Surgery or filler? The iPhone app from plastic surgeon Michael Salzhauer reveals how to get a new profile

Some people have made of their “outsized” profile their distinctive feature, like Barbra Streisand.

Other, instead, couldn’t stand the slightest flaw, like chica Jennifer Lopez, who chose nose surgery to have the tip of her nose thinned.

It is not always necessary, however, to make such radical decisions.

Some flaws may be corrected with non-invasive techniques, like the use of hyaluronic acid.

"A filler may be used to correct an irregular tip, which has a key-role in the structure of the nose», says Doctor Dvora Ancona, who teaches at the Masters in Aesthetic medicine at the University of Pavia.

"In particular, the tips which feature grooves in their outline (the so-called bifid tips) or those that with time tend to bend downwards, spoiling the harmony of the face. With a filler you may even correct small bumps, also on the back of the nose, creating new volumes that minimize defects".

The correction employing fillers is painless, does not require anesthesia, and does not cause swelling.

The gel is injected in small quantities into the areas to be treated and the result is immediate. The treatment is not conclusive, though: with time the hyaluronic acid will be re-absorbed, and after a few months the patient will have to repeat the treatment.

To "sculpt" the tip once and for all, one may recur to surgery using a local anesthetic. The intervention concerns the side cartilages, the external ones above the nostrils, and, through two small cuts, slight portions of the cartilage are removed. Following a recovery of about ten days, results will be final after two or three months.

Hand-kissing is not just old-fashioned – it is also dangerous, at least for anyone who wants to hide their real age.

The reason is simple: “The skin of the hands, which is constantly in use and is exposed to ultraviolet radiation, ages five times faster than the skin on the rest of the body,” according to Professor Antonino Di Pietro, a dermatologist and the president of ISPLAD, an international Italian Plastic-Cosmetic Dermatology and Oncology organisation.

This is why it is essential to have a daily beauty routine involving three steps: protection, hydration and massage. According to Di Pietro, “massage reactivates the circulation, ensures that the skin is nourished and oxygenated, and also creates a sense of general wellbeing.”

How should you do it?

“Start with the little finger on your right hand, gently pulling and massaging it. Do the same with the other fingers, and then move on the left hand. Then use to fingertips to massage the backs of your hands as far down as the wrist. With the thumb and index finger of the right hand apply pressure along the fingers of the left – and vice versa. Massage the thumbs by smoothing the skin and pulling on them lightly.”

To remove the signs of ageing – dark marks on the back of the hands and a generally wrinkled appearance – you need cosmetic medicine.

Marcello Ruspi, specialist in vascular surgery and chirurgia vascolare and Medical Director of the Poliambulatorio San Pietro in Milan explains: “To get rid of the marks completely, the use of a pulsed light laser is recommended – this eliminates the excess melanin.”

What do you do if you want hands like a girl? “The skin plumping treatment that restores youthfulness and fullness to the hands is called Injector Hydro Balance, says Magda Belmontesi, a dermatologist, cosmetic doctor and scientific director of theMediSpa Duomo in Milan. It injects stabilised hyaluronic acid into the backs of the hands with a device that allows you to introduce the same micro-droplet of hyaluronic acid up to 200 times through a very fine needle. This takes place over three sittings, which are alternated with skin peel treatments using trichloracetic and lactic acids, stimulating epidermal turnover and providing an immediate smoothing effect.”

A contemporary romanticism suggests new mysteries and new stories of theatrical melancholia suggested by décor. The taste for the eccentric is cultivated, captivating settings are dressed up, intimate and precious, angelic or vaguely demoniac.

Lace, tulle, graphic transparency appear enwrapped in the crepuscular black mantle, a cape that seems hailing from other centuries, the one designed by Antonio Berardi, revisited through the texture of nights to come. Never-seen-before volumes, fatally ergonomic, in the dresses by Belle Sauvage, artfully destroyed those by Julien MacDonald, a 19th Century snipped and burnt, fairytale-like and neo-Gothic, illuminated by a stormy moon.

