Google Chrome Beta with Your USB (Thumb) drive

Google released its own browser called Google Chrome Beta this week. The shinning chrome is not just a browser, it is actually an application that builts in many features to perform the important stuffs you do such as searching, chatting, email, browser history, memory management and so on (as missing them in other browsers like Internet Explorer,Opera and others).
It's amazing that Google comes up with something 'special' and also becomes more like Internet Operating System near future.
Here, what the Google Chrome Beta means for users/developers:

Multi-process architecture with each tab runs on its own, since more and more websites require more resources of our computer.
Improve speed and responsivensee across the board.
Smarter memory and CPU usage and prevent the browser crashing.
Task Manager for websites and visual browser history.

I've found the portable version Google Chrome from Carsten's site. All features are the same as the main browser, and you don't require to install and carry it with USB drive (just unzip the files and start Chrome). It tested with Window XP SP3 and Vista SP1.

Google Web Toolkit (GWT)....official release version 1.5

GWT released officially the final version 1.5 today. Congrats to the GWT team and the whole community for making this release happen.

What for developers?

This week, I find out how much Adobe AIR, web-apps been popular and develop increasingly from web developers, recently?
Just remind the AIR applications, which are downloadable platform for running web applications on any operation system. Simply download and install Adobe AIR/applications on the desktop, and make it worth playing with them or just more interesting? Here, take a look at some applications with technical information.

Google Analytics Reporting Suite

Application: a useful tracking tool that puts all data from Google and easy to navigate the visitors' pageview, data pages' loading information and specific time spans, and more.

Technical: built using Adobe Flex 3 with a custom built ActionScript 3 API for Google Analytics.

Application: those whose use Google Reader then you can use this air applications instead and has the same basic UI layout/style.

Oracle Goes Green

I read the article about IT Goes Green with Oracle in this month oracle magazine. The article comes on the front page's magazine from the editor. It is nice to hear that very big companines like Oracle and Dell lead investing in the green technology and keen to succeeding in what many others consider a grand challenge mission of saving carbon foot print and the climate change on our planet.

Gaia Glory Beta 3.0 Library Released

Gaia Ajax Widgets is an Open Source Ajax Framework for Microsoft ASP.NET or Mono.

Gaia has done nicely job for Ajax framework with ASP.Net and released Gaia Glory Beta 3 toolkit library. Highlight of samples are following:

There are plenty of other samples in Gaia site and as developers alike, Gaia Ajax widgets is published under a pure GPL version 2 license that you can develop the open source software. What a Nice Smart Pen around this week?

Can you imagine that one day all of sudden things change quickly so called Digital World? That's true in these days. While you're working on the desk or presenting, you normally do taking notes but sometimes can't decide whether writing on the notes or typing with the keyboard, right.
Here is a smart pen called "Pulse Smartpen" combine with mobile computing platform and normal pen with a special paper. While writing, you can do audio recording, and play it back while reading the notes with intelligent software. Of course, after all these you've done, just download the results to the computer via USB with pen's core software. Smart pen's specification is below:

The price is not that cheap however, 1GB model for $149 and 2GB model for $199. Another is a special paper as mentioned, it costs 4-pack 100-sheet Single Notebook for S19.95 and only works with the Pulse smart pen and claiming that it is comparable in cost to a standard notebook paper.

What good on this? Let you do digitally organizing, searching and sharing the notes easily but in my opinion, there is an another risk to invite your privacy or losing data in some way. I hope not happening so...

Computing for the Future of the Planet

Andy Hopper, professor of computer technology at Cambridge University, is heading up a team of researchers exploring how we can use the technology to solve the problems like environmental impact, energy efficiency and social justice, that computing technology could help us maintain our current ways of life, and even give more people access to the comfort, safety and pleasures. He delivered to talk on "Computing for the Future of the Planet" at YouTube, Google Tech Talks Channel.

He covered a variety of areas that ranged from practical deployment issues that should be addressed today to futuristic concepts. The beginning of the talk, the part that was of most interest to me, was about energy efficient computing: adaptive datacentres and a “virtual battery” (moving computing tasks to where energy is available). Power consumption is certainly a key focus for Google and other large web companies. It’s intriguing to think about shifting data and processes in real time based on the cost of energy.

Another of Andy’s interests is sentient computing. He presented a digital world model based on sensors, both indoors and outdoors, and possible applications. Imagine the ability to automatically construct your daily transportation carbon profile based on where and how quickly your mobile phone travels. The digital world brings benefits, especially to the developing world, because it can be constructed using miniscule power and made accessible to every human. The “unbounded upside of computing” is a strong motivator for web developers as we build our apps to be global and deploy them in a power conscious way.

