"Love it. I am no expert on this type of tooth brush, but I can tell you my impression of the first of this kind I have ever used. At first, I was shocked. This thing vibrates (like a buzz) your head when brushing the top teeth. It is kind of like a dentist drill but much more dynamic. It took me a week to get used to that, but after a week, I can only say good about this product. The vibrations are intense as needed to give the results like a "dentist office" cleaning. After one week I have already seen the difference. The company advertises two weeks, but one will show results. It is not hard on the gums, in fact it stimulates them unlike any toothbrush I have ever used. The bristles are somewhat hard without the slightest irritation to the gums. Since this device uses NiCad batteries, I do not keep the charger plugged. It has gone 2 weeks without need for recharging. That is amazing.

The replacement heads are reasonably priced which is unusual in this market. The battery is replaceable, but I do not know where you would be able to purchase one. The "timer" feature is great and is very useful. The brushes detach easily if more than one person uses the motor section. The tiny brush (floss head) supplied with it is useless. I wish they would have placed an extra tooth brush in it's place. The overall feel, quality, and weight of the product is excellent. It is hardly bigger than a manual tooth brush.

I very much recommend this tooth brush. There may be better ones out there, but I bet it would be at a much higher price. I question whether the costs difference would be worth it."

"Wonderful Toothbrush. This is the first electric toothbrush my husband and I have used. We both love it. Your teeth feel extra clean right away. The small head lets you reach your back teeth easily. I'm happy there isn't an actual "beep" after each quadrant, just a pause. The fact that the toothbrush stays on after 2 minutes is very nice! My lower gums are more sensitive than my upper gums, and I can change the setting to sensitive to brush my lower teeth after I used the regular setting on my top teeth. After I charge our handles, I don't charge them again for a week and a half (I haven't pushed my battery to it's limit yet). I hide the small base under the sink. I don't have any complaints about the toothbrush and would recommend using it to anyone. "

"Fantastic Toothbrush, Good Value. A Great toothbrush, well worth the money. I purchased this 2-handle pack for my wife and I, but I was a little bit skeptical buying from "Hi-Tech Market" instead of amazon, but they were the only ones selling this 2-handle pack. After purchasing, the package was waiting outside my door 3 days later. Fantastic!

The package includes: 2 handles, 3 brushheads (2 flossaction, and one polishing), 1 travelcase, 2 Smart Guide displays, but only ONE charger, and base. Having only one charger is fine when both toothbrushes are used in the same home. The battery lasts for about 2 weeks, so having to share a charger isn't a problem. The charger and "base" are seperable, meaning that both toothbrushes still have a stand. One stands in the charger, and the other one in the silver/blue base. Genious! Whenever you need to charge, you just switch the toothbrushes. The charger IS also Europe-friendly. This was very important to me as I also live overseas. The charger is 100-240V~ac , so it can be used anywhere in the world without having to worry about the voltage differences.

As far as the acual toothbrush goes, its wonderful. It has 4 different modes- clean, gentle, massage, and polish. The polishing cup is just like the one they use as the dentists. The brushheads have a little chip in them that communicates with the toothbrush and automaticly changes modes to the right one. IE if you put on the polishing cup, the toothbrush will automaticly sense it and start brushing in polishing mode! It feels like it's a strong brusher and the flossaction heads leave your teeth squeky clean every time. The Smart Guide, as trivial as it may seem, certainly does fullfill it's purpose. I always make sure I brush the full time, and I'm rewarded with a happy smilyface. The quadpacer is perfect if you brush for two minutes, but if you brush for more than two minutes it will just mess you up. I find myself brushing even longer than two minutes now.

After 2.30 the smile turns into an even bigger one, and after 3 the face winks. Even though it may seem childish, it certainly makes brushing your teeth for a full two minutes easy.It can even be set on longer times if you would rather prefer to brush for 3 or 4+ minutes. The Smart Guide can be programed to each toothbrush so there is no need to worry about interference if your both brushing in the same bathroom.
All in all, it's a very well thought out toothbrush. Lots of tiny nice features that make it a little bit fun to brush, and it brushes extreamly well. However, it does come with a rather heafty price tag, there IS a similar model without the Smart Guide that may be of intrest if the Smart Guide just seems too much... "

"WOW! My teeth feel clean!.I have been using a sonic toothbrush for quite some time, so switching to the Oral-B Professional Electric Toothbrush was a bit of a shock. Once I got over feeling like I was brushing my teeth with a swirling brillo pad (a sonic toothbrush head doesn't rotate, it just kinda vibrates). I discovered what I have been missing! "THUMBS UP FOR THIS BRUSH FROM BOTH OF US. While both of us have long been fans of Oral B products we found this brush to be extra special due in large part to the helpful additions made with this model vs. our four year old one.

