While Miami is known for glistening beaches, upscale restaurants, and even fancy strip clubs one might think a venue with a name like the House of Food Porn is a racy combination of the latter two.

It's not what you think, it's even better.

Nestled in the neighborhood of Little Haiti, a far cry from neighboring upscale downtown Miami, House of Food Porn (HOFP) is a diamond in the rough. Approaching the unpretentious outpost, one rings the doorbell. A cheery hostess greets you and upon entering, you are transported to a dimly lit seductive but alluring concept.

UNIQUE SETTING & LAYOUT

Immediately guests notice an absence of garish decor but instead an elegant theme, in contrast to the suggestive name. The setting is small, intimate, attractive, and elegant. Black and gold damask design wallpaper line the back wall, a crystal chandelier dangling from the centerpiece of sheaths of red chiffon draped across the ceiling evoking a sultan's palace; even the serving dishes and cocktail glasses are hand blown glass by artists in Europe. It's part regal, part faraway lands, and part boudoir.

As one continues to survey the landscape, the U-shape table setting is the next indicator of an interactive experience. While one is not dining with the chef as on a luxury cruise line, the twist is the chef is a hands-on cook. There are no other staff preparing the food. You see him at his kitchen counter from your high-top table. This is a dining experience to have the opportunity to engage in conversation with the chef, hostess and those around you. Ten guests have a private audience with the celebrated chef.

PERSONAL & PERSONALIZED

Name cards in scroll lettering are regally placed in their card holder; Then the hostess, Nicky addresses guests by their names having memorized them (just like any first-class service) and sashays into center court distributing artistically presented plates of food, in one fell swoop, making it look effortless one wonders if she's truly human or a fairy gliding on air.

INTRIGUE

This is not your typical restaurant. There are no menus. Reservations are required and the guest only chooses the number of courses and any cocktails options. With an open mind and adventurous foodie spirit, the guest welcomes the mystery of what he or she will eat (and drink) and is encouraged to take their time savoring flavors and deciphering the ingredients. In my first experience years ago, I used a blindfold. None is needed this time. It would take away from admiring the beautifully curated presentation. The ingredients are masterfully blended that one cannot tell from looks alone what they are about to indulge in.

ENTERTAINING

Like any great experience, a story emerges. In the beginning the chef unravels his personal journey of becoming a chef and how the "Shushi" roll was conceived. Once the food is served and guests have a chance to take a few bites and offer their guesses, the chef steps into center stage and reveals the ingredients. The guests are often surprised at the combinations and sometimes confess to a dislike for a certain food and are amazed they didn't taste it. Herein lies the genius of a master chef.

It's a whirlwind tour of flavors, cultures all in one roll.

The House of Food Porn checks every box for me with one exception, lack of parking. However, while I would normally discount the restaurant for this fact, the added perks and value of a Membership Program and the restaurant regularly giving back to the community, left me saying, "who cares about parking when you have all this"? Moreso, each couple enjoys a bottle of wine (on top of the cocktails), and it is strongly recommended to take an Uber ride for one's safety.

LOYALTY

This was my second time dining there since they first opened in 2018. The improvements were notable. I knew I wanted to return with visitors and friends who are true foodies. For their loyalty, repeat guests can now join a VIP membership in the form of a "Passport" and eat free several times a year (for life) depending on the package one purchases along with a bevy of other exclusive perks. What a brilliant idea indeed! I never heard of high-end restaurants offering this. As a huge fan, it only made economic sense to invest in one. But this is not a digital program. It's a physical passport with your photo. Old School. I absolutely love it. That elated feeling when you grab your passport knowing you are going on a trip. In this case to a destination known for savory food, great people and a fun time. Regular visitors to Miami from out of state have purchased it as well. The feeling of inclusiveness and that you have a family that you enjoy spending time with, sharing a meal, stories, and laughing together is the cherry on the top. Oh no wait. There's more!

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

HOFP physically volunteers and gives back to the community. In a nutshell, they discovered many stray cats in Miami, and started to care for them. The effort has evolved into a full-blown nonprofit organization. They created a private sanctuary in Key Largo for the cats, Homeless Kitty Haven Sanctuary. The cost to care for many cats (food, supplies and vet bills), are daunting $30k-$40k a year. Hence the VIP membership program, the Passport program was born. The purchase goes entirely to the nonprofit (an official IRS designated 501c3 organization), and it's a tax write off for the guest. At this point, I could not get out my credit card fast enough. I can now eat for free at HOFP for life (certain restrictions apply), while my investment goes to the care of former homeless cats who will live happily ever after in a spacious white houseboat with plenty of windows for sunshine puddles and viewing birds and nature. It's a win-win.

If truth be told (as we take pride in authentic reviews), Miami is gaining ill fame for expensive restaurants where the food and experience do not live up to the price. Not in this case. House of Food Porn is rightfully the number one upscale dining experience in Miami on both Trip Advisor and Yelp. The magic is performed by only two individuals who pour their heart, soul and sweat into this business.

For the first time ever, architecture festival, Open House Worldwide, will take place on Miami Beach and around the surrounding Miami area on March 1-2, 2024. Open House Miami will include a showcase of Miami Beach's most notable buildings, design and more, and is free and open to the public, providing attendees access to over 50 individual experiences in 15 distinct neighborhoods with support from 75+ partners. The FRIENDS™ Experience has made its way to Aventura Mall in Miami, Florida! This interactive pop-up, originally created for the show's 25th anniversary, offers fans a chance to step inside the world of FRIENDS™ like never before. Here are some exciting highlights:

Celebrating on March the 5th, 305 is the original area code of Miami (and once upon a time the only area code for the entire state of Florida). As the state population grew, other cities gained a new area code. Miami as the largest city, retained the coveted 305 area code. Over the years the city evolved with influences from Cuban and other Hispanic and Caribbean cultures. Drinking Cuban coffee at 3:05pm is one of them. Calle Ocho Festival is an afternoon-long street fair festival held once a year in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood as part of the Lent festivities and is commonly known as “a signature event that celebrates the city’s cultural heritage.” The festival had originally started out as being “a venue for introducing non-Hispanic Miamians to their Cuban neighbors” but in the past years, it has evolved to celebrate the diversity and evolvement of Latino cultures. June is about nature, food and music. One of my favorite events combines nature and a good deed to marine life. So while it may get warmer outside for some activities, the ocean is right there to take a dip and cool off. Read on!