Google App Engine - Need Without Invitation

Today, Google just announced that they are opening the App Engine for developers, without invitation and the expected pricing for the service in near future. As I mentioned previously about the Google App Engine which allows you to create web applications and host them on the Google's servers; and I'd been waiting to get an invitation some time, too. Unfortunately, you need to verify your account by entering a code sent to your mobile phone.

Google App Engine only supports Python language at the moment and; offers the free quota of 500 MB of storage and around 5 millions pageviews per month for free. But the developers may able to purchase more computing resources sometime this year and here are the expected prices from Google:

$0.10 - $0.12 per CPU core-hour
$0.15 - $0.18 per GB-month of storage
$0.11 - $0.13 per GB outgoing bandwidth
$0.09 - $0.11 per GB incoming bandwidth

There are two new APIs that Google provides these from the feedback, the image manipulation API and the Memcache API.

The image manipulation API enables developers to resize, rotate, flip, crop and enhance images using the same infrastructure used in Picasa Web Albums. With the images API you can perform common image related tasks like thumbnailing images via a simple interface. For more information about the images API, please see our documentation.

The Memcache API is a high-performance caching layer designed to make page rendering faster by reducing datastore queries and improving the performance of your application. The Memcache API was written by Brad Fitzpatrick, the same developer who created memcached, a caching layer that is used in some of the world's most popular web applications, and is compatible with memcached implementations. Testing Website with Different IE Versions

I just found a nice little tool for testing the web sites on different versions of Internet Explorer (IE). There have always been difficult, running to different versions of the browser in Window due to prevent from Microsoft and some of solutions could get around this limitation but often happened unexpected results and instability for OS or required you to run a VM.

Anyway, here is a free tool called IETester from Jean-Fabrice RABAUTE, whose behind the IE debugger DebugBar. This tool allows you to have the rendering and JavaScript engines of IE8 beta 1, IE7 IE6 and IE5.5 on Vista and XP, as well as the installed IE in the same process.

Using Popular Ajax Libraries on Google

Using the libraries from Google is that you don't need to worry uploading those files to a site or difficult to manage all the different versions, caching shared JavaScript libraries, and instead performing Web applications faster.
You can see below how to use those libraries from Google.

What exactly is the AJAX Libraries API?

We have worked with a subset of the most popular JavaScript frameworks to host their work on the Google infrastructure. The AJAX Libraries API then becomes a content distribution network and loading architecture for these libraries.
We work with the key stake holders for these libraries to make sure that the latest stable versions of their work get into our system as they are released. Once we host a release of a given library, we are committed to hosting that release indefinitely.

You can access the libraries in two ways, and either way we take the pain out of hosting the libraries, correctly setting cache headers, staying up to date with the most recent bug fixes, etc.

The first way to access the scripts is simply be using a standard tag that points to the correct place.

For example, to load Prototype version 1.6.0.2 you would place the following in your HTML:

The second way to access the scripts is via the Google AJAX API Loader's google.load() method.

You will notice that the version used was just "1". This is a smart versioning feature that allows your application to specify a desired version with as much precision as it needs. By dropping version fields, you end up wild carding a field. For instance, consider a set of versions: 1.9.1, 1.8.4, 1.8.2.

Specifying a version of "1.8.2" will select the obvious version. This is because a fully specified version was used. Specifying a version of "1.8" would select version 1.8.4 since this is the highest versioned release in the 1.8 branch. For much the same reason, a request for "1" will end up loading version 1.9.1.

Note, these versioning semantics work the same way when using google.load and when using direct script urls.

By default, the JavaScript that gets sent back by the loader will be minified, if there is a version supported. Thus, for the example above we would return the minified version of jQuery. If you specifically want the raw JavaScript itself, you can add the "uncompressed" parameter like so:

Today we are starting with the current versions of the library, but moving forward we will be archiving all versions from now onwards so you can be sure they are available.

Debate on Compression could reduce Data Center Energy

I just wanted to share a nice topic about how the compression technology can reduce Data Center Energy use by 95% and on the other hand giving the comment that how it could go well on the fact.

the concept to apply compression to primary data, such as application servers, email or databases and that will radically reduce data center energy usage. Storwize Inc., a San Jose, CA tech company, has a process to reduce data center energy usage up to 95 per cent. This means on a 100 TB database, Storwize can compress that to less than 10 TB of physical disk.

Real-time data compression reduces the amount of data written to storage devices and thus reduces CPU, disk, memory and network utilization on the storage system. It can do this through its patent-pending algorithms that allow write and read operations from any location within the file while avoiding the need to decompress the whole file.

