GTM Guided Beach Walk
Join GTM Research Reserve volunteers Rick and Roz Edwards from 9:00 am to 11:00 a.m. for a beach walk at the Guana South beach location. Learn about the animals that call the beach their home as well as seashells and other interesting facts. This is a "Beaches 101" experience that the entire family will enjoy. There is a $3/per vehicle parking fee. After the walk, visit the GTM Research Reserve Environmental Education Center (EEC) or enjoy many miles of trails. Tolomato Cemetery Tours
Come explore the historic markers at the oldest extant cemetery in Florida. The self-guided and docent-led tours are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Tolomato Cemetery is located on Cordova Street, the site of an earlier Franciscan Indian mission (Our Lady of Guadalupe of the Tolomato) in St Augustine. Burials officially ceased in 1884. Visits are free of charge, but visitors are encouraged to offer a donation. All money goes to the preservation and restoration of the cemetery. Anastasia the Great

As Art Basel expands its boundaries now inching into downtown Miami, an inaugural event incorporated a popular theme--rescue animals--and kicked off as Art Zoo. Local artists and dog and cat lovers flocked to the idyllic Finnegan's on the River with its spacious patio and Miami River background. No traffic, no crowds, plenty of parking--this was my favorite Art Basel event and a definite for next year! And all for a great cause!

Created by Hope Gainer of Hope International, the event showcased both artwork of cats and dogs and adoptable dogs from black labrador mix puppies to beagles to chihuahua and more. The event benefitted Paws4You Rescue, a local nonprofit dedicated to saving dogs and cats from euthanasia at the overcrowded local shelter.

While being treated to chilled coconut water, and paella, organic pizza and other food delights, attendees enjoyed a wide range of art mediums from oil paintings to sculptures to pop art to mixed media. A portion of any sale also benefitted the rescue organization.

A highlight was meeting and playing with all the adoptable dogs. This little guy (pictured above) and his siblings were rescued from the local shelter, just minutes before euthanization. Who could resist holding, hugging and smothering these beautiful black puppies with kisses. Their shiny coats dazzled in the sunlight and their personalities were classic lab--friendly and loyal. They were ready to follow you anywhere.

Swimsuit models were on hand to glamorize the event and accessorize the dogs. This chihuahua was abandoned on the street but thankfully rescued. He is young and well trained and he's not a yapper like some little dogs. And he's affectionate, hence is name is Romeo!

Art Basel Miami Beach 2011

It's a cool 70 degrees and Miami Beach is burning with Art Basel fever. This year marks the 10th edition of the America's largest art exhibition. For the mightiest fan, it's six days and sleepless nights of communal art gazing, drinking and fashion revelry, with the occasional purchase.

While the Convention Center draws tens of thousands with its highbrow exhibitors, the concurrent satellite fairs in Wynwood and Midtown (areas in mainland Miami, north of downtown) are increasingly stealing the show. Labeled "funky" or "outrageous", these aren't your grandmother's days of art galleries strolling through deafening silent corridors moving at a snail's pace to admire oil on canvas or a sculpture or two.

"Modern art" has evolutionized into moving art, or art that is constructed temporarily for the moment and dismantled, never to be created again. Art Miami, Pulse (in Overtown's Ice Palace Studio), Red Dot, Scope Miami & Volta are leading names and have an established tradition of cultivating art buyers and curators.

At Scope Miami’s 100,000-square-foot tent in Midtown, about 100 galleries focus on emerging talent set up shop with works that ran the gamut from idyllic landscapes to blow-up sex dolls to portraits that served as satiric odes to George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Miley Cyrus and Michael Jackson.

At Pulse, South Korean artist Hong Sean Jung, with Denver’s David Smith Gallery, had spent a whole day constructing Blank Mirage, a towering, ethereal waterfall of spider web thin black threads — made with a hot glue gun — cascading over another transparent, ladder-like web of fishing line stapled to the wall. At the end of the fair, it will come down, too delicate to move.

"An idea doesn’t exist. Then you make it tangible form, then you take it down and it doesn’t exist any more,” Jang said. “Like magic."

SEVEN is the pioneering collective project organized by the galleries BravinLee programs, Hales Gallery, Pierogi Gallery, Postmasters, P.P.O.W., Ronald Feldman Fine Arts and Winkleman Gallery. They are returning to Miami for the second year, at a new location, from November 29th through December 4th, 2011. With a focus on a collaborative, exhibition-like presentation commingling galleries and artists, SEVEN looks beyond the art fair model to create a new platform for viewing and acquiring works of art.

Inspired by the prevailing need for a more intimate, personal way to engage visitors during the Miami fair week, the members of SEVEN come together to create an environment where artworks may be experienced in a curated context and interested parties can have a substantial, quality interaction with the dealers. The emphasis on cooperation rather than competition relates to the founding days of these established, long-running galleries, which despite over 120 years of combined experience, remain true to the non-conformist, adventurous nature of their beginnings in the New York and London art worlds.

SEVEN's new location, a 15,000 square foot warehouse at 2637 North Miami Ave at NE 27th Street in the Wynwood district, situates the project in the heart of other major art fairs as well as walking distance to the Rubell Collection.

