Movie Review: Lovin' Sunshine Cleaning

I was flipping through the channels during the Australian Open and I chanced upon this gem of a movie, entitled, Sunshine Cleaning, which was shown in Star Movies! It starred two of my favorite Hollywood actresses, Emily Blunt and Amy Adams! I love the story and the pacing and how this character, played by Amy, solves her problems. She's just the take charge gal. When you watch the movie, you'll find out why it's called Sunshine Cleaning. Emily Blunt is also great in it and Alan Arkin, who plays their Dad, just does the role with a sensitive touch! If you get the chance to see it while you're cable surfing, watch it! It's a feel-good movie! I love women who take charge of their lives! Very sexy!

Movie Review: Bring Tissue Paper to 'A Mother's Story' if You're the Weeping Kind

I actually like Pokwang. I believe she's one of the local stars who've really paid their dues before making it big in local showbiz - and that she's not physically attractive just shows she didn't go the route of the casting couch, which I'm sure some of the younger, more yummy men (and women) may have done to snare some big projects.

Anyway, this is the first time I've seen Pokwang act and she's so natural - so naturally funny! I know this was supposed to be a drama but Pokwang just delivers her line with so much deprecation you really end up laughing instead. I guess that was the producers' plan - to make this more of a story that Pokwang can carry, she, being a former OFW herself.

She has a very good supporting cast. Xyriel is a gem! This girl will really win all the acting awards soon as she becomes a lady. She's like a mini-Nora Aunor. Just look at her eyes! Nonie, being a theater actor that he is, can do this role in his sleep! Ditto for Daria Ramirez. Too bad they didn't ask Rayver to go shirtless here. I was already so down with all the weeping, seeing him naked would have been a good upper!

Well, this movie is really geared for the female audience. I really can't stand so much crying - but that is the formula that the director was aiming for. I know what Pokwang's character had to go through was detestable but I don't think normal people cry that much! Medyo OA na. Isn't Pokwang's character supposed to be a fighter? Oh well, some formulas just don't change. Bring tissue paper if you're the weeping kind.

Jeremy Ian: Not Another Pinoy Indie Hunk

Jeremy Ian is one of the troika of actors in the movie Daklot. He does look good in the pictures here - just don't let him talk - or act for that matter! Sometimes, the physical appearance is enough. However, he does talk and act in the movie so, if you do get the DVD, better skip those parts. Medyo nakakarindi. Maybe just fast forward to the scenes where he makes out with I forget who now but some of the guys in the movie - probably a customer, probably Rocco Matteo, probably Charles Delgado, I don't really care anymore.

Movie Review: Daklot

Don't be fooled by that picture. That was for another movie last year entitled Bingwit. However, two of the actors there, Charles Delgado and Jeremy Ian are in Daklot. The movie Daklot does not even have any picture on the net to advertise it. Just as well because there's really nothing to advertise here. There is a third actor though, whose name is Rocco Matteo, whose acting is the most wooden among the three. Well, don't be surprised to find all three guys making out with each other. I guess that's the reason why the director made this movie. If you want your three minute - one hundred seventy peso titillation - then this movie might be for you. Better, just get the DVD. Charles practically sleeps with everyone and so does Rocco. You can just fast forward to THOSE scenes if you want and not waste time to watch the flimsy plot (was there one?).

Movie Review: Tahanan

I have been trying to fix my schedule this week so I can at least, watch a movie in the ongoing Bigshot Film Festival at the SM cinemas. Anyway, I was finally able to see two films today, one is the award-winning Donor, and the second one was Tahanan, which starred one of my favorite local actresses, Lauren Young, whom I first saw in Zombadings!

Well, Lauren practically carries the movie and she is ably supported by Mark Gil and this group of really adorable kids! It's actually a pretty decent movie for an erstwhile student film. I like the performance of the two boys, I think Efren and the tall kid. Lauren also does a pretty decent job of showing the conflicts happening to her character especially that her character did not even enjoy having a mother present in her life - and here she is, taking care of a bunch of kids like how a mother would take care of her brood!

Baron Geisler Should Really Get His Act Together

It's really a pity that when you say Baron Geisler - most of the news that you'll get is bad news about his drinking and sexual harassment lawsuits - stuff which really distracts people from what this guy can really do well - act! There has been press releases saying that he has undergone rehab or something like that - but I really hope - for his sake - that he gets his act together.