Compressed data doesn't just save energy use, it reduces the real estate required to house the data centres, the energy needed to cool down the space and all the other trappings of physical space that adds up to a heavier footprint on the environment.

Commented by Sam Winter:

"Compression = more CPU time = more electricity. Duh"

It's much more complicated than that. Obviously, data compression requires a net increase in CPU power draw, but you are gaining back all the power required for many HDDs and raid controllers that you would have replaced as the data would be compressed. In that case, it would be fairly straightforward to figure out the NET reduction in total energy expended after gathering all the data on processor power usage, HDD power usage, how many units of storage could be removed, etc.

Now, using normal system CPUs to calculate the compression/decompression algorithms is very inefficient. A much better idea would be to add low-power, custom designed chips that implement the compression/decompression algorithms in hardware to the systems. This could be done DIRECTLY within PCIexpress RAID disk controllers that connect the servers to the harddrives. They would be doing real-time compression and decompression every-time a file is read or written, and at much lower power and much higher efficiency than the primary system CPU.
If you coupled this idea with smarter compression algorithms like those mentioned in the article that can access pieces of files without decompressing the entire file, this type of system could potentially create incredible gains in data-center power efficiency while keeping the same data capacity and use levels. At the same time, it could save a lot of money and service more users than a traditional solution.

Sleep Mode Issues on PC/Laptop

I posted previously a sleep mode with the computer in slowing the climate change, and there could be some issues on using sleep mode with the system. Ok, here are the most common problems and how to solve these.

What are the most common causes of notebook sleep issues?
A process running on the system does not allow the system to enter sleep mode.
A hardware interrupt, such as some peripheral devices for example.
An unstable driver which does not properly support sleep states or is just buggy.
Solutions:
Make sure that all of the latest updates are installed for your operating system (Windows Update on Microsoft Windows, Software Update on Mac OS X, your favorite package manager on Linux).
Close any running programs on the system (and exit any programs which are running in the notification area which is next to the clock on Windows systems).
Unplug all external devices (USB, FireWire, etc.) This includes your external keyboard and mouse if you're using one, your printer, and whatever else you have plugged in. And no, your USB-powered rocket launcher isn't an exception, even though it is really cool.
Use the "Sleep" option in your operating system to put the computer to sleep instead of the lid (Start > Turn Off Computer > Sleep on Windows XP, Apple menu > Sleep on Mac OS X).
Once the computer has gone to sleep, close the lid.
Mind you, some notebooks with older NVIDIA drivers on Windows Vista may cause your computer to go into a perpetual coma every time it falls asleep. If your notebook manufacturer hasn't provided you with a newer graphics driver, I'd recommend consulting a sleep therapist LaptopVideo2Go.com, which has all of the latest NVIDIA drivers and modified INF files for installing them on any NVIDIA graphics card.

Those who are interested to control which devices will wake or disable_wake during the computer in sleep mode. You can try some commands in running in a command prompt.

   powercfg -devicequery wake_from_any
This lists all the hardware devices that are capable of waking up the computer from standby. But the operating system typically ignores most of them. To see the ones that are not being ignored, run the command
    powercfg -devicequery wake_armed 
This second list is typically much shorter. On my computer, it listed just the keyboard, the mouse, and the modem. (The modem? I never use that thing!)

You can disable each of these devices one by one until you find the one that is waking up the computer.
    powercfg -devicedisablewake "device name" 
(How is this different from unchecking Allow this device to wake the computer from the device properties in Device Manager? Beats me.)

Once you find the one that is causing problems, you can re-enable the others.
    powercfg -deviceenablewake "device name" 
I would start by disabling wake-up for the keyboard and mouse. Maybe the optical mouse is detecting tiny vibrations in your room. Or the device might simply be "chatty", generating activity even though you aren't touching it.

Cuzillion wtih High Performance on Web

Steve Souders released a new open source tool called Cuzillion, at Web 2.0 Expo. The tool is for constructing web pages to see how components interact and lets you test out different techniques for optimizing performance in browsers.

So what's Cuzillion behind the idea, he says:

I’m constantly thinking of or being asked about how browsers handle different sets of resources loaded in various ways. Before I would open an editor and build some test pages. Firing up a packet sniffer I would load these pages in different browsers to diagnose what was going on. I was starting my research on advanced techniques for loading scripts without blocking and realized the number of test pages needed to cover all the permutations was in the hundreds. That was the birth of Cuzillion.

He also talks about some examples:

A great example of how Cuzillion is useful is looking at the impact inline scripts have when they follow a stylesheet in Internet Explorer. Typically, a stylesheet followed by any other resource results in both resources being downloaded in parallel in Internet Explorer. (In Firefox stylesheets block parallel downloads, so this performance optimization is only applicable to IE.) Here’s a Cuzillion page that shows this: stylesheet and image downloading in parallel. Both the stylesheet and image are configured to take 2 seconds to download. Since they download in parallel the page takes about 2 seconds to load as shown by the “page load time”.

