American Dog Gear

2016-04-15T01:04:00.000-07:00

We have recently made the decision to limit and focus our store offerings to American-made dog items exclusively. Right now we are stocking primarily collars and leashes, although we may add a few choice antiques with dog themes, and possibly books.

So our store will continue, but on a smaller scale, celebrating the fine design and superb quality dog products created right here in the USA by our favorite American businesses.

Just a few of the fun items you will find in stock this week -

(National Jelly Bean Day is coming on April 22nd!) A great excuse to pick up a fun new collar for your best pal.

Whooo are you lookin' at?

Love these guys!

And patriotic theme collars. The look that never goes out of style.

Freak Out!

2015-08-02T22:03:00.003-07:00

How about this for a Halloween dog costume? Stuffed soft polyester that feels like imitation leather done in a reptilian, scaley texture. Can you say creepy? The stinger and claws are so detailed! An amazing costume for your pet that will make terrific pictures for your Halloween cards and messages.

Here's another new costume for us this year. So fuzzy and plump and realistic that I shuddered a little just unpacking these.

Fuzzy fake spider fur with all the details of a tarantula. Your dog will love it when people shriek and freak when they see this creature coming towards them. A marvelous costume by Zack and Zoey, top quality and off the charts hideous.

Amazing dog costume that will be the hit or the horror of your party or trick-or-treating event. Have fun making some fun videos with your dog dressed up in these costumes!

Looking ahead to Fall

2015-07-29T18:22:00.001-07:00

That would be my little black poodle, Arlo, the year he was an ear of corn for Halloween. He had a little more decorum than his first puppy year, shown below in his monkey costume. (Notice that he completely ignores the cool banana toy to do a little carving of his own on the pumpkins.)

We know that it's early to shop for costumes, but are already listing a few of our favorites. More to be added, of course, but right now we're working on
bad boys like these -

fun Fall colors

and football!

New items added every day. Stop by for some great new Fall gear for your best friend!

Sick with a Dog

2015-06-17T19:43:00.000-07:00

This last week I was felled by what was probably one of the most evil viruses I've ever had the misfortune to "host." After swearing off any sandwich that contains mayonnaise not made in my own kitchen, I've pretty much began sleeping around the clock, sipping lots of water and struggling to stay upbeat. Usually upbeat and cheerful, this bug definitely was a quick trip to the slough of despair.

Fortunately, during my hazy convalescence, there was Arlo. Recently clipped into a fashionable retro cut, he hopped up on the couch and spent days by my side, trading his occasionally pesty behavior for the demeanor of a dedicated nurse. Calm, and present, he took his place by my side for days. Finally, able to get up and take him for an early morning excursion, he became his usual active self, and we greatly enjoyed our first day bordering on normalcy.

What a gift to have a little pal see you through several days of a rugged bug!

Our dogs are so attuned to us, and really do their part when the weather gets rough.

Laughter to Share

2015-05-26T01:57:00.000-07:00

Our dogs love to hear us laugh. They pick right up on the lighthearted mood. Like a windy day, silliness puts them in a giddy frame of mind.

This little blue guy is a toy with a manic laugh. The sound chip inside it makes a cascade of hearty laughter when the toy is shaken. Kind of like one of those folks in an audience whose laughter has a rolling crescendo that's so outrageous it becomes the joke itself.

This is a big toy with lots of party potential. Give your dogs something new to play with

and they'll enjoy making you laugh along with this little monster.

A hilarious new buddy for your best friend.

Unicorn Chaser

2015-05-11T01:16:00.001-07:00

A Unicorn Chaser, what we all need to combat the deluge of disturbing news stories and crass images that fill our media screens daily. Your dog will agree. He or she would love to become a Unicorn Chaser when you toss this charming toy in a lively game of fetch.

Our dogs work hard to keep us upbeat, whether pestering us to go on a refreshing walk, or curling up on the rug to catch a sunbeam so we get the idea to slow down a little.

There are no Debbie Downer dogs. With all the fascinating scents along the trail, who needs to fret about the gridlock in Washington or try to unravel the lies of politicians? Each day is a wonder, and the past, as well as the future, can't make it less marvelous.

Maybe stopping to just enjoy a space of time and toss this toy for your dog would lift your spirits like the Unicorn Chaser we all need from time to time. Your dog will love the easy-grab horn and legs and the fluffy mane and tail for lots of playtime variety. Add some quality to your day and your dog's day with our pink unicorn plush toy!

