and smooth. I love the combinations of smooth white bedlinen and the texture of an antique marcella quilt or white linen loose covers on a sofa with silk velvet cushions.

Of course you can always weaken and do white with a hint of ...

And for something really luxe ... white with that touch of gilt. Oh so elegant !!

Working with white and its varying textures and tones will allow you to create a very sophisticated interior ... not always achievable with colour.

1. the footstool ... the perfect addition to any seating group but extremely practical in a bathroom ... as big as will fit the space without cluttering it.

2. this buttoned armchair works well anywhere ... lovely in the bedroom or as a pair in a quiet corner of a sitting room or study. I do love the idea of a pair of these (or one plus ottoman) in the corner of a large country kitchen ... for that quick cup of tea.

3. a buttoned chesterfield or even chaise is the ultimate ... anywhere, anytime. Looks fabulous in anything from an exquisite velvet to a vintage linen.

4. the rolled back armchair is a classic design that can be positioned in a classic or contemporary setting, depending on fabric ... I love the slightly higher version around a dining table.

5. these squishy daybeds as a pair, are perfect for that covered verandah with view of the garden ... just curl up with a book and throw rug.

Loulou's night spot is located inside Mark Birley's 5 Hertford Street ...the very exclusive membership club in Mayfair. Opening in the second half of 2012, the wild and wonderful interiors are by the acclaimed fashion designer Rifat Ozbek ... with a budget of 30 million pounds !!

The trend toward minimalist interiors is I hope on the wane, with the pendulum swinging back to that of warmth and comfort ... rooms that are inviting, lived in and have real character. Let your possessions provide the detail.

1. Display and use on a daily basis inherited pieces such as pretty porcelain or silver. Don't just store it in the attic or at the back of a cupboard.

2. Visit antique shops and markets to keep your eye out for vintage finds ... baskets, picture frames or collections of glass bottles to use as vases.

3. Collections of new or old books add character to any interior ... either in bookshelves or piles on coffee tables. You can go a step further by displaying them by colour.

4. Antique timber furniture of any period will always add warmth and texture. Often only one or two pieces are needed to make the difference in a very modern interior.

5. Choose a classic piece of antique furniture and recover it in a modern fabric.

It is the combination of old and new that gives character ... and it should be constantly evolving not created in a few weeks.

jasper conran ... from fashion to furnishings

British designer Jasper Conran has more than his share of flair. The son of designer and restaurateur Sir Terence Conran, he last year was appointed chairman of The Conran Shop, the design emporium started by his father in 1973. His aim ... to make the stores relevant again and he is already on the move. This is in addition to his existing empire which includes fashion ... couture and department store, luggage, spectacles and homewares. Oh yes, and he has created costumes for the Royal Ballet and English National Opera.

Just another string to his bow ... his fabric collection for Designers Guild ... new interpretations on classic suiting. Flannels and pinstripes in an elegant and restrained colour palette.

Jasper's background in fashion clearly influencing this collection in terms of both fabric choice, design and detailing.

I love the way these fabrics mix and match so easily ... very difficult to go wrong here. These suiting shades of charcoal and navy can be punctuated with a delicious olive spot or paisley silk (cushions at top) ... which remind me of a beautiful mens cravat.

It is all about that background in fashion !!!

10 favourites from 'design and decoration 2013' sydney

I was daunted at the thought of visiting Design and Decoration at Darling Harbour this week. This is the trade only exhibition which showcases the latest and greatest in design. One is usually confronted with a lot of not so good, to be sieved through in the hope of finding the gems. Not so this year ... not nearly as many exhibitors but lots of new and fabulous. I have to say my favourite stand was the one above .. well done Crowley and Grouch.

I fell upon this fabric supplier who exhibited the most beautiful range of linen fabrics, both printed and plains ... from Sth. Africa.

This furniture was extremely stylish, the designs just that little bit different ... such generous proportions. I do love stud trim on any piece of furniture !!

Excuse the out of focus images, however I was really on the run. Love both the ikat cushions, colours and the metal furniture very different to anything I have seen.

I first saw and loved similar lamps at Blakes Hotel in London in the late 80's. I have been trying to source or have made, this style for years ... very difficult to get the proportion just right, but here they are.

Yes, new industrial style furniture is here to stay ... and I am dying to use it somewhere.

Loved these lights. In fact the lighting was the standout of the event this year.

This very glamorous African tribal look was rather inspirational !!

Have wanted groupings of this classic wicker on our verandah (to be moved out into the garden for autumn lunches) for years but never time to make it happen !! This was so reasonably priced that I wondered why I hadn't just got on with it.

For those of you who read my blog on peacock bedheads, you will be amused to see that I have found another supplier. This colourfully painted (to order) cane furniture was divine .. particularly the oriental style bookshelves. I do have a soft spot for the classic cane armchair and ottoman in the foreground.

Texture is a very important element in any interior however it is even more relevant when working with a neutral colour palette. The texture becomes the focal point.

When glancing at Wallpaper magazines 2013 High Altitude, the latest in ski resorts, I was struck by the impact of fabulous texture in varying forms. This was the key element in all these interiors ... timber, stone, rustic furnishings and fabric in contrast with the icy surround.

There is unlimited scope for the introduction of texture ... wall finishes, floor and ceiling finishes, furniture, floor coverings and of course fabrics.

The use of texture or the juxtaposition of different textures will bring a balance to the visual appeal and comfort of an interior ... more often than not it brings warmth and sense of wellbeing.

Introducing texture into your rooms can be as simple as:

1. Roughly textured jute or sisal rugs on smooth polished floors

2. Velvet and silk cushions on a linen sofa

3. Cashmere throw rugs draped over crisp cotton bedlinen

4. A collection of beautiful shells or pebbles in an all white bathroom

1. White cane is a beautiful contrast in any tropical garden setting. What could be smarter than navy and white cushions. I imagine frangipani or hibiscus for that splash of exotic colour.

2. Wide verandahs lend themselves to both casual lounge and dining settings depending on your style of entertaining. This reminds me very much of the house my mother grew up in Brisbane, where the verandahs were used extensively as an escape from the summer heat. 5 design tips for turning your small spaces into grand spaces

1. Using the same floor material or shade of flooring throughout will unify your spaces and create the illusion of space.

2. Keep your colour scheme simple and calm. Again, use of the same colours throughout will unify and magnify the space.

3. Storage is critical in small apartments/rooms. Create additional storage and bookshelves where possible by boxing out recesses. Clutter makes a room appear smaller. Disguise doors to storage cupboards where you can. Split a door into a pair of doors which intrude less into the space.

4. Choose furniture which is both moveable and multi-functional. Combine a couple of feature pieces with other furniture that recedes or blends with the wall colour. Avoid too many contrasts and patterns in a small room. Surprisingly, an oversized picture or piece of furniture can create impact along with the feeling of grandeur.