June 3, World Ocean Day, W Hotel South Beach

The United Nations, in 1992, declared June 8 as the official World Ocean Day. The goal was to remind us how the oceans sustain life on the planet. First more than half of the oxygen in the atmosphere comes from the ocean (primarily from phytoplankton). Second it regulates global climate and patterns. Third, it feeds 3.3 billion people and many economies depend on it. Up to 80 percent of the life on the planet is found in the ocean, and 10 percent of its species are thought to be at risk of extinction.

The goal is to get people to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes it but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life.

8am- 12pm a variety of activities from open water exhibition swim, beach pilates, a ceremonial paddle-out, and beach cleanup offers something for everyone.

5pm-7pm On Saturday evening, the celebration continues in W South Beach’s Great Room with the Sheroes of the Ocean panel discussion beginning at 5PM, followed by a cocktail reception and film screening of the San Francisco-based International Ocean Film Festival at 7PM. The Sheroes panel will highlight the stories of inspiring women from the activist, scientific and creative space, who are engaged with the preservation of our ocean. June 11, South Beach Chamber Ensemble with Award Winning Cuban Poet, Carlos Pintado

Every week the Ocean Drive Association hosts free music concerts to the public. Truly. It doesn't get any better than this.

As adept in contemporary as well as classical music, the South Beach Chamber Ensemble promotes and performs chamber music in all its diverse forms.

Carlos Pintado is a Cuban American writer, playwright and award-winning poet. His book "Autoretrato en Azul" received the prestigious San Jordi International Prize for Poetry. His book "El Azar y los Tesoros" was a finalist for Spain's Adonais Prize in 2008. His work has been translated into English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish and German.

June 17, World Sea Turtle Cleanup Day in Miami Beach

While June 16 is the official day, on Saturday the 17th, turtle and nature enthusiasts will gather to help clean up the beaches to protect sea turtles. This year's observance is particularly important as it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act. This landmark legislation protects more than 160 marine species including sea turtles.

A number of factors are leading to their decline including climate change, warming conditions, sea level rises, marine debris, vessel strikes and fishing gear entanglements. Conservationists have created a framework to address these threats and help protect sea turtles. You can be a part of the solution.

At Haulover Beach in partnership with Miami Dade County Parks, the events starts with registration at 8:30am. At 9am armed with provided gloves and garbage bags and a sense of purpose, participants will tackle cleanup at the shoreline.

Around 10am, the beach transforms into a hub of celebration and education. The beach wakes up with the waft of food trucks and delicious treats. Meet marine biologists and conservation experts to expand your knowledge about these magnificent creatures through interactive displays workshops, and presentations.

But wait! There's more. An auction with remarkable prizes from turtle inspired artwork to nature tours is another way to contribute directly to conservation efforts and have a special keepsake.

305 Day is the unofficial holiday in Miami to celebrate all that is Miami. So where does the name come from? 305 was once the area code for the entire State of Florida. With population growth, came new area codes in different cities. 305 area code remained connected to the most populous city, Miami. So, if you're a #786 area code resident, well let's just say it's cooler to be a 305er.

The tradition was started by 305 Cafecito, a local coffee shop in Coral Gables (Miami) back in 2014. However, in 2013, it was declared that the official Cuban coffee time in Miami is 3:05pm. At 3pm we prepare the Cuban coffee, and five minutes later we serve, share and drink it!

On Sunday, March 5, the main event will be held at the Wynwood Marketplace with many festivities including food, arts and entertainment. Address: 2250 NW 23rd Street, 33127

Coinciding with 305 Day, at 12pm starts the Miami Sneaker Festival, at Electric Lady, 144 NW 23rd Street. Miami, 33127. No sneakerhead should miss this event to buy, trade or sell sneakers. If you are on the hunt for fresh kicks, this event is for you!

In our ever growing interconnected world, we embrace and celebrate Hispanic multiculturalism this month from September 15 to October 15. However, anytime is a great time to visit Miami, if you are from out of town, and immerse in this mosaic culture. Even Hispanic residents often discover a fascinating bit of history or recollect fond memories from childhood. Here are three unique activities to partake in and enjoy.

To really learn about the first major wave of Hispanic immigrants (Cubans) that started to transform Miami in the 1960's, I recommend the original Little Havana Cultural Walking Tour by Little Havana Tours. They are the first boutique tour operator to offer daily cultural tours fourteen years ago, long before tourism exploded in 2018. Tour guides live in the neighborhood and are deeply entrenched or connected with the local people and establishments. The tour logically starts with history, and kicks off with a freshly pressed tropical fruit drink for a warm Miami day. These small groups continue down Cuban Memorial Way for more history and details about changes in the neighborhood. Then guests continue the famed "Calle 8" or eighth street, for other cultural highlights such as apparel, foods, cigars, music and dance.

The walking tour lasts about 2 hours and 15 minutes is very reasonably priced. For more food, they offer two other tours including sit down hot meal, which other tours do not offer. This is definitely not your cookie cutter tour. Guides are highly trained with in-depth knowledge of all aspects, including political history, religions like Santeria, and it's a woman who knows the most about cigars and rum. More on that below.

Learn the symbolism of the roosters, real ones and six foot ones

Today Little Havana is more than Cuban immigrants. Many residents hail from central America especially Nicaragua and Honduras. It is truly a mosaic in motion. A kaleidoscope. To escape the tourist beaten path, they offer a Rooster tour which takes you to areas only locals frequent. On this tour, guests will savor central American foods. We don't want to spoil the surprise by sharing all the details.

Now if are limited on time or have tight schedule and just want to eat great food, we have some hidden gems to spotlight.

First is Yambo, a Nicaraguan restaurant in Little Havana. It's such a local secret, they have no Google page or website, but they do have a Facebook page for fans. Just the outside is an Instagram worth photo opp. It looks like part carnival, part farm with giant roosters and hose statues as pictured above.

The second one is El Porton de la Flaca in Doral for great Colombian food.

For a spectacular ending, from September 26- Oct 2 is the Billboard Latin Music Week, an industry gathering to hold workshops, conversations with experts/producers/artists on creating and promoting music.

Each night is a concert En Vivo with artists like Bizzarap, Romeo Santos, Nicky Jam and so many more. General Admission tickets are still on sale for $645.

The world's sexiest fashion event of the year is in Miami every July. Miami Swim Week.

As a native Floridian who grew up with swimming pools and beaches, and a fashion enthusiast in my adult years, Miami Swim Week is one of my favorite weeks of the year!