I really daresay that he's the best actor of his generation - and it would be waste of his immense talent if he just lets his drunkard ways get the best of him. He's not the first alcoholic actor that we know - Hollywood has lots of them - but they get their act together and get a new lease on life. Robert Downey Jr. is an example - and Mickey Rourke.

I am saying this because I watched Donor today in SM Manila - and well, I was really blown away by his performance and moreso, of Meryll Soriano's. I have seen Baron before in "Jay" - another role which he nails perfectly so I am not really surprised that he is very good in Donor. This kid can really deliver if he's concentrating on his role. Well, I hope to hear more good news coming from his personal life soon. He's still young anyway and even if he only gets to play supporting or bit roles - at least he's still acting - and he should stick to it - since he still has a lot to offer everyone!

Impressed with Meryll Soriano

It's a pity really that it was only last year that I started to notice local independent films. There is actually a lot of very good independent movies which, sadly, don't get the movie theatrical run that a movie like Underworld Awakening would get.

Well, today, I watched Donor in SM Manila and I was with a group of college kids and based on the audience reaction, the kids were really into the movie! They really made their reactions known about what the characters onscreen were doing with their lives. This is the first time I saw Meryll Soriano and boy, this girl can act! She just has the gift! Too bad you don't see her in any of those ABS or GMA films. Kayang-kaya niyang pataubin any of the local A-list actresses we have today. I can only think of Eugene Domingo and Ai-Ai who can compete with her but the forte of these two are comedies - a job which they do excellently!

Anyway, you really have to watch Donor if you want to know what I mean. Meryll's performance will really blow you away! It's like you were just watching her character make the life choices that she does and that you were not actually watching a movie! It's THAT GOOD!

Movie Review: Donor

There is an ongoing Big Shot Film Festival at the SM cinemas right now where they are showing some some student films. Among the movies is Donor, which I'm sure is a film NOT done by a student. It's really a pity that this movie did not get any theatrical run two years ago when it was released. It's a fantastic film! It kinda reminds me of the classics of Lino Brocka. I have heard of the director before, Mark Meily, but this is the first time I've seen his work and I love it!! The movie is simple, earnest, very realistic and Meryll Soriano gives a gritty performance as the kidney donor. I'm surprised why she hasn't won any of the local Best Actress awards - this movie should have easily won her a Slam! Oh well....Baron Geisler also gives a great performance here. I really hope he gets his act together. Such a waste of great talent if he doesn't take care of himself....

This is the first time I saw Maja Salavador act, and well, because of that Matteo-Coco brouhaha from months back, I kept reading her name on the papers and online, without actually knowing how she really looks like. Maganda naman pala, and if she's part of that Salvador acting clan, then she has the genes that could propel her to acting glory! Unfortunately, I don't like the way her character was written for her latest movie, My Cactus Heart. Masyadong pacute. A reality check from time to time would be nice, especially among the local rom-coms. Anyway, she has a good screen presence so I'm sure she'll snare some other roles in the future.

Finally Seeing Matteo Giudicelli Act

Since I don't really watch local TV, I haven't seen many of our local actors act in anything so it was great to see My Cactus Heart this week and find out how three of the young leads there act onscreen. Matteo, who is a kapwa- Cebuano like me is actually cute and endearing when he acts, I'm surprised why he's only being used now on film. I just didn't quite warm up to his character though since really, the script of that film was just so-so. The young actors can only do so much to make scenes look cute and I guess Star Cinema was just trying to make a quick buck to please the star-struck young girls market it was trying to capture. I hope to find Matteo, Maja and Xian working with better material soon.

Discovering Xian Lim

I've heard of Xian Lim before but I never bothered to check his pics since, well, even during my college days, I've seen enough hot chinito guys to last me a lifetime - and yeah, kahit sa gym ko sa ABS, marami nang gwapong chinito na unassuming. Anyhow, I finally saw him talk and act as well, in the movie, My Cactus Heart - and he has quite a presence! Gwapo nga naman ang batang ito and he fits the mold of a matinee idol. I won't be surprised if he gets more projects in the future. One asset of his too is his height! Kahit sa big screen may arrive!