Mother's Day Present and Past

2015-05-09T22:16:00.001-07:00

My first beloved dog was a Dachshund. One of the countless gifts my mom gave me, he was a promise kept. I spent the year before my 7th birthday looking forward to my own dog, buying a special bowl, gathering supplies, and being rather obsessed with becoming a Dachshund mom. That was a year in which family conflict boiled over, ending with divorce, and a lot of stress for my newly-single mom. In spite of all the challenges she faced, when my birthday arrived, a little short-haired, red, standard Dachshund was there to celebrate with me.

Herman was my best buddy for the next 14 years. I read aloud to him, walked him to the park with my friends, and trained him to jump hurdles and do obedience work. At the risk of being an obnoxious brag, he won the first place trophy in his obedience class. (And if you've ever trained a Dachshund, you know I was rather relentless.) He was happy to sneeze on command, close doors that were ajar, or whatever I taught (and retaught) him to do. I eventually gave up my life goal of being a dog trainer, and became a school teacher. In a way Herman was my first pupil, and in a way my first kid.

We moved to sunny California, our neighborhood was lovely, and Herman, was always by my side. Of course there were moments, like the time he chewed a circle of fabric right out of our new living room rug, ate a starfish drying from a tide pool expedition and had to have his stomach pumped by the vet, and ruined my new school shoes by chewing the entire heel away. (This was a dog who eschewed chew toys, full of that trademark Dachshund independence.) He was always there, and a better childhood buddy I cannot imagine.

I often think about how graciously my mother managed those years alone with two kids, entirely reliant on her teacher salary to see us through. Like most moms, she never shared her worries and distress with us, but created a home filled with love, friends, and the kind of carefree childhood that everyone should enjoy.

Long story short, the picture up top is an early Mother's Day present from my own kid, who brought it from the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. We both love the simplicity of the image - one single line, that captures the Dachshund character so succinctly. That little refrigerator magnet means that Herman will be hanging out with me every day once again.

On Mother's Day I think of all the moms we remember and honor with cherished memories. I also think of all the dog moms who love their fur kids like I do, through thick and thin. And especially one beautiful, courageous mom who never broke her stride while providing a secure and loving family life for a young girl and her dog.

Get Ready!

2015-05-08T05:08:00.000-07:00

That's a flea, folks. Our favorite new dog toy features your pet's arch enemy with a wonderfully sinister expression, dangling bungee legs for yanking, dragging, and tug o'war, plus a sound chip! The noise this toy makes is a very electronic-sounding "Boing!" When I received the toys from my supplier I set down the box they arrived in and heard this "Boing!" sound. Kinda like, "Let us outta here, Lady. We're here to infest your house!"

The body on these is about 4 1/2" long, and with the legs, they're a good size for every dog.

This is a flea your dog can have fun with!

For the real ones, however, we have some terrific products with Insect Shield.

Blankets for the beach, yard, or camping spot.

Bandanas

and a cargo cover for your vehicle.

Get ready for some comfortable travel and summer fun with

these fine products that will unfriend bugs!

how Insect Shield and other helpful information
about protecting yourself and your family.

Defend your dog against all those irritating (at best),
and health-threatening insects: mosquitos, ticks,
and the historic nemesis of our family pets,
this guy.

Tubettini Cute Alert - Three Darling Dachshunds

2015-05-01T22:56:00.001-07:00

This trio of adorable adventurers are our delightful Dachshund customers from Florida.

That's Jack on the left, Bentley in the middle of things, and Baby Girl Darla on the right.

These guys are so much fun. Their mom calls them her Tubettini.
That's an Italian take on the old frankfurter food reference for Dachsies.
(And also a fun pasta shaped like our favorite long body dog.)

Smart little dogs, and adventurous.

There's so much to enjoy in sunny Florida, where they live.

So what could be more fun than one Dachshund?

Well, three of them that like to team up and have fun together.

Getting together with family and friends and having a great time, isn't that what our dogs

remind us that it's really all about?

Our humble little pets truly are the wise ones, and by their happy presence show us the way.

These three little Dachshunds look for joy in every day, and find plenty

to share with their family and friends.