5. The tried and true use of mirrors and even better mirrored walls, always works a treat in small spaces. Try mirrored splashbacks in the kitchen to introduce light and expand the space. Allow for maximum flexibility with your lighting. Dimmers on all switches will allow for that ever important change of mood and focus.

marimekko ... all the fun and colour of summer

I have such fond memories of my marimekko curtains and bedspread, back in the day ... it was the 70's of course. They were fabulous shades of bright green with large orange tulips. The look extended to green heart sheets and a gorgeous white peacock bedhead ... all put together by my very stylish mother.

Brisbane was all the richer for Joy de Gruchy and The Craftsman's Market, a design studio that stocked Marimekko and put Brisbane on the map. I have adored Marimekko in a nostalgic sort of way ever since.

How exciting to have our own Marimekko in Sydney ... looking resplendent in the wonderful store in King Street. The colour is breathtaking and the space full of light !! Bolts of signature marimekko fabric, fashion and homewares.

I couldn't help but pass on my source for peacock bedheads to complete the picture ... The Family Love Tree.

The Langham Hotel, London ... just a short stroll from Oxford Street, Regent Street and Marylebone High Street ... shops, shops and more shops. This is a very stylish hotel in a fabulous location.

I love the warmth and attention to detail in all the rooms ... from the entry level Classic Rooms to Grand Junior Suite. There are of course larger suites, however I simply can't imagine needing anything larger than the gorgeous Grand Junior suite ... particularly when you are out and about shopping and exploring all day.

I think what I love most is the interesting use of colour throughout ... both elegant and adventurous, to say the least. I don't know why all hotels don't do doona's/duvet's ... they are just so inviting. Well actually I do know why. Changing covers still remains a nightmare for housemaids. (Have to say I find it a challenge and only have a couple to do at any one time.)

Lovely to know there is the traditional Palm Court to return to for Tea after all that shopping ... or the Artesian for a cocktail before dinner. I do love the exotic Orientalism !!!

A stay at The Langham would not be complete without a stroll through Regent's Park or a visit to the Wallace Collection (also fabulous Tearoom).

My philosophy for Christmas decorating inside or out ... keep it simple, less is more and think elegance above all else !!

Colour is fine, however work with the one theme or colour palette. It is always a good idea to give some thought or reference back to your existing interior or exterior colour scheme when choosing the colours for your decorations.

Regent Street in London is the benchmark for Christmas decorations as far as I am concerned ... and the bar is always set extremely high !!! This is Christmas 2012 and it does not disappoint.

I love the way the smaller street around Regent and Oxford Street have their own theme ... Sth Molton, Carnaby etc.

Oxford Street ... what fun ... and I haven't even started on the ice skating in Hyde Park or at the Courtauld Gallery as yet.

Well that is London and we are here in Sydney. I am so looking forward to my week finalising Christmas shopping, catching up with friends for some Christmas cheer and reporting on just how festive Sydney is looking Christmas week ... watch this space !!

Parterre Garden is celebrating 25 years in the business of bringing beautiful pieces large and small for house and garden into our lives. The shop is exquisite. Always another shipment arriving ... always another piece to fall in love with.

There is something rather festive about chandeliers. I adore the ones with the small shades and am always drawn to these first. Just when one is giving thought to dressing the house and table for Christmas ... oh for a pair of these. Perfect for the Christmas table ... along with your finest silver, glassware and china.

I imagine garlands and wreaths ... white hydrangeas and creamy gardenias.

More of this to come ... but we do have our tree up, looking resplendent, so that is a start.

For those of you who have followed my blog ... you will know exactly where my beach escape is ... and those that know the queensland beach scene will pick it, however I would prefer not to divulge the location ... too good to share. My mind keeps drifting back to the simplicity of the beach holiday ... so thought I would share my idea of 'essential beach holiday living'.

It is worth getting up early before the heat takes hold, for a stroll along the beach. So many shells, jelly fish and even coconuts believe it or not, that have washed in over night with the high tide.

Having worked up an apetite it is back for breakfast ... a bowl filled with all the tropical fruit you can get your hands on ... so ripe and full of flavour ... probably grown not far away. Even the local yoghurt tastes better than the one at home.

Must get to the beach early to beat the sun. I am always shocked at the heat in the queensland sun and wonder how I survived growing up in it.

Very few people on the beach mid week but bracing ourselves for the weekend crowd ... actually I think we will be ready for a bit more action by then.

One last dip in the 24 degree water before heading for the best coffee you can find ... and we had that sorted very early in the week. Preferably somewhere with a cooling breeze !!!

Home for a bite of lunch ... size depending on what was consumed with coffee. By now I am ready for a browse through the copious numbers of magazines I brought with me ... not to mention the book I can't put down (My Week With Marilyn by Colin Clark). Have to say the sea air is soporific !!! Not much reading gets done at all.

By late afternoon I am ready for another dip if the weather hasn't changed ... otherwise a browse at the shops is fun. I do always manage to find the perfect sundress or the like. These purchases never seem to look quite as good when I get home. Particularly as the holiday 'glow' fades.

Nothing left to do now ... apart from an aperitif on the balcony watching the twinkling lights and listening to the rolling surf. It doesn't get much better than this.

This rug is very special ... that extra dimension which may have something to do with the fact that Madeline is also an established painter.

Always fabulous contemporary designs and heirloom quality. Start thinking about what a rug could do to bring your room alive or tie it together with just the right colours. A rug can be the focal point of the room ... with everything else played down or pared back in terms of colour and design. Give it some thought ... it may be the perfect touch before you start your Christmas entertaining.

While recharging the batteries last week with a week at the beach, I had the luxury of both starting a new book and devouring as many magazines as I could get my hands on. Fuelled with inspiration and ideas to share, I was then promptly stopped in my tracks ... technical problems ... the blog was clearly not going to happen from up there. After my initial melt down, I came to the conclusion that it was probably a good thing and maybe I was meant to actually have a holiday.

Anyhow, here I am in my new laid back state of mind ... sharing with you some of what caught my eye as I perused. The Como Hotel in Melbourne (boutique hotel in Sth Yarra)has been slowly and quietly, with doors still open, refurbishing. Very much of the moment, this unusual combination of colours is elegant and very clever. I have always loved chocolate brown with duck egg blue and aubergine ... but oh that punch of citrus is gorgeous !!

Pure indulgence !!

PS. I think there is something quite luxurious about these deeply buttoned ottomans.

This is the time of year to spruce up the weekend wardrobe in readiness for that casual entertaining in the lead up to the silly season. Well actually that season is upon us now. I always give J. Crew a casual glance to get my eye in for the latest look instore. A trip to Zara is just as good ... particularly Bondi Junction in Sydney which is slightly more elegant and easier to navigate than the city store.