We really, really like the smaller brush head which seems to be able to clean teeth in places that a longer, straight brush does not. Our older straight brush seemed to coast along the front while this brush gets into crevices.

Neither of us is sure that we've ever had a problem because of brushing too hard. Nonetheless, the warning light for that is a nice safety factor.

"Great step to complete oral health. I have used many different oral irrigators and a couple of electric toothbrushes. I wasn't to particular at this point. Then my boyfriend was told he had to have "scaling and planing" to correct his gum disease and we both freaked. We knew that we had to improve our program. We did the research. After reviewing and reading and asking around, we come up with the Oral B 8900. The battery operated brush seems very much like the Sonicare unit in its effectiveness. The selling point of this particular unit is the water jet. It is awesome and I recommend it to anyone. The settings of pressure are from 1 to 5...I have always maxed out oral irrigators in the past and never found much to get excited about. With this unit I have yet to go over a 3 and may in time work up to a 4 or 5 level, but only with consultation with my hygenist. The unit also come with a tongue cleaner that is attached to the battery unit. Much easier to use that manual cleaners. All in all, my boyfriend just spent over 4K and some VERY unpleasant days in periodontal agony. I am sure this little unit will keep me out of the surgeons chair and my boyfriend wants to be sure never to end up with gum disease again. "an once of prevention......"

"Best toothbrush I've ever used. I'd been using a fancy Sonicare toothbrush for about a year when my dentist told me I had gum disease. I had to go through an unpleasant scaling procedure to do a deep gum cleaning. Afterwards, we talked about my brushing habits. "Classic Powered Tooth-brush Improved! I've been using the Oral-B series of mechanical toothbrushes since the early 2000s. I'm a fan of the system because it is very cost effective, especially compared to the sonic variety. I've got my family and friends to use them to great results. Their advantage over standard toothbrushes cannot be overemphasized, provided you use both correctly.

This is apparently a tier above the most basic model, by adding "3D" feature--which is really a vibrating brush head in addition to rotation--to the basic rotation model. Based on usage and observations of various users and previous models, and after testing the unit out myself for the claims, let me try to break it down:

Pros/Improvements:

- it's still impeccably made; not that the origin (Germany) necessarily have anything to do with it, but I'd be hard pressed to find anything more consistently well made, or feels more solid, including the much more expensive Sonicare lines, or almost any other consumer products I've owned.

- the inductive charging base is much improved over previous models. I'm not talking about the lack of brushhead holder which isn't meant to be on this low end model anyway, but that the charging area next to the inductive notch is completely open. It makes a huge difference as the older designs have difficult to reach corners/crevices that may trap dirt and water deposits that can be hard to clean. It also looks better with symmetrical lines and smaller footprint (that's only slightly bigger than the brush's), adding to the clean, minimalist appeal. It's also much easier to carry if needed for travel.

- Furthermore, the charging notch is compatible with any Braun mechanical units sold after 2006, so for some people you may be able to use the old charging base or find one at your friend's for stay-overs, etc. A minor point, probably, but I had found it a convenience for travels.

-It uses any of the mechanical Oral-B brush head designs: Other than Oral-B's own sonic line that has incompatible replacement heads, it has a great selection of mechanical heads to choose from: Precision Clean (included), Floss Action (rubber flaps), Pro White (rubber disc), and Dual Clean (larger, two part brush head that doesn't "hug" the tooth as well in my opinion). I think there's also a sensitive variety with softer bristles for each of these designs. It's unmatched in terms of brush options.
-the classic head design may look small, but is designed to very effectively hug the entire tooth and cut into gaps and corners, provided you do not over pressure the brush and only rotate the brush angle to cover all areas. It may take some patience for a two minute brushing, but it's proven to be very effective at removing plaque.

- rubberized area to the front (thumb) rather than the back (fingers) of the brush handle-- it may sound trivial, but this proved to be important. The smoother plastic area may be more "slippery", but it is also mildew and stain resistant and very easy to clean. By contrast, with the previous "Vitality" lines, the rubberized area covered most of the body with creases to aid handling, but over time dirt, hard water deposits and even mildew developed, requiring a soak in bleach to remove. Older models with a similar minimally-rubberized design fared much better. I'm glad this model carried the more traditional layout.

- being a better-than-basic model, thankfully it has two indicator lights, telling you charging states(charging/full) and when battery is nearly depleted. Some of us may never need it (and oral-B basic models started removing lights all together to cut cost), but for the average user this can be useful especially for the sake of battery maintenance routines.

