One thing that made me sad with the re-do was loosing these precious hand print of my kids...but they had to go to make room for the new laundry room doorway. *sniffle*

Our handyman was quite surprised when he stared cutting out the new laundry room doorway...he found the wall was made up of 4"X12" boards...this project took quite a bit

longer than originally planned.

I guess that's one of the ~~horrors~~ joys of living

in a house thats almost 100 years old!

Game Closet Re-Do part 1

Part of our redecorating and remodeling was moving the laundry room door from the RoseRoom to the game closet which was just around the corner. I disliked the fact, that whenever anyone came into our home the first thing they saw across the room was our laundry room...even though it had a door it was a glass door and usually open.

Flowers

Spring is finally emerging here in Utah.

I tend to be a non-conformist and not go with the flow...growing up I would always hear how beautiful the rose was.

Seemed everyone loved roses the best, as a result,

roses were not on my favorite flower list.

Surprisingly enough, I have lots of roses growing in my flower beds, I even dedicated an entire bed to planting a rose bush for each one of my children. I call it my Heritage Rose Garden.

But, my all-time-favorite flowers are

Daffodils and Shasta Daisies...

Companion Planting - Series 1

(NOTE: Amy over at A Nest for all Seasons is featuring my Companion Gardening articles on her blog. She has lots of great gardening information and other cool stuff on her site...stop by and say hello HERE!)

This is a first in a 2 part series on companion planting. I gained an interest in this several years ago and did some extensive research on the subject. Since then I've implemented what I learned into my own gardens and have been pleased with the results...I will not be able to post on every fruit and vegetable, but will post on the ones that I plant most often. I will include the best companion plants for a better yield, best companions to fight pests, and incompatible companions for each plant. Unless otherwise specified, these plants should be planted next to each other.
To keep these articles from being too long I'm not posting the whys and wherefores...you can contact me if you desire this information. (All photos courtesy of Google Image)

Bush Beans (pole beans, have a different set of companions).
COMPANIONS FOR BETTER YIELD:
carrots, corn, cucumber, lettuce, mint, peas, radishes, strawberries.
COMPANIONS FOR PEST CONTROL:
marigolds, rosemary, summer savory, potatoes (not inter planted but in an adjacent bed.)
INCOMPATIBLE COMPANIONS:
beets, garlic, onion, chive, peppers, and basil.
NOTES: planting marigolds around the perimeter of your bush beans gives added eye-appeal to your garden.

Beets
COMPANIONS FOR BETTER YIELD:
onion, sage, corn, lettuce, radish.
COMPANIONS FOR PEST CONTROL:
onions, bush beans (note: beets are not beneficial to bush beans)
INCOMPATIBLE COMPANIONS:
pole beans.

Carrots
COMPANIONS FOR BETTER YIELD:
beans, chives, peas,peppers, radish, rosemary,onion, sage, tomato, leaf lettuce.
COMPANIONS FOR PEST CONTROL:
onion, chives, garlic, bush bean, rosemary, parsley, sage.
INCOMPATIBLE COMPANIONS:
dill, celery
NOTES: plant a row of leaf lettuce between rows of carrots, as the weather gets hot, pull lettuce, leaving room for the carrots.

Corn
COMPANION PLANTS FOR BETTER YIELD:
bush beans, dill, peas,cucumber, potatoes, melons, pumpkin, squash, sunflower, peanuts, beets, parsley, lettuce
COMPANIONS FOR PEST CONTROL:
bush beans, cucumber, geranium
INCOMPATIBLE COMPANIONS:
tomato
NOTES: planting cucumbers between corn rows will help support corn and keep it from blowing over as easy.

Cucumber

bush beans, carrots, corn, lettuce, marigolds, onion, pea, radish, tomato.
COMPANION PLANTS FOR PEST CONTROL:
bush beans, nasturtiums, radish, tansy, dill.

herbs with strong aroma, sage, potato, squash melon, pumpkin.
NOTES: I like to put my cucumber trellis on the south side of my lettuce. The shade from the trellis keeps the heat off and I can harvest my lettuce longer.

Lettuce

beans, carrots, cucumber, onion, garlic, strawberry, corn.
COMPATIBLE PLANTS FOR PEST CONTROL:
onion
INCOMPATIBLE COMPANIONS:

NOTES: I usually plant a row of onions between my lettuce. When the lettuce is done I pull it out to give more room for the onions.

Peas

beans, carrots, corn, lettuce, radish, spinach, tomato, turnip, parsley, strawberry.
COMPANIONS FOR PEST CONTROL:
cucumber
INCOMPATIBLE COMPANIONS:

NOTES: I grow my peas strictly for the kids. They are welcome anytime to just sit in the garden and snack on them!