Feel I am giving away trade secrets here, however not everyone has success with this look. I personally love this smart, with a touch of glamour look .... yes I am drawn to the little jacket with the weather we are having at the moment. Don't get me wrong ... this is not the look for the Christmas party, Christmas drinks or even Christmas day. You will need something far more festive for those occasions. This is just for 'popping in for a casual drink with friends on a Sunday afternoon' or 'meeting your girlfriend for a glass of champagne at the local wine bar before Christmas !!

PS. To all my friends in the rag trade ... I am no fashion guru ... just know what I like. Maybe it is all in the fabrics and colours ... more my expertise !!

Everything Coco Republic does is stylish however the Timothy Oulton launch during the week was above and beyond. Right from the moment I saw the shiny black London cab filled with vintage luggage and masses of red roses I knew this was going to be special.

It was extremely special hearing from the man himself... inspired by the classic antiques of the past, however reconceived from a contemporary perspective.

Timothy Oulton's collection is all about authenticity, traditional techniques and creating pieces that are cutting edge design, relevant today.

Summer is nearly here ... but not quite. We do have to live through the overcast and stormy days of November and December first. Yes we do get a little taste of sunshine here and there but not for long. Just when we are dying to leap into a bit of outdoor entertaining, pop into that floaty sundress ... even a trip to the beach. The only consolation at the moment is that nobody has the time for any of the above. The end of the year is fraught with breakup parties, christmas parties and the dreaded christmas shopping. I guess what I really mean is 'bring on January'.

When I first saw this setting I immediately fell in love with it. It could be part of a bedroom or living room or work equally as well in a sunroom, outdoor room or conservatory ... light, bright ... somewhere you want to spend time ... just you.

It is all about having ones favourite possessions at hand to set the scene .... a new book or magazine to start, elegant stationary and pen to write a letter or even better ... your first novel.

An essential part of the scene is of course, the tea tray and fresh flowers.

This scene works summer or winter ... I can picture myself curled up under a cashmere rug in a sunny corner or with soft linen curtains billowing in the cool summer breeze.

Oh what a joy to have such a divine little shop in the Southern Highlands. Once renowned for all things stylish and smart the beautiful Highlands has had little to offer in the way of boutique shopping of late.

The Southern Highlands has seen the likes of Belinda Seper, Peter Chadwick, Jan Weekes and many others, open wonderfully stylish shops ... sadly, no longer. This is the sort of boutique shopping that Sydneysiders with weekenders in the Highlands, crave.

Anyhow, back to Baroque Flowers ... it isn't all about flowers ... the shop is full of decorative items such as urns, baskets, glassware and one off antique furniture pieces that compliment the flowers .... and draw you through the door.

Vanessa is a very clever florist/stylist who creates not only fabulous flowers but beautiful vignettes within this tiny space. She puts together unusual combinations of flowers and foliage, both strikingly bold and pretty, rustic and classic. There is always a surprise element.

Anouska Hempel has done it again with La Suite West, a luxurious boutique hotel in a beautiful part of London.

Inverness Terrace is just to the north of Hyde Park's Kensington Gardens.

I have spoken before of her first beautiful boutique hotel in London, Blakes. There have been other hotels in the meantime, however for me, La Suite West combines the best of them all.

There is something in the way Anouska Hempel places cushions, her lamps in the restaurant, the symmetry of the potted plants in the garden or art on the wall ... she has a signature style ... and it all started with Blakes.

The combination of sleek lines, an asian influence in the detailing and yes .. the symmetry, works beautifully in this elegant London Victorian terrace.

Her very smart colour palette of 'black and white' is complimented by the extensive use of luxurious marble and timber finishes and fine detailing.

the country trader, sydney ... not just furniture

Recently I was faced with the task/fun of finding gorgeous bits and pieces to turn a recently refurbished country cottage into a 'home'. As pleased as I was with the initial result ... it still lacked something.

I had a flash and remembered the Country Trader ... normally known for stylish furniture both old and new. They now have lots and lots of interesting glassware, silver, tortoiseshell, baskets and candles ... affordable accessories for the home and table.

Just as you walk in it resembles a fabulous bazaar. I was thrilled to find decorative jugs, platters and baskets for the kitchen ... in particular, I loved the vintage linen napkins. For the coffee table and bookshelves I fell upon lovely old sets of books, rustic tins and candlesticks.

With everything now in place, I must say the cottage is looking much less like a house and more a home ... full of character and interest. It was a lot of fun searching for and eventually finding just the right pieces !!

What a delight to discover that the ground floor of David Jones, Sydney has undergone refurbishment and is now more glamorous than ever. The style and elegance of the David Jones we all remember is certainly back and just in time for Christmas. I was immediately drawn to the beautiful Jo Malone, London .... yes I do think it is the packaging .... their iconic cream with black edging.

And to think it all started in 1994 with her first little shop in Walton Street, London. Her personal fragrances and delicious scented candles soon became the brand everyone had to have. By 1999 Jo Malone had launched her flagship store in London's Sloane Street. That same year she was taken over by Estee Lauder. Jo remained at the helm as chairwoman and creative director until 2006.

I was thrilled to discover only recently that Jo has launched a new fragrance company - Jo Loves. She told Vogue "Fragrance is absolutely what I love so I'm excited to be back. This new brand is all about memories - it's where I am and the person I am now."

Jo Loves is available online (sadly no shipping to Australia) ... with stores opening soon (probably UK first).

designers guild .... trimmings and tiebacks

It's all in the finishing touch .... the detail, the icing on the cake. Who could resist when you have trimmings as gorgeous as these from Designers Guild to play with. They are as enticing as candy.

Be brave .... start with trims on cushions. It is a way of pulling together various elements in a room into a coherent scheme. By picking up the curtain colour in choice of trims on cushions, for example, you immediately bring it all together. Choose curtain tiebacks that incorporate the shades in upholstery.

Trims can certainly add a touch of glamour however can also be frivolous and fun. Who doesn't love a bit of old fashioned bobble fringe !!

I have had an interesting but exhausting week in Sydney, doing the rounds of my suppliers in search of just the right pieces of furniture, lighting and decorative items to complete a current project. The excitement of finding the perfect piece followed by the frustration of not finding another. However, there is nothing quite like the elation and satisfaction of seeing it all come together at the end ... when it exceeds your expectation, when you take photos and when you receive the positive feedback from clients. It is even better when it exceeds their expectation as well.

In amongst all of that, I did hear on the grapevine that the North American giants ... Pottery Barn, West Elm and Williams-Sonoma are coming to Australia ... and opening under the one roof in Bondi Junction, Sydney. These retailers offer upmarket quality homewares .... however, sitting below Coco Republic, I imagine. These companies have not put a foot wrong to date ... and are now looking at global expansion.