Throughout the week fashion shows are held with the latest swimwear design and fashion. The event brings in over 30 international designers, artists and droves of models. Fashionistas, buyers, influencers and industry gather at various venues (restaurants, hotels, museums, art galleries) for seven evenings of fashion, cocktails, and art.

On Wednesday I attended a grand opening event at Sea Spice restaurant near my home in downtown Miami. I love these settings because it was not crowded, and it is a great opportunity to meet other enthusiasts and network with other like-minded businesswomen while brunching.

This year MSW raised the bar in DEI--Diversity, Equality and Inclusivity. Models were women of all nationalities, races, height, weight, including a pregnant woman and a woman with a prosthetic limb. Everyday women. Love it!

For the final event, I attended an event featuring a favorite swimshop Lux Isle. The theme was "wild and free".

Orchids in Paradise

What does "paradise" mean to you? It can come in many different forms for different people. For some it is pristine beaches and palm trees, or striking mountains framed by colorful flowers or trees with fall foliage. For green thumbs it is flowers.

South Florida's paradise extends beyond our shores. Sometimes it is well hidden. One Sunday, my mother, a floral aficionado, and I took a road trip to Homestead, Florida about 45 minutes south of Miami to visit an orchid establishment.

R.F. Orchids is home to the world's finest vandaceous orchids, and one of South Florida's most beautiful tropical gardens.

As we pulled into the grounds, we were greeted by exotic ferns and other green plants. We immediately sensed this was a well kept secret paradise. Well a secret to us city folks.

This is not an attraction but an orchid greenhouse and shop. The letters R.F. stand for the initials of the owner, Robert Fuch.

We can see why.

RF Orchids boasts an enormous selection of orchid species, hybrids, and meristems, as well as Asian objets d'art and unique gifts.

Whether you are a novice or an experienced grower, the staff is there to help you choose the perfect plant or answer questions.

They offer free escorted walking tours of the private garden at 11am and 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting.

As we wandered away from the greenhouse we encountered a gazebo, hidden waterfall and pavilion for private events. Who knew?!

The pavilion is stocked with a kitchen sink and refrigerator and plenty of space to host large crowds and dancing. Will post a video soon. This gives me an idea of where to host my mother's 80th birthday next year.

As we left, friendly but silent garden animals watch us exit the grounds. Such a mystical place.

Virtual Experiences, the New Way to Travel in 2020

Travel is important for many of us to disconnect and escape from our immediate world. To absorb new sights, sounds, tastes, aromas and knowledge. The year 2020 changed all this due to the pandemic. With a longing to travel, that only left online and virtual experiences. But would it be enjoyable? With an open mind, I knew I would make the most of it.

Adhering to safety guidelines, sheltering at home, I learned to travel virtually. I was here and there. At home and in other city at the same time. Sitting in a quiet room at home on a comfortable chaise lounge, I placed blinders to block out the visuals and sounds around me so I could focus on the screen in front of me. The money earmarked for a physical vacation instead went to the purchase of a 60" TV. That flatscreen on my wall would be my magic carpet ride in discovering Florida at the height of a worldwide lockdown.

The Benefit of Virtual Travel

Florida is my home state and I have been longing to do a road trip, something I have not done in several years. Sure it's not the same as traveling in person, but there were other benefits. For one it allowed more one-on-one interaction and conversation with people at the site, that often you only hear a one-way presentation in person. It also afforded me up close views of fascinating animals, people, plants, fauna and incredible bird's eye views of beaches, cities, towns. This leads me to the next best advantage. The virtual tours or experiences are great planning tools for a physical vacation when the time is right.

1. The Clearwater Marina Aquarium

Who doesn't love Dolphins? I wanted to see dolphins but not in an amusement park. Searching for a rescue and rehabilitation center that also allowed the public to witness and learn, I found the Clearwater Marina Aquarium. On their Facebook page, the Animal Care Team went live daily at 11:30am during Covid lockdown. We were able to meet Winter, the dolphin that was rescued from a crab line entanglement requiring her to get a prosthetic tail. Trainers worked closely with her during her transition and continues to thrive at CMA along with her companion Hope, another rescued dolphin. This is a great learning experience for adults and families with children. During the school year, the CMA created lesson plans for Grades 1-5 as part of a science curriculum. What a great idea!

An advantage of these earlier online experiences, is that they were free. So I could visit my new friends Winter & Hope multiple times online at no cost. The second benefit was the access to trainers and staff. This would not happen at the site before COVID.

This is a place I will definitely return to and bring my 7 year old nephew who is crazy about whales and dolphins.

Alright so this was a live Facebook event, not so much a virtual experience but again it did allow for plenty of closeups with the dolphins and extensive Q&A with staff.

2. The Sunken Gardens

St. Petersburg, Florida

Growing up in Florida, I spent a lot of time playing outdoors and visiting nature parks more than amusement parks. Back then there was only Disney World and Sea World. Standing in long lines in high heat and humidity was no "walk in the park".

The Sunken Gardens caught my eye for its active Facebook page full of fascinating online tours, classes and sessions. It is the oldest roadside park (100 years) in Florida and home to 50,000 exotic plants.

In late March and throughout April Sunken Gardens offered free online vegetable gardening classes, While the pandemic discourages leaving our homes and spurred job loss and less income for basic necessities, there is a trend to grow our own vegetables and food source in backyards.

From there it was a feeding frenzy of information about exotic plants and flamingos. Sunken Gardens is borderline obsessed with flamingos (in a healthy way) that they even purchased a flock to live at the historic gardens. I can't blame them. Since I was a little girl I have been enamored by flamingos and always wondered why they were not the State bird of Florida. That's a blog post for another day!

I have to say the West Coast of Florida is infatuated with sea life and flamingos. Below is a public art masterpiece scheduled to unveil in November 2020 for the main terminal at the Tampa airport. Sacramento has its rabbit. Denver has its mustang, Doha its teddy bear and soon Tampa will have its flamingo.

Dance Lessons & Comedy Magic Show

As I felt odd to be sedentary while "traveling", I wondered if any establishment or attraction offered a more interactive virtual experience where I would use my senses. I soon discovered virtual dance classes at the Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. (I see a pattern emerging with top experiences all on the west coast of Florida). Music and dance programs were offered online and continue with great fanfare. Music and body movement--now that's my cup of tea!

