How Much Food Can You Buy For $5 Around The World?

This is a cool little video by BuzzFeed that show’s how much food $5 can get you in various countries. They say “around the world” but it’s really only a hand full of countries, but still, it’s nice know that beer is incredibly cheap in China.

Street Art by Roa

Found on Curtain Road in London this work dates back to 2009, however I’ve never seen it before and thought it was magnificent. By playing with perception, Roa is able to display the circulatory system of the rabbit and as you walk down the street you see it’s physical appearance as you look back, or vice versa.

At first I didn’t even notice the giant mirrored letters sitting in the middle of the open field, however up close you can see the word FEAR created out of mdf and mirrors hiding in the distance. Fear is something buried inside all of us and I thought it was only appropriate to share. A section of the artist’s statement is below.

“My most recent work comes from abstract emotional states stirred up from specific self reflective moments. These moments arise as I become more aware of myself in the present and my inability to control the future”

I definitely feel like this whenever I see work that I truly admire.

“А life-size wax sculpture of a man, rammed into a painting made by a great Serbian artist. The sculpture is Fabre’s alter ego: an artist in the role of a martyr. Defeated by his ancestors, the alter ego accepts the fact that he will never be equal to the grand masters of the past, and will never experience their fame.”

Wood Watches by Slim Timber

You may be aware of Slim Timber and their wooden wallets, well now they are venturing into the world of watches. The water resistent watch, appropriately named The Slab, is made out of repurposed skateboard decks or stabilised maple wood, and is powered by kinetic movement, which means you never have to worry about batteries. They are currently looking for pledges on Kickstarter to fund the project, and I’ve embedded a nice video below to give you a bit more information about the watches, which is definitely worth checking out.

The Guide by Young Fathers

Like most of the music I listen to, I was introduced to this Scottish alternative hip-hop group by the internet’s busiest music nerd, aka Anthony Fantano, way back in 2011 when their debut EP Tape One was released. Last year they were signed to Anticon Records and they re-released Tape One last January in various formats, including cassette tape, which is nice. I hoping that they release an album this year now that they have a label backing them, so fingers crossed for that.

These little investigations by Trevor H Smith put a smile on my face, and if nothing else, that’s something worth sharing. Very simple and well executed, and even if Trevor feels they have no relevance, I think they’d make interesting typographic posters. Lord knows I’m sick of landscape photography with poorly kerned Helvetica over the top.

These awesome illustrations were created by Jason Levesque. His website is packed full of great digital illustrations and many are available to purchase as limited edition prints. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that Jason is also on tumblr and goes by the name Stuntkid, you can find his tumblr page linked below. I’ve also embedded a time lapse video which shows him creating his Dead Lips illustration, which I haven’t used in this post because I didn’t think it fit the theme, but it’s interesting none the less so check it out.

Often the simplest things are the most delightful, take these playful little erasers for example. They’re a simple idea that’s executed perfectly. Each eraser has a different expression and as you correct your pencil errors you’ll mould their hair into interesting styles, until they eventually become bald. You’ll be able to purchase them from the website linked below, however, they don’t seem to be for sale yet so if you’re interested I’d check back soon.

Finger Paintings by Paolo Troilo

By using nothing more than black and white paint and the hands he was gifted with Paolo Troilo is able to create incredibly expressive portraits that are bursting with energy. Although these portraits are of himself, he insists these are not self portraits, and that they are “portraits of human beings translated to a male body”. Sometimes the figures face is visible, sometimes obstructed, but their emotions are something we can all relate to. I’ve embedded a nice video below that gives a more in depth look into his work.

As a 90’s child myself I would have loved to have had this room growing up, in fact I’d love to have this Calvin and Hobbes mural on my wall right now. Growing up Calvin and Hobbes were a fond memory for me, and something I always associate with my elder sister because she loved them more than me. Hopefully your inner child will enjoy this as much as mine did.

Planet Universe by Adam Kennedy

This imaginative series is created by San Francisco’s own Adam Kennedy, who uses photographs of old rusty fire hydrants and creates wonderful worlds that float through space. If you look closely you’ll notice that the rust marks on the hydrant create the planets oceans and land formations. Adam is hoping to gain funding through Indiegogo to create a series of posters using the images, as well as a calendar, and if you’d like to donate you can do so with the link below.

Aurora Borealis Timelapse by Göran Strand

When a solar flare occurred on March 15th of this year the solar winds hit earth and created a mesmerising cosmic light display over Sweden, known as the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Using 2464 raw images Göran Strand was able to capture the event and created this magnificent time lapse. I’ve embedded the video below and I highly recommend taking a moment out of your day to chill out and watch.

The Moonlight by Yang Yongliang

Having seen Yang Yongliang’s incredible photographic series titled The Moonlight, I was looking through his site when I noticed an installation piece with the same name. The Moonlight is an oil painting on acrylic light film that is placed over a light box, which is then placed in a water pool that has a small fan beside it. In the light the piece looks rather mundane, but when darkness fills the room, the moon is illuminated and the fans rotation creates a beautiful ripple over the water that reflects the magnificent moon.

Rap Quotes by Jay Shells

This awesome project plots various locations in New York city that are mentioned by rappers in songs. Jay Shells places these street signs at the exact locations mentioned by the rapper and inadvertently creates a hip hop scavenger hunt that I’d love to take part in. I really hope these signs are never removed because it’s really interesting to know that when you stand below one of these signs, you’re standing at a point that has had a part to play in the evolution of hip hop culture. I’ve embedded a video below where Jay Shells gives more insight into the project.

Body Scripture by Ronit Bigal

Using black Indian ink Israeli artist Ronit Bigal skilfully and meticulously wraps parts of her subjects skin in calligraphy that’s made up of Hebrew scriptures taken from Biblical texts. The abstract images are often left looking like landscapes as the tiny lettering follows the contours of the body.