I do feel for the smaller retail design establishments, particularly in the eastern suburbs, as this will take the town by storm and be a hard act to follow. Do have a look at the Pottery Barn website as a taste of what is to come .... it is just so extensive!!

jamie's italian ..... design that just keeps getting better

Jamie's Italian restaurants are opening all over the UK ... some 30 of them actually. Also Dubai, Singapore, Sydney and Perth. He has more recently collaborated with design company Blacksheep on their design. There seems to be a trend in restaurant design ... it is all about the sensory experience ... taking you to a place ... a country ... it's not just all about the food. The fitout is authentic in what they are trying to achieve. Justin Hemmes in Sydney is on a similar trajectory with each new restaurant he opens outdoing the last in authenticity ... think The Fish Shop and Mr Wong.

For Jamie it was all about the environment having the 'neighbourhood feel'. Taking inspiration from the Italian Table where one relaxes, shares and enjoys each others company.

This is modern italian over two levels with openness ... broken up into different spaces each with a different dining experience. I do love these vintage chairs from Tolix ... they are everywhere and so 'of the moment'. Every smart new restaurant and cafe has them ... in one form or another ... either vibrant colours or straight galvanized. They work in any interior ... slick, bistro or industrial street furniture. I love them and tracked them down at Thonet, Sydney.

In the fabulous gallery space beside the iconic Yellow building (and once Yellow cafe) Arida have opened their new Arida Gallery. This is a delectable combination of the fashion we have come to know and expect of Arida and exotic homewares, furniture and antiques, large and small.

All just a little bit different .... classic but not !!

Couldn't help but think how appropriate it all was for the Potts Point clientele and inner city apartment living.

5 things you should know about kilim rugs

1. Kilim rugs with their flat weave (or no pile) seem to sit particularly well in almost any modern interior .... rustic, contemporary, city or country, sitting room, kitchen or even bathroom.

2. Their geometric designs are available in a range of colour tones. Kilims add warmth, fabulous colour and a distinct personality to any neutral interior.

3. Finding a kilim to compliment any scheme or interior is not all that difficult. From recent experience most rug dealers have a number of kilims to look at.

4. The older kilims have the more subtle colours and their size tends to be more rectangular than square.

5. There is a trend now for kilims to be used as upholstery or cushions. I love this look. Not sure how I feel about the patchwork kilims ....

PS. Don't forget a good underlay ... they do tend to move.

Navy is heaven .... and the only thing smarter than navy and white is 'stone' (better than cream) and white ..... anywhere anytime.

Just love the simplicity of Margaret Howell.

Paul Smith does it again. I use Paul Smith colours (his patterns, trims and jacket lining) as often as I can .... as accent colours in interior schemes .... cushions etc. These colours always look fabulous with black, navy, cream and white.

You can pick the striking patterns and colours of Mary Katrantzou's collection at a glance .... fabulous for the one off designer piece of furniture.

Pringle of Scotland .... subtle texture, pattern and classic lines ....

london design festival 2012 sweeps the city

Team Wallpaper have captured the essence of The London Design Festival 2012 with their people combing the width and breadth of London in search of all that is new ... launches, installations and exhibitions everywhere !!

These are a few of the standouts for me .... designer Lee Broom above and below, transformed his studio into an old grocery store complete with timber panelling, wooden crates, sawdust on the floor and 200 crystal bulbs. I adore the juxtaposition of the glamorous crystal bulb hanging on your basic cord .... in a rustic grocery shop ... absolutely divine.

This elegant stacked desk by Rolf Sach for Linley again is a contradiction ... the extremely refined workmanship (no nails or screws) ... with the design based on the concept of stacking timber to dry.

I adore this high back reading chair by Amos Marchant for Lloyd Loom. I can picture this in any number of exotic locations !!

While on wicker ... these lights by The Andes House are fabulous ... singular or as a group ... I am loving the warm glow.

Described as the Shoreditch end of the City of London ... this is the part of London where it is all happening. Every new bar, restaurant and hotel that I read a review of, seems to be in this locale.

The very smart Conran designed guestrooms appeal to both business and leisure travellers.

The first hotel venture by the D&D London group, this hotel has 80 guestrooms, two elegant restaurants, three bars (one secret garden bar), roof top terrace and sponsors its own art prize !!!

paper passion .... perfume for booklovers

Another find in Wallpaper magazine ... source book for the very best in design. A collaboration between German publisher Gerhard Steidl and perfumer Geza Schoen, with packaging and name chosen by Karl Lagerfield .. the scent of a freshly printed book, Paper Passion. I have to admit I can't really imagine wearing this scent as a perfume !!!

Schoen .... iconoclastic perfumer specialising in conceptual scents

Steidl ... the publisher of high end art and photography books

Lagerield .... with a passion for fashion, art and music. His vision, a real book with pages and cut out for the perfume bottle.

The book does include essays on the subject of paper by each of those involved including Wallpaper Editor-in-Chief, Tony Chambers.

Available online, in selected concept stores, bookshops and perfumeries across the world. I look forward to tracking this down, it has me intrigued ... how appealing is the scent of a freshly printed book and would you actually wear it as a perfume.

What a spectacular entrance to this annual event at David Jones, Sydney. I love the reference to the spring fashion direction with their theme 'fleuressence'.

Having said that ... I am not sure that I can embrace the whole fleuro fashion statement ... maybe a scarf.

However ... the idea of bringing fleuro into the home as summer approaches is a fun concept. It need only be a vibrant cushion, vase, platter, towels or flowers !!

Each year, the ground floor of David Jones is transformed into a floral fantasy for the start of Spring. I have such fond memories of the trip into the city with the express purpose of viewing the 'David Jones Spring Flowers' and can't recall ever being disappointed.

The exhibition everyone is talking about .... Chanel's The Little Black Jacket.

This project by Chanel's creative director Karl Lagerfield, along with former Paris Vogue editor- in-chief Carine Roitfeld, made its debut in Tokyo .... gathering force as it swept on to New York, Taipei and Hong Kong. Next stop London .... (the Saatchi Gallery of course) and Moscow !!

Coco once said "fashion isn't just present in dresses ... fashion is in the air, it's borne by the wind, we sense it, we breathe it, it's in the sky and on the tarmac, it's everywhere, it comes from ideas custom, events ..."

10 tips for a spring makeover

1. It is all about de-cluttering ... possibly even a spring clean. The first hint of colour again in the garden is usually enough to get you going.

2. Bring spring inside with bulbs planted into pretty containers ... vases filled with bunches of freshly picked daffodils or branches of blossom.

3. Cast off those woollen throw rugs and replace with cotton knits ... think faded chintzes, a softer or neutral palette of linens, cottons and canvas.

4. Loose covers give a lighter feel to furniture with winter weight fabrics. The solution is to have two sets of loose covers ... winter and summer.

5. Buy a new set of crisp white bedlinen or at the very least new pillow slips to smarten up the bedroom.

6. Longer daylight hours and spring sunshine mean entertaining ... plan a meal around new season produce. Smarten up the outdoor furniture and make or purchase a new outdoor cloth.

7. Apply the less is more principle ... spring is all about fresh air rather than cosiness. A more dramatic move might be to remove curtains so you can enjoy the view.