For example, on Sunday, August 9, and Wednesday August 12 is PIFF THE MAGIC DRAGON a live interactive comedy and magic show. It's offered via Zoom broadcast from Las Vegas, and tickets are $37+ for as many people in a household. This is sure to make you laugh and offer much relief from repeats on television programming. A great way to support live theater, shows, concerts, etc.

These online experiences all happened to be on the west coast of Florida. Now I am anxious to take a road trip there this year and probably will once they open to the public. I have to commend the city of St. Petersburg and Clearwater Florida for their quick transition and innovative ideas for online and virtual experiences.

You've heard of "Champagne Wishes and Caviar Dreams". Welcome to my new hideaway. A Champagne hideaway. My new escape from the urban beat of south beach or rustling of downtown. It's Le Sirenuse a champagne bar and restaurant in Miami Beach.

I discovered this gem on Instagram this past summer. The second I saw it was in Miami Beach, I knew that would be the location for my next birthday celebration.

I could not believe this place existed, a hidden gem. A blend of Mediterranean, Moroccan, and island living. The white walls and arches, contrasted by dark wooden beam vault ceiling with intricate woodwork, the giant palm frond wicker back chairs, and mosaic tile of South Spain or North Africa. It had an airy island feel, exuding a subtle wealth reminding me of upper echelon Brits in colonial India or Caribbean islands. This was magical. This would become my new special place.

What made it more amazing was the history and then the food. The past and the present.

Soon I learned this was the original Surf Club, a private club for the wealthy in the 1930's. Guests ranging from Gary Cooper, Frank Sinatra, The Rat Pack, Douglas MacArthur, Winston Churchill, the Duke & Duchess of Windsor, and Elizabeth Taylor, visited the Surf Club. It was tire tycoon Harvey Firestone that opened it in Gatsby-ish flair on New Year's Eve in the Depression. Speaking of extravagant, in its heyday, one would find kayaks in the pool, liquor on the beach during Prohibition, black tie boxing dinners, and even tables all made of ice for themed galas.

The exterior surprisingly is insignificant in detail. No doubt not to draw attention to guests. So it was easy to miss the building and drive passed it. Just another white building in a sea of concrete hotels and condos. No colorful garden or impressive sign like the iconic Eden Roc. Upon entering, it was a different world. Tropical, cool, artistic, inviting

Hotelier Antonio Sersale is acclaimed for the Le Sirenuse Resort in Positano, Italy and the Miami location is his first venture in the U.S.

It is this bar that caught my attention on Instagram. The emerald green white marble top bar with gold accent.

The food follows its Italian Neopolitan roots but adapts to Miami ingredients. The Chef also hails from Positano. Both owner and chef considered Miami refined but informal, like Positano. Recalling my visit to the Amalfi coast, I have to agree.

For Brunch in October on Saturday it was not busy yet we did need a reservation. The best time to visit Miami is October, early November, the off season before the madness of tourist season. We had the place to ourselves practically that the waiter was so delighted to have a group of local ladies. Looking around there were a few other customers and one large corporate group visiting.

The tables were set with fine linens and hand blown glasses from Venetian Carlo Moretti. I call the color, Mediterranean blue.

For the slower season, even though Miami Spice ended in September, Le Sirenuse offered their own Summer Fare. A three course brunch for $45 and a flight of wine for an additional $25. Their dinner preset menu was $130 for five courses.

The winner surprisingly was the Halibut which easily won high praise over the Chilean Seabass. Perhaps due to the fact the former was much more plump than the seabass which came out thinner and not as flavorful. Side dishes of zucchini with parmesan was a hit.

It was the wine pairing that really impressed me. Fine selection and offering with the preset lunch menu. Oh and dessert. Very happy with the lemon sponge cake.

The food was very enjoyable and would definitely return for more Champagne and Birthday wishes.

Rums of Puerto Rico

Did you know that Puerto Rico is the capital of rums? It's no wonder we get the tropical sensation of wearing a wide brimmed straw hat, sipping a cocktail on a Caribbean island. Rum is historically an island product brimming with history, warmth, spice and the sweetness of its source--sugar cane.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting with the representatives of the Puerto Rican tourism government in town for an educational/marketing campaign about the Rums of Puerto Rico, a division of the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company (PRIDCO).

While Puerto Rico still recovers from the aftermath of hurricane Maria in 2017, it strives to focus on its core strengths, one is tourism the other is rum. With the expansion of mature luxurious expressions, rum is no longer labeled a"good time" quick party spirit.

While rum is produced in over 80 countries, Puerto Rico is responsible for exporting 70% of the rum consumed in the U.S. As drinkers age so does their palate for a more sophisticated rum. Therefore Rums of Puerto Rico was wise to ensure the Americans were aware that rum was evolving into a higher end spirit. It's not just for mixing and sipping pina coladas and mojitos anymore. Swirling, sniffing and tasting these finer rums in pure form, ranks them high with cognacs and brandy.

The Puerto Rican Rum Standard

The representative started with a general overview of rum making on the island. In touting their benchmark standard, the Rums of Puerto Rico claims that no other country follows their high standards of processing and craftmanship. Let's do a "rum down":

Ingredients. The rum must be made from quality sugar cane molasses. Other countries use primarily the sugar cane juice.
Distillation. Here they use columns made of pop steel called "Alambique".
Aging. This is the most important process. All rums must be aged minimum one year in American oak barrels.
Blending.
Filtering.

For our tasting and lesson, we sampled four rum brands Don Q, Bacardi, Ron de Barrilito and Trigo. In Hispanic style we started from right to left.

Trigo, Reservea Aneja Rum

The first one up was Trigo Reserva Aneja Rum. We examined the color, the legs and flavor. Trigo started in 1953. This particular rum, light body, is aged at least 12 years in American white oak barrels normally used for Bourbon. It is bottled in a hand blown decanter bottle, to signify a master jewel in a collection of rums. Drinking it pure, it was definitely strong.

Next was Ron de Barrilito (translated "the barrel of rum"). This was my favorite blend and story. A full body rum aged in sherry casks from Spain. As the story goes Pedro Fernandez returned to Bayamon, Puerto Rico in 1871 after studying engineering in France for learning to craft aged spirits. In 1880 after perfecting his craft he created the first blend of rum and served it straight from the "barrelito" (barrel). While the family served other blends from a bottle as was more appropriate, guests kept asking for the rum from the "barrelito". This is the favorite rum in Puerto Rico for its simple process and historical roots. Nothing has changed since 1880. They still make small batches, utilizing the exact same methods and even the same label, and bottle labels placed by hand. Amazing.