Peppers

beans, carrots, marigold, onion, pea, horehound, marjoram, tansy.
COMPANIONS FOR PEST CONTROL:
none that I could find
INCOMPATIBLE COMPANIONS:
fennel, tomato, potato.

Radish

bean, carrot, cucumber, lettuce, onion, pea, squash, chervil, beet, corn, melon, spinach, tomato.
COMPANIONS FOR PEST CONTROL:
mustard plant, nasturtiums.
INCOMPATIBLE COMPANIONS:
hyssop.

B-17 Bomber

It's not very often a person accidently finds an article about their dad in the news paper...

As a little girl I grew up hearing my Dad tell his WWII stories. He talked many times about how his life had been miraculously been saved. He was the co-pilot of a B-17 bomber. On their final flight, they were shot down over Munich, Germany. The pilot who was sitting next to my dad, was killed in the resulting crash.

In February of this year, one of the other surviving cewr members had an article published in the newspaper. In it he talks about my dad. I've included his story below. Harold Gividen is my dad, Clinton Norby is my dads friend...

Veteran finding fewer comrades to talk with about crash

SALT LAKE CITY — The story is told in part by two large black and white photographs that rest on the floor of Clinton Odell Norby's living room. They show a B-17 bomber wrapped around a tree in an otherwise open field. It looks like an angry giant grabbed the plane out of the sky, yanked off a few pieces, crushed it in his fist and hurled it to the ground.

The reaction to the photo is always the same: "How could anyone survive that?"

And yet Norby did survive that crash in Switzerland, along with seven other members of the bomber's nine-man crew…

He has thought a lot about that crash over the years, but never more than when Feb. 25 rolls around each year. Last Friday marked the 66th anniversary of getting shot out of the sky by the Germans in the last days of World War II.

Over the years he celebrated the day the same way: By calling another member of his B-17 crew, Harold Gividen, the co-pilot who also happened to be from Utah. On each anniversary they would visit and catch up and talk about that long-ago day. But then Gividen, of Mapleton, died in 2003, just hours before his wife also died after telling him for years that he wasn't going to leave without her.

It was Gividen who visited Switzerland and found those photos. They were taken by the Swiss government and archived. Gividen obtained copies and brought them home to Norby.

Now that Gividen is gone, Norby can no longer call him and talk about the day they cheated death. The other crew members are dead or their whereabouts unknown. Norby remembered the day last Friday by pulling out photos, old letters and histories of the crash. A model of a B-17 hangs from the ceiling of a back room, adjacent to a large drawing of the airplane. He tells his story as if it happened yesterday, rather than six decades ago.

When the war broke out in December 1941, he was 19 years old, newly graduated from West High. He was eager to sign up for military duty, but it was a long process. He flunked his first test to be a pilot, then passed the second test and that began years of schooling. He went to preflight school in Texas, then pilot training in St. Louis, where he washed out.

(After training)...

They finally entered the war on Feb. 23, 1945, flying a night mission to Czechoslovakia. They got lost in the dark while trying to form up with their squadron, but dropped their bombs and returned home without any other incident.

Two days later they flew their second mission and encountered heavy flak as they bombed railroad yards in Munich, Germany. The bomb bay doors wouldn't open, which meant Norby had to climb into the bay and manually open them with a crank. As he was cranking them open at 27,000 feet, suddenly he heard "a puff" and realized he was surrounded by thick black smoke. He thought the plane had blown a fuse until he felt someone grab him. He turned to look into the eyes of the plane's navigator, whose faced was covered with blood.

The blood was cascading over his face from a slice across his forehead then freezing on his skin as it came in contact with the high-altitude air (the thermometer read minus 67 degrees).

"As soon as I saw him I knew we'd been hit," says Norby.

Anti-aircraft guns had taken out many of the plane's controls, which meant the pilots had to ease the plane out of the sky as they continued west, hoping it wouldn't spin out of control. Their plane was not on fire, but one by one their four engines were shutting down. They knew they were going to have to crash land, so Norby and other crew members climbed into the bomb bay and began unloading bombs manually.

Around the same time they noticed the approach of fighter planes. Norby climbed into his turret to defend the crippled plane. He test fired the machine gun – and nothing happened. "That was when I was the most scared," he says. To his relief, he realized that the fighters were Swiss planes, not Germans, and they were there to escort them to their home. He looked out the window and saw the wings knifing through the tops of trees.

They broke into a clearing just as the plane touched down and eventually were stopped by a large tree, with the fuselage broken in half. All but the pilot survived. Gividen had a severe concussion. The rest of the crew had various wounds but none serious. Norby lost some of his hearing from the percussions of the flak, and throughout their childhood his children developed a habit of talking loudly for his benefit.