8. Stand back and look at your rooms with a fresh eye. A change in accent colour can lighten your look ... simply change cushion covers, tablecloths and other decorative items. Group items with similar colours.

9. Splash out on new towels and bath mat in fresh spring colours or even better white on white. New tea towels in checks and stripes will give the kitchen a new lease of life.

10. Think about a change of room fragrance and scented candles.

I do associate it with exotic rooms in rambling historic houses and castles.

Whether traditional or a slightly more contemporary take on it .... it oozes character and looks divine in any colourway.

Yes I did go in search of Laduree this week, however in vain I am afraid. It will be situated in Westfield in the Sydney CBD ... Level 3. To my disappointment it appears that it will be situated in an external space (think walkway)... similar to the area used for the pop up champagne bar at Christmas. I had hoped for a gorgeous little cafe along the lines of the one in Paris (Left Bank).

So far we have a designated space and sign. Hopefully it will open soon and surely it will be as beautiful as we are all anticipating.

I will keep you posted !!

dreaming of warmer weather and summer holidays .... corsica would be nice

Nothing like reading Garance Dore's latest blog about her holiday in Corsica to pick you up. Especially when the wind is howling and temperatures freezing in the Southern Highlands. It is about now that I start to get itchy feet. Longing for the warmth, the sun, the summer clothes ... for a start.

I just love this interview with Aurelie ... hearing all about her summer essentials. It does get you in the mood ... her Liberty print shorts for summer on the Mediterranean (made for her in Paris of course), her Gap cargo pants and white T shirt but best of all, her divine vintage white peasant blouse above. Have noted the white Acne skinny jeans and Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunnies as essentials and are on the list already.

Have also done my research on Corsica ... only 1.5 hours by plane from Paris or by ferry from Tuscany 2.5 hours. All very achievable once over there ... there being Europe, the centre of the universe. Well it is for me, sitting here at the extremity !!

The photo above, is one of my favourites. It captures a moment !! I can feel the heat coming off the sand as I lie under the shade of the cabana. Oh yes and the water would be the perfect temperature as well.

Meanwhile back in the Highlands ......

I first heard about container homes and the creative things people were doing with them, a few years ago. I listened with great interest ... fascinated to think of the challenge and the potential !!

All they require are windows and doors...of any size or proportion and a coat of paint.

They can be joined together side by side or on top of each other ....

Somehow they suddenly become a design statement ..... minimalist and state of the art. I just love the way they seem to nestle into their environment.

Another week flashes by, the Olympics have come and almost gone .... nothing is forever it seems. When I read this news of the beautiful and iconic Hermes with its strong (and long) family history, I did hope nothing was about to change.

Every girl should own at least one Hermes scarf (or even better two). Beautiful and stylish women all over the world have been photographed wearing theirs ... think Grace ... Jackie and probably Audrey.

So many ways to wear them ... so much fun to be had ... the perfect accessory !!!

sydney boutique hotel ... style and location

For some time I have tried in vain to find somewhere super stylish for overseas friends and colleagues to stay while in Sydney. I have written about so many gorgeous places in the Uk and Europe but struggled to find anywhere in Sydney that excites. That was until I was taken by a friend to see the Harbour Rocks Hotel, tucked away, yet right in the heart of Sydney's historic Rocks precinct.

This is one of the early buildings in the Rocks .... possibly one of the many bond stores. The architects and designers have captured the feel with exposed sandstone, bricks, and beams .... the entrance sets the scene. Set back from the street one enters through large black doors .... what awaits is more stylish than could be imagined. The lighting, the bookshelves and the gorgeous Gervasoni seating in the Lobby give one the feeling that they have arrived somewhere quite special.

Reception is discreet .... in fact it is an extension of the Bar. I think what works so beautifully is the scale of the spaces. These spaces and finishes have an inherent warmth and glow ... all so very inviting.

Guestrooms are simple and elegant, yet cosy. The finishes and furniture stylish. Yes, it is the attention to detail that you don't find large hotels.

This restaurant is beautiful !!!! The lighting is perfect. The clean and simple lines of these chairs and texture of the banquette seating .... a lovely juxtaposition with the sandstone.

I guess it was always going to be easy once you inherit the bones of this magnificent building. Not so easy to get it this right and they have.

I will certainly be finding an excuse to book in for a weekend. The location is a gem and I look forward to exploring the Rocks (not just for tourists now), spending time at the Museum of Contemporary Art, walking round to the Opera Bar to enjoy the sunset and a glass of prosecco and trying some of the many fabulous new restaurants and coffee shops in this part of the world.

We eagerly watched as very smart chocolate brown, heavily panelled doors were installed. What was going to open in this tiny little space in Macleay Street, Potts Point ?

Coffee tea and me sounded familiar ... yes they have an even smaller outlet in Redfern. While Redfern is rustic to the max, their new cafe in Potts Point is stylishly rustic. Shades of Argentina I felt !!

Cute seating options and only a couple of tables but fabulously welcoming.

Very good Campos coffee which isn't normally a favourite. Excellent bagels and terrific choice of sweet treats .... they really have the food side of things covered nicely .... simple, fresh and delicious.

Now this is innovative !!! and I just fell in love with the newspaper holders below.

There is definitely a place for this little cafe in Potts Point .... coffee capital of Sydney.

olympic viewing at sydney's iconic kings cross hotel

Not sure which was more exciting .... sitting up on Level 1 right opposite the famous Coca Cola sign .... so Hollywood !!! or the size of the screen we were watching the Olympics on.

Such an iconic part of Sydney perched at the top of William Street .... not to mention the Kings Cross Hotel itself with its colourful history. It's current configuration does not disappoint.

After a weekend glued to the television watching the Olympics it was fun to be out .... still watching the Olympics but with others ... all cheering for Australia.

I am sitting here in Sydney full of Olympic Spirit .... no not in London !!! Tickets scarce and crowds crazy, so very happy to travel when London returns to normal. However should I be over there, I have decided that the Firmdale Hotel Group do have the most exciting properties to choose from .... and in all the right locations .... Covent Garden, Haymarket, Soho, Knightsbridge, South Kensington and my favourite Dorset Square. What could be more divine than this Regency terrace overlooking a leafy square.

Kit Kemp loves colour and plays with fabric in a very adventurous way. Each property is unique ... in fact, each guestroom is unique, from what I can see. She combines slick contemporary with traditional pieces and details, very brave indeed.

Firmdale call it 'fresh contemporary English style". I have to say that I have not always been sure that it all works but looking at the newest addition in Dorset Square I have been won over. Either my taste has changed or I have taken time to 'just get it'.

I acknowledge they are quirky, however the attention to detail is exceptional, the furniture and furnishings are beautiful and I am sure the experience would be pure 5 star.

Dorset Square is where I would be staying ... just a short walk to Marylebone High Street, an area I love with its gorgeous shops and cafes ... oh so civilised compared to the rat race of Oxford Street not so far away.