Bacardi

Next was the recognizable brand Bacardi. While the Bacardi family originally started rum distillery in Cuba, sensing the rising tension during the Batista era, they began building distilleries in Puerto Rico. There they fled after the Castro revolution and continued their rum making. Bacardi is the number one selling rum brand in the world. This particular superior blend was aged 10 years.

It was sold to the City of Ponce in 2001 and now serves as a public museum and cultural venue

Last but definitely not least was the Don Q, the best selling rum in Puerto Rico. In 1865 the family of Don Juan Serralles opened a rum manufacturer at the plantation Hacienda Mercedita (which he named after his wife Mercedes). After importing a still from France, Don Juan produced various local rum brands most of which were short lived. Inspired by the success of other rum producers in the island, the family decided to launch a refined brand, Don Q in 1932 to export. It became so popular it rivaled Bacardi who locals considered too harsh or a foreign brand (headquarters for Bacardi was in Cuba at the time; since the 1960's Bacardi has had its headquarters in Bermuda). Then in the 1960's Don Q was available in most of Puerto Rico's supermarket chains.

With the growth of premium rums there is a price point to match. Bottles can average $50USD or more depending on the age of the rum.

Now you are probably thinking, one needs a nice cigar to complement a fine rum. Indeed you are correct. You're also in luck. Tortillas and Queso dish on Secret Food Tour in South Beach

There's a new food tour in town. The Secret Food Tours. Recently I had the pleasure of taking this new culinary experience which launched a couple of months ago. Instead of the usual haunts like Ocean Drive or Wynwood, it was refreshing to learn this tour was in the SoFi area--south of 5th Street in South Beach.

SoFi is the latest hot spot for trendy and high end restaurants and without the madness of the party crowd typical of Ocean Drive. On this Secret Food Tour we visited the newest restaurant, the oldest restaurant and also restaurants representing cultural influences in Miami. The ticket price was $69 and included the typical five tastings of a food tour. I opted to include the cocktail package for an additional $35 for three cocktails.

So what was my overall impression? Well, as my readers and friends know, I offer an honest opinion and review. No one from the tour company asked me to write this blog post. So you'll just have to read through this post to find out!

Before I continue, a note: I purposefully will not reveal the restaurants as that takes away from the element of surprise.

Our group included a couple from Chicago and another from north east coast both in their mid 50's. I nice small group, just perfect as I really dislike large group tours. We met our tour guide Natalia at 5:30pm at South Pointe Park and after a brief introduction, we walked to our first restaurant, the newest one. Shortly after we were seated our first cocktail arrived. It was black, or dark gray. But Natalia had already told us the name --something with Bourbon and charcoal. Yes charcoal! While the color was not aesthetically appealing it was absolutely delicious. And my favorite cocktail of the tour. The flower we learned, was called the clitoria. It certainly was the perfect color and shape to adorn our dull looking drink. Sipping our cocktails, our group immediately bonded. We were thoroughly enjoying ourselves and the tour had only begun. Great first impression.

Then the first dish was served, called Queso, which means "cheese" in Spanish. Natalia cleverly waited for us to sample it before revealing the ingredients. It was a shocker.

We then walked to the second stop, the oldest restaurant in South Beach. Here we were not served the signature food item but surprisingly another award-winner.

Fried Chicken! I never knew this restaurant offered fried chicken and learned it was invented by the Scottish. Who knew! The recipe uses buttermilk but no seasoning which was later introduced by the African culture. The skin is thin but crispy. Very curious, I did a little research. Famous Miami chef Michelle Bernstein is quoted,

"This is the crunchiest fried chicken in Miami most people don't know about it and costs next to nothing. It's the perfect appetizer to my dinner."

Then there is chef Michael Schwartz,

"There's something about the way they fry it. The skin is crispy and thin but still really fatty and flavorful at the same time. Hands down, the best fried chicken I've ever had".

Our next stop was several blocks away which was ideal as I was getting full early on and the walk would aid my digestion. While walking Natalia our guide shared some history of the area, the movers and shakers in the restaurant industry, and touched on the Art Deco architecture.

Then we arrived to a restaurant that is well known in Miami, a humble but cultural icon in west Miami that finally arrived on the beach side. Ketchup red and mustard yellow chairs surrounded by fresh tropical fruits cheerfully greeted us. My taste buds were dancing, in anticipation of flavors to come.

Stop three for Cuban food

Here we drank a tropical fruit shake typical of Cuba, the largest population and influence in Miami. For the food, we were served chicharron. Fried fatty pork chunks. It has to be exclaimed here, #foodgasm! The best chicharron I have ever consumed! Cuban culture is known for pork, whether it's roasted or fried, the best pork is Cuban style. And Natalia, while not Cuban, does have Hispanic and culinary background to expertly explain this phenomenon. Oh and we also had Cuban sandwiches. A must have in Miami.

Stop number four was a restaurant I had not visited in over ten years and was thrilled it still existed. It also speaks to another cultural influence in Miami. Every dining room still has bright hand painted walls and tables. A happy place indeed.

This stop unveiled the "secret" food dish. A fried meat dish. Very tasty! I have not had this meat in a very long time.

But the rum punch was equally satisfying and included passion fruit and another very rare fruit that is leading in research as a cure to killing cancer cells, soursop or guanabana in Spanish.

So by now you picked up on the fact, this tour is best enjoyed by true foodies who have no dietary or caloric restrictions. Savor every bite and flavor.

And yet the fifth stop awaited us. Thankfully a long walk offered a reprieve for my gastronomic indulgence. The final stop was on the water. The only downside, it is already dark at 8pm and the water view is definitely best at daytime. But it was a beautiful evening.

For the final cocktail the mojito was prepared. Sadly I have to report this was the worst mojito. As a mojito connoisseur and having tasted many at bars known and obscure, I know a quality mojito. But this is an easy fix if the restaurant would use real sugar to make it on a weeknight when it was slow. Simple syrup is often used when bars are busy. Also most guests are not as familiar with this cocktail so they will not be as disappointed. Then came dessert, key lime pie. A native Floridian, I grew up on key lime pies. True key limes are smaller than the regular limes you find in supermarkets. This was indeed the best key lime pie I have ever tasted and was not as tart for my preference. I quickly forgot about the mojito. The pie was a perfect ending.

Our group kept chatting that we finally ended close to 9pm. Yes 3.5 hours as Natalia had advised at the beginning. The time flew!

