Reading My E-commerce blog is an anodyne makes you feel good. This blog contains the latest updates and development on e-commerce and Internet related development and information meant for sharing with my readers.

Among the interesting topics are e-commerce business models, e-government, Internet security, ethical issues, e-tailing and many more categories. There will be more categories or topics to be added in the blog such as social networking tools like Twitter and Facebook related news, e-learning applications and many more.

Another discussion topic is the E-Commerce revenue models which specifically describe different techniques used in generating income from the publisher's websites. As the e-commerce progress, the traditional revenue model of sales is expanded to more variety of revenue options and e-commerce business model. Among the revenue models are sales, advertisment fees, affiliate fees, subscription fees and transaction fees.

During one of the trimester, I actually designed an assignment which required my students to produce blogs on topics related to e-commerce.The main purpose of the blogging assignment is to introduce the blogging culture among my students and at the same time trying to see whether the application of the blogging assignment will helps them to enhance their understanding on learning the subject of E-Commerce. All together there are 120 blogs being created (99 from accounting majors and 21 from entrepreneurship majors).

SMS spammers fined almost RM50 million (A$ 15.75 mil)

In the first court action taken by Australian Communication and Media Authority against unsolicited SMS messages, 2 companies and 3 individuals were fined with a total of A$15.75mil (RM49.14mil) for contravening the Spam Act.

Spammers fined massive RM49.14mil

MELBOURNE: Two companies and three individuals have been hit with penalties totalling A$15.75mil (RM49.14mil) for contravening the Spam Act, the first court action taken against unsolicited SMS messages.

The fines were handed down in the Federal Court in Brisbane on Friday.

Mobilegate Ltd and Winning Bid Pty Ltd were found to have contravened the Spam Act and the Trade Practices Act 1974 in August 2009, the Australian Associated Press reports.

Three individuals former Winning Bid director Simon Anthony Owen, current Mobilegate director Tarek Andreas Salcedo and Winning Bid employee Glenn Christopher Maughan were also found responsible for the breaches.

The case was the first court action taken by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) against unsolicited SMS messages.

ACMA acting chairman Chris Cheah said it was a significant outcome for all mobile phone users.

"The maximum penalties provided for under the Spam Act are very high," he said.

"The substantial penalties imposed by the court in this case show that spam will not be tolerated in Australia." - Bernama

The Star reported that at least 66 people were cheated almost RM73,445 when they performed online purchases of skincare products such as facial and eye masks with "BigPussyCat" website.

These people were tempted by the cheaper prices of the products offered as compared to the market rate or over the shelves.

Online beauty products deal turns ugly for 66

KUALA LUMPUR: At least 66 people paid the price for their ignorance when they were cheated of their money after making Internet purchases of skincare products from someone named “Big Pussycat.”

The victims made online transfers amounting to RM73,445.10 for the products which came under names such as “My Beauty” and “My Sherman Beauty” that had been advertised on “Big Pussycat’s.” website

These products included facial and eye masks.

Salesman Chong Wei Lun, 29, made purchases totalling RM2,910 for his girlfriend on May 4 but the products never arrived.

“The price of the items was cheaper than those off the shelf,” he said as he explained why he was lured by the advertisement.

Chong was one of the 11 dissatisfied customers who turned to MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong to voice their grievance.

At a press conference yesterday, another victim Winnie Tan, 20, said she discovered that she had been ripped off only after her friends told her to do a more thorough check on the advertisement.

She saw website postings warning people that the sale of the skincare line was not genuine.

Michael Chong advised the public, especially young people, to be more cautious when buying goods featured on the Internet, adding that he would submit all the complaints to the police.

Free iPhone for University students...to catch truants

A prestigious Japanese university, Aoyama Gakuin University is giving out free iPhone 3G to its 550 students from the School of Social Informatics.

The main purpose of this idea is to use the iPhone, equipped with the GPS systems, to trace the whereabout of the students as a mean to check their attendance. Of course, the iPhone will also be used as a tool for their studies such as searching for course materials uploaded, lectures videos and tests. It is also hope that new iPhone applications can be developed by the students.

Universities used to give out free laptop, free webcam (especially for e-learning programmes) and now iPhone. I believe this is a very good move as it helps to bring out more creative applications designed by the fresh mind of the young users, which in turn will benefit others as well. I do hope that more educational institutions will take up such initiatives in the very near future, not just merely using it to nab the truants but more on creating the space and avenue for more new applications.

Beware when you starts to receive multiple sales calls from nowhere or some commercial sms. This could be due to the fact that your personal data has been compromised by some of the companies.

The Star run a special report on the individual data protection issue on Sunday, 3rd May 2009. These are some of the except:

"KUALA LUMPUR: For a mere 10 sen, your personal data are being sold to unauthorised bodies. A list of 1,000 entries containing names, handphone numbers, type of credit card owned and issuing banks, and place of work costs only RM100.

If you regularly receive unsolicited sales calls, messages or e-mails, then in all likelihood, your data have been collected and sold to third parties.
With such baseline information in the hands of the unscrupulous, more particulars could easily be gathered and your identity stolen – for transactions and the purchase of goods or services without your knowledge.

The fact is any database is vulnerable – from loyalty cards and telecommunications companies to housing developers to members-only clubs – and there will be a demand for it as it represents a list of potential customers.