Seattle Mariners Dog Fan Gear

2015-04-13T01:11:00.001-07:00

The season has begun and everyone here in Seattle is ready to go out and cheer on our Mariners. Our baseball stadium Safeco Field is an amazing bit of architecture with an almost steam punk feel. The beauty of the stadium is that it is visible from the air, the street, the freeway, the train, and the water. Likewise, you can get some great views from the stadium and fresh, Northwest air while you cheer on the team. (If it's raining, no problem, the field has a retractable roof.)

Seattle is said to have more dogs than kids. I don't know if that is true, but the dogs around here do wear lots of team gear. So we just stocked some very cool baseball jerseys with the team name and logo on the back (and #1 for your dog, of course), and a high-cut tummy with buttons. Such a classic look!

These should work well for dogs with wide necks, but if you aren't sure about your pet's size, just contact us. We are happy to compare your dog's dimensions to the actual garment to help you select the perfect size.

One thing we keep kind of quiet about here at Dog City Dime Store is our cat clientele. We know that many of them do wear team logo bandanas when their folks entertain, and so we have our Mariners bandanas in Small and Large.

(Here is our customer Rambo wearing his Seahawks bandana.)

Cute collars for Mariner dogs are available in Small, Medium, and Large right now. Pick up your pet's new baseball team gear today!

If you are visiting Seattle this summer, be sure to go to a game at the Safe (Safeco Field). You'll see some great Pacific Northwest scenery, savor the fine food, and enjoy our favorite team. You'll see ferries, trains, seagulls, and quite a few Boeing airplanes if the rooftop is open. Lots of fun and friendly people here and a great team that remind us why we Americans love baseball.

Go Pack Go!

2015-03-24T22:40:00.000-07:00

And who is this sleepy boy? Our handsome customer, Hank, wearing his new Green Bay Packers football and laces collar.

Perhaps Hank is dreaming of Aaron Rodgers tossing a winning touchdown pass, the Packers winning the Super Bowl in 2016, or possibly just appreciating his wonderful folks, who take such good care of him and take him to Packers training camp every year.

Hank loves to play in the water at the beach or anywhere, even if it's just actively helping to wash the car. He is a "sweet boy and a good snuggler."

We love our Green Bay Packers fans at Dog City Dime Store, and have a fine pack of dogs who wear the licensed team gear with great style: Hank, Reggie, and Atlas are just amazing dogs.

And as Packers fans like to repeat, coast-to-coast, in any conversation, wherever they are,

GO PACK GO!

Singing in the Rain

2015-03-19T20:56:00.000-07:00

We know raincoats here in Seattle, and so do our dogs.

That's my little guy right there, keeping his fresh trim dry and poufy. He's also showing you a design feature on all the raincoats we stock that allows you to attach a leash to your dog's collar, yet keeps him from getting wet.

That little flap with the dinosaur logo on it actually covers up the leash attachment slot so no drip, no wet, even when it's liquid sunshine.

The other neat trick that this design offers is clever folding option that allows you to tuck the entire raincoat into itself and it magically becomes

this portable pouch, perfect to store in your purse, car, pocket, or your dog's emergency pack.

We have raincoats in several themes and colors, so look around to find one for your pet. Choose from a whale, a monkey in a stocking cap, a green dinosaur, red ladybug, or busy, buzzy bee.

Here's our bee theme raincoat in blue

and a fun monkey in olive green.

Not all sizes in all colors, so shop around, as it's time to get ready for April showers. Our prices will have you singing in the rain!

Hot Stuff!

2015-02-13T15:33:00.004-08:00

You know it if you have one of those little dogs with a big attitude: always ready to prove themselves, walk with a strut, and bark out anyone with no hesitation. If you have a feisty, small dog like my little tough guy, this is for you.

I just listed these chili pepper collars and leashes from Tuff Lock. Top quality, made in the USA, and full of fire. The perfect look for the dog who would favor a large hat and fancy cowboy boots.

Everything about these collars and leashes is quality: the patented quick-release buckle clasp,

and sturdy, yet flexible nylon webbing with stunning color.

I stocked these in three sizes, including very Small, so they are just right for the tiniest dogs, puppies, and Chihuahua, Yorkie, teacup pets.

We sell the chili toys, too. Safe, embroidered faces, squishy wide wale corduroy, and squeakers, they are the perfect size for a little dog with ten-gallon attitude.