Would love some feedback on any of the Firmdale properties ....

I love this fashion shoot by Tim Walker for Mulberry ... I also love this wild colour !!! Fabulous in winter. Do look at the Mulberry Blog ... it is worth subscribing to. Great way keep up to date. I first discovered Mulberry in Harvey Nichols in London in the early 80's and have been addicted ever since. I am also a regular visitor to the Mulberry store in Westfield CBD which, by the way, has a very good sale each season.

weekend woollens in the highlands

Another wet and cold weekend in the highlands. Whatever has happened to our sunny winter days and crystal blue skies. My memories of winter are those of finding a sunny spot in the garden to sit with a tray ... pot of tea, a slice of boiled fruit cake and papers to read ... absolute bliss. Not this year !! I watch from the window as the first sign of bulbs appear under the trees and yearn for Spring. Even our sasanqua camellias have rebelled with very few blossoms on show. I am looking for a lot more colour with the Japonica's.

Instead we are cosying up inside with woolly blankets, throw rugs and open fires.

I do love the old fashioned check blankets and seek them out in antique shops. I found some gorgeous ones at out local antique emporium that had come from Scotland ... such interesting colours and so homely. More than anything I love a blanket stitch edge. Even more homespun !!

Cath Kidston does wonderful things with vintage blankets ... she makes cushions with them and even covers wing back chairs with one or a number of check blankets in patchwork . They look fabulous.

Maybe our cold wet winter will inspire some of these creative activities ... in the meantime I will just bring out that scarf that I started to knit last year but didn't finish. No doubt Monday morning will bring the sun !!

The Hotel Lancaster in Paris is without doubt the prettiest hotel in Paris. An extremely chic boutique hotel .... is this not just exactly what one would expect when we think of Parisian style.

I adore the simple, pared back elegance which allows the architecture to shine.

This is the most sophisticated use of colour .... so subtle, yet only for the brave. Shades of lavender, lilac and aubergine teamed with shades of grey, crisp white and hint of gold .... how divine ! Not as easy as it looks to achieve the perfect balance.

I have always loved the tile and marble combination in a bathroom ... somehow it creates character. It is so much more interesting than head to toe marble which is an easier option by far. How decadent to have your own dressing table and in the bathroom... only in Paris !!

This interior is timeless ... classic and contemorary all rolled into one. Their collection of artworks and antiques complimented graciously by the sumptuous colour palette and subtle attention to detail.

Having said all that, how inviting does that sofa look. Perfect for putting your feet up after a day shopping in Galeries Lafayette.

I knew I was going to fall in love with this hotel when I spotted those lavender grey striped awnings and gorgeous flower boxes.

christian liaigre ... the detail

I have admired the work of Christian Liaigre since staying in the beautiful Hotel Montalembert in Paris in the early 90's. This hotel interior showcased his style and attention to detail ... it was also very glamorous in a subtle and elegant way.

The next time I became aware of his work was when he combined with Herbert Ypma in the creation of a book about his latest residential projects 'MAISON'. This book captures photographically every detail of some eight projects around the world ... emphasising the consistency of his work but most importantly the appropriateness.

I read where he believes in the old adage that there are no great designers, only great clients. Never a truer word spoken. According to Ypma, Liaigre redefined 'modern' when a modern interior was white walls and blonde timber .... Liaigre worked with dark timber and masculine colour palette of creams browns and greys.

This is how Liaigre chooses to live ... on the left bank in Paris ... his favourite period of design, the 18th century. Unusual given his minimalist interiors. He does explain that the 18th century was when there was the most creation ... how could they do so much baroque and yet keep it coherent. He feels it is coming back into fashion and manages to blend the extremes with his contemporary pieces from his own collection.

I love his work with a passion but am not sure I love this exact choice of furniture. What do you think.

wimbledon weekend

How will we ever go on after the excitement of Wimbledon is over !! Oh well not long till the Olympics and more London fever.

The views of London in the full flight of summer are always soooo enticing.

The uniforms by Ralph Lauren so very stylish. Unlike other years however, the players didn't provide a lot of excitement in the fashion stakes.

Blue skies at last after all that rain ... what a wet and soggy summer England is having. Thank goodness for the magical closing of the roof. I do love scanning the crowd for famous faces and the fashion ... well Kate and Pippa mainly.

Strawberrries and cream are synonymous with Wimbledon. This little selection of Wimbledon food equally as suitable for those watching the final at home.

Serena Williams is now Wimbledon champion for the 5th time and what a fabulous match. My money is on Federer this evening but the Men's final is only a matter of hours away !!!

By the time you are reading this ... the 2012 Men's Singles winner will have his name on the trophy.

I simply adore this bedhead .... it is a beautiful and elegant shape, classic, stylish and not over the top. Quite often I do bedheads with bronze stud detail ..... it is simple and just enough detail. I do laugh when I see this style of woven wallpaper in showrooms ... I inherited a sitting room with this paper some 15 years ago when it was not so fashionable and paid a small fortune to have someone strip it off. My husband does remind me of this on occasions when we come across it looking fabulous. I am always clever enough not to point it out but do secretly love it now .... particularly when used like this.

What can I say other than I am very much looking forward to the weekend .... lingering leisurely over my coffee rather than bolting it down in haste as I snatch a few moments to rewrite my list of things to do and places to go. I do however, make sure my hasty coffee is always a particularly good one. I plan my route around Sydney based on known, tried and true cafe's both old and new.

Givenchy as always ... the colour, the detail, the cut .... pure elegance !!!

The House of Christian Lacroix, synonymous with the flamboyant and glamorous world of Paris and London is led by creative genius Sacha Walkhoff. He has been second in command to Lacroix for some seventeen years yet this is their first home furnishing fabric collection .... and it just happens to be for Designers Guild.

The first successful collection 'Arles' has now been followed by 'Air de Paris'. These collections comprise fabulous and adventurous fabric, wallpaper and accessories.

I love Walckhoff's description of the new collection as ' the story of many journeys .... the journey of one woman from Arles to her new home in Paris .... in the journey we pick up mementos en route and reference to iconic elements...'

The city's largest contemporary art event, the Biennale of Sydney, is currently happening at some very exciting locations around the harbour and inner city.

Major venues include the newly redeveloped Museum Of Contemporary Art Australia, World Heritage listed former shipyard and prison, Cockatoo Island and Pier 2/3 in Walsh Bay. For those who haven't visited the MCA yet, this is the time to do it .... and for me, I am fascinated at the thought of the ferry trip to Cockatoo Island.

According to co-artistic director Gerald McMaster 'We've selected artists who often cross disciplinary boundaries, artists who enjoy collaborating and some who work with unusual media .... those who look to their cultural heritage, those who connect with the spiritual and aesthetic and those with a love of the natural world'.