My two cents:

This is really frightening that individual personal information such as banking and contact information can be obtain so easily. The most worrying part is the possibilities of the data to be misused by those irresponsible parties such as applying bank loans, credit cards, or even from the shark loan. Something has to be done by all parties to protect the customer's privacy.

University to offer Master's Degree about Facebook and Twitter

With the widespread and increased popularity of online social networking site such as Facebook and Twitter, a one-year Masters of Arts in Social Media is being planned at the Birmingham City University.

The course will include some areas of study such as social networking sites as communication and marketing tool, setting up blog and publishing podcasts. It will cost a student £4,400 in term of the tuition fees.

Favourite passwords used online

What are the most common passwords used by online users? According to a research done by Information Week on an analysis of 28,000 passwords from a popular website:

16% uses name (yes, your own name, spouse or children)
14% likes "1234" or "12345678" (easy and nice)
4% uses "password" or "password1" (password = password)

Some other common passwords includes:

qwerty (English keyboard letters below the numeric keys)
hannah, pokemon, matrix, ironman (popular tv show stars)
iloveyou, ihateyou

For better protection, it is safer to choose a password that is longer than 8 characters with one capital letter and one symbol.

Lower Credit Card Interest Rates from March 31, 2009 onwards

Early last year, Bank Negara introduced the new tiered interest rate structure for credit card which was implemented from 1st July 2008.

Barely 9 months into the new structure, Malaysian banks are lowering the interest rate again in order to encourage more good repayment habits among the credit card holders. The interest rates is going to be reduced between 0.5% to 1.5%.

Interest rate for Tier 1 (all the 12 consecutive months of prompt payment in the past 12 months) would be reduced by 1.5% from 15% per annum to 13.5%.

Interest rate for Tier 2 (10 or 11 months of prompt payment in the past 12 months) will now be reduced by 1% from 17% to 16% per annum.

Lastly, interest rate for Tier 3 (less than 10 months of prompt payment in the last 12 months) will have only 0.5% reduction from the current 18% to 17.5%.

The new interest rates structure will be benefiting those who pay promptly every month (Tier 1) as compared to those in Tier 3.

Besides, the late payment charges will also be reduced from the present RM10 to RM5. However, there is no changes on the 20 days interest-free on partial payments.

Going through some of my students' presentation slides when I came across MalaysiaCrunch blog on World's Best Presentation Contest 2008 organised by SlideShare.net.

Its an eye-opener experience looking at other's presentation design which are quite captivating for the readers. I always try to learn to improve my presentation slides design by looking at others' design and here is such a great opportunity to do so.

Scenario 1:
Step 1: Browsing a web site's online catalog, looking for a specific product and compare its price with another few web sites.

Step 2: Select the item into online shopping cart and click checkout.

Step 3: Enter the payment information such as Credit Card or PayPal information, billing and shipping addresses.

Step 4: Receive immediate notification of the successful transaction.

Step 5: Wait for the item to be delivered to your place or download it from the website (for digital product).

The steps or scenario mentioned above is one of the example on how e-commerce works in our daily life.

What is E-commerce?
E-commerce is the process where business transactions such as buying, selling and exchanging products, services and information through the computer networks, particularly the Internet. E-commerce also can be performed through the Intranet and Extranet.

It is also known as a digitally enabled commercial transaction between and among organisations and individuals. Digitally enabled transactions include all transactions mediated by the digital technology, mainly through the Internet and the Web. Commercial transactions involve exchange of value (money) in return for products and services.

In short, e-commerce means performing online business transactions. Its a way of doing business, through the Internet.

After a break from blogging (mainly because of the final exam marking), I'm now back on blogging.

New semester just started on Monday. Since it is a relatively short semester with a 7 weeks of lectures and tutorials sessions, the current teaching team did not continue with the previous semester's assignment where students were required to create blogs.

For this semester, the assignment is on evaluating a transaction e-commerce website in Malaysia. Beside this, students are also assessed through mid-term test and a group presentation. Presentation topics range from Internet security, mobile payment systems, digital divide, wireless revolution, e-government to corporate blogging.

Google launches its own web browser named Chrome. The open source browser is designed to be lightweight and fast as to compete with IE and Firefox.

Bank customer are sold in eBay
An IT manager bought a computer for £77 from eBay. However, to his surprise, the consist of sensitive information belongs to millions of bank customers. Information found includes historical credit card applications, customer's signatures, mobile phone numbers and mother's maiden names.

It was reported that the volume of the junk mails with the Olympics theme increase tremendously prior to the opening ceremony with the intention to trick people into visiting those fake sites or opening some harmful attachments. Read more here.

Hi-Tech criminals target Twitter
A fake twitter profile with a malicious payload has been spotted which link to a pornographic video. However, it actually downloads a fake version of Adobe Flash which in turn will install a programme that is capable of stealing data. It is believe to be the first of this kind of attack on Twitter. Joint research on cybercrime by MIMOS and German university

A Memorandum of Agreement has been signed by MIMOS with German's Ruhr Unviersity Bochum on conducting joint research to tackle the cybercrimes such as Phishing, Pharming, Viruses, and Hacking.

MIMOS (Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems) is a Malaysian government-owned R&D organisation specialising in the areas of Information & Commmunication Technology and Microelectronics. MIMOS is the agency that responsible in bringing in the Internet to Malaysia through Jaring in 1991. (Source: Wikipedia)

The joint research aims to explore the possibilities of other security method, beside firewall and anti virus software, such as specialised hardware which could block the cyber crime attacks or invasions.