But look what happens if we put an innocent inline script between the stylesheet and image: stylesheet, inline script, and image. Now, in Internet Explorer the stylesheet and image are downloaded sequentially, which means the page load time goes from 2 seconds to 4 seconds. If the inline script is simply moved above the stylesheet the two resources are downloaded in parallel again, and the page load goes back down to 2 seconds: inline script, stylesheet, and image.

This was a great discovery. But immediately my officemate asked if inline style blocks had the same effect. No problem. With Cuzillion I just do some clicks and drag-and-drop, and can test it out: stylesheet, inline style block, image. It turns out inline style blocks don’t cause stylesheets to block downloads.

The findings from a tool like Cuzillion are really valuable. The lessons learned from poking at inline scripts and stylesheets can save hundreds of milliseconds on page load times. And it’s a common problem. eBay, MSN.com, MySpace, and Wikipedia all suffer from this problem.

Much thanks to Google for letting me release this code under Open Source. It’s not currently on Google Code but if you want to contribute let me know and I’ll do that. Try it out and send me your feedback. And share your insights with others. We all want the Internet to be faster!

I've been reading through and following the news about the Climate change on the planet that how the web technology can save the carbon footprint. Google App Engine with Python Client Library

Here is the new version of Python code library with Google App Engine, released by Jeff Scudder, Google Data APIs Team. Google App Engine can able to integrate with Google Apps, and the new library has support for Google App Engine and the Contacts API. The details are from here.

The 1.0.12.1 release of the gdata-python-client has a couple of nifty new features which I thought are worth mentioning. First, is a new module which allows the Python library to be used on Google App Engine. Since the App Engine runs a sandboxed Python interpreter, HTTP calls must be made using one of the App Engine's APIs: urlfetch. After some refactoring of the library's code, I was able to write a drop-in replacement for making HTTP requests, so that the gdata.service module can be used on Google App Engine. To use urlfetch instead of the library's default (httplib), you would use the following:

This refactoring has the added benefit of making it easier to swap out the HTTP transport layer from under the gdata.service module. I'm planning to take advantage of this for a new mock_service module to use in unit tests, and the door is open if people want to help with that or other ideas (I've been meaning to support httplib2, and will one of these days).

Updated (April 10th, 2008) to reference release 1.0.12.1 instead of 1.0.12. The new release fixes an issue with importing ElementTree.

Shu vs. Adobe AIR

Shu is another Adobe flash wrapper, just like Adobe AIR but some of features look sound great for developers and users alike. The significant feature is that allows you to by pass installing AIR runtime to the user's system instead running the standalone applications on PC or Mac. Shu applications can also able to run from a CD or network share without installation. For developers, Shu provides a toolkit of commands to extend the system capabilities of your AIR application, "features include, controlling external applications, opening external files, database connectivity and control, system path retrieval and screen capture functionality". Just below the facts that Adobe AIR currently does not support the features, but Shu does.

AIR does have a number of drawbacks;

AIR applications must be installed in order to run.
AIR applications will only run on a machine with the AIR runtime installed
AIR applications can not be run directly from a CD
AIR applications can not open files such as word documents or PDFs
AIR applications can not execute other applications
AIR application can only make use of the built in SQLLite database, but Shu support MySQL instead of SQLLite

Let's see how Adobe AIR will approach and support more features in the coming ahead.

Google App Engine?

Google App Engine - able to host and run your web application on their own infrastructure.

App Engine applications are easy to build, easy to maintain, and easy to scale as your traffic and data storage needs grow. With App Engine, there are no servers to maintain: You just upload your application, and it's ready to serve your users.
You can serve your app using a free domain name on the appspot.com domain, or use Google Apps to serve it from your own domain. You can share your application with the world, or limit access to members of your organization.
App Engine costs nothing to get started. Sign up for a free account, and you can develop and publish your application for the world to see, at no charge and with no obligation.
A free account can use up to 500MB of persistent storage and enough CPU and bandwidth for about 5 million page views a month. During the preview release of Google App Engine, only free accounts are available. In the near future, you will be able to purchase additional computing resources, said Google.

Google App Engine applications are implemented using the Python programming language. The runtime environment includes the full Python language and most of the Python standard library. Although Python is currently the only language supported by Google App Engine, but looking forward to support more languages in the future.

I think, Google becomes "the Internet Operating System", much more like Microsoft. I hope, they won't approach the way Microsoft monopolizes the computing technology these days and the past. Let see how the Google goes...