Halfway between the echoes of the armor and 20s aesthetics the ancestral long dress by Craig Lawrence, billowing like in Elizabethan times for Corrie Nielson, although that beige satin, almost geometrically padded, evoke a modern and icy Marie Antoinette, whose pomp looks cooled down by the passing of time.

From the archives. The references to the neo-Gothic and the aesthetics of the end of the 18th century, the splendor of Goya and the renowned X of the uniforms, re-proposed at different stages by the pop & rock world. And even mythological references, like in the hat inspired by Isis, the goddess of ancient Egypt.

In the past. Without having to resort to the usual, and in any case matchless, Marquise Casati, it would be enough to evoke the jewelry excess and the impudent cleavage flaunted by the Countess of Castiglione, or the long tunics worn by Sarah Bernhardt, whose golden sequins moved with her, in her signature wave: her carefree clothing style had immediately spread, like a fascinating train, alongside with the sumptuous belts and Byzantine jewelry. Finally Cristina di Belgioioso’s pale complexion, a ghost featuring raven black hair hanging around the salons of the beginning of the 19th century, wearing only white or black, subdividing men into three categories: “He loves me, he has loved me, he will love me”.

Bracelets, rings and earrings featuring geometric shapes, and lines that enhance the body thanks to the beautiful leather inserts and crystal embellishments.

The boutique, the collaborations and the new projects testify that Kirkwood is becoming an increasingly coveted designer, a young creative talent climbing to the peak of success.

Brazilian, born in 1980, this fascinating “garota de Ipanema” completed her studies in New York, where one of the best-known contemporary Brazilian artists, Vik Muniz, presented her thesis at the School of Visual Arts.

"Photography was the first tool I used," says Dias Leite. Dias Leite’s work is rooted "in the awareness that I am an extremely egocentric person", as she herself admits candidly. Awareness of this has allowed her not only to analyse her own character and explore the roots of her identity but to observe how others behave.

An ordinary entrance hall: a grey-green elevator, neon lights, a black stairway, faded walls.

It is October 7 2006, Anna Politkovskaja, 48 years old, journalist of the Novaya Gazeta, is coming home with her shopping; a man follows her, slips into the elevator behind her, the door closes… It is from here, from Ulitsa Lesnaja, end of the line/epigraph of the freedom of information, that the photographic journey of Donata Pizzi begins to places where history, in a fragment of everyday life, has cancelled the life of people like us.

So as not to forget, the images of Donata Pizzi, with the support of the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation, become an exhibition at the Triennale in Milan: Intolerance zero.

The various facets of everyday life, the extraordinariness of normality, captured by a liberal form of art: street photography

Out and about equipped with a camera, observing surrounding life and stopping time with a click. What is captured in that instant is not necessarily attractive, nor lyrical, nor idealized. Anything but. Often it is familiarity, non-beauty, the anonymous and the insignificant that are impressed on the film.

A gesture, a gaze, a situation, a particular angle that as hurried passers-by we would not have noticed, but which photography crystallizes, consequently making us open our eyes, revealing to us small fragments of everyday life. Street photography is a genre that originated together with the medium itself, emerging as a form of art after the second world war with artists of the caliber of Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand, Joel Meyerowitz, William Klein, Lee Friedlander, Diane Arbus, to name but a few.

All with very different approaches, styles and sensitivity, yet sharing the desire to discover life in the street, exploring its themes and subjects.

And not only: their way of portraying celebrities – actors, singers, artists, politicians – prove how it is still possible to astonish and innovate with a genre, that of portrait, precisely, as old as the photographic medium itself.

Hotel Il Pellicano is coming out in Italy published by Rizzoli: two hundred images dedicated to the as famous as it is exclusive hotel in Porto Ercole. In the volume the history of the renowned haunt for various generations of the international jet set is told through the vintage photographes by John Swope and Slim Aarons, and a series of portraits taken by Teller during a glamorous party in June 2009.

Meanwhile, at the Fotografiska museum in Stockholm recently opened and remaining open until June 12, is a large retrospective of Albert Watson's oeuvre: a true homage to his career.