- the use of NiMH battery: these brushes are powered by a single rechargeable AA sized battery. Braun has used NiCd since the introduction of these designs, and this is the first time I see NiMH being used. There are pros and cons to this change (will also cover in the Cons section). NiMH is certainly more environmentally friendly with low/no toxicity, that almost certainly prompted this change as NiCd is now banned in Europe. NiMH also has no discernible memory effects. The instruction still tells you to completely discharge at least every 6 months, a recommendation which is shared with NiCd for longer service life. The discharging pattern for NiMH is also more linear, meaning that it will feel relatively powerful from full charge to depletion (proved to be true on this model), where with NiCd you can feel the power wane very quickly as the battery discharged through use. The capacity is also generally higher with NiMH, meaning fewer charges required between uses. The combination of longer battery life and even discharge pattern making it more feasible to use the brush without leaving it on the charging stand. (though one can also leave it on the charging stand, Braun seems to have reservations based on "environmental" reasons; it's also useful if you are packing the brush to travel for a few days without having to take the charger).

"Great toothbrush I have an old Braun Oral-B toothbrush that I got about 10-15 years ago. I was curious to see how this new Oral-B toothbrush would compare to my old toothbrush and if it would be worth it to "upgrade".

I foung that after using the toothbrush for a week, that this Oral-B toothbrush was significantly better than my old Oral B toothbrush.

Overall, this is a very simple toothbrush. Using the idea that you should brush for 2 minutes, which equals 30 seconds for a quadrant of your mouth, just press the button to turn it on and every 30 seconds, the toothbrush seems to hesitate to let you know that you should brush in a different area of your mouth. Seems a tad silly (I think a simple 2 minute timer would work better/make more sense since you may not need to brush the same amount everywhere), but I got use to it.

The speed of the toothbrush is much faster than my old toothbrush and when I finished brushing, my mouth had that clean feeling you get after your dental hygenist cleans your teeth. I found it easy to handle and use in every cranny in my mouth.

A warning light lets you know when your battery is starting to fade and you need to recharge. The recharger base is much smaller than the old ones and hardly takes up hardly any room (which is important if you don't have much shelf space).
If you're like me and you have an older Oral-B, I recommend upgrading to this new Oral-B. It's a much better toothbrush. "

"Very happy with Oral-B 5000 purchase! I decided to purchase this product for the simple fact that it had a battery indicator on it and because of the small portable charger. Those were the two top reasons why I purchased this product. I knew I wanted to purchase an Oral-B. I ordered the Oral-B 5000 Sunday 9-20, it was shipped 9-21 and I recieved it 9-25. The order came from TeethNthings. The product was packed ok but I received it banged up. The postal worker wanted to blame it on poor packaging but it was packaged fine. The product itself was fine.

I have been using this product for a couple of days now so I must report that I am overall very happy and satisfied with it. I read over the instructions twice, and when I used it for the first time, I was puzzled when I felt it doing small pauses. The instructions are ok. They could have broken it down dummy-style for some of us but oh well. I was a bit confused about how to set the timing part, but I figured it out. It could have been the excitement.

If you buy this product, it will do these short pulses every two minutes. After two minutes of brushing, the smiley comes up and winks. So cute. If you reach 4 minutes of brushing, it will do the pulse thing again. There is a DVD that comes with it to explain their brushing technique of using the brush. They break it down in 4 quadrants, 30 second intervals, two get in at least 2 minutes of brushing.

The toothbrush itself is a tad bit noisier and heavier than my old ancient basic one, but let me tell you, boy does it go. I feel like my teeth are getting a serious dental treatment, Spa Dente'. I don't know what this toothbrush will leave for the dentist to do, besides exrays. To switch between the different brushing styles, you will push the triangle button while the brush is on. The detached screen thing will tell you. I use it in sensitive mode. If you are brushing too hard, it will flash red. Be careful not to push it while brushing, as it would seem easy to do.

I really really love how they have the charger. It is small and not bulky, which is perfect for travel. Pretty smart how they did that. The charger base is your travel base as well. I really really love the blue travel case that it comes with so you can store two brush heads. That is so neat.

The best thing about this toothbrush is that it really gets your teeth, gums and mouth clean. The smell of my breath has improved also. It does a wonderful job. I am very very pleased and would recommend this toothbrush to anyone. It is a little expensive but it is well worth it to me. I hope if you purchase this you will enjoy it as"

"Well made, effective and pleasant to use. I can't think of anything negative to say about this product. I did a lot of research on Oral-B's products as compared to Sonicare before buying this unit, and I'm happy as heck with the choice I made. It's easy to use, easy to keep clean, very well constructed and is a very effective oral hygiene tool. Also, since my bathroom is small, I really appreciate the small footprint of the recharging base.