This event from 27 June until 16 September, 2012 presents more than 220 works by over 100 artists from around the world .... the latest in contemporary art right here on our doorstep ... our very beautiful doorstep.

Very exciting to discover the refurbished Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon at Fortnum and Mason.

Designer David Collins has created a beautiful environment to sip tea or bubbly and enjoy the delicacies .... a tradition synonymous with Fortnum's.

Since the opening up of the Far East for trade from the west, Fortnum and Mason have sourced the finest teas .... making a choice is the difficulty.

The fourth floor was always home to the St James restaurant ... now one can enjoy the elegant Georgian surroundings of the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon.

Tea will arrive at your table with a timer that will ring once to indicate that it has reached the perfect brewing time !! and accompanied by the perfect delicate sandwiches and cakes .... linger and enjoy.

I fell in love with these images as soon as I saw them however just couldn't help but wish all hotel rooms felt this inviting. It seems that no matter how much money one pays for that touch of luxury, hotel rooms do seem a little lacklustre. Yes it is the finishing touches .... flowers, candles, magazines and the extra scatter cushions .... and yes I have spoken about it before. For any number of reasons this is the area that seems to have been eliminated from either the brief or the budget or both. Therefore it is the boutique hotel with the fastidious attention to this sort of detail that we seek out .... the hotels that appear in glossy magazines and coffee table books.

These images show the beautiful Plaza Athenee in Paris .... a stylists dream ....miles of silk curtaining, elegant panelling and architectural detail, glamorous chandelier and sumptuous furniture. Why aren't all hotel rooms filled with armfuls of fully blown roses, french champagne on ice and fragrant room candles !!!!

Hopewood Country House is open again for the Annual Stocktake Sale for French and Country and Suzie Anderson Home. It was gorgeous to visit at the weekend and also to know that it is on for 3 more days. So much to see and take in. Suzie is very clever with her styling ... every room delicious to look at ... all so tempting. There were none of the tell tale signs of a sale when I was looking.

The highlands are looking a picture ... Suzie's setting is particularly beautiful ... it is well worth popping in for a viewing or down from Sydney for the morning ... and you won't be disappointed in the delightful morning tea being served.

Scandinavian countries do white or pale interiors with great style. Both rustic and refined. Different shades of soft white, cream and grey ... each used exclusively creates an elegant retreat from the chaos of colour and pattern in everyday life.

White interiors accentuate architectural detail, texture ... and capture light. They have a purity .... like a crisp white shirt or a fluffy white bath towel.

There is a certain serenity to a white or pale interior. White provides the blank canvas from which to showcase beautiful furniture, artwork ... even the view from the window.

Regular inspiration from the Sartorialist is essential .... I love the fabrics and textures he captures .... and this plaid fabric is sumptuous.

His fashion on the street photography is gorgeous but often the streetscape itself can be equally as gorgeous. Think Milan, Paris, New York and London. It gives me my fix.

PS The fall and cut of this coat are worth a mention .... I guess it is Chloe.

Another wet weekend indoors .... the bonus being the time it has allowed me to peruse my inbox in slightly more detail than normal. In the process I was delighted to find that the latest Habitus Living online magazine had arrived. It's images of Sri Lanka's Amangalla I thought worth sharing.

I quickly became lost in the world of Old Ceylon and the grandeur of this retreat ... so very Aman.

Dating back to the 1600's these grand old structures have had a number of incarnations .... the New Orient Hotel, an icon in Galle and the hub for passengers from the P&O and Dutch East India Company vessels. In another life .... the Dutch governor's residence and army barracks.

The current Amangalla retreat captures it all .... large timber shutters on windows, wide timber floor boards, huge chandeliers hanging from the 6 metre ceilings, cord pull lights and the most fabulous and interesting solid timber furniture !! They certainly have captured an era .... so pared back and yet so elegant. My favourite pieces .... the gorgeous wicker recliners !!

They could so easily have thrown masses of colour into the interior .... very brave not to .... the vision being 'to allow the centuries-seasoned building's soul to shine'.

I have always had a fascination with Sri Lanka .... just to explore the different regions.... the beaches, the tea plantations .... and maybe even a visit to Amangalla.

laduree coming to sydney

The word is out .... the gorgeous Laduree is coming to Sydney .... supposedly in the Westfield Centre in the CBD. I first discovered this patisserie in Paris one Christmas and thought I was in heaven. I do hope they can recreate the opulence here in Sydney even if there isn't the architecture. I was encouraged to see a rather perfect Laduree in Harrods in London .... you would expect no less.

There is nothing quite as glamorous as an afternoon tea at Laduree. The interior itself is good enough to eat. The packaging .... the wrapping and ribbons .... the presentation .... and of course the macaron !!! I wonder if Sydney will do hot chocolate the way the French do .... absolute perfection.

The macaron are the most famous creation of Laduree .... created at the beginning of the 20th century by Pierre Desfontaines the second cousin of Louis Ernest Laduree who first thought of taking two macaron shells and joining them with a delicious ganache filling. Once cooked the macaron are put to one side for 2 days before going on sale .... according to Laduree, the time it takes to achieve the perfect balance between texture and flavour.

And the best bit .... each new season they create a new flavour ... the range of colours as important as the range of flavours and a vital part of their appeal. Rumour has it that a box of pastel coloured macaron from Laduree inspired Sofia Coppola, director of the film Marie Antoinette.

Do look at Laduree's very cute website .... it is enchanting .... and the history of this iconic Parisian teahouse fascinating.

PS. No macaron I have tasted elsewhere or since has lived up to my first in Paris !!

I am always searching for new and interesting homewares and decorative items as the finishing touch to interior projects I am working on .... the pieces that really bring a room to life.

Often it is the antique or rustic elements that will create the warmth and soften the most contemporary interior.... the juxtaposition of old and new.

La Croix in Potts Point is one of those places that you do need to pop into reasonably regularly. Browse amongst their collection sourced from Belgium and France .... furniture, lighting, mirrors, glassware and porcelain .... not a chore given that the shop and cafe are intertwined.

I have found they always have a lovely range of interesting platters, bowls and jugs .... from the very fine to a heavy marble .... and all in white and neutral tones, so easy to work with.

Without doubt my favourite find this week are the rustic timber lamps above with smart canvas shades. The pair of differing height will look fabulous on a sideboard or console. Probably no two bases are the same shape, which gives it a more eclectic feel.

The palette at La Croix is wonderfully neutral .... the space so glamorous with their use of antique mirrors and chandeliers. Just think .... you can ponder your purchases over a coffee and french pastry or even tartine.

stone houses and a weekend in the southern highlands

Yes another wet weekend in the highlands but it doesn't seem to have deterred the holiday makers and visitors ..... people everywhere .... impossible to even get a seat in a cafe.

Out of town, however, it is all very atmospheric .... misty rain and wintry landscape .... this is why people come to the highlands !!!

Driving through the countryside the many dry stone walls that this area is known for, are now more visible .... and seem to go on for miles.