A half-hour later the Swiss army arrived and the crew's war was finished just as it started. "We had done all that training exercise, supposedly so we could run away from a crash, and we didn't get a chance to run," says Norby. They were given a doctor's exam, a room in town that included down pillows and comforters, and sumptuous meals. They stayed in Switzerland for 10 days before they were returned to England. Six weeks after the crash, Norby was back in Salt Lake City.

(My dad had received a sever concussion and had to stay behind. In the meantime his mother and father had received a telegram saying that Harold was missing in action. It wasn't until several weeks later that they learned their son was safe.)

Last Friday he thought about something one of the Swiss pilots told him after escorting him into Swiss territory. "He had circled the crash shortly after it happened," Norby recalled. "He said he thought to himself, 'There are nine men wasted. No one could survive that.'

The man in my dreams!

I have such an awesome husband...he is kind and gentle and expresses his love for me on a continual basis...yesterday I woke up quite ill and CL took the day off work to take care of me...He made sure the house was quiet so I could sleep...whenever I called for him he came with a smile and a tender hug...he messaged my head when it was throbbing with a headache...he fixed me some chicken noodle soup...later on in the evening when I was feeling stronger, he fixed me dinner!

I am so grateful for CL...to be madly in love with the man I married is one of my greatest blessings!

33 Years!

CL and I are celebrating our 33 Wedding Anniversary today!

We were sealed for time and all eternity.

For 33 years CL has been my Dearest and my Champion. I've also learned a lot of being married to him. Such as patience...(he is a slow goer and I'm a get it done now kind of girl).

I wanted my wedding dress to be simple yet beautiful ...so I designed and handmade it myself. I designed it with a detachable train. I used the train to sew our first born's Blessing outfit. The veil cap was my mothers from her wedding. I just replaced the netting.

When my parents passed away, I inherited the wedding veil. It is a priceless possession.

CL and I figure that if our marriage can survive 11 kids, it can survive anything.

He has taken the day off from work and we're goin' out on the town ALL DAY!

(CL looks like he's about 16 years old, but he's really 24 years old)

The past few days I've been feeling the SPRING BUG starting to creep in to my head and heart! I am blaming it all on the mail man...just look at what he's been bringing to my door!!!!!

Keeping this little bug under control is going to take every ounce of courage I can muster....yeouw, it's taking control....HELP!!! It's only January...3 more months to fight the urge! How will I ever make it! LOL

listening to today!

Many of you wonderful readers know that I'm a Mormon, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints...and if you've been visiting my blog for very long you also know that I'm not some strange creature...well at least no stranger than the next mom...Okay, I admit any woman with 11 kids has got to be a bit strange...LOL!

Today and tomorrow we are having what is known as The Worldwide General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I always come away Full... strengthened and able to be better!

It 's a time to receive council and encouragement from a living Prophet, Thomas S Monson, the 12 Apostles, and other General Authorities of the Church.

If you are looking for a more meaningful life, or some direction and encouragement, or just plain curious about what the Mormon's are all about, I invite you to come and listen.

Episode #8 - Rosebuds Heritage Rose Garden

In Rosebuds Heritage Rose garden there is a
rose bush for each of our children.

Each rose bush represents each child in a unique way.

I missed most of the roses while they were blooming...but you can get the general idea!

She has simplicity roses, English roses,

tea roses, and climbing roses!

It's quit a sentimental garden...when I see it, I think of my 11 children and how unique and beautiful each one is....hence the subtitle for my blog...Raising kids is a lot like weeding the rose bed...well worth it, but...OUCH!

Episode #7 - Dot's Cottage Garden

Dot was going through a Victorian phase.

She was enchanted with cottage gardens...thus the

theme for her garden spot.

The vine covered fence separates Dot's garden

from the rest of Sweet Memories, making it a secluded spot!

And the ever timid and sweet Piglet!

This is an enchanting garden spot perfect for

tea parties and story books!

Sweet Memories Garden - Episode #6 - Woody's Arch - A Place for Meditation

Of all the special children's gardens in Sweet Memories, (see tab at the top of my blog for more info.), Woody's Arch is one of the few that I can access with my wheelchair. When I enter, I feel like I'm entering a secret, special place all of my own!

It has become a place to escape, and meditate on the simpler creations that surround me.

One day I was sitting here just being quiet and listening. All of the sudden a movement in the wood chips next to the sidewalk where I was sitting caught my eye. Something was under there wiggling and squiggling. I couldn't see what it was so I waited and watched. Before long a pill bug emerged and went on his merry way. I soon began seeing all kinds of movement going on under the wood chips...movement that had been there all along but I had never noticed!

Last autumn brought the most beautiful colors to Woody's Arch...Virginia Creeper covers the arch that my father and sons built for me. This vine is considered by some to be too invasive, but it brings such beauty to our Sweet Memories Garden and becomes the focal point!