Natalia asked us which was our favorite food. We unanimously agreed it was the chicharron but the best surprise was the Queso. Yes I loved it so much I returned a week later and ordered the same cocktail and appetizer. I have eaten plenty of chicharron but unexpected pleasant surprises are definitely memorable. I will be returning again for Miami Spice and brunch.

So what did I think of the Secret Food Tour?

Overall I loved it. So far the best food tour on the beach.

First our guide Natalia is definitely a foodie expert. Not only was she raised in Miami Beach, Natalia has worked mostly in progressive and organic restaurants both in Miami and New York City. Along the way she became certified in tropical organic farming and sustainable design and also works part-time as personal chef. Impressive!

During the tour Natalia touched on some other facts about the area. One guest did ask a lot more questions about the history. Natalia was a smart girl and knew most answers. As a history buff a bit older than her, I was able to fill in some blanks. But folks this is a food tour, so the guide may not be as versed on other topics. In this case, I recommend taking the Art Deco walking tour for a solid introduction to the fascinating history, development and transformation of Miami Beach. Take the 10am tour, maybe eat a very light lunch and then take the Secret Food tour at 5:30pm and you have a well rounded experience in South Beach if you are limited in time and only have a day or two.

The Price of the Food Tour

Yes it was a fair value ($69) given some of the high end restaurants. The cocktails were another $35. It's all about location. Plus it was a lot of food! I even took home a doggy bag. There was no mention of gratuity but it really is customary and so please do not forget to tip your tour guide adequately, a range of 18-20% is good.

The Weather

The weather. Normally it rains at 5pm during summer/ hurricane season. We were lucky a blue sky overlooked our tour. Regardless, always be prepared for a passing thunderstorm. So do wear shoes that can get wet and carry an umbrella or rain poncho. These tours continue rain or shine as most showers do not last more than 15-20 minutes.

The Location

The scenery is beautiful. South Pointe has lovely landscaping, more palm trees and fountains. Distinct higher end side of South Beach. Also multimillion dollar condos border the area, mostly vacation getaways for wealthy visitors. I loved going on a Tuesday evening although the area would no doubt have more energy on weekends. As I am always busy, on the run, I appreciated the serene evening.

Would I Take this Food Tour Again?

Yes. And I will definitely be recommending it to all my visiting guests. While the mojito was a disappointment that was forgotten with the culmination of the key lime pie for this Florida girl. For the best mojito in South Beach, be sure to try the Art Deco Cocktail Tour or Little Havana tour.

I do recommend taking this food tour. It was an excellent representation of Miami from progressive, traditional, cultural influence and Florida favorite dishes. And Natalia was indeed a perfect guide to lead it.

Las Vegas - From the Dark Side to the Light

My first vacation destination this year was to hotter, drier Las Vegas. While I enjoy hot weather (it was a scorching 110 degrees Fahrenheit, 43 degrees Celsius in July), and beaches and lounging poolside, I also am an avid aficionado of history and culture. Not so much a gambler. So with sky-reaching hotels replacing 1950's and 60's classics like the Sand, Dunes, the Sahara... was Vegas a Viva or Vaya vacation (Long live or Bust)? Interestingly, the growing number of glitzy, posh hotels tell a story. A new history. I love it. Apart from gambling, drinking and watching shows, the other must-do activity for Vegas visitors is hotel hopping. Immediately I picked up on a telltale sign since my last visit 20+ years ago. A change is occurring. Long overdue and still slow to evolve. Vegas has finally seen the light! (Blog post photos best viewed on large computer screen).

Las Vegas is still sizzling with bright digital outdoor lights, whirling slot machines, the ding-ding-ding of the small win, and even non-intoxicated guests like myself still need a map to find their way though the maze of the casino to get to the other side--the hotel guest rooms. But what has changed? The hotel design and decor to attract passerbys, ultra wealthy guests, and to seduce gamblers.

DID YOU KNOW?

If you have visited Vegas old and new then you are probably aware that older Vegas hotels/casinos all have interiors with no windows or natural light or even clocks. Except for guestrooms. A long-held belief is that casino design was meant to have low ceilings void of windows and clocks to help gamblers lose track of time and spend more money. "Really?" I thought to myself. The psychology did not add up to me. At least for this native Floridian, the more sunlight, the more motivation for me to do anything. My immediate thought was that given the history of Vegas, a town built in the middle of the desert as a railroad town and later to build a dam, the men who worked there needed a distraction and entertainment. Soon appeared show girls and later prostitutes and casinos. A Mormon funded town which graduated to a mob haven, (a natural progression of course--slight joke), I would say the buildings were designed to keep these vices clandestine and provide a reprieve from the blinding desert sun. After some research, turns out my theory was correct.

Is It True?

According to British psychologist, Mark Griffiths, after 15 psychological studies, he found no conclusive evidence of the effect on windows and wall clocks on gamblers to spend more time. However he did conclude that scent and lighting did affect mood and tendencies to stay longer and gamble more.

Theme Hotels in Vegas

While theme hotels were the trend for years (Circus Circus Hotel, Paris Hotel) the interior casino design remained the same. This visit I stayed at the elegant Venetian hotel which opened in 1999. A slice of Venice in many regards.

After crossing the bridge and Venetian canal immediately I noticed the change. I was entering a fusion of Venice meets Vegas. No windows or natural light and a casino maze to greet me. Here is where I needed a GPS to find the lobby to check in. However the design and attention to detail was stunning. The lobby boasted 25 foot wide columns made of solid Botticino marble imported from Italy. The Venetian Colonnade's marble floor was hand fitted and modeled after the floor of the Church of the Santa Maria del Rosario in Venice.

The Bellagio Breaks Tradition

The Bellagio Hotel broke the mold of casino design in 1998. At the time it was the most expensive hotel built in the world at a tune of $1.6 billion dollars.

The Bellagio hotel welcomed the natural light in a smart design with high dome glass ceilings to prevent glare. The casinos are still in the center of the hotel with no windows but the surrounding natural light was most inviting, contrary to old hotel design thinking. Vegas was designed for men--the dark macho man caves. The new design welcomed everyone.

Wynn and Encore hotels

It is no wonder that the person who brought back razzle dazzle to Vegas, creating the 54-foot-high-active volcano (at the Mirage) is Steve Wynn, the creator of the Bellagio who continued to go against the grain of casino gaming layout when building the Wynn hotel.