I have always been drawn to houses made of stone .... and there are quite a few in the highlands. They just seem to nestle into the landscape.

On the inside, exposed stone works best with a soft neutral palette of creams, caramel and greys.

The use of timber whether it be natural, limed or painted ..... compliments or can contrast with the stone beautifully.

Apart from its beautiful texture, exposed stone has a warmth that brings an interior to life. If a whole house made of stone isn't possible .... maybe a stone fireplace and hearth is !!

kitchen inspiration....plain english kitchens

An enormous amount of energy goes into the design of a kitchen .... in my opinion the most difficult thing to achieve is the look and feel .... the finishes .... and how the kitchen will integrate with the design style of the house itself. I have had clients who find a kitchen they like and are set on replicating it irrespective of whether it suits the style of their home or not.

I was interested to see that the Plain English cupboardmakers have a portfolio that clearly reflects their signature design and quality, however shows how they adapt their look to suit a city, country or coastal feel as well as the period styles of Arts and Crafts, Queen Anne etc

In a new home and to an extent with a renovation, you can inject some uniformity between the kitchen and the remainder of the house by using the same design and style of joinery throughout bedrooms, bathrooms, laundries and other areas.

The mismatch between the kitchen and the rest of the house typically occurs when the back of a rather traditional house with small rooms is opened up to create one large living space with kitchen. The flow from old to new requires both careful planning and more importantly thought into the visual flow of finishes, colour, lighting and design detail.

Once you have that right, think of it as just furnishing another room of the house .... however its character and feel is probably more important than any other room .... given how many hours we spend in our kitchen/family rooms.

Winter is well and truly here if today is anything to go by. Temperatures have plummeted .... days are short .... and there is no place like a cosy home .... even better, with a glowing fire.

Home in winter means baskets of freshly cut wood and pine cones gathered on walks .... bowls of apples and pears .... the texture of wool, cashmere, corduroy, velvets and knits .... tartan throw rugs to curl up with or simply add warmth to the mood of the room.

When the weather is bleak enjoy time in the kitchen cooking up a storm .... indulge in the odd hot chocolate .... enjoy the scents of winter with collections of candles. A bare branch in a vase will compliment the more wintry tones .... bowls of camellias, a welcome splash of colour.

Yes the locals were sceptical when word went around about the closure of Lotus and a new venture by Merivale. Let's face it .... Lotus was best known for its glamorous cocktail bar, behind the restaurant. However a fish shop was a little off left field.

Well aren't we all just thrilled to have this fabulous local hangout now .... tried and true. Such a cute concept but more importantly it works. Perfect for the early drink and snack or substantial meal. Each corner has its own special feel and character. Personally I love the rustic timbered area around the bar, however like the idea of being seated at the counter overlooking the kitchen.

This place has a terrific vibe .... as far as I can see, capturing all age groups. When it first opened only a few weeks ago, and weather warmer .... you definitely got the feeling that people had wandered in on a Sunday afternoon after a day at the beach or on the harbour.

No I don't think it is kitsch .... the detail is fabulous !! Very clever in that it takes you away to another place altogether.

The atmosphere by 6pm was one of anticipation with the harbour foreshore between Circular Quay and the Opera House lined with photographers .... professional and amateur .... all waiting for the light show to begin. The haunting music began and the lights slowly lit up the city buildings, the museum of contemporary art and the opera house. There was hushed silence as people watched and waited for what was to come next .... quite different to the partying and revelry of New Years Eve fireworks. This was gorgeous, stylish, creative and sophisticated. There are simply not enough superlatives to describe it .... and that is just one location .... there are many.

I couldn't help but think how children would adore both the light show and the many "light artworks" .... there are over 60 light installations covering the harbour foreshore around to Walsh Bay. The night markets and Rocks Precinct is my next stop but really can't wait to get to the Opera Bar on a Friday night during Vivid Sydney for a glass of Prosecco and .... I am told fabulous music.

autumn in the southern highlands all but over

I was horrified to return to the beautiful Southern Highlands this weekend to find every jewel coloured leaf had been stripped from the trees in the space of a week. Gale force winds during the week had wreaked havoc !!

There is not one leaf remaining on our gorgeous trees. We have the perfect autumn garden and usually have the pleasure of weeks on end of autumn colour....not after the week we have just had....freezing conditions and wind.

I do have some wonderful photos which I have longingly looked back over this weekend....so will share some I have taken over the last couple of weeks !!! I guess the only thing left to do is start raking, I will only have to do it once.

The Sartorialist has captured this gorgeous look .... with all the elements I love ..... the wool, the tweed, the fur and that shade of camel that I will never grow tired of .... stylish fashion .... stylish for furnishings.

And while I was enjoying the Sartorialist I strayed off into Garance Dore to find she also loves her white jeans in winter !!! They look fabulous with a camel, black or grey cashmere jumper .... city or country, ballet flats, boots or Hunter wellies !!

claridge's .... a very british residence

We all think of afternoon tea when we hear the name Claridge's, however I was fascinated to learn more of the history of this favourite London icon while reading one of my favourite blogs ..... from Mulberry.

Mulberry, another British icon known for its luxurious fashion and leather goods, chose Claridge's for the fifth time to host its Autumn/Winter 2012 show during London Fashion Week.

As part of sharing this experience with its readers Mulberry asked Claridge's about its history and for any interesting facts about the hotel.

I hope you enjoy these snippets about Claridge's as much as I did. It will make it all the more meaningful when next you meet there for afternoon tea.

PS. There is something terribly smart about black and white floors whether they be tile or marble, large or small .... and the entrance at Claridge's .... just so glamorous !!!

pure and general ..... from travels far and wide

This was not my first trip to Pure and General, however as it turned out, it was their first birthday. The store looked as fabulous as I had remembered .... I think it just keeps getting better and better !! These shelves are constantly changing.

It truly is a visual delight .... however, what sets this store apart is not just the totally unique product but the merchandising !! I was on a mission to find the perfect wedding present .... the choice was endless (and I kept getting distracted by what I personally just couldn't live without).

It was terrific to cross paths with the owner, Linda Gregoriou who can tell you the source, the story behind each piece .... and of her travels !! We are talking Cypress, Turkey, Greece, Denmark, Spain, Morocco, Belgium, France, Finland, Japan and the list goes on ......

There is such joy in discovering something new and something totally unique .... 'homewares with enduring quality, physically sourced'. (There does seem to be a sameness amongst homeware stores where product is sourced from Gift Fairs.) When Pure and General have sold out of a product, it won't be replaced .... something even better will probably arrive instead !!

Pure and General is a favourite with Interior Designers and Architects who are always on the lookout for different and one-off pieces of furniture, lighting or rugs for projects. The secret is to pop in regularly to keep an eye on the latest in store. By the way .... their very smart little cafe is very close to opening ....think Victoria Room delicacies !!