The St. Johns County Convention Center and Renaissance World Golf Village Resort will showcase trees and wreaths decorated and donated by local businesses, organizations, families and friends from the community. Gingerbread Pirate Ship sails to Amelia Island

Ahoy there maties! Your patchless eye does not deceive nor your trusty spyglass (what today we may call a one-eyed telescope). The SS Amelia Gingerbread Pirate ship is scheduled to dock in the lobby of the Ritz Carlton on Amelia Island on Wednesday, November 23.

This gingerbread vessel is a tribute to the legends and lore of historic Amelia Island, ruled briefly by the privateer Luis Arly in the early 19th century. The towering gingerbread structure features a mast with sails and a crow's nest rising from the hotel lobby. Edible details include a gingerbread cannon armed with chocolate cannonballs, gingerbreak pirate captain, and a treasure chest overflowing with candied bounty. The ship is made from 1,200 pounds of sugar and 3,000 eggs. Twelve pastry chefs logged more than 350 hours in the creation of this masterpiece. The docking of this ship will be televised live with a children's chorus.

Amelia Island’s official start of the holiday season begins when the resort’s forty-foot tree is illuminated. Over 200,000 lights glitter throughout the grounds. This festive evening includes a fundraiser for YMCA, entertainment, holiday cookies and hot apple cider, Santa’s arrival and a spectacular fireworks display.

Festivities begin at 5:30pm in the courtyard and is complimentary and open to the public.

If you can't wait for that Christmas feast, enjoy a holiday dinner prepared by the finest chefs.

Immediately following the Tree Lighting Ceremony, Santa, Mrs. Claus, elves and reindeer will be present to share a dinner in a festive, magical atmosphere. During my walking tour in South Beach, one day appeared a green neon sign at a street corner that read "Naked ...." neighboring a pub to the left and across the street of another pub. No it's not the beginning of a Red light district for leprechauns. But as I continued walking I could read the entire signage "Naked Pizza". Now that caught my attention.

So what makes this pizza "naked"? As some "at home" chefs and foodies may guess, the concept here is to strip down to what's natural and make pizza with the purest ingredients.

The dough is made from a blend of 10 whole grains and seeds with the addition of probiotics. Pies are topped with tomato sauce and mozzarella with no preservatives, sugar or trans fat. A healthy pizza? Could it be? It's South Beach--perhaps the largest concentration of gyms, yoga centers, smoothie shops, fresh and organic supermarket stores, and buff bodies. A healthy pizza joint? I'm surprised it did not open sooner!

The health aspect is not enough. The manager knows a thing or two about creating a pie that's good for you and flavorful. As the former international consultant for Domino's Pizza, Jurgens Richter introduces a pizza with black beans, jalapeno and Cheddar with a side of pico de gallo (zesty ground beef). Not to be outdone by the Ragin' Cajun with sausage, chicken and peppers.

Customers can order at the counter and watch their pizza being made. It emerges bubbling from the gas conveyor oven. Eat standing at the counter or get takeout. Choose your crust from original (medium thick), skinny (crisp) or gluten-free made from rice flour. Sizes are 10, 12 and 14 inches and start at $4.99 for a naked 10-inch pizza with each addition ranging from $1.49-$1.89.

So where is this nudist pie place? Be there on Friday when two new films open to the public at the World Golf Hall of Fame Imax Theatre. Legends of Flight 3D takes viewers to dizzying heights and terrifying lows as it explores aircraft evolution of the past 100 years. Rescue 3D gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look into the hard, but inspiring work of saving lives. 2009 Winners: Sand Bar

You know you thought about it especially on those rough mornings--to go to work in pajamas. Well you're dream is closer than your teddy bear as the clock ticks for the annual Coconut Grove Bed Race this upcoming Labor Day weekend.

The racing tradition goes back 30 years. Teams consist of five members with four racers and one rider hitched to the headboard. Speed wins, of course, but additional awards will be given for theme, creativity and décor.

The bedlam begins September 3 (Saturday) with the Pajama Pub Crawl through participating bars and restaurants. The next day, September 4, is race day starting with Kids Storytelling Time, the Waiters/Waitresses Obstacle Course, a Pit Row Parade of decorated beds on display, and finally the 1/8th-mile madness through the heart of the Grove. Afterwards, merchants will host a post-race celebration with live music and interactive exhibits.

Miami Spice, runs the months of August and September and now in its 10th year, features over 100 upscale restaurants that offer discounted dining for a three course meal. Lunch is $22 and dinner is $35 (excluding tax and gratuities) which translates into savings ranging from 30-50%. It's an affordable way to dine out while sampling Miami's finest culinary restaurants.

So here are my picks!
La Marea at the Tides hotel. Now while it's official that the most exclusive hotel on Ocean Drive is for sale, a little birdie told me it was sold. Therefore don't be surprised if the restaurant is slow or empty. While no promotions may abuzz this restaurant, trust me it's open for business and still my favorite seafood restaurant if you don't mind the quiet serenity. The sea turtle shells that line the walls still catch my breath every time.

The Tudor House. This unassuming building from afar grows appealing as you approach it. The restaurant spills over onto the terrace with dreamy contemporary design. The Miami Spice Menu is varied with both American cuisine (Buttermilk Fried Chicken), and a Cuban sandwich for that latin flavor. I recently dined there so CLICK HERE for my review. The most memorable were the mini pretzel appetizers and the English pea soup!

The Forge. While I have not had the opportunity yet to try their Miami Spice menu, friends and clients rave about it. This former steak king still reigns supreme in menu, decor, ambience and A-list customers.