Instead of gaming equipment at the entrance, light, airy, and whimsical elegant decor greets you. A Chihuly glass sculpture or merry- go- round made of flowers and ivory statue horses. Instead of empty walls and no clocks in casino area, Wynn's designer used silk fabrics and antique clocks. The rationale was to induce a feeling of wealth and confidence. Would you prefer a dark room, a cave to hide, or a luxurious room with natural light. It seems the latter has paid off.

The wow factor is more than the $2.7 billion price tag of the Wynn hotel in 2005. Wynn incorporated outdoor elements, artwork, and maximized the destination for weddings and events.

Outside there is the 18-hole golf course. Inside lining the walls is artwork including the Le Reve the Picasso portrait which Wynn reportedly paid $42 million. The 15 restaurants, three wedding salons, the Ferrari-Maserati dealership and the casino next to the three-acre-man made lake with the 70 foot waterfall.

The Wynn and Encore hotels were built from the female perspective. With layer upon layer of detail. The opposite of the gaming design. My favorite was the Encore hotel which exudes femininity and elegance in every section of the hotel. The pool and the Jardin restaurant stole my heart.

The pool with a swim- up bar also features outdoor gaming tables. During my visit, a group of people played at one card game table behind the bar (the covered island pictured below on the left) and were cheering and applauding the entire two hours. In the middle of the afternoon surrounded by a pool, bright day light, and a well stocked bar steps away, guests gambled to their heart's content. Proof again that the "playground" design worked.

I felt I was in Miami. With sunny hot weather, "light and airy" is a design that is popular for both home, office and restaurant design.

Unfortunately time did not permit to visit all the hotels on the strip. I often wondered what happened to the classics like Sahara and Dunes. Were they empty or demolished and replaced? Turns out most were imploded and made way for the new darlings on the strip. So bombing and building is the name of the game. In the past I stayed at the Flamingo and visited Caesars Palace. Today it's the Encore. Below is an abbreviated timeline of select hotels and casinos to look up some of your favorites.

1946- The Pink Flamingo opens, built by notorious mobster Bugsy Seigel. It is the first luxury hotel on the Strip. (renamed Fabulous Flaming in 1947, the Flamingo Hilton in 1974, and Flamingo Las Vegas in 1999).

Where to Enjoy Jazz Music in Miami

The sultry sounds of saxophone, the dapper singer, the aromatic cigar- smoke filled room...Aaah the allure of jazz music.

While salsa, merengue, rumba, and reggaeton fill the clubs and spills out onto the streets, mixed in with blaring rap music and EDM from cars with windows rolled down, jazz music and scene are making a return since it's heyday in the 1930's when Count Basie, Lena Horne and Nat King Cole sizzled clubs on Miami Beach.

Many visitors have asked me lately about places to hear jazz music. So I created this list of establishments that offer regular jazz music select nights. From your humble locales to original 1930's hotels, there's something for everyone.

THE CORNER

For a casual setting and to enliven a humdrum start of the week, The Corner in north downtown is where locals continue drinking, mingling and enjoy nightlife music until 5am. On Tuesdays, enjoy live jazz with a full service bar and kitchen for hungry nightowls including hearty sandwiches, soups and salads. If The Corner is your second or third stop of the evening and you have to be at work next morning, this cocktail is for you-- "The Corpse Reviver No. 2" with Tanqueray Malaquay Gin, Cointreau, Lillet, Absinthe, and lemon. No cover charge.

LE CHAT NOIR

In Central downtown, this establishment is a hidden gem. Located just north of the Miami River a block away from the soon-to-be-closed Macy's department store, Le Chat Noir is a favorite of mine. First the narrow street level entrance with handsome dark wood paneling reminds me of a romantic, cozy, candle-lit French bistro. It gets better. Descending down a staircase to the basement (yes a rare basement in Miami!) one discovers an old cellar lined with wine bottles and small stage for musicians. Start the evening in the upstairs piano lounge enjoying drinks and bar bites particularly French-inspired wine and cheese until around 10pm when the jazz comes alive downstairs.( $10 cover charge) A little known secret: on the outside in front window is an original sign in black and yellow designating the establishment as a nuclear bomb shelter dating back to the 1960s. Basements and bomb shelters were a rarity in a city at water level.

THE BETSY HOTEL

Right on the beach, at 14th street and Ocean Drive, the Betsy Hotel boasts the longest running jazz series. Tuesday-Saturday nights from 6-11 pm, this colonial charming lobby and original pink and cream terrazzo flooring invites you to a free night of live jazz entertainment.

Special Event: The Betsy's Annual Overture to Overtown Jazz Festival 2018

Honoring the birthplace of jazz in Miami, for 19 nights February 25 to March 10, the festival features 17 performances by 30 performers. Artists will play wide ranging Jazz genres including Traditional, Ecletic, and Latin Jazz, Root Music and much more.

Overtown, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Miami is also home to jazz music in the Magic City. While the Depression cut across all economic strata it forced visit jazz bands, struggling local artists and drifters to collaborate outside of the glamorous South Beach where black artists could perform but not stay in the hotels. THE NATIONAL HOTEL

It doesn't get any better than this original Art Deco hotel. The elegant National Hotel immediately transports you to the 1930's with its tripartite exterior and Art Deco interior design and decor from the angular railings, nautical portholes, and streamline bar. A grand piano sits in front of the bar tucked around by seats and cocktail tables. Live jazz music is performed Wednesday to Sunday evenings from the Blues Bar beginning at 8:30pm (in high season now through May). For summer and fall performances, please visit their website for new schedule.

The National Hotel also hosts a weekly Sunday Brunch featuring live jazz music from 11am to 2pm ($50 per person).

Imagine a nondescript, industrial but quaint corner building, painted all in black. Like opening a small gift box, I step inside and scan the room. No sparkly jewelry here but close. A handsome chef with his black apron greets me and leads me to a seating area facing a deep red colored wall lined with shiny industrial cookware. Fast forward to the main event, a blind fold is then placed over my eyes. Next I'm asked to part my lips and taste...

Dining Table for Two

At first glance my immediate thoughts were the culinary version of 50 Shades of Grey but turned black and bright red. Is that rope art or props on the wall? This was no ordinary secret room. This was the Shushi House of Food Porn. And yes the first word is spelled correctly.

I was here for a culinary experience but one that could be tailored to my interests. Now before your minds race off to picture me as Anastasia of Miami, allow me to clarify it's not that kind of establishment. It's all about the food.