When I was making the decision to buy this model, I went back and forth as to whether to go with the SmartSeries 5000 with its separate "Smart Guide," (as opposed to the only slightly-cheaper 4000) but I'm glad I opted to pay the extra money for this additional gizmo. "excellent my teeth were whiteer within a few weeks
I love this toothbrush it was expensive but well worth the money. Within no time my teeth were whiter and this gives me instant feedback to keep using it. The timer is awesome, i don't think i actually brushed for 2 minutes in my life. My gums feel better along with my teeth being whiter. The stand is simple and doesn't take up much space. it feels comfortable in your hand and the battery lasts long enough to take on a weekend trip, not sure more then that haven't tried it.

The only downsides are that it is a little loud and obviously it is expensive but the value is there."

"A great toothbrush at a frugal price

There's brushing, and then there's brushing. Brushing is the good one. Proper brushing removes stuff from your teeth that, if not regularly removed, can eventually lead to things like plaque build up to gingivitis and eventually even to things like pyorrhea. Pyorrhea is one of the most horrible things that I have ever seen. Proper brushing is an important part of your oral health regime (along with regular dental check-ups and flossing, etc.). I'm not a dentist, so I'm just reiterating what my dentist has told me every six months for the past 39 years.

As such, choosing a good toothbrush is a very important part of preventative maintenance. From a frugal living perspective, it always makes sense to practice preventative maintenance (especially with things like dentistry that is generally quite expensive - especially with major surgery). I have used Braun Oral-B electric toothbrushes for about five years or so and they were recommended to me by my dentist. I have been one of the `fortunate ones' who seems to have been born with good teeth (my teeth are straight and I have never worn braces, I have also only ever had one cavity and it happened way back when I was thirteen years old).

The toothbrush that I currently use is the Braun Oral-B Vitality Precision Clean electric toothbrush. There are a few important reasons why I love using it:

1. It feels great as you use it. It kind of tickles as it rotates upon your gums and it feels feels like it is giving them a really good massage (although I have never fallen asleep while brushing my teeth, I have nodded off a few times).

2. Your teeth feel really clean after you use it. It's not quite the `I just left the dentist's office' clean, but it gets you pretty close to it. It seems very effective at getting into those `hard to reach' areas. I can feel a significant difference between when I use this brush and when I use a manual one (which seems to be only when I go camping).

3. The toothbrush has a built-in timer. Apparently the optimal amount of time that you should be brushing is about two minutes. Many people do not brush anywhere near this amount of time. This brush makes it easy by including a built-in timer that gently pulsates the brush to let you know when two minutes are done.

The other factor to consider, cost-wise, is the cost of the replacement tips. I replace mine about every two to three months and the cost anywhere from between $3-$5 a piece depending on where you buy them and how many you buy in the package. I feel that, despite being more expensive than a regular manual toothbrush, this this ongoing cost is well worth it. I will never use a manual brush again (unless I am camping).

There are millions of different electric toothbrushes. I am not an electric toothbrush aficionado or a dentist or a dental hygienist. I am just a frugal thirty-nine year old, with his first child on the way any day now, that knows that brushing your teeth well is very important, that this brush is less expensive than many, and that I feel that it does a terrific job of cleaning my teeth and massaging my gums. "My old braun toothbrush broke after over 10 years of perfect service.
I ordered another from Amazon at around £[], but they vibrated so badly that I felt my teeth were being ripped out. I sent it back as I couldn't imagine it was right.     An electric toothbrush is a toothbrush that uses electric power supplied usually by a battery to move the brush head rapidly, either oscillating side to side, or rotation oscillation (where brush heads rotate in one direction and then the other).

History

    The first successful electric toothbrush, the Broxodent, was conceived in Switzerland in 1954 by Dr. Philippe-Guy Woog. Woog's electric toothbrushes were originally manufactured in Switzerland (later in France) for Broxo S.A. The first clinical study showing its superiority over manual brushing was published by Pr. Arthur Jean Held in Geneva in 1956. Electric toothbrushes were initially created for patients with limited motor skills, as well as orthodontic patients (such as those with braces). Claims have been made that electric toothbrushes are more effective than manual ones as they are less dependent upon patients brushing correctly

    The Broxo Electric Toothbrush was introduced in the USA by E. R. Squibb and Sons Pharmaceuticals at the centennial of the American Dental Association in 1959. After introduction, it was marketed in the USA by Squibb under the names Broxo-Dent or Broxodent. In the 1980s Squibb transferred distribution of the Broxodent line to the Somerset Labs division of Bristol Myers/Squibb.