Movie Review: Bored with My Cactus Heart

I have no sympathy for characters who cannot make up their minds or who refuse to see a good thing even if their eyes are already wide open! Such is the character being played by the very pretty Maja Salvador. Pretty irritating really. Main reason why I couldn't appreciate anything happening in My Cactus Heart. Except maybe that the three main actors - Maja, Matteo and Xian are such eye candy, you'd just forgive the stinker that they are in. However, this should find a market among women who like any of the three and probably to those who can relate to it. I just hope they were given a much better script or story....

Yul Servo: The Theater Actor

I was able to catch Yul Servo in the one-act play, Isang Araw Sa Karnabal last Sunday and I am not surprised that he can actually act! I remember that he did a film years ago with Nora Aunor, where he played the role of a younger lover to the more mature La Aunor. Well, in this play that I saw, Yul essayed his role very well. It's actually tougher onstage since there are no retakes and people can see your "acting" as it is. He does look really manly in person so I am not surprised why he has been always linked to Piolo. Mark B. and Yul have very macho features in person with their square jaws and endearing smiles. Oh well, I'm just not surprised that Piolo has similar tastes among his men. As for Yul, I don't see any trace of him being gay though, not that it would matter too if he were.

Theo James: The Delectable Vampire in Underworld Awakening

You will not miss Theo James when you watch this movie! He appears one-half into the movie as Kate Beckinsale's character brings her daughter into the coven. He does not appear naked in any of the scenes but you'd instantly know that he has a very hot body! I may have to search for the DVD of the series Bedlam because I would love to see MORE of HIM! People have been saying that he stays shirtless there for 10 minutes. Now, that's really cool!

Kate Beckinsale and the Erect Seth Rogen

If you watched this year's Golden Globe awards, I'm sure you were one of those who gasped and laughed when Seth Rogen matter-of-factly on air that he had a huge reaction just by standing beside Kate Beckinsale! Well, that's the Globes for you - everyone can be raunchy as they want to be! Bet you can't do that in the Oscars!

Anyway, everyone would surely agree with Seth as Kate looked ravishing that night. You could really see that she has maintained the figure that you get to see also in her latest movie, Underworld Awakening! I fell in love with Kate in Serendipity and became even more of a fan when she started doing the Underworld series of movies! She won't be going away soon as she now has a daughter to watch out for in the next Underworld!

Movie Review: Underworld: Awakening and the Mutating Lycans

To those who have been following the Underworld series, the latest installment, Underworld Awakening, should be something they would enjoy a lot. I did! Something happens to the Lycans in this movie which worries the covens of vampires. Also there is some sort of "ethnic cleansing" happening here, where both vampires and werewolves are being exterminated by the humans - who have once again taken ascendancy. Anyway, there is enough action here to keep everyone interested and both the special effects and make-up are topnotch. Kate Beckinsale - who is so super slim here - is a heroine you'd surely be rooting for! You'd be sure there is a follow-up, so don't worry. The last scene made sure of that......

Movie Review: Revisiting Shakespeare in Coriolanus

I was quite surprised that a local distributor decided to show Coriolanus here in Manila. It's not always that we get high-brow films in here. I guess he or she thought that the military-style atmosphere of the movie would bring moviegoers in.

Well, the movie is an updated version of Shakespeare's version of Coriolanus. It is violent and the beginning of the movie is a protracted war scene done with very shaky camera work. You'd also have to listen closely since they are still speaking in the Bard's language but it shouldn't be too hard to understand. Trust Shakespeare to come up with dilemmas and plot twists that would really interest the viewer. I guess that's the reason why his works are timeless.

The ironic thing though is even if this play was written hundreds of years ago, it seems to be quite relevant today! You could transpose all these events to any of the earth-shaking political events today and everything will still play out as if it was current.

Ralph Fiennes, Vanessa Redgrave and Brian Cox are mesmerizing. I still can't believe that the hunky Gerard Butler is doing Shakespeare! This movie is not really the kind of entertainment you'd want for your weekend, but for those who miss Shakespeare, this should be a treat!

Jean Dujardin of "The Artist"

If real-life assassins were as pretty and alluring as Lea Seydoux, there'd be a dearth of red-blooded agents since they would most likely be easy prey to her charming ways! She makes a great assassin in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and she has several great scenes where she gets to show her fighting chops as well as the evil side of her character. I hope to see her in more movies soon - maybe something that would involve her wearing fantastic clothes since she really looks like a model!