As I sat here in the autumn, the sound of trickling water from Chip's Pond and the falling of leaves brought a calming peace and assurance that God is mindful of even me. He has given me this lovely earth to enjoy and I am surrounded by his creations! "...all things denote there is a God; yea even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it... (Alma 30:44, Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ).

In the foreground of the above photo, you can see Chip's Pond. This is a place of constant motion, not only from the fountain, but birds, our cat's, and the dreaded hornets come here to drink. Chip's Pond is visible from Woody's Arch an I have enjoyed the view...even the hornets,

which we are infested with, don't seem so threatening!

Cute as a Bug in a Rug!

Sweet Memories Garden - Episode #5 - Busters Corner

Buster designed his flower bed when he was about 4 years old. The Old Fashioned Purple Lilac provides the shade. Notice there are no glowers to care for. If you look closely to the far right, you can see a metal stake with a metal flower...this was the only flower he wanted!

He has several statues... children on a slide, a little boy fishing, and a little boy sitting next to a bird bath.

His little bench and tic-tac-tac toe game are the focal point.

Busters corner is located between Tatty's Bunny Hollow and Bogies Brigadoon.

Making all 3 gardens a delightful place for children to play and use their imaginations!

Sweet Memories Garden - Episode #4 - Tatty's Bunny Hollow

Welcome to Tatty's Bunny Hollow Garden,...

It was named Bunny Hollow after one of the stories I'd written about my three youngest and their adventures in Sweet Memories. You will meet several of my storybook characters in her little garden!

This is the stump where Ol' Grandpappy lives with all the other rabbits in Bunny Hollow

Mr. Gus is a grumpy but funny mole that tries to avoid my little girls,

but seems to always peek out when they're looking.

On one of their journey's to Bunny Hollow, my girls meet Mrs. Myrtle Turtle. She is on her way to the Bunny Hollow birthday party but is so slow she will be late,

so the girls put her in their basket and give her a ride to the party.

In this photo you can see Mrs. Myrtle Turtle resting from her bumpy journey in the basket. Also there are 2 chipmunks that just happened by, and if you look up in the stump you can see Figaro and one of his sisters. They are naughty little sparrows that belong to Toot and Flute.

Some of my favorite stories to read to my children are by Beatrix Potter.

If you look closely, you can see the hedgehog, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle,

a delightful character from one of her stories!

This is a birdhouse that my brother made for me several years ago. It sits a-top the stump in Bunny Hollow.

Thanks for stopping by Bunny Hollow and meeting all our little friends. Tatty loves her garden.

She planted sweet violets in it because she knew they were one of my favorite flowers!

Sweet Memories Garden Episode #3 - Bogie's Brigadoon

(The pictures turned out a bit fuzzy, sorry about that.)

Bogie used to like the movie Brigadoon. That is why he called his garden spot Brigadoon.

We made the toadstools out of old metal bowls that my sister was getting rid of.

First we spray painted them red, then hand painted the white dots on with acrylic paint,

and finished them off with a coat of sealer. We then planted cedar posts in the

ground and secured the bowls on top with a screw!

The Tic-Tac-Toe table was a fun addition!

We used Gnomes and frogs for the playing pieces!

There is also a pipe in the ground next to the table to hold a large umbrella for shade!

The toadstools on each side are for sitting on while playing!

This gnome used to belong to my mother.

When my parents passed away, it came to me.

Bogies garden includes a spot in a corner next to the house,

so we put our new gnome here!

Brigadoon is a very low-maintenance garden. with artificial tarp covering the ground,

there is no watering and very little weeding!

Since the beginning of time, or a least since the invention of the motor car, kids have been itching to get behind the wheel. Our kids have been no different. More often than not it's on Sunday's when we hear, "Please can I drive?" from our to-young-to-drive kids.

STORY #1
Sunday, as we were in the church parking lot , CL and I passed a mini van full of kids, the mom was outside the drivers door and her 14 year old son was in the drivers seat pleading..."Please Mom, can I drive home?
I know how. I'll be careful."
CL and I looked at each other and laughed! We'd heard that same phrase from our own kids at least a zillion times through the years. And yet, who should be waiting in the drivers seat when we got to our van? You guessed it, JOKA (our 14 year old daughter). And what was the first thing out of her mouth?...You guessed it!...CL and I looked at each other and rolled our eyes. http://myelevenreasons.blogspot.com/p/meet-my-reasons.html

STORY #2

Several years ago when Bogie was about 10 years old we accidentally left him home from church. Our oldest daughter, Dot, had an old clunker car that didn't need a key to start. Bogie knew this and decided he would just drive himself to church. He hopped into the car, turned on the starter and attempted to back out of the driveway. CRASH! Right into the telephone pole. He was so scared he decided he'd better just walk to church.