WHAT IS SHUSHI?
Shushi is the modern evolution of the traditional sushi but filled with the world's cooked foods and wrapped in soy paper with ingredients such as tropical fruit (avocados, plantains) and specialty sauces.

Local Cuban American chef Franco Antonio Blanco is the creator and owner. Chef Blanco shares that he fell in love with sushi rolling but his Cuban American mother did not like raw fish. So he combined his two passions, sushi rolls with his favorite mother's recipe that includes Cuban pork, black beans and plantains. With her Spanish accent, the pronunciation sounded like "shooshee". Hence the name ShuShi was born.

That was just the beginning. Chef Blanco was on a roll. He then took the concept a step further by creating Shushi rolls with ingredients from other countries and cultures around the world. A house full of guests not only loved the flavors but the presentation was equally alluring giving rise to the "House of Food Porn".

So what about the blindfold?
Well, there are two ways to enjoy Shushi. According to Chef Blanco, he can prepare and present tastings from around the world for your immediate consumption or to alter the experience, another way is not to see the Shushi ingredients but to taste it and feel it. Without sight, your other senses are heightened. "Close your eyes first, savor the flavors. Where does it take you? How does it make you feel?" he shares in that sexy-made-for-movie-scene voice.

So for my first tasting I submitted to the blindfold. Creamy, garlic, tangy and spicy...sumptuous! How did it make me feel? Euphoric! Where does it take me? Read on...

The Caribbean Roll pictured above was one of my favorites --black beans, corn tamale, avocado, peppers and spicy sriracha sauce. Oh that sauce!

Chef Blanco serves ShuShi rolls

The Polish Cuban below features both Polish kielbasa and Cuban black beans. Coincidentally I am half Polish and half Hispanic and loved the combination of flavors. I wonder if the Chef knew this about me. Had he Googled me and learned about my background? If so, brilliant of him to do his homework on his customer to elevate the experience. The presentation was eye-catching.

After three tasty and tantalizing rolls, the fourth one was even more visually stimulating.
Chef Blanco continued the journey and took us to the heart of America with this sesame roll.

Presenting the Americano roll with flaked, angus meatloaf, ketchup and barbecue sauce for main ingredients. Of course the eyes were immediately drawn to the distinct topping. Someone voiced "Wardrobe Malfunction". Very clever. Oh the fun was never ending.

Located off-the-culinary-beaten-path in Little Haiti, Chef Blanco found his cooking zen here. Why Little Haiti? "It's the next up and coming neighborhood." Indeed.

Most intriguing is that the House of Food Porn is not a restaurant concept open to the public. Rather it's an exclusive culinary experience. Chef Blanco offers catering to local businesses (doctor's offices, financial institutions) and brings the shushi to you. However the ultimate experience is the private tastings at his location. The idea behind the ShuShi Tasting Room is sitting in the living room of a chef and to view and taste a culinary experience. With advance reservations private tastings of your choice of shushi rolls can be arranged for any occasion from a romantic date for two, a business lunch or just a fun-themed dinner event for group of friends.

So how good was it? "So good, it's naughty" is the slogan and I would agree.

As you can tell I had fun discovering and tasting. It was memorable. That's the idea. And pairing it with the right drink also enhances the event. My recommendation is to tell the chef your preferred flavors and ingredients, whether you like spicy heat, and let him surprise you. Deciphering the flavors is half the pleasure. May I suggest bringing a prop-- blindfold-- for added fun (wink).

Habitat Restaurant Launch at 1 Hotel South Beach

One of the most chic and popular hotels with locals and out-of-town guests in South Beach and one of my favorites) has launched a new restaurant, Habitat, to replace the 170- seat room that formerly housed Beachcraft.

Regular guests and visitors to this hotel are familiar with the hotel's eco-conscious ethos. In keeping with this tradition to support local farmers while innovating new dishes from traditional recipes, Habitat applies modern techniques to create a new flavor profile that draws from Spanish, Latin and Asian traditions.

WHO IS THE CHEF?
Owners tapped Michelin-starred Spanish chef Angel Palacios to helm the culinary team with the title "Chef de Cuisine". Habitat’s menu will embrace all of the excitement and innovation that has fueled Spain’s culinary ascendancy while at the same time taking into account what it means to be a Miami Beach mainstay.

The launch sneak preview was sponsored by Ocean Drive magazine on November 9 on the second level or loft area of the restaurant.

You may recognize Camila Alves McConaughey (wife of actor Matthew McConaughey) on the cover who also attended the event that evening.

Appetizer sampling for the event included mini spring raw salads, to the center case of fresh oysters glistened atop bed of crush ice, and the fine shaving of Iberica ham slices with slices of toasted garlic bread.

THE INSPIRATION
“Miami is the crossroads,” shares Juan Ayora, CEO and President. “For Habitat, we want to create something that embraces the region’s internationalism but is very much of this place and time. Flavors, hospitality, service and comfort will be the foundation of it all.”

NEW MEANING OF "HEALTH FOOD"
Habitat delivers a new meaning to the concept of “health food.” An open fire and wood-baked cookery will be the cornerstone of all hot dishes with an abundant raw selection encompassing everything from ceviches, tartares, tiraditos and shellfish from across the globe as well as vegetables and salads. The extensive raw menu is designed to complement the grilled items.

Along those lines a special feature of the restaurant is a "salad sommelier". In true old-fashion style, a wooden cart filled with fresh greens makes the rounds so guests may create a custom salad tableside.

I am particularly enamored with Habitat’s design which reflects both the parent restaurant brand and 1 Hotel's commitment to sustainability with all-natural materials and craftmanship. The feeling is both comfortable and unpretentious, soft blues and browns evoke the sea with hand dyed textiles, natural woods, stone and warm lighting. In the image below, real grass grows from the framed art on the wall.

I'm looking forward to exploring this new genre-defying concept in South Beach. With recent visits to the Costa del Sol (south coast of Spain) and Paris where oysters and mussels are king, expectations are set high.

Christine Michaels sports her newest swimwear in celebration of Swim Miami

Milan and New York City may be synonymous with fashion but no city capitalizes wet, wild, sensual swim fashion as Miami.

Miami Swim Fashion Week is here and it's Christmas in July. Swim Miami is the most prestigious collection of runway shows running parallel with the swimwear industry's largest tradeshow.

Hotels in South Beach and downtown Miami and other venues will host runway shows and cocktails for familiar brands like Luli Fama to Indah to Revel Rey. Trendy restaurants are joining the feverish event such as Kiki's on the Miami River in downtown Miami.