    While the Broxodent may have been the first electric toothbrush and a superior product, the electric toothbrush that caught the public's attention in USA was the General Electric Automatic Toothbrush introduced in the early 1960s. Similar to the Broxodent in function, it differed in that it was cordless with rechargeable NiCad batteries, while the Broxodent plugged into a standard wall outlet and run on AC line voltage.

    This difference in power source was significant for several reasons. The GE toothbrush, although portable, was rather bulky, about the size of a two-D-cell flashlight handle. NiCad batteries of this period left much to be desired: they suffered from memory and lazy battery effects. The GE Automatic Toothbrush came with a charging stand which held the hand piece upright; most units were kept in the charger which is not the best way to get maximum service life from a NiCad battery. Early NiCad batteries did not hold much energy, and it was not uncommon for the GE Automatic toothbrush to run out of power before brushing was complete, particularly if several people used the same battery-holding handle (with separate brushes) without recharging. Finally, early NiCad batteries tended to have a short lifespan. The batteries were sealed inside the GE device, and the whole unit had to be discarded when the batteries failed. The purchase price of each GE Automatic Toothbrush was lower than a Broxodent. The GE Automatic Toothbrush sold well.
    The Broxodent hand piece was slim and remarkably compact, even by today's standards. Since it was powered by AC line voltage, it never ran out of power, although it could grow warm after extended use. Early Broxodent models came with a straight power cord, later units with a coiled cord. All Broxodent cords had a small molded strain relief where the cord entered the hand piece, but this was still the likeliest place for a cord to fail. Since the Broxodent hand pieces were sealed, a cord failure was not repairable and the expensive toothbrush had to be discarded. That said, it was not unusual for a Broxodent toothbrush to last for 20 years or longer; failures were rare.

    The use of an AC line voltage appliance in a bathroom environment was problematic. By the early 1990s Underwriter Laboratories (UL) and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) would no longer certify line-voltage appliances for bathroom use. Newer appliances had to use a step-down transformer to operate the actual toothbrush at low voltage (typically 12, 16 or 24 volts). Wiring standards in many countries require that outlets in bath areas must be protected by a RCD/GFCI device (e.g., required in USA since the 1970s on bathroom outlets in new construction).

    By the 1990s there were problems with safety certification of Broxo's original design. Further, improved battery-operated toothbrushes were providing formidable competition. Broxo S. A. still produces and markets a low-voltage model, but its public visibility in the USA has been limited in the face of large competitors, such as Philips Sonicare and Braun Oral-B models. Later Broxo models had no major distributor (such as Squibb) in the USA, and only sell online.

    The Broxo low-voltage models used several different methods to attach the actual brushes to the hand piece; however, brushes were often not interchangeable between Broxo models. By the 1990s replacement brushes for line-voltage Broxodent models were no longer sold in the USA, so the original Broxodent Electric Toothbrush was no longer suitable for use there although it had started a trend and sold for over 30 years.

Effectiveness

    Independent research finds that most electric toothbrushes are no more effective than manual brushes. Of course the comparison assumes that people using a manual toothbrush will brush properly. The "rotation-oscillation"-models, including many of the electrical brushes in Braun's Oral B-series, are marginally better than manual ones. The research indicates that the way brushing is done is more important than the choice of brush. For certain patients with limited manual dexterity or where difficulty exists in reaching rear teeth, however, dentists strongly feel that electric toothbrushes can be especially beneficial

Power source and charging

    Modern electric toothbrushes run on low voltage, 12v or less. A few units use a step-down transformer to power the brush, but most use a battery, usually but not always rechargeable and non-replaceable, in the handle. Electric toothbrushes are hermetically sealed to prevent water damage. While early NiCad battery toothbrushes used metal tabs to connect with the charging base, modern toothbrushes use contactless inductive charging: the brush unit and charger stand each contain a coil of wire; when placed in proximity, the powered coil from the stand transfers power by induction to the handle, charging the battery.

Optional features

Timer

    Many modern electric toothbrushes have a timer which buzzes or briefly interrupts power, typically after two minutes, and sometimes every 30 seconds. This is associated with a customary recommendation to brush for two minutes, 30 seconds for each of the four quadrants of the mouth.

Display

    Some electric toothbrushes have LCD screens which show brushing time and sometimes smiley face icons or other images to encourage optimal brushing. These features could encourage people with communication or other difficulties
